What I would like to do is send files to my GN via my wireless network (movies, music files, pictures etc) and also stream files directly (i.e .mkv 720p video files). Would be very happy if you could point me in the right direction!

I'm not so sure about streaming, but for transfer, Dropbox may help.

Problem with that is, I first have to upload to the Dropbox servers and then download from the phone. What I want is a faster method since my upload speeds are very slow. I am thinking along the lines of a ftp server perhaps, but not sure if that is the best option?

FTP seems that you would go through too much trouble setting it up just for that. I see your point about upload speeds though, and you are correct. I can't say I know of any other solution .
there's an app I use. its called wifi file explorer. you can use it to transfer files from your PC to the phone over wifi
If you are just looking to stream videos, look into mirage beta in the market, and use it in conjunction with a windows app called "air video server" it works great together, and it will even transcode subtitles, and transcode on the fly high res video down to something more compatible for streaming with. This setup is especially nice because you can stream your entire video collection at will to your phone, and not use up any space on the phone at all, (provided you have network)
For normal files, wifi explorer or dropbox work fine. If you want, you can even run a FTP server on your android device and connect into it from your computer using the IP address of your phone.
I use Plex - not only transcodes but the grabs box art, descriptions etc. and has a very slick interface. Might be overkill for your needs though...
Wifi file explorer is really nice for just getting general files to the phone. There's also a DAV server available (forget the name of it) so you could then mount the phone as a drive and copy directly.

Slightly off topic but can ES access twonky servers? Would be nice to have the dice player integration and avoid the twonky app.

That doesn't seem to work on the GN. All that happens is you get a dialog that says 'Dice player has stopped' (the same file plays fine if copied to the phone).
Edit: Seems to be ICS compatibility issue..

no I mean dlna, you use it to stream video, pictures or music over wifi. For example I connect my x10 to wifi and enable dlna and activate dlna on my TV and I can then browse through my phones media contents and play them.
Was just looking through the settings on nexus and couldn't see it but also found wifi direct here's a good http://www.wi-fi.org/Wi-Fi_Direct.php its not the same as dlna, can't find it anywhere in the phone. Surely it has it?!

Don't care about not included DLNA Apps. So far my experience was that most of the DLNA Apps the manufacturer added were crap :/
But well, there is one which worked always pretty well for me. It's the app "Skifta" by Qualcomm
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.skifta.android.app
Try this in combination with a good videoplayer (Diceplayer,Vplayer,Rockplayer) and it should work pretty fine. This way I could always stream my videos from PC to my Android phone without any problems. Just share the media in windows media player or any similar software which supports DLNA.
Couldn't test skifta on ICS so far because I'm still waiting for my phone but I hope it runs as well on ICS as it was running on older Android versions.

Whoops, sorry, yeah, that's what I meant. Let me check my settings... I installed it a while ago and once it worked, I haven't touch it since.
On my HTPC Server, installed it, pointed it to whatever folders I want to share (currently only video for when I'm in bed at night and don't want to wake the wife with an episode of whatever), set the transcoding settings to use multi-cores, almost everything else on default.
On upnplay on my Nexus S... (horrible GUI btw), started up the app, the PS3 Media Server I just set up shows up automatically (it's all on the same wifi network, haven't tried it via 3G), click on it, my folder shares show up, I click on a video and it starts up via moboplayer.
I use moboplayer, tried a few others, found moboplayer to be the most stable for me while playing mkvs and any other video I throw at it.
A tip. I found (this was months ago, maybe it's better now with new versions) that mkv streaming of high res video on the Nexus S was unstable or really slow. So I used Handbrake to transcode a season of a show at time from MKV/720p to MP4/800x480. It was super simple, they have a phone profile you click on and voila. Downside? a bit more harddrive space it used, upside? Instantaneous playback.
Also, streaming MP4 h264 videos (which are natively supported by the Nexus S) via Upnplay would sometimes just quit the app randomly. Moboplayer was more stable in that regard too.
I don't use Netflix which I know is good. What streaming media (apps or browser links) look good on the N7? A few that I like that seem to work well (and look good):
syfy.com/rewind
usanetwork.com/videos (must subscribe to cable or Sat service)
dish.epixhd.com (must subscribe to cable or Sat service)
dish remote access (app)
crackle (app)
tv.com (app)
None are perfect, but I would rate all a "4"; they look very good full screen. I tried TNT, it kind of sucks.

Plex is a really good answer for streaming from a pc to the nexus if you have lots of movies,
it automatically gets all the tag info from the web, like cover art etc.

I can't add to the OP's list, but for streaming movies on my home network, I use TVersity on a Windows PC because it's compatible with a gazillion devices, particularly my Xbox 360. I have MediaHouse on the Nexus and I watch the movies with MX Player. TVersity does take a little bit of configuring. MediaHouse discovers it within a second or so and its integration with MX Player is seamless.
XBMC?
I just looked at xbmc. Looks interesting. Does it find shows on a dvr? I see the screen examples of like 1000 movies and 8 seasons of 24... do people actually have that much stored on a pc, or does this find stuff on your dvr or on line? No way all that can be stored on an n7.

Does anyone know of an app that will play media from a network share? Ive tried Diceplayer and it doesnt seem to support mkvs... Try archos media player. I haven't tried it yet but it supports SMB. If you come across anything better, let me know
Well, its not an all in one solution, but...
Install VLC for Android and ES file explorer.
In ES file explorer when you try and open an MKV it will ask what app you want to use. tell it VLC and you are in.
The bad news is that the beta of VLC does not appear to support any controls on the Fire remote. It will take
"mouse" command from the cheap MCE remote that people are using as an InfraRed receiver.
Is there a reason XBMC is out? It can be setup to just show your movies and shows without doing any scraping or anything other then just letting you get to your network shares and play it.
I haven't had the greatest luck with XBMC. Ive set it up on numerous devices and its probably that I just end up getting frustrated with it. I ran it naively back in my original Xbox but now I just cant seem to get a handle on seeing it up to my liking. Plex has been great but I don't think my server has enough Wheaties to handle maybe more than 2 streams which is why I've been looking for something to just stream content across the network.

You should try Vimu Player. You won't even have to sideload it is in the fire tv store.

Ill give it a shot. I have Plex set up and it works great for me. But I have kids and they want to stream stuff too and Im concerned that my media server isnt going to have the Wheaties to stream that much stuff so the option of being able to play directly from the share is what Im after. My Plex server is an Athlon Phenom II X3 with 16GB of RAM.. really doesnt do anything but run Plex, SabNZB and PlayOn..
Thanks for the heads up!
I use MX Player and Skifta on my android devices to access my DLNA server. So you can give MX Player a try it handles mkvs perfectly fine.
Vimu looks like it has a lot of potential but sadly most of my MKV files dont have sound and I cant really find any settings to change for that. Im going to give MX Player a shot now.. I dont know if thats DLNA only but if it is, thats not what Im looking for. I just want to be able to stream without transcoding on the server side.
MX Player isn't DLNA only it can handle other network streams just fine as long as you know what they are.
DLNA is just happens to be how I push my media files around the house to my devices.
Yea.. I looked at it and couldnt find a way to browse to shares... Im using a Mede8r for playing from network shares right now.. Im so close to being able to ditch everything except the FireTV.. if I could find a good network player that just plays, I could get rid of all my other boxes. I really want the "one box to rule them all" thing......

I had issues with ES working with the Amazon remote. Are you using an external keyboard/mouse to control it?
Personally I do not have a Fire TV. Just trying to help out is all.
A keyboard and mouse should work fine. Even an air mouse should be ok as well if you want to go that route.
I'm really surprised that Qloud Media doesn't get more attention. You install it as a server on either Windows or Mac, point it at your media and that's it.
Run the client on Android, iOS or Windows devices, plug in the server PIN and you're off. Done and done.
The video is transcoded on the fly, so streaming over the internet results in a lower-quality image at times, but it's certainly watchable.
The GUI isn't fancy, but quite functional. The server end has almost no bells and whistles. You could think of it as Plex-ultra-lite, so there's no overhead processing going on. The server exists only to serve media and that's all. No indexing of your collection, no downloading cover images, etc. It just streams media from whatever source you choose and I haven't had any problems streaming anything in my collection, even .mkv files encoded with AC3 audio that the Chromecast won't touch.
I just loaded the client up to my new FTV last night and again, it works perfectly.
The only minor drawback is that the aspect ratio is a bit weird when viewed on the FTV. It's not perfectly 16:9 but more like 15:9, so the image is a bit squished in from the sides. You don't really notice it after a few minutes though.
Im surprised it's 6 months later and there is still no easy way of playin network shared files, say from a NAS device with a media server, on a Fire TV without having to sideload an app. If I'm wrong please correct me. I did try ViMu but it couldn't play any of my files (mostly MP4s) - everyone said it was unable to play. Currently I use an XBox 360 to browse/watch videos, which I have fairly organized into folders. Why is this so difficult? My Sony TV has a player but it doesn't support folders so its hundreds of videos just in alphabetical order by filename which isn't ideal- plus you can only read the first few characters of the file name without looking at a detailed view so no way to tell what specific file you're looking at if they all start with the same word.
Yes I tried XMBC but it's way overkill, I don't need or want custom artwork per file, it crashes, and it's also not something I can put in the regular fite tv menu. Also XMBC doesn't play 720p content full screen for some reason.
Has anyone had better luck?
Edit ---------------------------
Well after some more trial and error I ended up using Llama to auto start XBMC in place of some other random app so I basically have XMBC on my main Fire TV screen. I also deleted all XBMC data and didn't run any file scrapers this time, and only access files via the Windows Network Share, so it is a much cleaner looking interface like I wanted. Finally the screen size issue was actually the entire Fire TV screen size which I had to enlarge in the Fire TV Display settings. Even maxed out it doesn't 100% fill the screen but it's much closer, I can live with it. Although I didn't bring it up I was also having an issue with the time display I was blaming on XMBC but was again the Fire TV itself was set to Pacific time- you'd think Amazon would have set the timezone right.
Anyway I feel it's much than it was earlier- still occasional crashes on XBMC but not too bad. Just wish I didn't was a few dollars downloading paid apps that didn't work as I thought they were supposed to.
If XBMC is crashing, consider trying SPMC (fork of XBMC). Its available in the Amazon app store (but for the Stick it must be side loaded).
I'm using it on my FTV Stick, and its been solid. No crashes or hangs.
Does anyone know why my MX Player stop playing on my one box it's saying cannot play link it's on my firestick on TV
Hi all,
I have been trying to stream videos from my laptop to my Note, and I haven't been able to get it running smoothly. I have tried a number of different players, but the issue is that it will either stutter like crazy or play audio without video. I can be more specific about the types of files (mkv, h264, 720p, etc.) and players (VLC for Android beta, Archos Video, MX Player, etc.).
Has ANYONE managed to stream and watch videos from their PC/laptop to this tablet successfully or is this tablet just not capable?
Many thanks!
I am running a plex server on my desktop and stream to several devices, including my note.
Another vote for plex it's pretty amazing. You can get it for free after you get some free coins from the amazon app store.
Of course the tablet is capable of streaming video smoothly. I use MX Player to stream videos from a samba server (traditional Windows share, no special software required). The MX Player is configured to use the 'HW+' decoder. It plays Full HD mkvs no problem.

That's not a good idea as a software decoder will burn through your battery, especially with HD content.
@Junetastic Can you try playing the sample videos from this site http://www.auby.no/files/video_tests/ ? I have downloaded them to my computer and then tried streaming them to my tablet using the HW+ decoder and it worked without any problems (except the 'Birds' video, which is 40mbps and is too much for my wifi network to handle reliably. Once copied to the tablet, it of course played without problems.)

I usually just have to use the software decoder for the Audio. Didn't really know it would take a hit on the battery. How much more will it really take? I have gone through many media players and found this to be the easiest solution.

Oh, I don't think you have to worry about battery life if you software decode just the audio. It's the video that takes a lot of work to decode. From what I seem to remember, software decoding of HD video can drain the battery up to several times faster (depending on brightness and other settings, which can change the relative energy consuption of the decoding process).

However, when I add them to my Plex library I can play all of them just fine. The Plex server handles all the transcode that is needed and I just have to click play. I don't need to worry about formats or bitrates (unless I want to). It is so simple my 5yo can use it to watch videos on her tablet. She can even sync videos for offline viewing on car trips.

Well, it seems that the hardware decoders are quite different on the Snapdragon vs. Exynos and since Samsung is very sparse with documentation, the MX Player developers didn't manage to optimize their software for the Exynos (this is just my guess). So you might try a different player, perhaps some will work fine. But then again, it might not. In which case you might have to abandon universal streaming and either transcode your videos or use an application that will do it for you on the fly (e.g. Plex as WJThomas proposed). The downside is you have to use a computer (and often a paid app as is the case with Plex) and can't stream your content from a NAS.

The upside is that you don't have to worry about which device supports which formats, and that you can stream content from some NAS's without a computer. If you subscribe to PlexPass the app is free, and you can use the app to sync media to your device (and then you can even stream from device to device)
Can someone please explain how they're playing .mkv files without playback stopping after a few seconds?
What I'm trying to do is play full bit-rate Blu-ray .mkv rips. I am using ES File Explorer to navigate to shared folders on my Windows PC, and what happens is that the video will eventually start playing but then stop after 5 or so seconds of playback and never continue again. I've tried accessing the files via DNLA software like Servio, but I get the exact same result each time.
And bandwidth is not the problem, as I was able to stream uncompressed content just fine when I had my Surface Pro 2.

I use ES File Explorer to browse a 3TB networked hard drive and stream Blu-Ray .mkv files to my tablet with no problem. I use MX Player Pro (H/W decoder, H/W+ causes MX Player to force close on KitKat). No issues with playback.
Sorry if this has been answered before but I searched the forum and found very little info.
I just got my AFTV and sideloaded XBMC (signed-xbmc-13.1-FireTV(v6)) on to it. I have Audio Passthrough enabled so that my MKV files with AC-3 and DTS (not DTS HD) can go directly to my receiver. What I am noticing is that the Playback of these files (Over a wired Network both devices connected to a Gigabit switch) seem to be jittery or choppy (not so much that I can not watch them). I am coming from a WD Live TV and it never had this problem. I have tried playing the files via SMB and NFS shares and both seem to show the same results. The file sizes range from 400MB to up to 10GB. I have tried both Hardware Acceleration and Software. Is this a limitation of the AFTV (Which I don't want to believe because the WD Live TV has way lower specs) or is there a certain setup I have to do in the Settings to get it to play 100% Smooth?

I experience the same with my FireTV and the Ouya. It's really noticable when the Motion Interpolation settings is ACTIVE on my LEDTV.
With the Motion Interpolation desactivated, It's harder to notice, but it's there.
Glad to see that i'm not alone noticing this.

So I am guessing it's a limitation of XBMC? Movies off of Amazon Prime play flawlessly, but I assume those aren't MKV's. I really like the box but this is a deal breaker for me. I have a huge collection of BluRay Rips in MKV format. I guess it's back to the WD Live TV.

I got flawless playback of non-DTS MKV on the Sony NSZ-GS7 I once had until replacing it with Fire TV because it got corrupted somehow.
I think Fire TV is missing proper support for a lot of essential formats.

Just to be clear, the hiccup I talk about is hard to see for a common human eye (my girlfriend doesn't notice at all). The movie plays really well,
But for a 24p on 24hz refreshrate fan, the tinny hiccup is noticable. jdawng0024, do we talk about the same thing ?

Mine is noticeable to everyone who sees it. The file plays but is Jerky. Coming from a WD Live TV the Amazon Box Plays worse. I have been reading the forums for a couple of days now and I might install an older version of XBMC. All of my files are mkv with DTS or AC-3 audio and they are all 1080p.

Might be a ''noob' question but, are you able to see your rendering stats with ''O' on the keyboard' or with your remote (keymap no.3). Is it really dc:stf-h264 that you see or dc:ff-h264 ??
I say that because I found a bug that, if I play a bunch of music video for example with party mode or not, after a while, maybe 15 or 25 clips. XBMC cannot decode the video with hardware decoding anymore. Even if libstagefright is selected in acceleration settings, the renderer clearly displays dc:ff-h264 for all my h264 video. Because of that, all videos stutters/jitters/frame drop. The only workaround I found is to reboot the FireTV with Home+Play for 5 seconds. And everythings is find until it happens again.

ive also experienced issues with xbmc properly selecting libstagefright. it happened when i was screwing around with both mediacodec and libstagefright enabled. the fix for me was to disable all acceleration, reboot the unit, enable libstagefright, reboot again, good to go ever since.
Ok think I got it a lot better. I restarted from Scratch. Every once in a while I will see it but it isn't nearly as bad. going to try to load the avancedsettings.xml and see if that smooths it out even further.
You are at a stalemate with XBMC since an OTA update reportedly fixed jittery 1080P playback AFAIK.
I found some speed enhancements throughout the weeks, but I never got around to posting them all.
Terribly sorry about forgetting to make that speed enhancement thread to those that want it,I have just been out of it lately.

Could you give more details on this OTA update?
Ended up going back to my WD Live TV. MKV playback blows the amazon fireTV out of the water. I will continue to follow its progress and hopefully it gets better. I will buy it again once things get ironed out.

Hey, just wondering if this ever got resolved. I'm also a WDTV Live user, and I was thinking about "upgrading" to a FireTV with its much snappier interface, more apps, etc. But almost ALL of my movies and TV are h264 mkvs with either DTS or AC3 sound (and some AAC/mp4s mixed in there as well).
Can the FireTV play those kinds of files flawlessly from a SMB or NFS share? It's been months since this thread was active, so I wanted to see if this is a "solved" issue nowadays. Thanks!

So just sideload XBMC (any particular version/build/etc?) and you're off to the races? No rooting, no flashing, etc?
Plays mkvs containing h264 or MPEG4, DTS or AC3, old xvid avis, etc? Will it play subtitles that aren't muxed into the mkvs (like in an srt file named the same as the mkv)?
I am also experiencing judder when playing 1080p H.264 (AC3 audio) MKV files with the fire TV.
I’ve tried XBMC and MXPlayer. I am seeing judder and frame drops with my AFTV, but can’t figure out why or how to tweak it. The same files play smoothly on my Galaxy S4 and Nexus 7 using MX Player.
Any thoughts?

im rooted but it doesnt matter for XBMC, im running gotham 13.2 , DTS DD and AC3 all work great via HDMI and optical, i would assume it will auto use a local srt file but for sure you can point it to it.. xbmc will scrape the net for any subtitles for every movie i've encountered, so it shouldnt be an issue for you. the XBMC wiki has a good section with everything you need to know about xbmc and the FTV, there are a few device specific settings you need to make and your off to the races.
Has anyone who was experiencing the DTS MKV video judder audo sync issues resolved them? I just picked up two AFTV's and can not get my DTS MKV's to work.
connection
I got AFTV a month ago and did not have an issue streaming MKV videos from my synology nas via WiFi 5GHz. after a few days i started to notice video judder and i switch from WiFi to plug in Ethernet and it made it worse. it appears that AFTV connects better with WiFi from streaming shows/movies compare to plug in Ethernet. is there specific settings i need to adjust for the Ethernet plug to work better?

mine all work fine, you have libstagefright enabled and media codec disabled right?
