[Q] Hard Drive with OTG cable? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Has anyone here got the USB OTG cable working with an external Hardrive? is yes can you say what kind of Drive... i got a 1tera i think is ADATA

Most external hard drives draw to much power for a external disk i think. I've used several thumb drives, but not hard drives. An external ssd would be you're best bet as there aren't power sucking mechanical parts in them.

I did on my note 2 prior to selinux since then (kitkat+) (Haven't on my note 3 because I frequently use screen mirroring which won't work with modded kernel) if you don't use screen mirroring then you'll need a kernel that has selinux set to permissive mode (Jovvy has a stock kernel modified with permissive mode posted in original development thread) to be able to use 3rd party ntfs apps to be able to view files, unless your hdd is fat32 (which will read as long as adequate power is supplied) NTFS requires permissive mode.
**I used a 1 tb Seagate that uses wall-power
I also have a Western Digital "My Passport Ultra" that is usb powered that powers up fine when connected to my note 3 but since my selinux is enforced I can't read the files, but it would work with a modified kernel no problem

Yup, screen mirroring will only work with stock kernel.

I'm using leanKernel and sidesync works fine. Stock rom, though.

Is It Possible To Use USB Devices with the Kindle Fire?

I got a little micro usb to usb adapter for a buck and I've tried connected a few flash drives and a keyboard to it but nothing seems to happen.
Is there anyway to get usb devices to work with the kindle or no?

Yes, there are certain USB devices that work great with the Kindle Fire. First thing is, the device must be rooted and running a custom ROM. A recent JB ROM will do just nicely and CM7 on the Kindle DOES NOT SUPPORT OTG.
I successfully use a Logitech k120 keyboard without any problems. Usually as soon as I plug it in, the Kindle will recognize it and then it's useable. The keyboard DOES NOT require a powered USB hub. I also can use a USB optical mouse but a powered USB hub IS REQUIRED for that as the Kindle does not have enough power output from its micro-USB port.
I haven't really tried to mount a flash drive yet but some do require a powered hub and others do not.
Are you using an actual OTG adapter? I bought one off an online auction site for $2 and it was labeled for "Samsung" devices but that doesn't matter.
Thanks for your reply.
This is the adapter I bought:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005QX7KYU/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Did I get the wrong one?
Is there a notification to let you know it recognized a device? Anything in the settings I have to change?

That's the same one I bought. On the 4.2.2 ROM I run, as soon as I plug in the keyboard to the adapter some notification DOES come up but I can't remember what it says lol. If I try to plug in the USB optical mouse WITHOUT a powered hub, the mouse lights up indeed but that's all it does. It does not function other than lighting up.
I'm currently typing this on CM7 as my Kindle is set up to dual boot. Some keyboards are not compatible at all, I couldn't tell you which ones exactely but I remember seeing that stated somewhere down the line.
In reference to the Settings, there is nothing I had to change keyboard wise to get it to function. There are simple options for the mouse cursor like speed. The flash drive is a different story and many people have had to use apps like Stickmount and such to get them to work. Unfortunately flash drives are hit or miss and a couple different approaches have been used to mount them.
Hope that helps

ion dk20 dock vs jelly bean

I was wondering if any of you have the same problem as me.
Just bought the dk20 ion dock and pluged my ion jelly bean to it and:
- first nothing happens wen pluging it in, if mouse and power cord connected it charges and cursor appears.
- doesnt autodetect dock
- hdmi (for me most important) does not work..
- pendrives and/or flashdrives are detected ok
so the dock is as for now a nice charger and that is about it!
let me know if any of you are having the same issues, and lets see if wll together we can do something about it.
I have had zero issues with mine. USB capability seems to be hit and miss. My cheap mouse and old Logitech keyboard work fine. I could not get a Logitech k400 to work though. As for getting hdmi to work make sure the cord is plugged in and tv on. Device screen should be off while plugging it in. Once in turn on, unlock, and it should show up. Then you can pull the notifications down and hit tv launcher. You can also set it with smart connect to auto launch.

Are you using Jelly Bean on your Ion as me?
I have followed your steps and nothing, pluged the HDMI cable into the dock and turned the TV on with the HDMI 1 channel on, with phone screen off connected it (with only the HDMI cable plugged in) and nothing happens. If I use Smart Connect App, when choosing dock it does detect the dock, but the TV mode does absolutely nothing.
Im beggining to think it could be the HDMI port on my Dock that doesn't work properly, I did buy it on ebay.. so you never know!
Let me know what you think, the whole idea was using my Ion as an additional basic PC, but without hdmi it's not going to be to useful..
Yes I am running the Rogers jelly Bean. It is very easy to disturb the hdmi connection when you mess with the dock. I am using a hdmi to micro hdmi adapter. I plug my phone in then hit the power button and unlock it. It then recognizes and shows on the tv. If you pull down the notifications you have options for tv launcher and also hdmi settings.
One thing you can try is connect the hdmi to your device directly and see if it works.

I think it's the HDMI port on my dock then, because it just doesn't even notice the HDMI connection, I'm using the cable that came with the phone, I have a factory unlocked lt28h Ion that came with all the extras, hdmi micro to hdmi cable and smart tags..
I may try doing a downgrade to see if it works ok on the ICS, I have read it had less problems with that version of Android.
Once again thanks ever so much for your help and interested, ill keep the post updated just in case other people are having the same problem as me.
Pd: The HDMI port on my device works fine directly to TV, the only thing is I have to adjust the screen dimensions to 95% now I'm on Jelly Bean so the picture is ok on the TV.
Regards, judgefargo
Finally the new Dock arrived yesterday and guess what.. It works like a charm!!!
So in the end the problem was a faulty HDMI port, the seller was kind enough to send a new one for free.
Thank you all for your help, as compensation ill leave a few discoveries I have made so you can use your ion as a spare PC.
For ROOTED devices i strongly recommend Screen Standby App, that lets you turn the screen of whilst the phone is docket and uses 1/3 of the battery, as well as not bothering you whilst watching a film or other tasks.. it has many other functions to.
Another great app is Paragon, which lets you connect external usb and hard drives in any format, specially NTFS, please note that for usb and hard drives to work the power cord has to be connected, due to the drain of power, as device warns.
That's it for now, hope this info is useful for other Dock owners and users!
Awesome I will try this out. Glad you got a good dock to work with. If you come up with other interesting stuff let us know.

I have not tried a drive yet but it will work. Think it has to be formatted in fat and not ntfs.

NTFS is standard format for Windows and for it to work in Android it needs to be fat32 format. Don't think there is much of a difference other than just the type of format. So you would right click your drive you want to use and format it as fat32. Then put what you want to on it and plug it into the dock. The phone should be able to see it at that point but you will need a file browser to access the drive. I will try it in a bit to confirm it works but from what I have read on the Z forum it should work fine.

Can I change the format without literally format my ext HDD?
XDAプレミアムを使 用して私のSK17iのか ら送られてきた
No. You will have to backup or move what is on the drive and do a format. Formatting wipes the drive and no way around that I know of.
The problem is Android is not programmed to read NTFS format which is a windows format.
But if you install PARAGON app it makes the OS able to read NTFS drives without having to format your hard drive to fat32.
I also have a WD 500GB Hard Drive and faced the same problem, there is other programs but paragon seems to be the one that works best.
Hope that helps, regards and good fortune!

[Q] maintain / stablize usb otg voltage

Hello,
Would like to thanks in advanced for anyone who replies with any relevant concrete info.
Since i got my tp-24g01 wireless touchpad keyboard in Japan back in 2009ish, i love it. its a 2.4ghz wireless keyboard kick ass keyboard. anyway it works flawlessly on otg with htc m8, pc, ps4 but not on n7.
I have nexus 7 flo 2013 wifi 16gb with cm12 of may 30 2015 with elementalx kernel for cm.
i cant really blame cm12 rom for being worse than stock in this case, let me explain,
out of the box stock rom and then even updating it from android v5 to 5.1 the keyboard would be recognized by the device but after a few seconds it would start to stutter and eventually i would have to plug in and back every FEW seconds. --- why me right --- i guess people like to use bluetooth and i could buy a bluetooth keyboard, however my hands are totally used to the layout and width of this keyboard, plus i like how it looks.
---- thus the reason why i changed to cm12 with elementalx kernel ---
it was worse, the rom would would not even recognize the keyboard. i pretty much downloaded all the usb otg helpers on play store, somehow i end up searching for s3c usb host drivers for android, and with that i was finally able to use the keyboard, it works better, but still it timesout.
ive read on xda that nexus sometimes requires extra electricy current for some things to work. this is where my question comes in..
is there way to stablize, regulat by force the output voltage so that it doesnt time out.
im an afficiando for all this stuff so i cant really be 100% certain,
however, i do believe its some kind fo voltage issue because ive used my m8 with the keyboard i n the same spots and it doesnt time out. when i download something it drops hard.
anyone know of solution for this
is it possible to force regulate or increase the power the nexus give to the otg?
any rom or kernel that has this fixed?
i would even appreciate key terms to search because i have burned out of ideas
Update
Been reading a lot
This device is really bad for hardware
Without using stickmount and otg power lock
Transfer speed to otg USB was 1.3mb/s and times out after 15 minutes ::: hate this device :::
With I get 4mb/s and the file transfered before 15 minutes so I don't know of would have timed out
Not to mention I had to boot it up connected to the otg
Makes Total sense that my wireless keyboard timed out
I'm still hoping for some software solution to this but I know it that will most be unlikely.
Have big expectations for the HTC version as I love that company
Final solution order y otg cable or powered hub and Bluetooth keyboard for when I travel.
MasalaMa
its me again
have some news.
Although it seems tht the nexus otg does not have the same type of support as my htc m8
the initial root cause of my problem
when i flashed elementalx kernel i selected otg usb charge, duh, it was a no brainer why the otg wouldnt mount my keyboard
however the sc3 usb host anroid drivers did help to fix this unnecessary problem
after having freshly flashed cm12 again the keyboard is recoginzed but the same problem persists as it did with stock rom. problem still there after trying to juice it up with the elementalx kernel by boosting cpu clocking and perhaps will start testing other kernels for other i/o scheduling and governors
any tips? recomendations?
i also installed OTG power lock which to some extent may have helped but im still getting the same issues. it seems that with this app helps a bit, however still insignificant.
might have to ge really technical

how do I get otg 100% of the time

on CM 12.1 and I can get SOME flashdrive to work otg, SOME of the time.
I tried stickmount and ex kernel, but it's the same (worst on ex kernel, can't even detect otg)
I tried using a powered usb hub to see if that was the issue (for some reason, the microusb port isn't giving power to the drive. is this normal?)
after several more testing, seems like there are 2 issues that is causing otg not to work all the time.
1. Power. Doesn't seem to be able to provide enough power for self powered usb devices (ie. flash drive, dac, etc..) or enough to maintain connection.
2. Microusb port. might be one of the reason why devices aren't getting enough power and/or not being detected.
I really think it's a power issue cause everything seems to run fine if I connect it to an external powered usb hub. I tried the same setup (flash drive and dac to an usb hub, no power) with my 1st gen Nexus 7 and it had zero issues.
so is there a way to raise or maintain 5v OUTPUT out the microusb port so it doesn't randomly disconnect otg devices?
I've been able to power A pretty heavy duty usb audio interface. I think I may have had that issue A couple times, but it was never A big deal for me.
I don't remember having the problem after enabling "OTG+Charging" in Elemental X kernels' aroma installer. Did you use that?
Also possibly (not likely) A Cyanogenmod issue. I haven't used that on the nexus 7 in A while though.
Wierd that flash drives don't stay on. Does it do that frequently? I've looked into "overvolting" the usb port A long time ago, it seemed to need A kernel change

Nexus 7 2013 Timur's Kernel USB Drive Issue

I've got a Nexus 7 2013 Rooted (Running 6.0.1) with V4.0 Timur's Kernel, all works fine as it should, so goes into sleep when I turn the ignition off and comes out of sleep when I switch ignition back on.
The issue I'm having is with USB Pen/Flash drives when when it goes into sleep it looks like it's disconnecting the drive, and when I comes out of sleep it mounts it again, but what this is doing is corrupting the drive. So I have to format the drive every time, I've tried 5/6 various USB Flash drives including SD Card readers, same thing. I'm using a USB OTG Y Cable (Charges Nexus Too)
Very very annoying as I have all my music stored on the USB Drive. I've tried a number of OTG cables, adapters, Hubs etc and they all do this.
I cannot believe the Nexus 7 2013 doesn't have Micro SD Card Slot built in, even now after 4 years, there are not many 7 inch tablets that rival the quality of the Nexus 7 2013. I love the screen resolution and Timur's Kernal. Never crashes or freezes, it's flawless in every other way.
Hope someone can help who's had the same issue.
Can anyone help with the above please? I’ve tried everything, each time the Nexus 7 2013 goes into sleep the usb flash drive disconnects and when it reconnects next time it wakes it’s corrupted.
Never been able to get this drives to work at all, ever.
There's a settings in PEM for automout(?) Try toggling that for giggles and test.
I've never heard of that happening and it's never happened to me. I'm using a 64gb USB 2.0 forgot what brand. I have both options checked in PEM under USB automount. There are random times where PEM stops seeing my USB drive but a quick unplug/replug fixes that. I'm also using an old version of SuperSu (2.78), but it's the version Timur recommended. I have auto update disabled for it in the play store.
Shameless bump, I am having the same problem here. The only difference here is I am using a sdcard to otg coverter thingy to connect it to a USB hub. The hub is powered separately from the tablet, the tablet has the battery delete mod done to it. I need to test this further with different USB sticks / sdcards I have, already tried to usb-otg adapters and still no go
