Root/unlock bootloader without losing data - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there
I'm stuck with this o2 UK M8 4.4.2 for a while, with none of my old backed up apps or data on it (need root for that). I need to unlock the bootloader and then root to restore... Easy enough. But I cannot afford a full wipe at present. All the data, settings and apps are too crucial
Is there any way to unlock the bootloader (root) without losing my data?
Or any workaround?
Thanks in advance!

Try to backup with the app called helium. Then unlock and root, restore backup if there are things missing.

From my knowledge, I don't think it's possible. An unlock requires a factory reset.

I think its not possible to unlock the phone without deleting data partition (for security reasons). How ever you can still backup all your apps+data with apps like Go Backup Pro(its free from market), but not sure if it will require rooting.
Other option: backup your data with adb pull/push commands
if you run out of options: try flashing unlocktoken from RUU mode(it avoids the warning screen, but I think it will still delete the data)
Well that is a shame.
I really wanted to make this as easy as possible.
You can try the app called carbon. Its free and does not require root. After the backup unlock the bootloader and restore the backup. Then you are able to flash different kernels.

[Q] HTC One V - how to backup??

Hi guys, I am a little noobish and could use some help. I want to backup my phone before I root it. But there is a problem - when I want to make a complete backup, it requires root. When I want to root, I have to unlock bootloader and this will wipe my data. So that means - I have to wipe my data to make a backup??? (so there is no way to backup my actual data? or root my phone without loosing them?)

[Q] Is there a root method that does not wipe the GNEX?

I'm looking to finally root my verizon gnex since it's getting very slow.
I was hoping to root, create a complete backup and install a rom.
So is there a root tool or method that won't wipe the current data?

The search box is there for a reason. Use it.
Rooting will involve unlocking the boot loader. Unlocking the boot loader always wipes all current data.
Rooting unlocks the bootloader which wipes data. There are methods through which you can root without data wipe. But unfortunately none works for galaxy nexus

How do you back up your phone?

My phone has been having some weird problems after rooting (not at first). I want to go back to stock and try rooting again. My question is since I can't install a custom recovery is there anyway I can back my app data? If I back my phone up with Titanium backup will I be able to restore it when I root again?

If you root again yes you can use Titanium backup.
But try using LG Backup. It backs up settings, homescreen/lockscreen icons, apps. It's pretty good and it even backs up the Data of your apps, not just the apk itself =).
You can choose SD card, internal storage or LG cloud as storage location! It's great for non-rooted phones.
