Hi everyone, I have a S4 Mini GT-9192 and use Carbon rom released on 20/07/2014 but I have few problems.
Bugs
GPS precision is disable by default. I take 3hrs to find how to enable it.
Even with GPS precision On, GPS doesn’t work right, Waze says that GPS is offline several times and most of times he can't lock position or position is outdated / wrong.
Camera Detected bug that occurs several times when I open configurations, a black screen with "camera detected" text appears on screen, this bugs stop after 2 days of use (after I install Cerberus via CWM).
Camera take a picture when started sometimes.
Camera app stop responding several times, it is annoying.
Several PT-BR missing translations. I can help with translation if needed.
Few errors on data ON/OFF button, show "service.|TIM" sometimes on Quick Access Ribbon.
Missing second SIM call / send button on Dialer and SMS apps. To make a call or send a text using secondary SIM I need to change it on configurations.
No way to set sounds for each SIM card individually, I found a setting to do that on Dialer app but doesn't work.
Notification Drawer with opened apps has a bug with big notifications. When some apps with big notification not show as first on this Drawer its window not show complete.
Example attached.

Try disabling the "Store Location" option.
Missing second SIM call / send button on Dialer and SMS apps. To make a call or send a text using secondary SIM I need to change it on configurations.
Select "Prompt" for Voice calls and Sending SMS in Multi SIM settings.
Notification Drawer with opened apps has a bug with big notifications. When some apps with big notification not show as first on this Drawer its window not show complete.
This is a feature when you have more than one notifications. To see the hidden notification, just press and drag the notification down. It will then show the full notification.

Not possible in the default launcher. Use some other launcher.

Not possible in ANY default Gallery app. They don't consider the .nomedia file. Use QuickPic instead.

BTW, I am also using the same ROM and I don't have the bug with the camera. Maybe it could be because of some other app running in the background.
Link2SD and SIM Voice Mail
Hello there,
I'm using the GT-9192 Carbon release 20140720-0828 and have two small annoyances:
Cannot setup Link2SD. The phone detects the SD card but the app always throws the error "Read-only file system" and cannot mount the ext4 partition. I've tries re-formatting the partition, switching to ext2, ext3...to no avail
I understand that this release is marked "apps2sd". I'd like to understand a bit better what this means: I found the options for moving the apps to SD card, but don't see where do they go. Are they being moved to the (hidden) partition on the SD card?
Cannot setup Voice Mail mailbox number. I tried this only for SIM1, and it does not work. The option to insert the number is there, but whenever I press OK after setting the number, nothing is stored (blank number).
And that's is, besides these minor annoyances (Link2SD may be a big one once I install big apps like maps, etc...) this is an absolutely fantastic piece of work! Great ROM - never thought a phone could be so lag-free! Quite impressive work the devs have done!

Well, altough this ROM has great performance, I guess I'll have to go back to CM11 or another one, because I can't use link2sd. Running out of disk space and cannot move any apps to the external sd card. What puzzles me is that no one else is having this issue!
Edit: this is the message I get when I try to re-create mount scripts in Link2SD:
"Failed on /system/bin/debuggerd - read-only file system"

It seem to me that is a SU issue, try install SuperSu app and see whats happens.
To use app2sd feature, you need to enable it on Settings, Apps, tap menu key and choose "Enable app moving", to move an app to ext sd, select the app that you want to move to ext sd and tap on "Move to SD card"
Remember that you'll not able to move some system or protected applications.

Indeed, installing SuperSU in recovery (I used SuperSU from this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053) fixed the permissions problem and allowed me to use Link2SD with Carbon. So, bottom line: Superuser is broken, SuperSU works fine.
Thank you very much f4k! Great work on this ROM and the kernel!

Now I have a problem with S-VOICE, I download S-VOICE S5 and install it but doesn't work. Have any trick to make it work? I don't like Goggle Now and miss S-VOICE.

MIUI for Beginners

Already flashed MIUI ROM? OK, pick up your phone now, let’s start our happy journey of MIUI ROM.
The first step: selecting apps
Various apps will greatly enrich your cell phone, so firstly let’s select the apps to your taste. Use the Android Market and download what you would like. If you are using a backup app and restoring apps from a previous ROM, only restore the apps and not the data. Otherwise that will create a lot of force close issues.
Tip: How to copy files from the computer to the phone? First connect your phone to your computer via data cable, pull down the notification panel from the top of the phone, click “USB connected”, and then click "Turn on USB storage”.
After copying, do not forget to select the option of “Turn off USB storage”, otherwise "File Manager” in the phone will not be able to find the sd card, as it is being occupied by the computer.
Now I have a lot of apps, how to put them in order?
All apps successfully installed are listed on the desktop, however, they may not be in the order you want, how to put them in order?
Long press an app icon and then you may move it freely. When it is moved to the screen border, the screen will automatically switch to the next screen.
How to add a screen? Use two fingers to pinch on the desktop to enter screen thumbnail mode. Then you may add or delete screens.
How to delete an app? Long press the app icon you want to delete, drag it on top of the trash box and click OK to delete it.
The second step: let's make your phone different.
A phone without style is nothing remarkable, so let’s make your phone different!
Changing wallpaper: Click Menu button on the desktop, select “Change Wallpaper” to replace the wallpaper. In addition to the existing wallpaper in the phone, thousands of pieces of wallpaper are also available online.
Changing theme: Themes make great changes to your interface style. Click “Theme Manager” on the desktop to select the theme you like. Also, more online themes are available online.
Selecting ringtones and more: click “Settings” on the desktop to set call and notification ringtones. In “Personalization” under “Personal” tab, you may find more options.
The third step: it’s time for some advanced techniques!
Well, you are no longer a beginner now, so let’s learn some advanced techniques.
Adding widgets on the desktop: press the Menu button on the desktop, select "Edit Mode", and then click the icon on the upper right corner to access the interface of “Add Widgets”. Choose your favorite widget on the top, and then drag it to the screen below.
Using folders to manage desktop apps: in the interface of “Add Widgets”, drag [Folder] to the desktop. You may drag multiple apps into folders to classify them. After opening the folder, you may click the edit icon in the upper left corner to rename the folder.
Using toggles panel to improve efficiency: drag the notification panel down from the top, click "Toggles" to go to the toggles panel (It goes to the toggles panel in default of notice.) On the panel are listed the most commonly used toggles, you may click to quickly enable or disable a toggle. Long press on the icon will launch the settings for that icon.
Guest mode: enable the “Guest Mode” toggle in the panel, and your calls and text messages logs will be hidden, and all installed applications cannot be removed. You may have a try when you need to show your phone to guests or children.
Importing contacts or binding accounts: you may use some apps to import a batch of contacts, or bind Google account directly in "Settings"> "Personal"> "Accounts & Sync Settings" to sync contacts at any time.
How to print screens? Press "Menu" key and "Volume Down" key at the same time to print a screen. The printed image is saved in the directory of MIUI in the SD card.
How to copy files from the computer without using the data cable? In case of a Wi-Fi connection, enter “File Manager” on the desktop, select the tab of "Remote Administration" to start the service, and then you will get an address. Enter the given address on the computer, then you may copy files without using a data cable!

Hello all,
Some of you may remember me from the early days of MIUI on the HTC Incredible. I'm back with a brand new port for the HTC Incredible 2.
In addition to downloading the rom from your browser, it's also available in ROM Manager. If you are a ROM Manager premium user you will get OTA updates as well.
The following people are responsible for helping to get this port working:
attn1 - For bringing us CM7 for the vivow
cyanogenmod - For making CM and giving us libs/kernels/configs/etc to kang
koush - For clockworkmod and ROM Manager
alpharevx - For busting the seams of this device wide open
stiffspliff, cayniarb, jamezelle, warttack and all the other MIUI.us developers for their support
And of course, all our users! Without you.. there is nothing to see here

My contacts came back fine. At least all the ones that I had synced with Google. Only issue I am having is that some apps will not work with SwipePad. But I have seen that before with MIUI on my Cappy. Not a big deal. Loving MIUI again. Really makes any android phone that I have used that much better.
Great work everyone involved!
I just flashed this rom & it came up to the bootloader but it keeps looping at the "MIUI United Worldwide" animation. Any suggestions? Anyone else experience this? It has been doing this for about 10 minutes now.
I cleared cache & did a data/factory reset before I flashed this rom.
So I successfully rooted my phone, but I usually only root so that I can remove bloatware, use it as a hotspot, etc and seldom mess with custom ROMS.
I would like to like TouchWiz, but right now it is killing me. Some issues I am having; hopefully someone can help me out here:
-I cannot get my external SD card to show in ES file Explorer
-I cannot figure out how to have different notification sounds for different apps (text messages, Gmail, calendar, etc)
-The stock text message app is pulling contacts as everyone who I have ever emailed from my Gmail account, despite them not actually being a contact on the phone, and I see no way to modify this list.
-Is there not a way to have some of my accounts (Google) automatically synch and some accounts (Facebook) turned off? I had this option with HTC and could even specify when they would Synch. It seems TouchWiz just gives one master synch option for all of your accounts.
-I am still getting facebook update notifications even though I have all syncing turned off.
- If I use a different launcher, I lose most of the TouchWiz widgets. Is that supposed to happen?
I know a lot of questions, but this UI is absolutely ruining the experience of having this beast of a phone.
Look in the settings within each app in question.

In Es File Explorer, tap back or tap the "Up" icon on the tool bar, that'll take you to the main partition of the phone. From there tap "mnt" and then tap "extSdCard" and you'll have your external SD. The other option is to use the Samsung native app "My Files" in the app drawer. It's pretty good and it's copy/cut/paste between internal and external is pretty fast.

You have to set these individual in each app, in Calendar go to settings and scroll down to Event Notification, tap Select Ringtone and set it. In Messaging and others goes the same. There some apps that'll use the default notification and cannot be changed natively but I'm sure there is an app in the Play Store that'll let you customize, haven't had a real need for it...

This is normal and also wotks this way on HTC. It's because you've sent those emails with Gmail and it automatically stores them as new contacts, if you have contact sync on in the phone it'll bring those contacts as new ones. The easy way to clean up the list is to log into Gmail from the PC and go to contacts, click on Gmail (right below Google logo) and select contacts. You can merge or massivly delete contacts or move them a new folder within contacts. And if you want to stop Gmail from creating a contact, on the web based Gmail go to settings and scroll down to 'Create contacts for auto-complete" and select "I'll create contacts myself" Then resync the phone to clean them up... I'm not sure, need to test it out, but I think you can edit your contacts with Airdroid, not sure if you knew about this app, it's very handy. I need to this too, alot of clutter and old contacts that I need to delete.

Yup, go to settings>account & sync and tap the account you want to modify uncheck the synce option you don't want for each service. Also, Facebook has native notification settings that you can change.

Try the above and it should fix it. If not, go to the app in Application Manager within setting and clear cache and force close the app. Reboot into recovery and clear cache and dalvik and fix permisions then reboot the phone.

This also happens with HTC Sense, all Sense widgets are lost when using a third party launcher. This is because they are confingured to work with their respective proprietary launcher (. There are many third party widget in the market that you use as well as launchers, Nova Launcher is a winner and you can use APW widgets along with beutiful widget or glass widgets for that HTC feel. I for one prefer TW, it's cleaner and user friendly.
Hope this helps and clears things out. If you need further help, feel free to PM me.

I believe this is a setting within Gmail. Login to your gmail account, click the Gear at the right, select Settings and find:
Create contacts for auto-complete:
When I send a message to a new person, add them to Other Contacts so that I can auto-complete to them next time
Make sure this is not selected and instead put "I will add contacts myself". You might have to delete the existing contacts in "Other Contacts".

Check in the Facebook app first to disable/configure the synching. I haven't used TouchWiz much on my SGSIII, but there used to be something under the main Settings > Accounts & Sync and it would list all of the accounts for you to just uncheck a box to disable a specific account.
This goes for your Facebook notifications coming through even though you have synching off.

My guess would be yes this is supposed to happen. A lot of those widgets depend on TouchWiz running.
Perhaps you should check out the Android Development section and look at a few of the ROMs based on stock TouchWiz. Some of them are really nice and don't look much different than stock, except they run a lot faster .
Hope this helps, good luck!
Edit: beat to the punch on everything by dragon_rckr good job!
I very much appreciate the detailed response, thank you.
The only thing that I am still drawing a blank at is the ES File Explorer. I supposed I could just use another app, but I really liked this one on my previous phone.
It appears that I do not have an "MNT" folder. I thought maybe if I unmounted and re-mounted the card, it would appear, but no luck.
I know I am in the main partition of the phone as that is where I copied the Clock Work mod Recovery to, which I can see, and then of course, if I press "up", it indicates doing so again will exit (already at root of phone directory).
Ahhh,
I had to go in and manually change my home directory to " / ".
Interesting.

LOL I was replying and wanted to check who have posted the pic to reference them and saw this ^...
Good!
Guess you got everything worked out. Now I recommend flashing TWRP instead of CWM, CWM has issues reading from the extSdCard and TWRP is fully functional and more polished. Install GooManager from the Play Store, open and grant SU persmisions. Once in the app tap menu>Install OpenRecoveryScript and it'll install it for you.
Have you considered a custom ROM, if so I recommend FreeGS3. It's one of the most stable and has really good battery life along with awesome support from the group of people that use it. Also, the bloatware was removed and it's set up as an optional install when you're flashing the ROM.
Forgot to mention that this should've gone in the Q&A section. Mods might move it, just a heads up

Wierd, I just double checked and my home directory is "/sdcard/"... wonder why you had to change it :/
What file it is supposed to use cuz stock icons aren't too many? I've tried to use png file 48x48 but settings process hangs and nothing is changed

I don't understand what you mean. You can choose icons of your own from images on your sdcard.
I've never had it crash on me before, but as I've stated in my OP, if things are crashing get a logcat.

It brings pop with message "unfortunately settings has stopped" i can't take screenshot, cuz the popup is like always on top (yes, over the menu opened from long power button)

I have no idea under what circumstances Settings is crashing; you haven't specified. You also didn't provide a logcat, so I can't help you. You need to lay out precise steps in here so I can recreate the issue. If it's happening when you use a specific image from the gallery, link that image.
What application are you using to select the picture from SD card?
It works for me with stock gallery app, but it is not working with Total commander.
I can select the image file in Total commander but the icon doesn’t change. No crash and only one line in logcat:
Code:
10-21 14:35:46.060: D/skia(20930): --- SkImageDecoder::Factory returned null
I am using Apex launcher and I can change icons on my homescreen the same way. Except I can use Total commander (or other file manager) to select pictures and it works.
The apk was taken straight from the Nexus 5, and has the search feature actually working! (confirmed)

FAQ from the website
I installed the app but the icon doesn't show up in my app tray. What can I do?
If this happens on your phone, the only solution we found was to use Nova Launcher because it has a feature that allows you to run a specific activity within an app. To set this up:
Within Nova Launcher, long-press on the home screen.Choose "Shortcuts"Select "Activities"Find "Google Dialer" in the list, then tap to open it up, and select "Phone" (use the first one in the list)
This will put a shortcut to the dialer on your home screen. At this stage, you can use this to access Google Dialer. It's not the cleanest solution, but it does work.
Can I disable my default dialer?
The short answer is no. As a general rule, you will need to keep your present dialer enabled in order to receive calls. The long answer is that on some phones you might be able to disable your stock dialer, but on others you definitely cannot. Feel free to try it on your own device and let us know what your results are.
(I disabled the first phone apk of the 2 that show up (flashing adds another one and I had it A-Z order))
EDIT: After disabling the APK, when I select "Call" the phone doesn't show any call screen whatsoever, and still has a call going, (mic works, and you can call, but the only way you can hang up is to leave the app and click the extended notification)
Again, this is all them!
Late to the party and just got a Mate 20x! Am currently running EMUI 9.0.0.208 in case there's still stability problems with 9.1.
Just about everything is working except numeric notifications of unread Gmail messages on the homescreen Gmail icon badge. Gmail doesn't appear in settings->notifications->app icon badges or settings->notifications (badge management). I've tried to make sure everything relevant was enabled in settings->apps->apps->gmail->notifications management and in the Gmail app itself.
Gmail emails are being pushed to the phone, and notifications appear immediately on the lock screen and the top notifications bar so the problem just seems to be displaying the unread emails count on the Gmail icon badge.
I understand that the Gmail icon badge displaying numeric notifications is not supported by EMUI but Nova Launcher (non-Prime) and MIcrosoft Launcher didn't seem to make any difference to the Gmail icon badge unless I've missed a setup option.
Can I have some feedback on what launchers are able to enable (unread emails) numeric notifications on the Gmail badge in a Mate 20x?
Many thanks!
John
Hi John,
From what I've read, there are 2 Methods:
1. Method 1: Stock Launcher
- Pinch on the home screen to edit > tap settings > Badge app icons > Badge display mode > Unread messages. (Source)
2. Method 2: Nova Launcher/3rd Party App
- Instal Nova Launcher or Notifyer app (Source)

Thanks! But I've already set the Badge display mode to Unread messages (unfortunately Gmail is not listed underneath among the supported apps).
Have also tried Nova Launcher (non-Prime) and Microsoft Launcher. Can you confirm these actually enabled numeric notifications on the Gmail icon badge on a Mate 20x? Perhaps I missed a setting ...

Thanks!!! Notifyer looks great but recent reviews on the Play Store don't inspire confidence ...
Guess Notifyer will need gmail credentials of all my accounts, or can it work on the system level on the phone to read the notification count? Would rather not give yet another app my gmail credentials.

Thanks! Think Tesla Unread isn't available on the Play Store anymore, not sure whether the apk on Tesla Coil apps' website is compatible with the latest Nova Launcher (Prime) ...?

Unfortunately I've removed Gmail app and instead using Outlook for Android. The Native Nova Unread Badge is working well for the app under this setting.

According to Source 1 & Source 2, TeslaUnread required permissions which violated the terms of Google Play Store, that's why it was removed. Google also required third party launchers to have their own unread badges and that's why Nova included one in their later builds.
You can still download the Tesla Unread apk from the official site here.
I bought and installed Nova Launcher Price but unread counts didn't appear for Gmail. I thought the new version of Nova Prime didn't need Tesla Unread ...
When I installed and setup Tesla Unread from your linked apk, finally, after this long odyssey, I saw unread email counts on Gmail! Many thanks for all your help!!!
Still worried that Gmail notifications don't appear as fast on the Mate 20x as an old Samsung S7 I'm comparing it against, but shall keep testing.
I made sure Gmail has full (manual) permissions under settings->battery-> battery usage->gmail->app launch on the Mate 20x. Hope Gmail has continuous access to wifi or mobile data even when the phone is sleeping. Not sure whether I've missed a setting for this as couldn't find anything under settings->wireless & networks->wifi (settings)
Immediate push gmail notifications when a phone is sleeping, unread emails count management from multiple gmail accounts and a big screen are the most important features in a phone for me! Hopefully the Mate 20x will (eventually) tick all the boxes!

Many thanks!!! When I setup Gmail, Nova Launcher and Nova Launcher Prime in settings->battery->app launch to 'manage manually' with everything enabled, the Mate 20x is faster getting email notifications than my old Samsung S7. Not sure whether all of this was needed but notifications were slower before when both the phones were sleeping.
Thanks for the screenshot. I don't have a "M" gmail notification in the top notifications area but a "2" (one email double counted). I noticed that emails were consistently double counted (one new email in gmail but the unread gmail iconbadge and notifications area says 2). In Nova settings -> notification badges -> Choose a style I switched from 'Numeric Dots' to 'TeslaUnread' and the double counting on the gmail icon badge stopped. The top notifications area still seems to be double counting but it's not the end of the world ...

Huawei is known for its' very aggressive battery management; That's why vs. Samsung for the same battery capacity, Huawei always wins because it puts most of its' apps to sleep if it's in the background. There are 3 settings to alter to fully keep an app alive in the background:
1. App Launch
Settings - Battery - App Launch - Manage Manually
2. Battery Optimisation
Settings - Apps - Apps - Special Access (Top Right) - Battery Optimisation - Set to "Don't Allow"
3. Lock App in Recent
Go to Recent Apps - Swipe down to Lock App (Lock Icon)

Wow! Thanks a lot! I hadn't done steps 2 and 3 for Gmail. Hopefully notifications speed will dramatically improve as it still was lagging when the Mate 20x is sleeping. Thanks again for the very detailed instructions. I'm sure many others will also benefit. Shall keep testing!

Many thanks for all your help. Think Gmail notifications are now appearing instantly on my Mate 20x.
I noticed that Nova Launcher has the highest battery usage among software apps on my Mate 20x (settings->battery->'battery usage'). Do you think I need to have Nova Launcher maxed out on the following settings or can get away with less?
1. Settings - Battery - App Launch - Manage Manually
2. Settings - Apps - Apps - Special Access (Top Right) - Battery Optimisation - Set to "Don't Allow"
Battery usage it's too much of an issue on the Mate 20x but every little optimisation helps in the long run. Thanks!

You can try to restore both to default and see how it goes. It shouldn't cause any issues as you're using the launcher constantly so the system will adjust accordingly.
