Hi all,
Was just wondering;
I have a Rogers HTC M8 and want to install a custom ROM
Do I need to unlock bootloader via HTC, or is there another way now that we have S-OFF ?
And if there is, please do share
Thanks in advance, much appreciated

Thanks so much
But it says I need to be S-OFF in order to proceed, and to get S-OFF I need root.
So how can I root in order to do it ? Would weak sauce work ?
Sorry, newB here when it comes to this
Go to firewater S-off website, the second method could let you s-off without unlock boatload and flash custom recovery as well as custom Rom.

Hi and thanks for the reply,
I tried the second method but the weaksauce wont work on my Rogers device, I get an error...
I am guessing the only other option is to use HTCdev ??

I think that's okay to do HTCdev unlock bootloader first then flash custom recovey and get root.
Then, flash custom rom.
Don't worry dude.
when im trying to root my m8, i boot my device to bootloader and i got ***TAMPERED*** above ***UNLOCKED***, what is the problem? moreover i cant boot into recovery.

No problem, Tampered flag means that you tried to unlock the bootloader.
After you unlock bootloader you need to flash a custom recovery to be able to root.
Are you following a guide?
Try here:

Sunshine S-Off will be your best bet. It's $25 though.

whenever i reinstall a stock ruu.zip or ruu.exe i still get the red a boot warning about beind a dev version im using the latest developers ruu but orriginally it was a uk vodafone branded. is it because im installing a developers ruu do proper developers edition phones still get this warning ?? trying to figure how i can stop it without installing modded a boot ? thanks.
There is no way to remove that except with a modded aboot, unless you relock.

Red text is due to S-off. Relocking doesn't make it go away. Modded aboot (no red text versions) hide the red text by replacing the letters of the warning with spaces.
Returning to S-on is the only way to truly clear the flag that triggers the text, but why would you want to do that?

Used to be it showed up just from unlocking the bootloader, not just s-off.

I've had the mini, the M8 and M9 and red text has been from S-off on those three. I can't speak to any devices older than those, though.

But my phone says that it is locked I relocked it and then used the fastboot command to change the flag to locked not relocked ?
i have the Developer M9 and its S-Off and i dont get the red text when stock after i flash recovery or Custom Rom i get it. i think it the custom recovery that triggers it.
so it couldnt be the S-Off that triggers it gotta be something else

So basicly once you have used a custom recovery there is no way to get rid of it I even flashed stock recovery before doing the run and same thing ?

You probably flashed modded firmware that removed the red text.

Looks like it may have changed with the mini or just prior. I know with the One X, unlocking got you the red text because we didn't get s-off for a long time. It may have changed with the M7, because IIRC I s-off'd that right away and may not have been paying attention to when the red text showed up (as was the case this time).

You know, that, in fact, is what I thought. Because if you RUU back to stock, a modded aboot would be overwritten.
Jus so everyone understands I got a Developer Edition M9 not a converted to Developer Edition.
Developer Edition M9
Stock 5.1 rom
Stock firmware
Rooted
S-Off
TWRP Recovery
The only time I see the Red Text is when I boot to recovery from Bootloader.
I do not get the Red Text when I do the following...
Restart phone
Shut down & Power on phone
Boot to download mode
Boot from Download Mode to Bootloader.
But when I boot from Bootloader to recovery and phone restarts to recovery then I get the Red Text..

Yep I ran it on my sprint phone using the latest stock Nougat on Monday. Afterwards phone came back up with some weird encryption thing so I ended up ruu-ing but did achieve s-off.

No, I'm pretty sure you need to be rooted first before s-off if you're on nougat.
So,
1) unlock bootloader
2) flash TWRP and root
3) s-off using sunshine (25$)
Can i use the sunshine app to unlock bootloader on android 7 instead of htcdev
then use the app to s-off

As I mentioned, you need to unlock the bootloader and root before being able to use sunshine, so how can you use sunshine to unlock the bootloader if it's not already unlocked?
On Marshmallow you could do what you asked.
gotcha, I was trying to avoid using htcdev for unlocking bootloader

NO way around it now. I just got my HTC 10 over the weekend and went through the whole learning process you are. I think my phone was out of commission more than it was up and running all Sunday. Luckily it's pretty hard to brick.
Hi All,
I am now on Android 7.0 and my htc 10's motherboard is not working.
Previously, I have unlocked the bootloader and therefore, before I go to the repair center, i have to lock my bootloader back.
I know i can S-OFF it with sunshine, what should i do after S-OFF?
Thanks a lot!!!
I guess my htc 10 should have LOCKED status for bootloader and also S-ON in order to have the warranty.
Would any of you please help?

When using sunshine, choose the s-off/Locked option. Then go back s-on.

do you mean by clicking S-off/Locked option, it will then go back to both S-ON and Locked?

No I mean after using sunshine with the s-off/Locked option, you need to do s-on manually. This will set you s-on with your bootloader locked.
The s-on procedure is described here:

You could end up with a brick.
Ruu before setting to s-on is the best method.
