Hi everyone,
I rooted my brother's HTC Desire Z from Bell by following these guides (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/HTC_Desire_Z:_Firmware_Downgrade_(Gingerbread), http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_vision). I rooted it for the sole purpose of being able to sim unlock and everything worked fine.
Now my only problem is, I don't know how to update from Froyo 2.2 to Gingerbread 2.3. I tried searching for software updates from the phone settings, but nothing turned up. I want to update it because some apps won't run on 2.2 and I don't want to use a custom rom because my brother will just get confused from the new ui and ask me a bazillion questions.
Also, the rom I am using right now is the stock rom of htc dz, but from a different country (I forgot to backup the original). Can anyone provide me the stock rom (rooted?) for HTC Desire Z from Bell (Canada). I don't think factory resetting it or hard resetting it will help cause the rom will remain the same.
One last question, if I unroot the phone and everything, will the phone remain sim unlocked?
Sorry for being a noob and thanks in advance.
Bump.

So you downgraded to 2.2 did you then use gfree to exploit and root?
Boot to bootloader and write everything from that screen down here
How exactly do I boot to bootloader? Is it Power + Volume Down? If it is, doing so only gets me to a screen searching for an image with the only choice being to update or not.

Take the sdcard out of your phone and try again

Hello Guys,
I am an android nOob who is really stuck I have read so many different forums I am still not sure what step I am missing out, if you have the time could someone give me a step by step guide please. I have a 3UK desire software No 1.22.771.1. this is branded and locked to three. I have made the gold card and also rooted using unrevoked but instead of using clockworkmod I have used recovery-RA-desire-v1.7.0.1-R5.img, rooting has worked as I have superuser permissions this is where I am now stuck what is the next move I have tried using gernic HTC RUU to de-brand so the software version is 1.21 instead of 1.22 but this always fails stating wrong RUU I have hit the wall boys I dont know what the next step is I would like to use Leedroid's ROM on my desire.
Any help please I would be very grateful.
I think you can just flash a custom firmware. Won't the RUU updates remove root access etc?
Phil
Don't know Phil this is where I am stuck I don't know what the next step is!!

I am now running 2.2 I was making it much harder then what it was!!
So long as you are routed I would download Rom manager from market and then use that to download a Rom and flash with a full wipe, so simple real it is
Good luck
Oh check out miui Rom if you real want to be impressed

Hi there, I've got the exact same software version, 1.22.771.1, have already rooted using unrevoked, if I just load a custom rom now is it likely to work? My desire is 3 branded but I've unlocked it and am using a Vodafone SIM.
Thanks,
Paul
I have a rooted Desire that was originally on Virgin UK, it had the boot screen and some Virgin apps but wasn't locked to any network. The problem is I never backed up my original rom and after being on a rooted phone now for ages I want to return it to a standard 2.2 stock unbranded rom but because im new to all this, I have no idea how its done or where to get the rom from. I asked this question on Modaco and someone gave me a link to what was meant to be a stock UK rom but when I extracted it it was a HTC app which I had no idea what to do with when I ran it it looked for my phone but I was to scared to plug it in incase it bricked my phone, I was expecting a rom that was installed from my SD card. Was I suppose to plug in my phone and allow this HTC app to return my rooted phone to stock? if not what do I do to return it to a unbranded 2.2 and where do I get the rom/app from.
Cheers
You need to find the RUU from Virgin but I'm not sure the new ones have been leaked

Sup guys. I need help with rooting my HTC Desire HD, i want to use Unrevoken but i have a problem: in the compitable list it says htc desire not htc desire hd, does the hdh also counts as a desire? Thx guys and sorry for my bad english

Hi xOMG. I am not sure about Unrevoken, but as far as I know, the Desire HD actually can be rooted using VISIONary+ app.
The app has been removed in the Market. But you can go to this site and download the apk file for installation. http://android.modaco.com/content/software/320350/19-nov-r14-visionary-one-click-root/
You may consider downloading any file explorer from the market so that you can install the apk file. Read the steps carefully before you use VISIONary+. Do it at your own risks. Lol.
EDIT: Oh by the way, your English is not bad and its perfectly understandable. Really.
Cheers. =)
I tried V+ but it "Crashes" after the black screen, had to wait more then a minute, is that okay? Should i try it again?

I am at version number 1.8....
I need to downgrade to root. I was always of the understanding that my device was already rooted I have s-off and i just checked in bootloader.
I just want to know what is the best way to back up my data before hand?
So once i am rooted i can put it straight back on?
Yes. You have to have build number below 1.72xxxxxx in order you to use VISIONary+ to root your device. Else the rooting process will not work. I have my build number 1.32xxxxxx when I first bought my Desire HD. So it means I do not need to do any downgrading.
Pauly_k, in the first place, what are you planning to back-up? The stock ROM? If you are planning to switch to other ROMs, the app ROM Manager from the market, can be used as a tool to switch ROMs and also back-up ROMs. If apps and everything I would recommend Titanum Back-Up app.
When you do a Radio S-OFF and/or ENG S-OFF exercise, you do not need to on and off it back everytime. You can just leave it OFF all the time. It will not affect your device in everything e.g. performance. OFFing it allow you to gain full access into other area in your device such as to flash new radios.
Unless you wish you send back your device to HTC for say, warranty purpose, then yes of course you have to ON it back. Lol.
Cheers.
Hi all
I am trying to debrand my T-mobile desire. I have rooted my phone and removed the security lock. I have also created a gold card and inserted it into the phone.
However when i run the stock HTC RUU it reboots the phone into the boot loader and then gives me an error saying it cant update the rom.
This is now deiving me crazy. As i am a complete noob at flashing android phones.
Any help will greatly appreciated. As i feel it is something i am doing wrong.
Thanks
Jonathan
If you have rooted your phone you don't really need the gold card, as that was a method used to debrand a phone without having to root.
Which method did you use to root your phone?

Not entirely true. I rooted my Desire first then used an ruu but I have to use a goldcard to do it.
To be honest, you don't really need to debrand your phone. Just whack a rom on it.

Yeah I know I can put another Rom on . But at the moment I just want to try the stock HTC Rom.
Make sure you use a pre rooted rom otherwise you could find yourself losing root, could be a bit of a problem too with htc locking down thier phones.
I am not too bothered if it does remove root.
I assume it can be re rooted .
I know there were reported problems over on the android forums from some people losing root & not being able to root again.
Not sure if that was sorted out, could be a good idea to ask around some more to be certain.
You sure the ruu is a complete dl? Have to download multiple times off shipped roms, first few tries are always partials.

Still I am fine with that just need to get the T-Mobile sh*t.off the the phone. As they think it exceptable not to realise Rom updates . When HTC clearly think it is needed.

That's a useless site now. There is an ruu thread, go in there and click the link to the latest wwe ruu. Scroll through till you get a multiupload link, download that.

I download the rom the ruu thread. I will try re downloading it.
am I right in thinking that I should be downloading the WWE Rom for the UK?
I'm due my upgrade in a few days and am selling my beloved desire to one of those mobile flashback sites and wanted to know if I should unroot it as I have s-off and rcmix Rom installed. On these site they only really state that itmys full switch on.
What's your thoughts?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I'd unroot it personally
And probably load Froyo on it too
@Eddy: Sold your Desire, have you?
If I was you I'd unroot it. Leaving on a custom ROM just means there's something for the cashback website to moan about (and possibly not accept).
Unroot. It's not like it takes long to do it.
thanks folks.
issue i have is that my desire is a branded t-mobile uk device and i rooted using unrevoked and every time i have tried to create a goldcard it hasn't worked.
is there any other way to unroot branded devices?

Search for the threads on Goldcard. See my thread on "How to unbrick the Desire". It has a good Goldcard FAQ
Just got confirmation from fonebank. They accepted the phone even though it had root and s-off
