I have an HTC One m8 which may be currently bricked. I'm really hoping someone can help me get this phone functional again.
I purchased the device unlocked from ebay with Sense UI. I wanted to use Google Play Edition, so I began the process of rooting, obtaining S-Off, and flash the GPE RUU. With the RUU, my sim card was no longer recognized. Not being able to return to stock (because there was not an RUU available), I opted to install the Viper One ROM which solved my sim card issue and the phone was fully functional (it just had sense ui on it, which I don't really care for).
Recently I decided to give GPE another go, and tried lots of things, one of which (stupid, I know) was S-On. Now I seem to be stuck with S-On and the device won't recognize my sim card. I am quite confident this sim card issue is not related to a phyiscal problem with the sim card, as I've had this issue before with other ROMs, and switching to Viper One always resolved it. Additionally, I have other devices and other sim cards at my disposal. I can still get to recovery, and Cyanogenmod nightlies. However I can't get back to S-Off. firewater now tells me "device patched by HTC, you are out of luck" and Sunshine tells me "Sunshine cannot be used on your current rom/Kernel combination. If you are running custom software, you will need to flash a stock sense-based rom, and try sunshine again".
I've tried installing many other roms but they are giving install errors (Viper One, Android Revolution, InsertCoin). I have tried installing these from TWRP, CWM, and Philz Touch. I've tried formatting partitions before installing them, and mounting or unmounting partitions.
Any help to get this device functional again would be appreciated.
Here is a recent log from trying to install ViperOne.

If you can get to recovery you are not bricked. You seem to have many problems and I can't help you. Just be patient and someone more experienced will.

wow.. ok.. I'm sure you have already heard it but I'm going to say it again, once you go soff, never turn it back on! Now that we have gotten that out of the way… You have actually converted to gpe and turned security back on so you are stuck on gpe. You cannot flash full sense roms. Here is what I would try. You have 2 options here and one of them is sure to get you soff again but you may have to use sunshine this time around.
First, flash twrp again and clear cache "newest twrp"
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
fastboot erase cache
1. Flash sinless rom, and immediately flash stock gpe kernel. Reboot phone and try to use firewater then sunshine. Remember to flash stock kernel! You will see his flashable stock kernel in the op.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2709397
2. If that didn't work, flash sinless sense designed for gpe. It has an insecure stock kernel so firewater or sunshine may work also. If it doesn't, you will need bone stock sense flashable kernel.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2722578
Let me know the outcome, if one or the other doesn't work we have more options, but we need soff to get rid of your goole cid and get you back to sense.
Thanks so much, an0ther. Your first method allowed Sunshine to do it's thing, and I now have S-Off again!
So where to now? Ideally I would like to have GPE with a working sim. However the sim is still not recognized with Sinless rom, or the GPE RUU that I have. I also tried installing Viper One again, but I'm still getting the install errrors. As I said before, Viper One has been the only thing that gave me a working sim in the past. I was surprised that I'm still getting the install errors, I was expecting s-off to fix that.

What carrier are you with? You need a flashable radio to get gpe working with your carrier. Viper just happens to have your carrier in it. I would get back to sense, then you can just flash gpe roms and experiment with it. You can't flash viper yet because you are still on gpe partition and it is not big enough for sense roms. Here is the guide to get back to sense. Follow every step of the guide! Don't forget the changing of cid. After going back to sense, you can flash viper again. I would get back, then ask mrjaydee82 in the sinless forums about your radio. He is one of the nicest developers out there and really goes out of his way to help people. By far he has the best gpe rom imo. Glad we got your soff again. Let me know if you have any questions. Remember, no advantage to converting to gpe, just flash roms. Btw, converting back to sense wipes your phone, so backup anything if needed.

That makes a lot of sense about the partition sizes. I will go through this guide. And I'm on Straight Talk, which uses the AT&T network.

Let me know when you are back on viper with working sim. I can help you with radio/gpe if you can't get it figured out.

I'm there! Viper with working sim You're a hero, an0ther! I had to select AT&T in the viper install. I tried selecting Default, but that didn't work for me. Any suggestions from here, as far as getting to the GPE with a working radio?

Backup viper. Flash sinless now. It may work now that you are on different radio. If not, go into apn settings and set them for at&t.
That worked great. I had to choose a different Sinless rom than previously. The ART one got stuck on an endless loading animation for me. But the one labeled "TN Settings in ROM" worked, and my radio still works.
Is it possible for me to get from here to a stock GPE? If not, I can live with the custom rom. Thanks again, you have been a huge help.

After running the 10.10.12 version of CM10, I put it to sleep and it had the black screen of death and it couldn't boot up and was stuck at the LG logo screen. I just started CWM Recovery and flashed the ROM again which erased the tweaks.
As for right now, I'm only using the Lightning Zap v1 tweak on my 10.10.12 CM10 Nightly and its so smooth and even think it's saving me quite a bit of battery.
TL;DR: If you're going to test out PIMP MY ROM, be warned that some tweaks may cause your phone to be stuck on boot loop.
Also got stuck on LG logo on boot. But one question. How many tweaks did u apply at once? It does say not to apply all at once. Maybe the number of tweaks applied at one time is the issue? I have the lightning zap as well as the v6 supercharger and my phone is the fastest I've ever had it. Running paranoidandroid 2.5x by utacka.

Hi, similar to couple of threads, but - I believe - specific enough to start a new dedicated one. I have endeavoru HOX, cid HTC__032. Some time ago I damaged partition layout. It was complete ignorant era - I was doing things I should have read about before I bought used HOX with stock 3.14.401.31 (OTA update applied in the meantime as far as I rmember), I was experiencing some problems with it so unlocked, pushed CWM recovery and installed CM 10.1.3. Unfortunately, gapps kept crashing so I decided to do some cleaning and apparently did the factory reset in custom recovery. I guess this brought me to the state my HOX is in now.
So, how the things look like:
1. This is my current HOX info:
Code:
(bootloader) version: 0.5a
(bootloader) version-bootloader: 1.39.0000
(bootloader) version-baseband: 5.1204.162.29

(bootloader) battery-voltage: 3816mV
(bootloader) devpower: 54
[B](bootloader) partition-layout: None[/B]

(bootloader) build-mode: SHIP
(bootloader) boot-mode: FASTBOOT
(bootloader) commitno-bootloader: None
(bootloader) hbootpreupdate: 2
(bootloader) gencheckpt: 0
2. I can connect via fastboot/adb - flash, use adb shell, etc. I can also push files, create and write files in adb shell, so it looks like the card is not entirely dead
3. I can flash recovery (tried TWRP and CWM) - so no problem with charging anymore
4. No partition layout and I can’t mount storage:
Code:
~ # fdisk -l /dev/block/mmcblk0
Disk /dev/block/mmcblk0: 31.2 GB, 31268536320 bytes

5. Tried RUU that ought to be correct for my HOX & hboot version: (RUU_ENDEAVOR_U_JB_45_S_HTC_Europe_3.14.401.31_R_Radio_5.1204.162.29_release_302015_signed.exe) RUU software says it was flashed successfully, but when I restart the HOX it gets stucked on “HTC quitely brilliant” logo. Also, if I try to flash boot and system images manually (extracted from the ROM.zip from this RUU) the latter fails with “heap not enough” error (tried flashing on 32-bit Windows 7 and 64-bit OS X). This way or another, I don’t expect it to work, as there’s a problem with partition.
6. In the recovery I can’t wipe/erase a single thing (as in the example above)
7. As a result, no way to install a zip from recovery (due to missing partition layout) and no way to restore from backup (as it requires to mount /sdcard and it can't)...
8. ADB sideload doesn’t work (on TWRP: big red FAIL).
9. Some interesting lines from recovery.log:
Code:

So the most interesting part is the partition-layout: None is found with fastboot getvar all. I noticed that in almost all (all?) threads where people have problems with unsuccessful stock restore (RUU) or other "stuck on logo" and share their info from getvar there's a one common issue: partition-layout: None. Does anyone have idea what's the reason and how to get it back to partition-layout: Generic (this is the correct one as I assume looking at other threads)? I believe founding a fix for this one general problem would solve all of the mentioned not-booting/stuck-on-logo/soft-bricked issues.
I have no more ideas as I browsed through tons of posts and tried a lot of possible solutions with no effect. I believe there's a need to apply some low-level system "magic" I don't feel like being able to figure out myself. If you have any idea on how to proceed I’d be more than happy to try it out. My last try would be to flash a rom with more up-to-date android, but I'm afraid it would involve updating hboot and no chance to use RUU anymore.
Also, if you think it’s all useless given the state the HOX is in, please share, so I stop to waste my (and your) time - I already spent 2 weeks on it, learned a lot, read hundreds of threads on XDA - If I’d only knew that much before
On the other hand, if any member with magic skills would like to use my HOX to perform remote surgery to try to find a general solution for that problem, I'd be more than happy (well, just happy, I would be more if I could fix it ) to sacrifice my HOX even if there's a chance to kill it definitely.
Any clues guys? Maybe I should ask different question: do you know a method to check if the internal storage is faulty (chkdsk kind of thing)? Maybe my case is helpless (why I can read/write it from recovery, though).
Also, I was thinking about booting recovery (fastboot boot recovery - NOT fastboot flash recovery), hoping it won't read from storage but from memory, thus allowing me to unmount the storage and format (am I correct here? would it help anyway?). The thing is fastboot boot recovery won't work on HOX, but maybe there's a specific way that overrides kernel commandline (fastboot -c ... ) known already.
My HOX is stock, locked and working perfectly, and when I do a fastboot getvar all I also see partition-layout: none, so that cannot be the problem.

Thank you webpatrick, good to know that. So this one is not a problem.
I suspect bad sectors then (I wonder if that could be a reason for my HOX to restart on stock and gapps keep crashing on CWM back in the days it was alive). Any idea how to verify that and maybe fix?
Ok, so browsing (way) outside One X forum, I found GPT fdisk compiled for android. It is available in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24805392&postcount=74 or directly http://dl.dropbox.com/u/64885133/gptfdisk.zip. I could use it to load partition data from a backup file, but - obviously - I don't have one.
Could any of you guys run gdisk from the zip, back up GPT data to a file and post it?
Code:
./adb push gdisk /sbin
./adb shell
~ # gdisk /dev/block/mmcblk0
GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 0.8.4
Command (? for help): b
Enter backup filename to save: backup.gpt
The operation has completed successfully.
Command (? for help): q
Thanks in advance!
Couple points more:
1) To clarify, as I believe it matters, I have 32GB version, so I'd enjoy GPT back up for this one. Anyone, pleeeeease?
2) Also, one more question. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that:
a) If I flash firmware manually, I don't have to change the name of the zip file
b) If I "flash" automatically, I need to change the name of the firmware zip to the specific one, PJ46IMG.zip in my case, before I put it on the sd card
Not that I could try b), but just wondering if I've been trying a) in the correct way
Hi guys, I have been having issues installing viper and I have no idea what is going on. It does not want to work with anything but the stock roms. Phone is s-off, rooted and I have TWRP installed. I have tried TWRP 2.6 and 2.7 with same results. I have also tried 3.11.605.1 firmware.zip &
3.11.605.1 NO Boot.img firmware.zip with same results. I have also made sure to clear the cache. Logs are attached, can anyone point me in the right direction please

Hello,
I am trying to flash a new one onto my new HTC one 2014 Verizon. I grabbed the Viper and Revolution Roms, got S-Off, and TWRP installed however once TWRP seemed like I (or it) cleared the system partition some how without a stock backup (It said 0MB when checking the partitions).
Anyway, continued on my way to flashing...Well, heres some logs... ~.~

I have tired this multiple times, resetting to defaults or not. Deselection of features, ect...
Seems to be an issue with my system, not the rom... anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

I did search prior to posting, most of the 'solutions' was just to try try again from the beginning. Didn't have that option as at the time I did not have a backup.
But I was able to find one made form unofficial cwm before I switched to TWRP, and started all over.
Looks like it may be fine now.
Thanks!

I had this problem too when I was using M8 TWRP. Verizon variant is named M8_WLV. Using the M8_WLV TWRP I had no issues. XDA thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2717928 Hope that helps.
Similar issue on HTC One m8 GPE, no fix yet
I have similar issue when flashing ROM on my HTC One m8 GPE from play store.
I have unlocked bootloader & s-off and installed TWRP 2.7.0.2
I tried to install ViperOne and Revolution HD (choosing HTC One m8 International variant) many times, and every time the end of the ROM flashing process is symlink: some symlinks failed.
And when I reboot, I got a bootloop into recovery.
I also tried using different custom recovery like CWM and even verizon version of TWRP, but nothing worked.
I've searched back and forth, and don't see to find solutions here.

I have tired this multiple times, resetting to defaults or not. Deselection of features, ect...
Seems to be an issue with my system, not the rom... anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

Your log file looked similar to mine and I tried everything to get these ROM's to install. I had been trying to install the ROM from the SD card and I had nothing else to try so figured I would copy to the internal SD and give it a shot and that fixed the issues and the ROM installed no problem. Hope this solves your install issue too. Thanks
I am having the same issue on my HTC one m8 verizon version. Trying to flash Android Revolution HD... I've tried having it on internal memory and external and I've made sure I have the right TWRP installed. Every time the install finishes it says set_perm: some changes failed and twrp crashes. Any other ideas?
In case it's helpful for someone, here's a log file. I also read in another thread that someone had success if they wiped /system before trying to install. I'll see if that helps soon.

EDIT:
Wiping /system before flashing the rom was a success! No hitches at all, and had it up and running. However, since it's a verizon device, apparently the firmware isn't out yet. Because of this I had no wifi and really long boot times. I'm gonna flash back to stock until the firmware is released with the next verizon software update. Happy flashing everyone!
The solution that worked for me
I was struggling with this issue while trying to install several ROMs. The reason I was getting this is because I was starting with a GPE phone and was trying to install ROMs that we based on HTC's Sense build (Viper, ARHD, etc...)
The reason is that the partition sizes are different between GPE and stock HTC. I believe that you will encounter the same issue if you installed the GPE RUU on your phone and are trying to revert.
I followed the instructions found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2733523 which required me to flash the firmware from what I had back to an HTC version (after this step I got the HTC logo upon restart instead of the google logo) Flashing this firmware must set the partition sizes to the appropriate values because after this I was able to install the Viper ROM without issue.

Hey guys
I had this same issue and here is what i did.
Boot into CWM
wipe as usual
->Mounts and Storage->format system ->format Data ->Format Cache
->install zip ->your rom
voila!
Worked for me. Thank me if it helps
I have tried to install viper one 1.6.0 and it almost completely installs but then fails and the last line before the "install failed" screen says "set_perm: some changes failed" and then says, on the next screen, "Error ViperOneM8 v1.6.0 install failed Installer Status: 7 Please save the log file and post it in the ViperOne thread." I'm using TWRP.
here's the log file:

How do you install philz? I already have twrp and don't know how to switch it and I haven't found anything helpful while researching.

Download the latest Philz file from here: http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/m8, put your phone into bootloader mode, open a command prompt, and type "fastboot flash recovery philz_touch_x.xx.x-m8.img" (replace the 'x's with the version number). When it's done, you can reboot into recovery by typing "fastboot reboot" on the command prompt.
