Are there any working cpu temperature monitoring apps out for the G3? The two I've used both say the chip is running at a minimum of 60C. That can't be possible. My GTX770 doesn't get that hot. I know there is no active cooling but still, the phone is barely warm to the touch and barely gets close to hour when playing a game or something.

Mooncakes' CPUTemp works and has alarms. Give it a go.
Thats the one I'm actually running. When it's sleeping, it goes down to 35C, but shoots up to 50C when it powers back on.
CPU Temp in Statusbar. It's an xposed mod.
I use system tuner. Programmable widgets.
Also trickster mod shows both battery and CPU temps on the first page.

I actually put this on too so I could see it at all times. Does anyone know what the safe temp ranges are?

I use the colored temp setting instead of auto. I set the red to come on at 61 C. I've seen the CPU reach up to 84 for a couple seconds right after reboot.

Awesome. I didn't know there was an app that showed all the temps per app. Is it in the Play store?

That's the same app that I use as well, called CPU Temp. I got that with an active screen temp display that can be moved anywhere on your screen and is a top layer display. The only caveat is that it seems to mess up Lux, as it's a live display, it doesn't allow Lux to dim the screen as much as it usually can, it dims it more so than the stock slider, but not as dim as it can be with the live CPU display taken off.
I also have Temperature Guard Free to always show my battery temp at the top, as well as Cell Signal Strength -dbm (for my actual, real time signal coverage) and Internet Speed Meter Lite (to show my active data speeds), all with persistent notification displays.
That way, with a glance, I can see all my phone's info, temps, speeds and signal at a glance, for full, real time data gorging.
The Internet Speed Meter app is good, because whenever Tmo's data connection stalls, I can check to see if it's actually dribbling a connection or it's just stalled and needs to be reset.

Could the notification light (ie. from Wordfeud or text) keep phone at 200 Mhz instead of deep sleep? CPUspy shows my phone at 7 hrs at 200 Mhz overnight, then only 2 hours of deep sleep. I had a late night notification and didn't turn it off until morning. Thanks.

ANSWER/HELP/SUGGESTIONS:
If the notification awakened your phone's display, then the answer is yes. If the notification didn't awaken your phone's display from sleeping, then no.
Also your screen's on/off min/max CPU frequency could be apart of the "problem" (if this is a problem you're having) you're dealing with.

Thanks, but the phone normally sleeps fine, but only been checking it a few days. I know I got a Wordfeud notification in the middle of the night and when I responded this morning and checked and hour or two later, saw only a little deep sleep and 7 hours at 200 Mhz. Display was not on, and don't think it lights up when I get the notification. Just a tone and blinking red light. I can't add the 100 Mhz step because then the phone won't wake from sleep.

I understand what you mean by underclocking the phone too low, so that isn't an option.
Let's try troubleshooting the problem, then shall we?
Tonight I'd like for you to go to sleep, take note of what apps were all running and also sleep with the Wordfeud notification off. Wake up in the morning and see if the same problem persist. From there I'll have enough information to work with. Oh and make sure that no app is waking the phone while you sleep. So that your phone's display and yourself do one thing that it needs to do, sleep.

I haven't used my phone much today and my wordfeud buddy must be sleeping one off today so have not got any notifications and phone is sleeping 75% of the time whereas last night with the notification I only got 22% deep sleep. So whether it is the wordfeud notification or notification in general, there is something holding the phone at 200 Mhz.

Start with the wordfeud notification being off....then try just notification in general. I thought you were a moderate user of your phone. From the looks of it you use your phone lightly which makes solving the problem easier.
Post back after tonight as to if turning off the wordfeud's notification solved the problem.

Normally I am, but had a virus past 2 days so been real mild use, like you said, makes it easier to notice strange behavior. Probably best test would be to reboot and get a text and see after 15 minutes or so, then do the same with Wordfeud to see what is going on...thanks.

You could also do a fresh install of the rom after a fresh install do this:
- Send a text with all notifications off, to about 3 people, put phone in sleep mode, come back 15 minutes later, check if that's the problem
IF NOT MOVE ON
- Send a text with all notifications on, to about 3 people, put phone in sleep mode, come back 15 minutes later, check if that's the problem

Thank you...good stuff there. So far my text notification beeps, flashes the red light for about a minute then stops, phone goes into deep sleep. Wordfeud must be having issues tonight because I can't get a notification from it. Will try again tomorrow for Word Feud. This may have all been fixed with the reboot.
I always thought text message keeps flashing light until you aknowledge it though.

No actually they flash for a specified period of time (dependent upon the rom's/phone's setting for it). Also the problem with not getting a notification from wordfeud could be simply solved by wiping the app's data & cache, then rebooting and it'll be like a fresh install of the app.
So again the above post should hit the nail on the head for you. If it does please post what the problem was so that others can learn from it.

What is the lowest you can underclock your phone while sleeping? Because if its 100Mhz then use setCPU and make two profiles and that is the set the min to 100Mhz while charging and sleeping. But if you can't underclock that low then what is the lowest you can underclock to besides 200Mhz? Because if you can't underclock any lower than your phone sitting at 200Mhz for 7hz is GOOD

I am using Voltage Control and when I add the 100 Mhz step with no undervolting, my phone will not wake from sleep without battery pull. My GF's phone has SetCPU and it appears to show some usage at 100 Mhz (1%) and also sits at 200 Mhz while on the charger. I guess that is the battery charge monitoring circuit and code running.
As long as it is normal that is cool. Thanks for helping me figure this out. I guess sometimes too much info can cause problems...damn you CPUspy! LOL!

When I on my Wifi and connect, browse like 30 minutes, I experience some warm temperature on my upper part of the screen (near the speaker)
I installed Android tuner and System Tuner to check the temperature.
If I turned on the wifi and browse for 20-30 minutes, my CPU temp is on 45-48
But when I removed all the apps, my idle temp is 40.
I disabled the GPS and also the sync.
But my idle temp is still at 40..
Thanks!
my idle temp is around 27-28C, GPS on, 3G and no wifi.
I think the issue u might have is the sync where if there's new data being pushed to your phone, it wakes the phone to 'work'.
also depends if ur using the 'power save' option?
then u need to think about if ur using any case that will limit the heat escaping from the phone?
Mentioning an unit's temperature makes no sense until you mention your ambient temp.
Mine runs at 27/28 on idle, when charging it goes upto 32.5°C. And my ambient temp is 25-26, and it's almost winter here, lol.
Sent from my GT-N7100
my ambient temp. is from 27-32.
Do you think this is normal?
Thanks!
I'm on stock, rooted, s-off
my device is getting extremely hot during normal use.(i dont play games at all, just whatsapp, facebook, news etc..)
sync is off, auto brightness.no google location reporting and history, no google now or history.
and using bbs to see what is going on ,i have no wakelocks and looking at battery screen, screen on time and awake time are almost identical.so nothing is keeping my device awake.
but for some reason, when the device is idle, the cpu goes nuts!
i installed cpu status bar xposed module so i could monitor cpu on real time, and i see the device jumping allot from 300mhz to 960 and 1000+ for no reason.(without touching it, and no apps running).when i touch the screen it scales to maximum.
it drives me crazy because i dont understand why the cpu behave like that.there is no logical reason for cpu going to max when i'm typing text.
its unbearable, cause its getting really hot while i hold it.
i have tried various kernels(elementalx, skydragon, faux, ionx, hacker kernel, but all of them shows that behavior.
on my old i9100, i never got that behavior, ondemand governor was perfect and i could reach 4 hours of screen on time.with the m8, i can barley pass it , going for 4-5 hours, because its draing too fast.
any suggestions?
*EDIT*
tried a factory reset, and i just installed xposed with cpufreq status bar module, and the device is still going nuts.WTF?
Can I ask... are you sure this is abnormal? I mean, are you seeing ill effects? Is the device laggy? Is your screen-off battery time awful?
All OS's do stuff in the background, and "idle" doesn't really mean anything at all to be honest -- even when you "don't have any apps running" there are apps running, and you'll always see the CPU cycle from idle to low speed to high speed if you're looking for it.

i know there are background process and apps, and i don't except the device to stay at 300mhz all the time, but its quite annoying to hold on to a device and feel its temperature rising to insane levels without doing anything fancy with it.just texting.and every touch ramp the cpu to the max frequency, its weird.and unnecessary.
i don't know if its normal behavior, as i mentioned, my old i9100(galaxy s2) would not act like this. and i could get 4 hours of screen on time, and here, i get 4-5 hours max.it dose not seem logical.
I'm not using lte of nfc or BT.my reception is full(both wifi and cell).
i just want to know if this a normal behavior? anyone else having this heat buildup on light use?
I have a similar problem there on M8S. I killed half the background tasks, disabled syncing, auto backups, and then I open FBreader(or any other app) at 30% brightness and all the cpu cores go to 50 degrees C, heat up my battery to 43 degrees C. It results in loss of 40% of battery charge in just an hour. With screen off my device usually consumes 1-2% an hour. Whatever I do, I have never seen at least one core sleeping, they always work at 600-900MHz.
All I can find are vague descriptions. Nothing saying what exactly it's doing. From my experience thus far it's doing nothing. I am not getting better battery.

From what I know it lowers the CPU clock speed and decreases brightness. All with the intent of saving battery.
I read that while it DOESN'T limit the CPU, it does lower the brightness and cuts out your data/BT/location/NFC in order to preserve the little bit of battery.
Edit: And syncs.

I don't think it actually does any of that though. I have been using it a lot the past few days half on half off. I still get all MMS and emails right away plus my photos are syncing with google. My brightness doesn't change (auto or not). plus I have BT and WIFI on all the time for smart watch and of course data usage . Maybe the processor, but im not even sure of that. Guess I could do benchmarks with it on and off and see. I just feel like this feature is doing nothing at this time. On my nexus 5 I could really see the processor throttle and brightness him with battery saver.

Mine only does that under 15% battery. Seems like its doing nothing over that.
Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk
The default is under 15% and when it kicks in, i definitely notice a difference in the phone.
You can change it to immediately from 15% and i bet you will notice a difference at any battery percentage.
Cpu speed is not affected, just checked this.
Brightness was indeed cut off considerably, haven't checked for other things yet :good:
I figured out why it wasn't working for me. Simply clicking the icon to green in the pull down only enables it when it gets before 15 percent. Didn't force it on now like I thought it was.
Why is there so little discussion on this feature? I found very few threads on this and this was the most active conversation even though it is so old. I found out today I could enable this feature at anytime, not just at 5 or 15%. So I have it enabled at 100% battery and testing today. Upon enabling battery saver mode and restrict idle apps, the screen immediately went dim. I turned it back up slightly. I also noticed apps acting different. Toggling between apps is quicker and the animations are gone. Also, I'm using chrome and it's acting different. It's hard to explain, but if I'm navigating from one website to another, it is feels like it is refreshing every time, it doesnt feel faster. Im not sure what it is doing but someone with more experience will probably be able to pinpoint exactly what is happening. It's not standard chrome behavior.

Not sure with the Chrome part of it. I use a different browser. With FireFox everything feels about the same as before.
I also noticed the animations are removed so there is no fancy domino effect or sliding going on. It's all instant and to be honest it feels heck of a lot quicker this way.
Screen is much more dim and is extremely conservative for the most part.
Clock speed is the same. Although I wonder if there is some sort of under the hood change such as MPDecision switching over to battery saving mode. It personally makes no sense to leave it as is considering in the past it use to cap the clock speed.
So using battery saver today along with restrict apps in background, the former definitely shuts down background data. I noticed Google play store not authenticating paid for apps. I had to go to the play store to launch the app and re-authenticate. That is where I received the warning that background data is off. I have a weather widget and that does not appear to be updating as that uses background data. I have a barometer widget and that does appear to be working as that uses sensor data. All that is required to re-enable background data is to uncheck restrict background apps under the battery saver mode. As of right now, I am at 71% battery and 2 hours 14 minutes screen on time, 3 hrs 53 minutes on the battery. I'm mostly using chrome while screen is on and podkicker and listened to about an hour of audio and a little bit of teamspeak usage with my Bluetooth headset. Brightness is at 37% which is pretty dim in this mode. I'd say it's equal to 15% in regular mode bit good enough to see.
Update, I went all the way to 25% battery remaining yesterday and I had right at 5 hour SOT. In my opinion, this mode is not worth the hassle. Background data is off and that breaks a few things. Screen is pretty dim and I ended up turning it up anyway. I have had similar battery life in the past anyway. I have had 7 hours 20 minutes of SOT before without this mode on and all my widgets working. I'm going to leave this mode off.
It saves battery

I need somebody's help. The coolest my Note 4 CPU/GPU seems to get is about 53 degrees C and that's when I turn it on after it's been asleep on my desk. It is not a rogue app or anything like that because I have done both Factory resets and I have install custom roms, so everything has been factory reset multiple times. The water damage sticker indicates no water damage whatsoever. I know phones can get hot when gaming, my Note 4 gets to anywhere between 70 to 85 degrees Celsius and I am just wondering if that's normal I reduced my screen resolution to 720P and disabled two cores of the quad core processor and it does not seem to help one bit. Is this temperature normal or do I need to get rid of the phone?
PS when doing normal browsing it seems to hover around 60 to 67 degrees C
And the battery does not seem to go over 37 degrees Celsius

Okay, so I got rid of my Note 4 so this is off of memory (full-disclosure). My Note 4 always ran pretty hot when it had to do anything. When flashing ROMs I'd be lucky if the CPU was below 70 C and any time I'd be playing a GPU intensive game it would get too hot to touch. I never had a lot of issues with the battery temp being too high though despite this.
As far as solutions go:
1) Screen res might help.....but I would try my other suggestions first
2) I wouldn't recommend disabling cores, it just makes the other two have to work harder to accomplish the same tasks and may be worse overall.
3) Kernel adiutor will allow you to do two things: adjust thermal throttling and adjust max GPU/CPU frequencies. I always reduced the max GPU frequency on this phone to lower the temps and adjusted thermal throttling to 55 C. The only CPU adjustments I did were to make sure the CPU wasn't overclocked.
4) I know you said it wasn't a rouge app, but get a task viewer (this is a good one) just to make sure (I had Nova taking 25% CPU usage in the background because I restored it from TiBu).
I saw your post in the NSeven thread and decided to respond, but please in the future try not to post errors in other threads unless you have the issue in that ROM. It sounds like you might have the same issue in that ROM as well, but you didn't say so in your post.
Well first of all I would like to say thank you! I have been hoping for a while that someone would have some knowledge on the subject and I very much appreciate yours. Secondly, I apologize and I will try to refrain from posting the wrong thing in the wrong area in the future. Thirdly I have kernel auditor when I changed their frequencies on my CPU cores they just change right back. If I set a minimum it will stay but then if I try to set a maximum it resets them both to the default setting. I will turn my other course back on though thank you for that information do you have any idea why I may be having this frequency issue?

You're welcome, and no worries for the post . As for your third point it would be really helpful if you tell me what you're running.
Could you list: kernel, ROM, root method, Android version, and any kernel mods (govtuner, skynet, etc)?
Also, does the same thing happen when you set a GPU max frequency? Have you tried having the settings run on boot and then reboot the phone?
Yes I have tried that a couple of times I am currently running the nseven ROM with the CPU frequencies set at a minimum of 300 megahertz and a maximum of 1190 megahertz, or at least that's what I'm attempting to do LOL I have not tried changing the GPU Max frequency. The N7 ROM I believe is Android version 6.0.1. here is what I have tried
Wiping cache in recovery
Starting in safe mode
Factory resetting
Turning off certain settings such as WiFi calling, data Etc.
Using apps such as greenify to limit background processes.
Changing screen resolution to 720P
I actually installed this ROM hoping that it would make a difference because I have the same exact issue on the stock ROM before I ever unlock my bootloader or rooted my phone at all. And according to the sticker on the back of the phone it is not nor has it ever been water damaged. The picture I have attached shows my phone's activity just while writing this reply to you.
