Random freezes - Paranoid Android Q&A

There's a way to track what's making a random boot?
Since last 4~5 PA versions, i had a lot of random reboot on my Nexus 4

First step is to perform a clean install and do not install any custom kernels

DHD won't stop rebooting and force closing apps after lock screen! Help please

My phone is rooted and I have had many custom roms on my phone. I decided to flash Virtuous Unity rom today, did a full wipe first, flashed and did a reboot and now once I get past the lockscreen a bunch of system force closes come up and after about 30 seconds it reboots again! Is my phone bricked? I have managed to get into recovery mode a couple times and even tried flashing other, previous roms that I have worked before and the same thing happens! I honestly don't know what to do can anybody help?!

try wipe and flash the rom again.
Go into recovery mode and choose advanced, then Wipe Dalvik Cache; go back and choose factory reset, after this flash Full Wipe 1.5 ext 4 and i recommend to flash CoreDroid Rom, to have a running system, otherwise ARHD Rom; after this i think you will have success. I had a similar experience with another rom and this helped me.
Yes as Neo XL said you need to wipe everything and then install a fresh ROM. Sometimes things just get a bit buggy for no apparent reason and all it needs is a wipe.
Also double check the md5 matches, many problems are caused by corrupted downloads
I finally got it back to normal. it was very frustrating trying to hit the power button and restart into recovery mode when force closes are literally popping up every 2 seconds. I did a full wipe/factory reset and I wiped delvik cache. I then flashed MIUI (none of my Sense ROMs would load for some reason), and used rom manager to flash the new Unity ROM, which worked. For some reason, I am having difficulty flashing ROMs directly via Clockwork (mainly sense-based ones).. but If I go through ROM manager, it usually works..
Next time donĀ“t wait, until you can hit the power button; remove short the battery and then restart by holding volume down.
You might want to try reinstalling clockwork. Dont do it via ROM Manager, get the latest proper release of CWM here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1003723&highlight=clockworkmod
Follow the instructions on how to install it but do verify the MD5 and the SHA-1 tags using a program called Exactfile.

i just tried to flash this rom today and had the same issue on inspire 4g... did a full wipe and install through clockwork and i had your problem 3 times.. first time was when i tried to use htc sense acct... second and third the rom was fine for about 10 minutes then just had all these system force closes and reboots... i was under the impression that flashing a rom though rom manager wasnt really the proper way to flash roms.. im still new to all this coming from the iphone world... i was really interested in trying out the virtuous unity rom... have you had anymore FC issues since flashing through rom manager??

[ROM][CM9] Aoikaze Alpha 3 [7-8-12] Discontinued

Ok, here's what I've been tinkering with for the last week or so, its a lightly modded CM9 base ROM. It's original intention was to be a ready to rock flash for my device, with all my apps and tweaks and whatnot already in place, so I could flash and go without having to setup all my stuff again.
This is based on that idea, minus most of the apps and whatnot.
I present Aoikaze Alpha 3!
Still a work in progress, but I felt a broader test base might be needed to find any oddities my tweaks may have caused.
Current ROM base:
Alpha 4 released 7-8-12
Updates:
Forgot to mention, this does have working rotation lock!
7-9-12: As per notsointeresting's suggestion, and a few complaints of dev-host's reliability lately, I setup androidfilehost to hold my stuff, I'll be slowly migrating everything over, then using dev-host as a mirror.
What is this based on?
This release is based on CM9 Alpha 4, I chose to rebase on this version as it should contain almost, if not all, fixes ghman, waydownsouth and the rest of those awesome devs have completed. I have not changed any of the source in favor of stability and reliability.
What does this come with?
Various build.prop tweaks, some apps such as:
Titanium Backup
Es File Manager
Epic Blue CM9 theme (thanks stetson!)
Apex launcher
All apps are the free versions, no warez here!
All extra apps are in /data/app so you can remove uninstall them without TiBu or anything else.
Init.d scripts for cleaning up the DB, permissions and cleaning the cache. They are named for what they do and sit in /system/etc/init.d for anyone who wishes to remove them.
Build.prop changes are marked for anyone wishing to remove or change them.
Did not include changes for it to be seen as an A500, it's still marked A100.
What does this NOT come with?
No paid for apps!
Does not include scripts that require script manager or any other app to run, which included the crossix mount swap and CPU Sleeper, both can not be run with init.d. Next release I may include them in /system/bin and include script manager for running them.
No extra bloat, no added sounds, wallpapers or anything else, just as it comes from CM.
Gapps not included as per CM's policy.
What else is planned for this ROM?
Currently working on a new method of calling script during sysinit that modifies the ram disk with more options for when a script will be run, right now it just runs everything at once, and can clash with anything else going on at the same time. I've tested this a few times and it still doesn't work properly, so if I get it working, this is will likely be alpha 4. It also means any init.d script can be set for anytime from early boot (literally as soon as the kernel takes over) to GUI showing up, to running before shutdown. It will allow an almost infinite ability to time when and how a script can/will be run without the need for changing the ramdisk (in the boot.img) anymore.
After that, I'm looking at theming the ROM, anyone who wants to help or even do it, please feel free to offer, I have no idea how to do this yet.

Bugs:
Dunno, please, as always, report anything odd and I'll note it here!
Thanks!
cdkg: Thanks for testing my early alpha.
gh123man, waydownsouth: For getting CM9 officially supported with CM9! Also, for answering my random questions and off the wall ideas in IRC.
randomblame: For also going along with my odd random thought processes in IRC.
da-pharoah: As always, for cheering me on and letting me bounce ideas off him on gtalk.
x0hell0x: His hellfire series inspired my wanting to try building a ROM for myself (and of course you guys).

Optional:
Blackhole Wipe and Nullifier
Please read the OPs.
ezterry's Kernel
Again, please read all of his information. Kernel is not supported on CM9, so while it may work, it may have issues. I've not done extensive testing with his kernel on Aoikaze.
Required:
Gapps
Required for Play Store and misc framework (like gmail sync etc.)

Aoikaze Alpha 3
I hope you read all that crap in the previous 2 posts before asking questions or reporting bugs
Thanks! As soon as I can get to a PC to root my tablet again, I'm definitely flashing this.

I tried this, but unless I did something wrong, I didn't see any of the things that it said it came with. I wiped everything, and flashed then flashed gapps. Still nothing.

The only things you'll see is the apps. The scripts run at boot so you won't see anything from them. Or did you mean the apps don't show up?

The apps didn't show up... no big deal though cuz I just flashed over the cm9 nightly without a wipe and all my apps and data were still there... the only bug I ran into so far is the volume buttons are still stuck in landscape mode... also, the screen rotation lock switch on the side of the tab is working as well otherwise its working good so far. Here's what I got from just flashing without wipe;

Hey there. I see you're using Dev-host. Tried downloading had issues (not only this ROM) . personally I'd like to recommend androidfilehost.com , its always maintained, never seems to slow down and with an account you get unlimited storage/bandwidth, etc.
I use it as my main file host for Android now.
I'll continue trying to download from here though. Just very slow, and keeps stopping.
I'm excited to see your modifications from cm9 anyhow

What was updated? Still runs rock solid for me never a hiccup but I'm switching between this, kuroikaze and jellybean and restoring back, so I can't say its a solid week or whatever of running. I'm flashing 20 times a day, no I'm not exaggerating. For every alpha build number posted there is probably 5-10 personal builds that no one ever sees lol. Just depends how many tries it takes to get what I'm doing right.
Also, just wipe cache dalvik and data you can leave system alone most likely.

Weather Channel and Facebook updated, I cleared dalvik and cache then fixed permissions and rebooted, still shutdown and rebooted after a couple of minutes. Though the latest reboot I didn't restart CPUsleeper and hasn't rebooted. The funny thing is that I was going to try to post a battery screenshot in the morning but this hosed that up.
Is there a log that shows what caused the reboot? I ran log at from the terminal and got a huge screen of jibberish.

You'd have to catch it when it reboots, so basically sit there logging until it happens. Not real fun, and random reboots are hard to figure out because of how...random...they are. Leave CPU Sleeper off, and see if it still doesn't reboot.
Well it was still sitting at the same page on xda when I woke up, so it must be something with CPUsleeper. Thanks, I'll keep you posted.

adb logcat > logcat.txt
that will dump it into a file instead of flooding the screen.

If it is CPU Sleeper causing it, I'll (or you can) forward it to eugene for inspection.

Galaxy S3 T-Mobile Problems. AOKP the reason?

My galaxy s3 on tmobile has been overheating, dying fast, charging slow, and randomly rebooting the past week. I'm running AOKP MR1 milestone. I'm thinking maybe AOKP is the issue, but not too sure.
What are some other stable good vanilla 4.2.2 roms I can try? thanks
Probably.
I'm running AOKP without any issue. What have you installed recently? Did you flash custom kernel, overclock cpu, change cpu voltages, etc...? Download OS Monitor app and see which processes are eating cpu and your battery. Maybe it's time to wipe everything clean: factory reset, wipe external sdcard, and reflash the ROM. An sdcard full of stuffs can cause the media scanner process to run long and eat up battery.

I wouldnt go as fsr as blaming the rom right away, especially if its a milestone. More kernel related and or user error. Give us more info to help you solve this so you can use your the way you want to.

There have been problems with the new kernel versions that have been merged into the ROMs. Take CM10.1 for example, each nightly is iffy. You never know when it's gonna be buggy or not. So far, my phone has been constantly rebooting.

That's why people use custom kernels. Not just for overclocking, but also for picking up the slack on the CM kernel.
More like kernel related but yes aokp and cm10.1 can mess up your phone at times

Yes, but even with custom kernels it can get buggy. No kernel is one-size fits all since each chip is unique. You gotta pick and choose which kernel works best for your phone.

I was having that issu as well but it was with touch wiz roms and kernels it actually ended up being a dud phone and battery. .. I have done a warranty exchange and it fixed it I also got an anker battery too and its been doing good only gets hot when I have it on charge and use it.. so it would ight not be just the rom. Try a different kernel see if its the battery getting hot and go from there. Isolation is key bud:thumbup:

This morning my phone was stuck on the AOKP boot logo and it was overheated like crazy. I did a battery pull and waited for the phone to cool down. After that I booted it back up, but the battery drained pretty fast and the phone still heated up.
I did not flash any custom kernals or anything. Just AOKP milestone 1.
Maybe I will wipe the entire phone and reflash aokp.
OR
Are there any roms that are better than AOKP and what is the best kernal to flash?
Thanks.

I've been running AOKP since 2 hours after I got my d2tmo, initially KAsp3rd's unofficial builds, and now the official "nightly" builds... I have been using a very stable build since January, but recent official developments have me flashing regularly again.
Every single build since JB 4.2.2 MR1 has been very unstable on my device, somewhat randomly rebooting quite regularly... I say "somewhat" randomly because there are a certain few actions I can perform which will cause reproducible immediate reboots on demand, including but not limited to trying to DISABLE* USB Debugging. I've noticed that the device is far more likely to reboot itself when attempting to run apps as superuser. I noticed that Koush's Superuser app/infrastructure is embedded/integrated in the ROM and when I installed the latest version from the Google Play Store, it said that my su binary was out of date, so I updated it... It didn't resolve the random reboots, but when the device did reboot next, it performed some additional setup steps, including prompting me for my first & last name which was really odd because the initial setup had, I thought, been completed, and the device had been rebooted (by itself mostly) at least a dozen times prior to this.
I suspect these issues might have something to do with the superuser integration in the ROM and I ask that you who are experiencing similar random reboots take note of any patterns such as whether it occurs more often when attempting to perform superuser privilege escalation.
Currently I'm testing whether setting "Superuser Access" to "Disabled" helps at all. I'll report my findings once a conclusion is established.
*I'm trying to disable it to troubleshoot why the device doesn't show up when I issue `./adb devices` on my PC running Ubuntu 12.10 Linux; it doesn't even show up in the list of connected USB devices when I issue a `lsusb` command which is weird. I've rolled back to my backup of the January AOKP 4.1.2 build and confirmed that the device is visible to adb, so it doesn't seem to be an issue with my hardware...
P.S. I've posted about it in the new official d2tmo AOKP Nightly thread on the RootzWiki Forum (linked above).
---------- Post added at 11:29 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:50 AM ----------
Disabling Superuser didn't seem to help at all. It has still rebooted itself twice since then.

PM me for a modified SlimBean build I use if interested. No random reboots and I have had the same issue in the past. Also, you could try wiping 3 times (cache, dalvik, factory reset and system) and then install KT747. Its the most up to date kernel as far as the patches and drivers go.

Why should any amount of crashes or random reboots be "acceptable" to anyone when there are so many
other roms in these xda forums to choose from which do not crash at all and are full of excellent features? LOL

I am looking for a rom with similar features as AOKP like virtual buttons etc, no issues.

did you try reformatting your sdcard(s), factory reset, format /system partition (via recovery), and reflash the ROM? maybe just reformat the sdcards first, and see if that helps.

I ended up flashing like a touchwiz galaxy s5 themed kitkat rom, which I have been using since September. Before that I used cyanogenmod 11. Haven't tried AOKP in a long time. When I get time I plan to flash some lolipop rom I guess.
Is there any activity on AOKP any longer, loved rom but it looks like 10/18/14 is the last build i can find.....

[Q] Reboot problem, but a little different

Okay, so I have been a flashaholic for the past couple of years and been on the AOKP nightlies for a very long time.
However, since the last month or so, every time I try to flash (clean and dirty) a new ROM or upgrade to a newer nightly, the flashing process goes on pretty smooth as expected. But, here is the thing.... after booting up fine, it starts to optimize the apps and I see it going through the entire cycle of apps. When all the apps are optimized, it says "Starting apps" and this is when I feel a vibrate and the phone reboots and does this over and over. My only way out of this is to boot it back into Recovery (TWRP 2.5) and restore my backup and sadly continue using what I had before this exercise.
I have tried various combinations of wipes, fix permissions, kernels, radios, etc. and am totally stumped here!!
Help please as it bugs me to no end when I see crazy new features the newer ROMs are dishing out and I cannot taste them
by clean what are your actual steps you mind elaborating a bit more of your steps, and with which ROM this happens on have you tried a stable as oppose to a nightly to see if it will fix your errors, as far as flashing do you ever format system in mounts and storage when you flash ROMs ???
Clean: Wipe Cache, Dalvik, Format System, Data. I haven't tried formatting the Internal SD or Preload partitions yet.
This happens with quite a few ROMs... I have tried SlimBean, CM 10.1, AOKP M2, PA so far. See the same behavior on nightlies or stables. I haven't tried Stock ROM yet... maybe should give that a try as well.
Let me know if I can give you more information to help me out.
since it seems to be happening on every ROM for you i would suggest you try going back to stock and re-root and try again, it doesn't take that long it just really sucks to do everything from scratch, but its the only way you are going to know where this problem is coming from also if you are on TWRP 6 that might be the problem everyone has been having lately it sometimes works sometimes doesn't have you tried opening ROM MANAGER and fixing permissions only from within the app...see if that squashes your bugs just trying to give some ideas ....
I would hate to go back to stock and re-root all over again. But if all else fails... I guess that remains as my only option.
I am on TWRP 2.5 for quite some time now and have successfully flashed using that numerous times before this problem started... not sure what you mean by TWRP 6 (you mean 2.6?)
I do not have ROM Manager on my phone, will give that a shot as well before resorting to the "Stock" option.
Thanks for your help!
yeah i ment 2.6 lol DOOHH!! and yeah you def sound like you know what you are doing so im sure you will figure it out just wanted to give you some ideas ... and for the record its always nice to take a break but good luck bro sorry i couldn't help you more
It was an issue with the Kernel I guess!!
Flashing SlimBean b8 + gapps followed by the UBER Kernel after wiping the hell out of everything as my last ditch effort I went past the "Starting apps" while I was feverishly holding onto the Vol UP + DN to get into recovery if it fails again.... to my surprise, it went past that screen and there was the start screen I have been looking forward to.... what drama )
I guess will follow all my flashes with the UBER kernel going forward.
awesome man!! glad you got it fixed - Like i said i knew you would figure it out good stuff man, now you got more knowledge and can help others if they run into the same issue happy flashing ! take care

A Noticeable Drop In Performance After Flashing Something In TWRP For A Second Time

Currently using Codeworx recovery but this "problem" has persisted across both this one and Bluspark's.
After setting up the phone from scratch (full wipe and format) I'll flash something in TWRP like a kernel or Magisk module and everything is fine. It's when I go to flash something else afterwards later on that the performance drop kicks in. Here's a couple videos using a screen recorder:
1st flash:
https://youtu.be/xGd6ElDuV8w
2nd flash:
https://youtu.be/4bOGkjkz1rA
Apps will open fine the first time after a reboot but every new launch after that it's slower to open and less responsive for a couple seconds.
The only fix I have found both is incredibly inconvenient and time consuming. A full wipe, format and reinstall of EVERYTHING. Obviously I've done the obligatory dalvik/cache wiped before and after any flash but nothing seems to work.
I'm getting really annoyed at how fussy this bloody phone seems to be. With my previous phones it was whatever and forget. No issues. OP5T seems to be a bit or a drama queen in comparison. You can't even do a clean flash of the Open Beta without having to format, downgrade to 4.7.6 and then install the Open Beta again
The two videos are just small examples. Performance system wide seems to be taking a hit after a flash no matter what it is.
Any help? I've had to format at least half a dozen times because of this.
