[Q] Dropped in water, Wont charge anymore

My friend dropped her phone into a glass of water. Stupid her just had it off over night with battery removed, but next day decided to just pop battery in and start using it. Calls me later(spare phone) and tells me details.
I go get it disassemble, rubbing alcohol, the works. Let dry for 48 hours. Everything on the phone works other than it wont charge the battery. She has 2 batteries one which is new. Besides getting an external charger for it, is there anything else I could do to fix it? Is there a part I can replace, or something software related that might fix it?

I suspect (hope) only the battery was damaged from your friend's phone. Have her go to TMO and see if they will let her test charge a display Slide battery in her phone. If it starts charging and increases by a few percentage points then perhaps only the battery was damaged. Hope the situation gets worked out.
Just dropped mine in a full sink two weeks ago ... mine hit the edge and knocked the battery out milliseconds before the device hit the water (miracle). Fully submerged. Dried it over a weak heater vent for 2 days. Works just like new. I figured the phone was ok as I snatched it out of the water very quickly. My main concern was the battery ... I thought I might have damaged it. So far everything is just fine.

We have tested it with a new battery. Phone works perfectly fine just wont charge the battery, every feature works. Can even connect to computer with usb.
What im trying to figure out is if there is something I can do i.e. fix it somehow cheaply

Your best bet is probably just using an external charger. I'm using a friends old phone that had a full glass of lemonade spill on it and sit for 5 hours in liquid, turned on. When he woke up the battery was sparking, contact was melted. The battery was partially fried from the short circuit, so I just bought a new battery. The only thing that doesn't work in the phone is the camera. The real downside to that is if any app tries to access the camera the phone completely locks up, takes about 10 seconds just to get out of the black screen.
I'm digressing, anyway, yeah, external charger is probably the best bet, if she has two batteries that should work just fine. Use one while the other is charging.

ultrasonic cleaning
if you disassemble to the charging circuit board or motherboard and try placing it into an alcohol solution in a u/s cleaner (also used for jewelry), this might clean the contacts and allow charging, might not do anything or damage the board. no guarantees on this method , but will sometimes work.
ps. remember that some circuit board cleaner solutions will dissolve plastic, recommend alcohol.

The best solution I have found for a wet phone, or any device for that matter, is to take the device apart as much as possible. Then put it in a ziploc bag of rice. Seal it up good so air doesn't get in. The rice will suck all the water out. I have done this with my old G1 (twice) as well as other phones.

Hi there.
My Mother has a One V which she is really happy about. But recently she says that it has been draining the battery so fast. At first i didnt really believe it (you know old people and tech), and asked if she had charged it correctly. She then told me that the charging process was also quite strange.. She had plugged it in one night, and the phone displayed that it was charging.. Then 8 hours after, in the morning it had only charged 2% ! This doesnt happen all the time, but only some times.
Now she has given it to me and hope that i can fix it. At first im just going to factory reset it, even though i dont think that is the problem. But i have noticed that what she is telling me is true to some extend. I have had the phone sitting on the table all night. No simcard and no nothing.. It had only used about 5%, but as soon as i began using it, to take backup and prepare for the reset oh boy.. It uses 1% in merely seconds! Approx 26 seconds per 1%!
I think this is rather strange and im unsure if the battery is the problem.. Do you guys have any ideas ?

Oh and i have to say that the phone is running newest stock software. It has never been rooted or anything like that.

Well, the charger port is probably bad. My first htc one m8 and my droid incredible 2 both have weak ports on them from the factory. Send it in for warranty and say nothing < about a possible bad charging port if it still has warranty. And, if nothing Less try a brand new charger, and see if that one works and if it's loose when it's plugged in. If it Is loose with new charger it's a bad charger port.

The first time this happened my One V dropped from 100% to 27% in 20 minutes! And just like it randomly happens it randomly goes; battery consumption goes back to normal after a day or two.
A possible reason is the charger and USB cable that is used. My cable is worn out so that might be why charging is slow but it doesn't explain why the battery drains so fast even when the phone is disconnected from the charger. So the only reasonable explanation would be some hardware problems in the battery pack.
But this is all just me guessing... I don't know for sure.

It could be the charger port. I tried cleansing it with a toothpick (heard dust could be the problem), but the problem persists

The problem here is that it happens every second time or so the phone is charged at the moment. But i have bought a new battery and will try and change it. Ill write here how it goes and if there is a improvement, so that you know where the problem relies if you are thinking about doing the same.

Same problem here. Every few months the battery drops from > 50% to 2% or so. This happens within some minutes and my phone gets really hot.
But normaly I use it with a 2 amp charger and I think this happens more often if I use chargers with 1 amp.
Edit: This happened for me with every rom I used.

I changed the battery two days ago, and i can already feel a huge improvement.. 8 hours ago i took it out from the charger. Data and Bluetooth has been on all day. Been browsing a little, and sent som SMS and stuff like that.. 65% now.
The conclusion must be that in my case at least, it was a battery hardware fault.

I'm also thinking about replacing my battery, was replacing it easy?

Yes it was actually pretty easy. Although i have done it on my One S too, and that was even easier.
Some recommendations: Get your self a repair tool kit before you start. Everything has been so much easier for me after i got that. It is all the money worth it . First i took the plate off at the bottom of the phone (the one where there behind is sim card and sd card). Unscrewed all six screws. Once done you can take all the plastic off the large plastic part (the one below the simcard and sd card when inserted, and covering everything behind the outer cover). This part is also taped/glued, but should not be a problem to get off.
After you have taken that off, use a pry tool to pry the plate open around the camera lens and flash (beware that this plate is also taped together. Unscrew the last screw behind.
Now comes the tricky part. You need another more solid pry tool to pry the lcd/board out from the front. Use the pry tool in between the screen and the cover of the phone, and all the way around. The LCD and board needs to come out from the phones front.
After that the battery becomes visible. There is nothing special to getting the plug out for it as far as i can remember and should just be pulled towards the battery to get it out. Battery is glue to the inside of the phone, but using the solid pry tool you should be able to get it out. If you order the battery i linked to, it comes with new 3M tape.

My One V is retired but since the battery is cheap I will buy one and replace it just in case I ever need the phone as backup.

Battery level stuck on 50%

hi everyone,
i having an issue with my battery level and it really pisses me off.
the battery level stuck at 50% - charging or not, it means you will never know if the phone is full charge(on charging) or nearly lowbat(discharging).
Also, it says "battery usage data isnt available.
it stays 50% when in recovery mode too.
i did the ff troubleshooting:
- wipe data, cache, system, etc.
- installed AOSP and CM ROM
- tried downloading battery test and everything is normal -
NOTHING CHANGED
The the battery stays upto 10+ hours but its hard to live without the battery level
hope you guys could help me with this - THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

Same here, and did the same, but unlocked boot loader, install ROM and tried to reflash firmware.
But batter stays at 50%...

hi guys i found a fix here..
i did everything i mentioned above but none of those work so i thought it was a hardware issue and i was right.
this is what i did..
I removed the cover of the battery or battery plate (probably I had to unscrew everything) at the middle of the unit there were 3 flex connectors, and all i did was removed those 3 and carefully cleaned it. i used dry toothbrush then put the flexes back. and turned on the unit- and it workS!!!! then put everything back -
never had issue again with the battery
I am not responsible for anything if you follow what i did. there are some videos on youtube how to remove the battery plate that holds the battery..

Are you sure about this???, i did and nothings changed..

I had the same problem and i took it to a service centre,,, they told me it was the problem of the motherboard....They changed the motherboard and now its working fine

i lived with this for a month till i found an accidental fix for this. i plugged in earphones (first time) to listen to a meditation app that i'd just downloaded, and when i unplugged the earphones and charged the phone, the charging display went back to normal.

This usually happens when there is a loose connection between the motherboard and the battery. It happens on other androids too.

I am facing the same issue.. battery bar stuck at 50%.. Sometime hitting at back restores the function.. but again goes back to same within a day or two.. very irritating..

The problem is not the software. the way you fix it is take off the back plate, remove all the tiny Philips screws and remove the hold down backing plate, and take a piece of paper and fold it 2 or 3 times and place it on the black foam piece that the battery connector is on the top of the battery, that's the battery connector connecting the battery to the phone electronic board. the problem is the connection is loose. what you are doing is creating a shim to push the connector in more. you could use electrical tape but paper works ok and you can control how much pressure to apply. do not use too thick of a piece for the shim or you would bulge out the hold down backing plate.

This actually fixed it, I got the battery of my phone replaced from the service center for another issue and got this problem after they replaced it. Wondering why they don't know about this problem they could have prevented it before it's released. First time I had to do this on my own as I'm frkn tired of going back to them. Thanks @eksine :victory: glad you visit XDA from time to time.

I must say : Asus Zenfone 2 is a peace of sh.. or maybe garbage.
I have problems with this phone from the day one.
Whatsapp,
battery (died after 4 months),
bad signal for internet (my other phones works much better),
software,
now the new battery is stuck on 50%
I promise that I will never again buy any product from Asus in my life, because this phone has destroyed my nerves.

I change a battery by myself and after that I stuck at the 50% too. After I read your post, I reopen the cover and found that the battery connector is really loosen and I apply your shim method to make it more better connection and it can read the actual battery percentage.

Tab heating up and battery drain

Hi Friends,
I took over a tab 8.0 Lte from my dad but there seems to be a big problem with it. The tab keeps heating up even in idle and battery drain is fast and constant. From full to 0, the graph is a constant downslope going flat in about 3hrs. This happens even after I hard resetted it. I open up the back and found the part that is heating up. I am starting to think that the motherboard is damaged rather than the battery need a change. The metal part is HOT. I cant touch it for more than 2 sec. Even in idle.
I attached the part in the pic, hopefully someone can help me to identify the problem. Thanks lots in advance!!

It seems you open the rear cover the wrong way as it still have the frame cover around the back. It should open from the front.
You don't tell exactly model , I'm not sure what it is but most of this problem is from cracked battery connector. Re solder the black battery connector will fix it.
This is the proper way to open the rear, do like you did will damage the rear cover, it won't snap back as some plastic locking tabs are broken.

Ya I opened from the back.. Yes.. Realised some of the locking tabs are broken. :/ took the instructions from ifixit.. The connector looks, feel perfectly fine though..

Trust me it looks fine with bare eyes but not under microscope. Re solder the battery connector will fix the quick discharge, overheating. It takes only under 5 minutes to get it done, this problem is common in Samsung tablets.

Okie.... I give it a try. My last soldering experience was like 15yrs ago....

I just opened up the tab again and have a look at the connector.. It's so freaking tiny! How on earth is someone able to do it?..? I think if I were to do it, I would solder at least 3 pins together in one shot.......

You need magnified glass and small tip iron to do the rework,
Otherwise you will short it

A50 "battery is overheating, charging stopped" issue

Hello folks,
My phone is A505F/DS
It got very little water / chlorhexidine? (COVID-19 fact ) inside the charging port.
After that it just shutdown by itself. I tried to charge . It got "overheated" sign and it won't even start.
So, dug abit over youtube and decided to wash off the type c port with IPA(isopropyl alcohol) , but it is literally impossible to find it now-a-days (again COVID-19 fact) . Also i am in complete lockdown on my side of the country.
So, having no other options in my hand, i brushed the port with plain water and my toothbrush !!!!lol!!!!!!!! and to my utter surprise, it started and working 95% ok. But, now i am having one issue. Randomly, when i charge or do nothing but surf internet or YouTube , it can rarely notify " device overheating.. bla ... bla..bla" .
So i installed couple of temp monitoring apps and observed, this phone has only one temperature sensor? Called "battery temp ". Whenever it reaches 50°c it stops battery charging (obviously lipo safe operating temp range's upper limit is around 50°c). And when it goes around 59°c level it stops all phone functions apart from emergency call .
Now, what i need help about, is it possible to change the threshold level of cutting of the charging of the battery to 53°c around? Coz i have seen that even if the device is like of room temperature the "battery temp" hangs around 50-52°c and suddenly goes back to normal.
Plz help. In this lockdown, this little digital entertainment device is what i am passing my most time with And trying to get a living in this tough times.

Turn off fast charging if you updated to Android 10 (it's new feature in OneUI 2.0), also try to not use phone when it's charging.

You cant fix this peoblem just by ignoring the high temperatures, its obviously a hardware issue and you made it worse by using water to clean the charging port. Water is very corrosive to electronics and may create shorts. You phone probably need to be desassembled and properly cleaned with isopropyl alcohol. Some components may need to be replaced(i hope no). Its imo dangerous to continu using it as it is

as i am in lockdown i cant get my hands on IPA.
I cant even open the phone. Any tutorial to open it by simple tools?

[Update] today i was just surfing the internet, and the temperature suddenly shoot up to 62°c but the device on hand was cool enough to consider the temperature reading false . And suddenly it went back to 44. Again up to 55.... etc etc. I kept the phone @ Refrigerator for a min . And for last 8 hrs its fine... weird lol

Most probably your temperature sensor is giving wrong details to OS.

Yeah . Right?
Again today it randomly shot upto 63°c. Like from 45°c . It was jumping around like crazy for about 15 minutes.... now again normal.
I don't know what to do

Quick update.
Almost a month no problem faced
What i did..
1. Turned off fast charging (i think this is the most important thing to do)
2. Not using the phone while charging
3. Keep the phone @floor while charging( keeps it cool i guess?)

I kept it away for 2 days wrapped i tissue paper untouched and it seemed to be back to normal.(so far its been 3 2 days since the problem stopped happening)

My phone like your phone break and say over hearting error
Just gooing to your guaranty service this error for hardware problem

Any update on your phone temperature? Is it going back to normal?

I just had this same exact problem with my a50. I asked Google before I bought it if the A50 was water resistant and found 4 sites that said yes. Turns out it isn't and I cleaned the phone after shopping in lockdown and it started malfunctioning. I just successfully fixed it last night by watching a YouTube video that shows disassembly and then removing very small units from the charging port sub board. You only need a 00 Phillips screwdriver, a piece of plastic water bottle and tweezers or xacto blade. It shows how to remove the malfunctioning thermistor

Replace the charging PCB to fix the issue
In most cases, you need to replace the charging board to fix the issue. There is no other way to get rid of that problem:

This is what I did to fix mine. Removed those 3 components that @Gspain2020 was talking about. I used a soldering iron and a needle, but tweezers or an exacto knife will probably be better. Or you could get a new charging daughterboard which should also fix the problem.
If you remove those components, the phone will be unable to detect the temperature, which can be dangerous if you allow it to overheat. Instead of the phone managing the temperature, you must stop using it if it gets too hot.
