Some roms (like sling) have a very useful but useless feature, but I don't know the name! I'm looking for the name to see if I can find more information about it and how to edit it.
The thing is, when you press one of the 3 virtual keys and hold it and swipe up to the screen, this feature comes, but only showing Google now and quick memo, which can be found in other shortcuts as well, so I would like to know the name of the feature, and if there is some way of add of edit apps or shortcuts there.
Thanks in advance!
Here is a picture of the feature

Hi Guys, bit of a noob.
Coming from iPhone, I could Quick Compose an SMS from anywhere using a designated shortcut using BiteSMS. In my case, I used the Volume buttons on iphone to activate the quick compose option.
Now, I wanted to know if this could be done on Android. Handcent etc have Quick Compose but its configured when you press the search button. However, the NOTE II doesnt have a hardware search button. So does anyone know how this could be done?
Bump
you could set up a shortcut in the quick command or set up a gesture in gmd gesture/pen control.

Just checked. That's not why I'm looking for. Thanks
Swipepad.
It's free. There are paid add ons, but the free version is good enough as is. You can essentially "swipe" from a chosen hotspot somewhere around the screen and have access to whatever apps or shortcuts you put there.
There are 10 possible hotspots along the screen edges: top right/left corner, bottom right/left corner, top, bottom, upper right/left, lower right/left.
The paid add ons include a keypad, widgets, or more space. No matter what app you are in, you can just swipe at the designated hotspot to access your swipepad right away. Even in games. You can adjust the size of the hotspot as well. Try choosing a hotspot reachable by your thumb.
No root necessary.
Aside from adding the quick compose option, try adding something like Aircalc (free, floating calculator) and a floating note app... you might not think you'd use it a lot, but trust me it is infinitely useful. You can use it in conjunction with Nova Launcher's shortcuts (recent apps, home, app drawer, notification drawer) for even easier one handed access as well.
Ok I've kinda found a solution.
ChopSms has the quick compose feature but in addition to using the search button as a shortcut you can also use the notification centre. So I've just gone for that. I can access the notification bar more or less from everywhere do that'll do me fine.
I'm running PAC-Man ROM and am thankful for the settings that allow me to use gestures (when the S Pen's button is held) but it's a huge pain to have to hold the button for these gestures. The button on the pen is too low on the pen for my liking when I'm trying to use it as a pointing device/extension of my hand.
A couple of ideas I have had:
-the input settings that I described earlier
-the Sidebar application. I would love it if I could access shortcuts through Sidebar that emulate the back and menu keys but unfortunately the only button that can be emulated is the home key!
-CM S Pen Add-on used in conjunction with Note Buddy. I like the idea here, but I'd like to know if there's a way to automatically activate the AOSP on-screen buttons when I detach the S-Pen, but Note Buddy doesn't seem to support any extensions.
Are there any other solutions you guys have come up with that allow me to use my Note in a practical way with ONLY the S-Pen? That means I don't want to have to take any fingers off of the pen or have to lift my other hand to press the menu and back buttons.
I use GMD SPen control & cant say enugh good things about it! It can do everything you are looking for (I think) I have it open lecture notes when I detach the pen, & simulate the home button when I attach it! But you can set up any user gestures you want!
Just bought the pro version...
Very nice application...
And it's running well on carbon 1.8..
Thank you....g

I'm not really willing to shell out $6 just yet... I'll have to do some more research!
I also found another method: use the ribbons feature built into PAC-Man ROM (not sure if it's an AOKP feature) in order to swipe out a tray from the right side of the screen that has the nav buttons in it. Still wish I could get the real navbar to display by default though!
Edit: Just remembered there's also PA Pie.
To add a navbar to ANY rom that doesnt have one..
open your buildprop (in /system)
scroll down to the bottom, and after the last line, add this line
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
save the changes, reboot the phone, and BOOM, you have a navbar..works on AOSP and TW roms..

Getting a navbar to display is not the issue. What's difficult is trying to get the navbar to display only when the pen is detached! :/

I have a tasker task to launch with the help of secure settings to hide the navigation bar when spen is attached and to show it when I de-attach the spen. Just take advantage of the expandable desktop function (and select it to only hide the nav bar when pen is inserted).
Works like a charm.

Are you referring to the "Expand desktop" option under Custom ROM Actions? That option has a red circle next to it for me, meaning that it is not supported by my ROM. :'(
Which rom are you on? Is it featured in your rom?
If so, you need to turn on expanded desktop and reboot. You might also need to make secure settings a device administrator.
For me, on SlimBean, it's a red circle at first too, but it turns green when following my steps above.
Try it out and report your progress.

The reboot worked! Can't believe I hadn't thought of that. xP
Forgive me if this is obvious. I'm coming from CM 10.1 and the LG interface is a huge turn off. I would expect the icon with three horizontal lines next to the home soft key to bring up the app switcher but it doesn't. Can I get that functionality on the G Pad? TIA.
Ron
I would like this to know the answer to this too. Is there any way to enable the default Jelly Bean launcher?
I figured it out after googling. You press and hold the home soft key.
Cm can't come fast enough on this tablet

Long press on home key is the default way to bring up the app switcher. You can install GMD Auto Hide app, you can set it up to give you a dedicated key to bring up the app switcher.

I hope it doesn't become inconveniently obvious that when I ask questions about using LG's interface that I am completely inexperienced with android phones. What I know comes from my satisfying CM 10.1 experience on two Nook tablets.
So anything that is familiar from the LG phone world (makes sense they'd do that) I won't know.
Two other things I'd like to do.
Eliminate the screaming half screen notification pull down for something "normal."
Change the background on the settings app to black rather than white.
Thanks,
Ron
you can use 3finger left slide to" minimize" an app and then recall sliding to the right too

You can change the soft buttons with Xposed Mod.

I expected different behaviour, too
Has also much more abilities than just changing the navigation bar.
Nice workaround for some things, until custom roms (hopefully) arrive ;D
Ok so im trying to do something with mi launcher it might require apk deconpile im not sure but i want to re assign a key function.
theres something called one key clear (aka the task manager/switcher) just like in miui when you long press the home button. well this feature can also be usable one GB roms thanks to Mi launcher but the only thing is that you only can apply this action to the swipe down on home screen. i want to disable the built in GB task switcher and assign the mi launcher one click clear to the home button long click.
also as a bonus i would like to enable blur on this launcher like when opening folders.
I just got my hands on the device and I love it. One problem I am finding is that I can not remove a widget from the Shelf. Is there any way to delete widgets from the shelf?
Google first before posting here.
Long press the widget and swipe it away to the side.
I've tried that, swiping right doesn't work for me.
Bump.
This is a real issue, at least affecting google apps. Any advice would be appreciated.
Long press and then swipe.
Get another launcher.

Long press and swipe right is the method but...the trick is to swipe before the gray frame appears.
So:
1) long press andd keep pressed
2) swipe right just aftyer one sec.
Thanks! Everyone says swipe but the trick is waiting only one second before gray frame appears. Thank you for pointing that out..
Note: if you want to disable Shelf (like me). Just long Press on homescreen, you will see three buttons (Background, Widgets and Edit), select Edit and disable Shelf. Don't forget to Save settings by clicking on right top corner...
