Can't access certain folders on storage using USB/Computer - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there,
Im using MTP to connect my G3 to my Computer using Win8.1. Some folders are simply not visible.
E.g.: I installed Navigon to my G3 and using the App "Solid Explorer" I can see the folder on the internal storage, but it just doesn't show up via MTP. Even after rebooting the G3 and my computer.
Bug? Or "Feature"?
Im a little bit confused and anxious that something is broken with my G3 because this never happened to me before using my Galaxy S3 via MTP for two years.
Thanks in advance

A large number of folders will not be visible via mtp. This is to stop you messing things up and ruining your phone, and partly because not all areas of the android phone can be read by windows as it is not an os based on a windows file systen.
If you want to view all areas of your phone on your phone itself, use root explorer.
If you want to view all areas of your phone via computer, download a program called android commander (google it)
Both methods will require root, android commander will also require usb debugging to be running and the correct drivers to be installed on your pc.

Oky thanks for your reply. I understand those reasons as security-measurements. I just didn't know them yet from my old Galaxy S3 (running only Android 4.2). So probably they were "invented" in newer versions like Android 4.3 or 4.4 as security restrictions.
So when I understand correctly: Everything is fine with my phone as this is usual behaviour!? Then Im glad to hear this Thanks for posting.

[SOLVED] ADB Setup for Windows

Hey all. This is for those of you having issues with ADB and Windows.
Source link
This is assuming you already have the SDK, it's installed, you're just having issues with the actual ADB driver.
Basically you download PDANet - it will take care of of the ADB drivers for you. Note - you WILL have to reboot the computer before the drivers actually work. Thanks to robinsondom for the linky, and thanks to theunlockr.com for that fantastic guide! It appears to cover basically any issues you may run into with ADB and Windows!
Hi arrrghhh,
I had a similar problem getting the drivers to work on my PC. I bookmarked a site that was very helpful, as I recall, in resolving this. Unfortunately, I still might have too few posts to upload a link. Let's see...
ok, that didn't work... maybe my next post...?
Hmm, you would think that 3+ years of responsible "lurking" (plus a few posts) might take me out of the "new user" category and allow me to post links -- but it seems I still need 5 posts no matter what. Maybe after this post (my 5th)...?
Trying one last time to post the link I mentioned...
http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/06/how-to-set-up-adb-usb-drivers-for-android-devices/
I hope you find it helpful.

lol I just thought a bunch of people responded
Unfortunately lurking for 3 or 30 years doesn't really make a difference. All goes by post count, you need 5 to be able to post a link. You're now at 6, congrats
I'll try that out now... I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks!
Update - that did it! I'm definitely saving this article. It seems USBDeview should only be used if your PC isn't prompting you.
I was pretty skeptical, but for whatever reason the drivers that PDANet offered to the system it took, when the ones that worked previously (same PC, same phone....) didn't work. Go figure.
Thanks again dude!
I updated my first post with credit & the solution. Awesome!
iv dl SDK and Java SE development kit and now what should i do..iv read the posts and manuals but im not understanding them help would be appreciated..tnx

Download and install Droid Explorer standalone version.
Hi,
I've installed SDK and then the PDANet Software and it solved my driver problems. And now with the Droid Explorer I should be able to access my device and the SD card, but the Explorer does not find my HTC Touch Pro. What shall I do now??
Sry, I'm a Newbie in this Android stuff and I am very confused ^^

Hrm. Do you see the two USB-related icons in the notification bar in Android? It indicates two things, USB debugging (aka ADB) and USB mass storage (not working yet... probably not till we're full NAND.) So make sure it's enabled there... One other possibility is you're using a very old kernel that doesn't include USB support...?
ADB is a very advanced tool/topic... it's mainly for debugging. Not really noob-friendly - we're not at that stage yet.
Yes, I can see the two icons. I don't know what you mean with kernel?!
I just want to put some music on my device, without pulling out the card or using Windows Mobile Am I on the wrong way?

Uhm... probably easier to just pull the card. ADB is really meant to be used for debugging issues.
It's just the only way we can currently access the device in lieu of USB mass storage support.
Not sure what confused you about my kernel statement. Perhaps you need to update your kernel, that's all I'm saying... if you're running an older kernel, it might not have the correct support.
However, if you saw the icons in the notification bar, I would think USB support is working.

[Q] 4.1.1 File Transfer problem

So I got that OTA update for 4.1.1, a lot of things changed and now when I connect it to my computer to transfer stuff, I can't just drag it into the folders as before. It only brings up HTC Sync Manager, any way to get the device files to come up again?
I've already got a thread running on this issue.
Join in if you feel like it, hopefully we can all come up with a solution.

So does this mean there's no way to mount the drive either?
Because I'm trying to use doubleTwist instead but it says I need to mount the phone. Option isn't where it used to be...

I'm using a Mac too. This is getting annoying, but I've found alternative options for now. Not too fond of them but it'll do for now.
Google changed it in JB for all devices to be connected as MTP . If you really need it that badly , maybe go to CWM Recovery Mount USB .

[Q] Android File Transfer? Why?

Guys, I'm back again with another dumb question.
While running ICS 4.0.4 on my HTC One X, I was very happy that the phone was connecting to each computer as external USB storage.
Lately the phone received the JB update, which made the OS 4.1.1
Since then, when I connect the phone to Mac it requires Android File Transfer, which is simply POS from my point of view; totally impractical.
And when I connect the phone to Windows, it behaves like a camera but like Android File Transfer window, quite useless and file types are not being recognized properly, icons look different then what they actually are, etc...
What happened to the phone, anyone knows?
Android upgrade changes the previous nice connection type, I guess...
But is there any chance to go back to that type of connection while running JB?
Cheers.

I was hoping to read answers about a tool requiring root access or a tweak kind of way to change it...
Anyway, I'll see what Airdriod is as you've recommended.
you can still use your phone as mass storage. you just need to update your htc sync manager and enable usb debugging in your phone.

Thanks. May I ask for more details?
I'd of course try what you suggest before asking you back if I had the chance however, I'm not in a position to do it right now, sorry for bothering...
Am I correct to assume that the solution you're suggesting is affecting only the workstation on which there is HTC Sync Mgr is possibly installed?
I mean, is this going to change the behavior of the phone permanently or is it going to solve the issue between the phone and the particular computer?
I'm using the phone as external storage to transfer files between computers, on which I'm not workstation administrator, therefore I have no chance to install HTC apps on the computers I'm referring to.
Damn, Android is getting easier and better but how about this?
Do you happen to know the reason for Google to change this?

I think you should blame htc not google because on non sense rom storage have not changed.
and it's my problem too. mass storage on sense jb rom would be very better.

Nexus 7 wont connect to computer via MTP

When I connect my Nexus 7 to my windows 7 computer it is not recognized in MTP, but is when I change it to PTP. When I connect my 1st gen Nexus 7 to the same computer it is recognized fine and I am able to transfer files. I have all the drivers installed and adb works when I am in PTP I just cant transfer any files. Has anyone else experienced this problem or is there maybe something wrong with my Nexus?
Check out this thread. I was experiencing similar issues although I didn't test out PTP .

Disregard. I figured it out. It was a driver issue after all.
How did you fix it? I have the same problem. Is root needed to view transfer files via USB?
My N7 2013 won't connect with my Macbook Pro. I already have the Android File Transfer app, which works fine with my Nexus 4, but it won't recognize the Nexus 7 2013. It charges, but no connection. Anyone have any ideas?

Root is not needed to transfer files via USB. I just uninstalled the previous driver and updated to the latest and that worked for me.
No matter what, I always keep getting error code 10, device cannot be started when I install the new nexus 7 drivers Android ADB device (from the previous posts- Nexus 7 root). I'm not even trying to root, just trying to install drivers correctly.

It is definitely a driver issue. I had to uninstall my drivers and then manually install others, because I had a Nexus 7 2012. Those drivers were showing up as *up to date* according to windows, but the device was not working. Total clean install worked to correct it.

In device manager, go to the properties of each android device. I had one near the top of the list and one lower under portable devices. Click update driver and navigate to your updated drivers folder.
It should update them. The device listed under portable devices had mtp as part of the title so I figured that one was the problem.

To anybody who comes to this thread looking for help.
Go to device manager, and under devices remove the Google ADB Driver. This drove me nuts. All of my nexus devices wouldn't connect because they lacked an external SD.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
I've tried every suggestion in all of these threads so far & nothing worked. Even after I deleted the ADB drivers, windows 7 would automatically reinstall them. When I tried to update the drivers, win7 said they already had the best drivers (ADB).
Here's what worked for me:
I had to turn off USB debugging, delete the ADB drivers in Device Manager, then reboot the device while it's still plugged in. Windows recognized the device as an MTP device & installed the drivers before it even fully booted.
i installed the drivers from the link in this thread and still no luck, i am running the latest paranoid android rom, and tried it on 8 different computers with 23 different cables and no luck - would it help if i flashed a stock rom ? otherwise i dont know what to do - any help would be appreciated, thanks, chris
edit flashed a stock rom and now it is working again - came right up on my pc, i am selling it today to buy the 32gb and just wanted to get me twrp backups off it

After helping someone with Paranoid ROM, I think the problem you are experiencing may be on the ROM/kernel side. Part of the problem is the custom ROM was sending out different USB IDs from stock. I was able to help them force the recognition of the MTP device from a driver standpoint on windows, but the MTP device wouldn't start up when windows tried to initialize it.

I switched kernels to stock to jassy to tiny. None of them work so it has to be the ROM. I am just going to use WiFi transfer of files. Nothing major right now while everything is still new to 4.3.

Windows 8 is problematic for some Android users(I hate Windows 8), is your phone a new one or old? My work laptop has Windows 8, you know I've never even tried to connect my S3 to it. I will give it a try tommorrow to see if I get the same results.

well i got my phone like a year ago and i totally agree with you windows 8 sucks. I think its my computer that doing that but im not to sure.In any case thanks for replying and helping me :victory: im going to test this on my sisters computer later and tell if it works.
I remember reading somewhere that Samsung KIES may conflict with Windows 8. I cannot remember where I read it though.
I have had luck with trying a new cable and/or switching usb ports. My desktop used to run windows 7 but now runs 8. I've never been able to use the usb ports in the front for transferring data with gs3 but the usb in the back works fine. I have also had to switch cables to get it working. Since you already have the proper drivers installed just try a new cable in a usb port in the back of your pc, that should do the trick. I hope that helps.
