i've had the Galaxy S3 for a while and the screen was pretty good, with the HTC One X's screen beating it by a little amount only because i dont like how LCD's blacks aren't pitch black (off). But the colors definitely beat the GS3's. I heard LG's True HD IPS is even better than those but i'm wondering how much better than the Notes new Samoled where they pretty much get rid of Pentile? Will the new LG Nexus display be that much better or how about HTC's sharp 1080P display coming out? If the difference is minimum i rather settle for Samsung. Aslo, have they taken care of the low brightness whites? because they were very grainy and gray on my Galaxy Nexus
I just tested a Note II today in a shop. The screen looked great but I am a bit concerned that on full brightness it was less bright than my Galaxy S II and the whites looked very greyish.
there are at least two threads already existing covering this topic, please search!
in short: it's again the luck of the draw. had 3 note2 devices so far, one display was terrible (yellow tint),
the other two had pixel faults and/or dust particles between the outer glas and the panel!
my 4th device will arrive tomorrow (from amazon.de), let's look how that one will be...
i have to mention that most people are not aware of these flaws, especially about the tint. it's because
they have no other note2 devices to compare, or they do not care as much as i am!
if i pay 600EUR for a device, i want to have a perfect screen!
I really can't decide on which tablet to go with. I'm going crazy, have ordered and cancelled back and forth out of being undecided.
(Im buying LTE version to replace my Note 3 as my main communications device, including phonecalls and networking)
Reasons for Pro 8.4:
I do a lot of reading, so white backgrounds are handled better with the SC LCD on the Pro (brighter), also less battery consumption on lighter backgrounds (also whiter to my understanding), i don't enjoy oversaturated colors on AMOLED Screens (i set my display as professional photo profile on my Note 3, which reduces oversaturation), plus Super Clear LCD (i think it's similar to IPS?) would be superior sharpness-wise against the pentile arrangement of the S Amoled?. I don't like the gold bezel on the S much but that can be covered with a skin i plan to buy, prefer the chrome one. Slightly faster processor. Cheaper.
Reasons for S 8.4:
Newer (by a couple of months) but thinking on longevity Samsung might make the S series their baby, that means slower software updates for the Pro and maybe less longevity software wise, 3 GB Ram makes it future proof. AMOLED has a lower screen longevity, i've seen Galaxies S2/S3 in stores that looks horrendous, and well, i might not have this tablet in 2-3 years, but if i do i prefer to have it looking as good as new. Lighter.
Anyone who has owned or currently owned both can compare and give their reasons on why they chose one over the other?
I know that AMOLED has come a long way in advancements but, are the whites now closer to SC LCD? Is the bluriness from the pentile arrangement gone vs SCLCD/IPS?
Thank you!

Do yourself a favor and go to a store and have a look at both tablet side by side and you will see the differences. The whites are whiter and black are near perfect pitch black. The pro screen looks washed out and to me colors aren't strickingly realistic. After looking at this screen long enough, i can't see myself going back to apple retina or any ips screen anymore. I just wish samsung software is on par with apple.
I have a note3 rooted running well so I decided to buy tab s 8.4 wifi. I found that the tab S response is relatively slow and most disappointed is that tab s 8.4 doesn't support 4K video. It is not smooth, relative to note3, in some 1080p video. It is far to my expectation. I am planning to sell it out.
Do you own an Note 3 with Exynos or Snapdragon?
My guess is that sluggishness is because of some early stage problems with Exynos 5 in conjunction with highres AMOLED. Very likely it gets matured as the hardware should be pretty capable.
I had the pro and changed it to the tab s. They are both very similar.
The pro had a little bit of a better battery life. I prefer the screen on the tab s. Love the fingerprint scanner and how thin it is. I prefer the tab s overall.

You like the screen on the S better, would you be more specific?
Are we speaking about shaprness, colors, blacks, whites?
Any other reasons to go with the S instead?
Thank you

I cant find the S in my local best buy, just the Pro. So i cant compare but im going to trust you.
You say whites are whiter? I own a Note 3, and well whites are good but not as good as an IPS screen, i thought Pro's SC LCD was just another name for IPS?
Touchwiz lags behind iOS, but i actually like android better.
Thanks for your input!
I was stuck making the same decision at Best Buy lol
I did end with with the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 after doing three days of a bunch of research reading reviews and comparing the pros and cons.
Why i chose the Tab S 8.4 over the Pro
- 2560x1600 Super AMOLED screen (insane contrast ratio, the whites are bright and, well white! And the blacks are truly black!)
- Exynos S Octa cpu (two quad core cpus vs one quad core in the pro)
- 3gigs ram
- sd card support up to 128gb
There are my reasons. If you can afford the extra, what is it now, like $50? I would go for the Tab S over the Pro!
I watch bunch of youtube videos and ended here

£100 price difference here if it was only £30 I'd defiantly go for the Tab S
Right now in the states on BedtBuys website, the tab pro is $329.99.
Just in case anyone did decidd to get the pro.

If its like the 10.5 your going to get a shock if you don't like over saturated colors, at least when you first switch it on, luckily the Basic profile isn't too bad it actually tracks pretty accurate but its still a touch over saturated.
There is a way to get a degree of adjustment as far as over saturation goes but you might find it effects other things, contrast etc.

i was in bahrain yesterday and managed to check out both sizes (only LTE versions) and wow indeed the screen is as good as they said it was. there was a demo video with a red lobster, i paused it and it looked like it was painted on or something.
wish they would sell the wifi versions only i dont really need the LTE

I was in the same situation, had the Tab Pro 8.4 and gave that to a family member and bought myself the Tab S 8.4. Finding similar things like better batter on the Pro, however the AMOLED screen is just gorgeous and also I much prefer the speaker placement on the Tab S for watching movies (proper stereo placement).
After returning the Nexus 6p for the battery issues on a brand new device, I'm considering buying the Z Play.
A thing that makes me doubt is the screen. The resolution is the same of my 3 years old Nexus 5, but with a bigger screen, so the overall PPI is worse.
I have stopped by a couple of shops but they only had the Moto Z, so I haven't been able to test the screen of the Play.
So my question is, is the screen really good when you look at it? I don't want to buy it and after first boot realize that even the Nexus 5 screen looks smoother...
It's a good looking display. Not as good as my 2K screen on my S7, but it is good for a 1080p screen. It's also an AMOLED, so the colors look nice and it has an amazing contrast ratio.
The PPI is amazing. QHD screens are nice but not massively different than FHD screens.
I love the screen, I think it's great and coming from my note 4, I don't even notice a difference. But honestly unless you're using it for VR you probably won't be able to tell a difference between 400 and 500+ PPI.
Compared to the 6P that it replaced, it really is a nice looking screen. Plenty bright even at the lowest setting, but I noticed vertical lines running through mine. Has anyone else noticed that?
None but I do get lag after the phone is not used in 3 or 4 hours. Haven't tried to flash a factory md5 yet but if it keeps it up
i'll have to get rid of it. Its really basic when it comes to stock settings and havent found an app to restore some tuning options.
honestly, the screen was my biggest concern coming from the S7 Edge (the edges on the Edge were just annoying).. but i really can't tell the difference, visually.
the moto Z play screen is just damn good. bright colors, clear lines. it just works. plus the phenomenal battery life just adds to the perks of this phone.
When some text appears in different colors on black background, it is clearly to notice that red is on a higher level than white and blue a bit below white. This is a thing I had with Samsung Galaxy S3 also, and I was glad when I wasn't using AMOLED anymore. Thought with smaller structures (resolution much higher) it would be less obvious, but it is clear to see. Under other circumstances the screen is really fine.
Its awesome!
Hello everyone.
In considering the Oneplus 5t as a replacement to my good old Samsung note 4, especially for the price compared to today's flashships.
One of the main factors when I chose any device is the screen quality. I understand the 5t scores really high in this sector, but I'm worried about the resolution and screen DPI.
My note 4 and all today's flagships have higher resolutions, and I'm wondering if anyone has compared the 5t screen with other devices and can notice any real difference in daily life, mainly while browsing pictures were pixels become more evident.
I considered the Note 8 and LG v30, but I really can't stand those curved edges, and I don't need a pen since I don't use the one on my note 4.
Thanks!!

I upgraded from the Note 4 to the OP3T and then the 5T. My decision was based on easy root and Dev community. I cannot notice a significant difference in screen resolution (if you look at TV resolution guides you'll see that you need to be insanely close to the screen to notice on something as small as a phone). OnePlus allows you to manually adjust the DPI to suit your preference so you can have tiny icons and such. I love this phone compared to my Note 4. Way snappier and no slow down from TW.
I personally have never thought "this screen would be better if it was 4k". But Samsung's infinity display is definitely a better display if that is your only concern.

Thanks for the reply.
Since you had a note 4, how would you compare the screen with the 5t one? Would you consider the 5t an upgrade in terms of quality, color accuracy, brightness, watching angles etc?
Also, is the 5t camera overall an upgrade compared to the note 4?
Thanks

Full disclosure I didn't use the camera on the Note 4 all that much, but looking through the pictures that I took with it the OP5T seems to take much better pictures. The portrait mode is also great to have.
As for the screen, I personally don't notice a difference in quality. Small text still has clearly defined edges that I can see. I don't use my phone for VR so I can't comment there. I really like the colors on the display and didn't notice any significant color difference between the two, but this is subjective. It is plenty bright and I think that might be an upgrade from the Note 4 as I seem to recall having to manually adjust the brightness to actually see it whenever I stepped outside and still having some issues. Viewing angles are also great with this phone. I don't have any color shift unless it's a pretty extreme angle.
The one thing the screen has going for it is it's size and lack of bezels, which I really love. Other than that I'd say you'd be hard pressed to find a significant difference between the two unless you looked really closely or had special equipment. So not really an upgrade in screen quality, but definitely not a downgrade. The rest of the phone is a huge improvement though. Way faster to use and a much better update schedule.

Thanks . Such a reply is much better than any review on the net, as you gave real life experience.
I'm really satisfied with the Note 4 display, and if this isn't a downgrade, that's grade. Being with much less bezels and overall lighter is a huge plus too.
I'm a Note 4 to 3T and now 5T convert.
Updates aren't an issue with OP, they're doing a fine job now. If I had to complain, and I don't need to, it's the security updates are always behind.
I don't have the issues that a lot of others are having. I also don't have a lot of crap apps on my phone. 100% stock with dark theme, BT always on, brightness between half and 3/4 and I'm averaging 1.25 day of battery and 8hrs of SOT.
In regards to the screen, it's made by Samsung. I'm surprised at how easy it was to adjust to. Choose your preset or customize it and run with it.
Camera, hmm, it's good but not as good as the Note 4 in low lighting. Once you get to know how to use the camera, other pics come out quite nicely. Most of the pics I take are of circuit boards and car parts.
Audio, unfortunately I'm hearing impaired so I try not to comment on it. I will say that it seems like every other update the volume output changes either up or down. I notice this when I'm connected via BT to my cars radio.
I can't walk and chew gum so I'm not a VR user.
Hellz yeah it is. It's excellent and it's even better than some QHD displays out there like the G6.
Sent from my SM-N950U1 using Tapatalk
I honestly wouldn't worry about the screen resolution, it's fine, honest. On the plus side, the HD+ screen means the GPU has less pixels to push around.
My best advice would be to compare it side by side with other devices in the flesh if you can, that way you can see if you like the colour tone of the screen. I've spent several years using a succession of cheap devices bought directly from China. All of them have had LCD screens rather than AMOLED. I'm finding it very hard to get used to the screen because it looks so yellow whenever looking at anything white. If you want accurate colours (reds and blues accurate) you need to have the screen set to sRGB or DCI P3 and with either of those options whites look very yellow indeed. I've compared my phone to two other 5ts now and they have all been the same. I think I'm gradually getting used to it, but I've had to set the screen colour to 'custom' and as cool possible to get anywhere close to acceptable whites. The downside of this is it comes with very oversaturated reds. When comparing the 5t to the panels on the S8+ and Note, they seem whiter and generally a better panel.
Having said all this, I'm happy with the device in most ways and the resolution is basically fine for me.

I actually find that the Samsung panels that I've been looking at (S8/Note 8/S7) have been generally the same as the 5T as far as whites go (very good), but the S8/Note 8 tends to have reddish whites and the S7 had a greenish white. The 5T was much better.

That's interesting, I wonder if the type of lighting makes a difference? In the shop where I compared them my eyes honestly thought the Samsungs had more pop AND better colours. Their whites were closest to the LCD screen on my old Xiaomi Redmi Note 2. I also felt that the middle range Samsung's had all the same 'issues' as my 5t, i.e. a bit yellow when displaying white backgrounds, and very over saturated reds that look almost scarlet or florescent. I guess it must come down to what each person is used to and how they perceive colour? I'm gradually getting used to the 5t and I really like how it looks when playing a game. Doom 3 looks really lovely on it

I think there are a lot of factors going on. Lighting, personal perception, etc.
I went from the original Oneplus One to the Nexus 6P and now to the 5T. At first, I was also a bit worried that the display on the 5T would be less sharp compared to the 6P, due to the difference in DPI. But when I got the 5T, I could hardly tell the difference. The display was just as good and even brighter and vivid.
Although OP5T screen is beautiful perfect, But if screen is still a concern, LG V30 is a way to go.
I guess only difference is resolution...Pixel counts.

Uhm, no.
The V30 has one of the worst screens of all current (flagship) phones.
The one in the 5T is way, way better.
In direct comparison with the S8 I can tell the difference. But its not to great. Colors and everything else are really similar. Unless you use it for VR its very ok in my opinion.

Can confirm. Had a pixel 2 xl for a few weeks (same LG POLED panel). Brightness uniformity is horrible and whites are very grainy. Don't miss anything about that display.
Just got the US version, 64GB capacity... A warning to everyone that the phone is not 190g (6.7oz) as advertised on their website. I weighed it and it's actually 205g = 7.23oz (without sd card and without sim card).
I would never have thought to weigh the phone except that I noticed the phone being noticeably heavier (and more tiring to hold) compared to my Pixel 2 XL (at 175g). Before weighing it, I just couldn't believe that a supposed 15g (0.53oz) difference would be this noticeable -- so I weighed it to be sure.
I'm still deciding whether to keep it. I also haven't rooted it yet because I want to use it for a month or so to make sure there are no hardware issues where I may need to get a replacement.
UPDATE: The false advertisement is even worse. On the US Asus Store site where I purchased the phone, it's advertising the weight as 0.4lbs = 181grams, even less than the 190grams advertised on their general tech specs page.
Not only US version, but EU version too...
I weighed:
200.2g phone with one SIM card
216.8g phone with one SIM card and this silicone case https://ru.aliexpress.com/item/32891428136.html
16.6g silicone case itself
Oh wow, not just the US version.
I'm trying to figure out why ~1oz extra feels so much heavier (and tiring to hold).... maybe the small increase in thickness and the change in weight distribution is making it more tiring to hold?

Just found out that the false advertisement is even worse.

Hmmm, doesn't glass make phones heavier? Asus has a gorilla glass 3 on the back and gorilla glass 6 on the front. (in addition to 5k mah battery). That contributes to the weigh of it. If the back was only plastic or even aluminum, it might be lighter. But i take the main OP point. Specs should be on point and not off from customers tests. (like weight). They should have advertised the original weight rather than making it look more appealing by reducing it on the specs lol.
PS: (I personally don't care much about weight since, well, I spend the entire day dealing with heavy objects and the phone should feel like a feather to me (if i ever end up buying it). Also I have never though about buying or not buying a phone basing my decision on the "weight" factor.) LOL
Aside from the weighting, @neo_lithic3K , have you experience any technical issues? Please do create a thread regarding that if you do find some. Thank you!
Yeah, I'd imagine glass and bigger battery would make it heavier. I agree that the weight isn't normally a major factor in my decisions. The only reason I noticed it is because, before buying, I was comparing dimensions of the Pixel 2 XL vs Zenfone 6 to make sure it's not too big... and I also happened to see the weight as well (and thought... ok 15g isn't much heavier).
I'm hoping that I'll get used to the increased weight.. but I think a difference between 'dealing with heavy objects' all day and holding a smartphone is that the way I hold my phone isn't the same I would hold/carry, eg, a hammer or a UPS package. With a smartphone, it's more in the fingers.... a bit of a delicate balance between having a firm grip but not dropping it and not accidentally touching the screen at wrong place. The phone is also thicker so I have to stretch and extend my finger muscles just a tad bit more to hold it firmly.
No other technical issues but I did notice some technical differences. I did notice decreased brightness when looking at the phone from a 45 degree angle compared to my Pixel 2 XL which was noticeably brighter. Not a dealbreaker of course. I also notice that the vibration seems weaker compared to the Pixel 2 XL to the point where I cant feel it in my jeans pocket, even with vibration on max.

PS: (I personally don't care much about weight since, well, I spend the entire day dealing with heavy objects and the phone should feel like a feather to me (if i ever end up buying it). Also I have never though about buying or not buying a phone because basing my decision on the "weight" factor.) LOL
Aside from the weighting, @neo_lithic3K , have you experience any technical issues? Please do create a thread regarding that if you do find some. Thank you!

No other technical issues but I did notice some technical differences. I did notice decreased brightness when looking at the phone from a 45-degree angle compared to my Pixel 2 XL which was noticeably brighter. Not a dealbreaker of course. I also notice that the vibration seems weaker compared to the Pixel 2 XL to the point where I cant feel it in my jeans pocket, even with vibration on max.

That's the downside of OLED screens vs IPS screens. IPS screens in some occasions are crispier than OLED screens. But certain angles do affect the overall brightness and visibility on IPS screens if compared with OLED, (in pixel 2 xl situation P.OLED). If there were only a way to create a screen with both worlds (a screen that wouldn't get a permanent burnt image and get crispy images and infinite contrast ration under normal circumstances, and high contrast ration under sunlight) boi that screen would be a beast!
hmmm vibration weaker. I wonder if we could change the vibration motor :3 . I feel like buying a broken zenfone 6 just to experiment with that. LOL
LOL that would be interesting... changing the motor out for a better one. Wishful thinking of course... but I was also wondering myself if it's possible to swap out the battery for a slightly lower capacity one. I'm never far from an outlet so I wouldn't mind getting a lower capacity battery if it makes the phone lighter....
LOL maybe in 10-20 years... technology would get to the point where we could get a screen with all those positives.
