T Mobile HTC One M8 has No OS, Please HELP!!!!!! - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I'm a noob at messing with rooting or ROMs, I have a T-Mobile HTC One M8 that I rooted, it worked fine until 2 weeks later it started rebooting every few seconds, I went into TWRP Recovery and wiped the Dalvik Cache and the regular Cache, it worked fine for a few days then started rebooting every minute or so so I attempted to wipe both the Dalvick Cache and the regular Cache again thinking it would solve the problem once more. I went into Advanced Wipe and wiped Dalvik Cache, Cache, Data, Internal Storage and System...it was a noob mistake thinking that I just did a Factory Wipe. I'm not sure why I did that, but afterwards, I lost the OS to my phone because of it.
These are the Problems:
I have S-On
I didn't do a Backup of anything
I don't know how to find the CID (if needed to fix it)
I have no idea how to fix the phone
I've attached a picture of what my bootloader shows for its information. Please can someone help me fix my mistake...I really want to learn how to fix this. Can someone please instruct me how to get my OS back? I want to be able to use this phone again.

I think you can side load in recovery a ROM to flash. Lemme check...

I have a friend that did that this is what he did:
Boot into recovery phone plugged into pc
Put Rom in adb folder and start cmd from that folder
adb devices (to make sure pc is seeing the phone)
adb push NameOfRom.zip /
On phone goto install in recovery pick the Rom and install it

Do you have a micro SD card? If so, download a ROM on your computer, transfer it to micro SD card, put the card into your m8, boot into recovery (hold volume up or down and power, I forget which one, then select recovery) go to install and choose external storage. Then install the rom like normal.

The mistake you made there was that you wiped the system which removes any is that is on your phone.... I've made that mistake before.... That's why every dev says make nandroid backup every so often:good::victory:

If you have external sd, follow the guide in my sig

System refers specifically to the OS, so obviously if you wipe it, you will have no OS.
First off, my advice is that you should not be wiping anything if you don't know what it is, or what the effect will be. Sorry, not trying to be harsh, but you see the result if you rush into things without being properly informed or careful.
On a similar note, there is usually no reason to wipe Internal Storage. Some of the more OCD folks here like to do it from time to time, just to do a really thorough cleanup. But again, if you don't have a good specific reason to wipe a partition, you shouldn't do it. For instance, even if you had done a TWRP backup, the default save location is Internal Storage, so you would have deleted the backup anyway. Same thing if you had a ROM zip on the Internal Storage (to flash in case of problems like no OS), you would have wiped that too. Its a bit too common to see folks post "I had a ROM zip on the phone, but I wiped everything so now I can't flash the ROM".
All you need to do to recover is adb push a ROM to the internal storage; or copy a ROM to a removable MicroSD card. Then flash either in TWRP.

Thanks for the information,
How do I find out if a ROM is compatible with my phone? or does it matter? also, I read that to flash a ROM, you need to have S-OFF? My phone has S-On, does that matter as well?

Any ROM meant for the M8 should work. If you want to be sure, check the thread for that ROM to see the T-Mobile version is supported. or other T-Mob users have flashed it successfully.

No, you do not need S-off to flash ROMs. You can flash ROMs with S-on. Any mods that require s-off should state so in the top post of the thread for that mod.

Okay thanks, I downloaded a Nandroid Backup from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51836232&postcount=1
The one that shows this: TWRP-TmoUS-Stock-Rom-Backup-1.12.531.19.zip
In the TWRP I go to Install, change the storage to Micro SDcard and choose the zip file, I then swipe to confirm flash...but it doesn't go through it says that it can't read the cache.
Am I possibly doing something wrong?

I think you need to go into boot loader and type command (fastboot erase cache) without the brackets there. Then reboot recovery and try again.

Fastboot erase cache, as previously mentioned. Or using TWRP to erase cache (select Wipe, go Advanced, and check cache) should work, too.

Hey buddy, good to see you, too! I got the AT&T M8 in May, and have been hanging out in the AT&T version forum section. But it seems that most folks just post in this section, so I've been coming here lately.
I think of you just about every time I re-initialize my Subaru car stereo (which you taught me) whenever I flash a new ROM, or get a new device (like the M8)!

I chose the Nandroid Backup that says: TWRP-TmoUS-Stock-Rom-Backup-1.12.531.19.zip
but when I install it. it says " checking for MD5 file...skipping MD5 check: no MD5 file found"
I opened the zip that I downloaded and it does show an MD5 file so, what do you think I should do?

A nandroid backup zip is for you to extract and place the folder to TWRP/backup on your sdcard.
In TWRP you select restore and select that folder.
It is not for install like a ROM.zip

A nandroid backup is indeed a ROM and to replace your current ROM ... just the installation is different from a ROM.zip. You restore a nandroid backup, complete and reboot... you have a stock ROM runnning.
Check here for ROM but not many for T-Mobile : http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-htc-one-m8/development

I see, so I have the ability to fix this phone by using this backup on an sd card? its a possibility...by creating a TWRP folder and extracting the nandroid backup.zip in the folder.

Yes
You should already have TWRP backup folder.
The structure is TWRP/BACKUPS/yourdeviceserialno/folderhere
Good luck, gotta go now

CM7 final bootloop

So I have a rooted (latest unrevoked) EVO with stock ROM. Radio is the current version so I did not need to flash a new radio. I have the rom backed up with rom manager and also a Titanium Backup.
I download Cm7-final with Rom Manager and proceed to flash it. All appears well until it loads and I'm stuck in CM7 splash bootloop and never get into the actual OS/homescreen. I boot to recovery and restore my prior rom backup, luckily all is fine.
My question is what have i done wrong? I read the EVO CM7 Wiki and it looks like I followed the instructions correctly. Do I need to ditch using RomManager and try it manually? Any suggestions on why I got this bootloop?
i had the same problem when i tried to update on the g2. i backed up the phone and wipe data and caches and flashed again the it worked you might have to do it acouple of times

Using the RomManager interface I chose to Wipe Data and Cache and also chose the gapps package to install. I guess I could try it again but I was mystified why it didnt work since I "thought" it was so simple.
If you're coming from a sense rom, wipe cache, data, dalvik, system, boot, basically everything but the sd card. After that, flash cyanogenmod, then gapps, then start the phone.

I'm an android noob, you'll have to forgive me. I thought when I selected "wipe data and cache" prior to flashing CM7 in the RomManager interface that it meant it would wipe all of that.
So I need to manually wipe everything except the card? Also, a secondary question, will any of this jeopardize the ability to restore my currently backed up stock sense rom if **** hits the fan?

No it won't as long as you have a nandroid. Look up the "VR Superwipe," and flash it. I'd recommend booting into recovery manually and doing this. Wipe cache and dalvik after flashing the superwipe for good measure. Finally flash the ROM.

I had the same issue....although mine have been caused by restoring system data.
What I did is manually DL the rom, boot into recover, wiped cache/dalvic, flashed from zip (Both CM7 and the proper GAPPS file) and it worked.

nandroid? So the RomManager rom backup I created isnt sufficient? I also have a full Titanium Backup saved too. Why Nandroid? I was under the impression this was just a similar app to Titanium - wrong?

I have no tried since I got all these suggestions. Sorry for the confusion. I suspect manually wiping and manually installing will work.
Alpine:
When I first started flashing stuff I relied on the Clockwork app to do everything. I used it to flash roms and clear/wipe data and cache. However, after running into problems like yours I started doing it manually.
What I started doing was booting into RECOVERY (i know it sounds scary but it really isn't) A little off topic but there is a great app that I think every rooted user should use, it's called: Reboot Control Widget It only costs a measly $1 in the Market but it's well worth it. Basically you put the widget on the desktop and click on it. You are then given the option to Reboot your phone, Hot Boot (fast reboot), boot into Recovery, Bootloader or Shut Down. Best dollar you will ever spend on an app.
So anyway, l strayed from my point. The problem you are experiencing is partially due to not having fully wiped your phones data/cache. I know you think you did it through the Clockwork app but from experience it doesn't work that well. There is a "flashable" file called Calkulin's Format All. It is in the DEV section posted in Calkulin's Rom section. It will clear everything except the contents of your SD card.
1. Boot into RECOVERY
2. find: INSTALL ZIP FROM SDCARD
3. select the Calkulin's Format ALL.zip file (your phone will be totally clean after this)
4. Again, choose INSTALL ZIP FROM SDCARD
5. Select the ROM you want to flash. (If it is a Cyanogen based ROM you will have to flash the appropriate Google Apps file after flashing the ROM. If flashing a Sense ROM the Gapps file is not necessary)
6. Flash Gapps file (Google apps if necessary)
7. Once this is done select REBOOT SYSTEM NOW
I feel confident that if you follow those steps you won't run into any bootloops!
I have added the Format All.zip file that I mentioned in my last post.
Little advice:
- take the time to do a Nandroid before flashing a new rom
- use Titanium to restore only the apps w/o the data. I know it's nice to restore everything the way you had it on the last rom but from my experience this has led to instability in the new rom. Also from my experience when you are on a SENSE rom and use Titanium to backup your files and data when you install a AOSP (like CM) rom and try to restore those files and data it won't even let you. Just something to keep in mind if you are switching between CM to Sense or vice versa.

Yes it should.
Manually wipe you factory/data, cache, dalvik, then flash the rom with the latest gapps and you'll be good.

Wow, great post. Very informative and detailed, thanks a lot.
So why is creating a nandroid backup better than the ROM backup function in RomManager? I restored that rom once and it worked flawlessly. How does nandroid differ from the rom backup created in RomManager?
when you use clockwordmod recovery to wipe your phone the dalvik doesn't wipe with the wipe option you see on the main screen, i belive you will see the option to wipe it in the advanced menu

They are the same. ROM Manager boots you into recovery and nandroids for you. People have mixed experiences with ROM Manager. From my experience it is best just to boot manually into recovery and take care of all your flashing and wiping there.

Stock Nandroid backup Bootloop - help

Hey guys, this post is not for me but for a friend.
As the title already mentions, he's trying to get to stock
so the step he follows are:
Move boot.img from his stock rom nandroid backup to his fastboot folder
so lets begin
first step-> boot into bootloader
fastboot erase cache
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot erase cache
--> boot into recovery
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache
wipe delvik cache
-> back up and restore
--> restore
--- nandroid backup gets installed ---
... so far i can't see where he is doing anything wrong
so he proceeds to reboot his phone.. and now i asked him multiple times about the taken procedure and he claims his phone boots normally to the point where the wallpaper shows up and then he talks about the phone falling into a constant bootloop
What went wrong? Why is he experiencing this?
I've taken into consideration that he might be doing something wrong, but then i even wrote the steps above and he says he did it exactly that way.
i'm clueless to say the least and i hope someone here could help me help him
thank you
Try the cache clean up after the nandroid is restored.
Also try to install some other compatible kernel (if it's stock it should be also to find on the forums) after the restore with its modules if the cache clean up doesn't help.

I restored my original 4.0.3 nandroid backup yesterday and got exactly the same problem coming from arhd 9.7.2 4.0.4. I want to get back to stock so I can get JB ota when its available. Mine also loaded the wallpaper and then rebooted. All I did to fix it was copy the boot.img from my nandroid backup and reflash that after I had restored again.
So the way I did it was
Boot into recovery
Full wipe
Restored rom
booted into bootloader
flash boot.img (from original nandroid)
rebooted and worked a treat
Thanks for the help guys. I mentioned all the suggestions on this thread to him and it he was able to get it running

The file shouldn't be on the phone, but on the PC.
Place it in the folder in which you have your fastboot files.
oh of course. I'm being a moron again.
I cant believe I did that. so very very simple. sorry for being a numpty guys. wasn't thinking strait. Done a few custom rom installs but never flashed a backup. Didnt even think. You even have to type the directory into command prompt.sorry guys I can't believe I didn't think that. (was thinking along the lines of installing from zip way)
to be fair the only reason I'm doing all this is because my screen is playing up and I need to return it so getting everything as close to stock as possible so got other things on my mind
everything is working now. Thanks guys. My god stock rom on HTC one x from orange is ugly.

How to do a full wipe

This is my first phone that doesn't have an external SD card and I'm not 100% sure how to properly perform a full wipe it
I know this is a noob question, but I just don't want to brick my phone.
What I Used to Do
Back in the day with my SGS Captivate or SGS2 I just put all my files on my external SD card, then via Android (Astro File Manager) I deleted every folder from the internal SD card, booted into CWM, performed a wipe/factory default, cleared cache, formatted system partition and then installed custom ROM and everything worked fine.
What I Need
I want to be sure that I don't brick it so I'm hoping that someone can give me a step-by-step walk-through of how to install CM 10.1 (or any other ROM i guess) on my phone after completely wiping it of anything on it.
What I've Tried
I used the Galaxy Nexus Toolkit to unlock, root and install CWM but unfortunately when I then installed CM 10.1 via CWM, some leftover files remained from the stock ROM.
Basically, my phone is ridiculously slow/lagging and I'm getting sick of it.
I've tried installing a custom kernel (Franco Kernel), I've set the CPU governor on Performance (1200MHz always) uninstalling any un-needed apps... but my phone is still un-usable.
Sometimes when I install the latest nightly of CM 10.1 I do an update and other times I tried doing a full install where I wipe the Dalvik; neither way helps I still get the ridiculous lag.
The definition of a full wipe:
-wipe data / factory reset
-wipe cache
-wipe dalvik cache
-(optional) format system
Then flash the rom/gapps/kernel.
Maybe you have a "bricked" phone. It has something to do with the emmc chip. How much free storage do you have?
Check it by downloading the app in the screenshot.
If you havent a bricked emmc version, then I suggest returning to stock again, and then root again. ( most clean process , as it restores all the partitions to the stock state.)
Hopefully this helps my friend!
PS: you posted in the wrong forum, don't do it in the future

That's not related to development, read the rules next time.
Try the full wipe zip from Android Revolution HD Rom.
Use the pinned guide for fast boot. Use fast boot format/erase commands for all partitions, and for good measure flash to stock with fast boot also. This is the most surefire way and it hasn't failed me yet.

Thanks for the info, I'll be more careful in the future where I post.
I have the 16GB model and 4GB free right now.
I installed the eMMC Brickbug Check app and it says that my chip is ok (sane).
My phone is definately rooted, so I'm not sure why this app says that root is required for the memory test (clicking it just launches wiki page on rooting).

If you're on 4.2.1 you won't see any CWM backups so get ES File Explorer, give it root access and then go to /data/media/clockworkmod and see what's about. Or boot into CWM and delete some old backups
As for a full wipe, I use this before flashing a new ROM:

It totally forgot about the CWM backups
I'll delete those ASAP
There wasn't a lot in the backups folder but there is about 3.82 GB in the blobs folder in the clockworkmod folder; are those ok to delete?
Flash the newest version of CWM (6.0.2.3) as it doesn't use blobs any more. Delete all old backups and take a new one if you want. Also, check when I added to my last post

Thanks a lot, I'll give that a shot tonight.
I'll update CWM to the latest, then run your super wipe zip followed by the latest CM 10.1.
Thanks a lot for the super wipe zip too.
After wiping and flashing go ahead and run fix permission too.

Thanks guys, my phone is usable again
You guys are awesome.
What I Did
- installed the latest CWM using fastboot
- booted into recovery
- used adb to sideload your super wipe script, then the latest CM 10.1 nightly and then the latest gapps
- fixed permissions via CWM
- restarted my phone to get a very responsive phone again
With my last 2 phones I was spoiled having external SD cards so that i never had to sideload or use fastboot (I let Odin do that part).

[Q] Please help Stuck on the htc one screen after hboot upgrade

hello i decided to upgrade my hboot by flashing the correct firmware http://www.androidrevolution.nl/downloader/download.php?file=3.16.65.2.zip also never did any OTA just update my hboot
my cid is orang216 and now after upgrading i am completely stuck on htc ONE screen i cant boot into my stock ics 4.0.3 rom anymore pleaseeee helppppppp i can however boot into hboot WHAT TO DOOO???
EDIT : Also i unlocked my new hboot again and flashed cwm recovery touch and did a factory reset aka wipe user data from CWM touch menu but no luck helpppp
You could just flash a new Rom instead of your stock Rom.... Fast boot flash the boot.img then go back into recovery and flash away... I believe the reason why ur getting stuck is because ur on a jelly bean hboot now

OMG Thanks sooooo much to XDA now i am running arhd smoothly on my htc one x WOOOOOOT:victory::victory:
though about full wipe i am using cwm recovery and before flashing the boot.img i did select two option
1.wipe data\clear cache
2.Wipe casch partition
those are the only two options i saw in recovery though there are more option in advanced menu but didnt touch those
summery of what i did:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot erase cache
again in recovery selected wipe data and wipe cash partition option
installed arhd from recovery(no tweaks selected and also selected data wipe in AROMA)
rebooted to arhd
so now what? did i do a full wipe??? i dont think i did as all music and game data is still in my storage ??? also did i had to SELECT THE battery stats clear CWM???
and just another question why cant i install any of the game apks that i installed easily when i was in stock ics????
You don't need to wipe data so many times... You only have to do it once, either in Aroma installer or through recovery... Also go to advanced>wipe dalvic n cache
Full wipe means your /system /cache and dalvic cache are wiped clean... the user sd card isn't touched. So none of your pics, videos get deleted!
Even your android folder is intact, so if you have downloaded large game data, no need to download it again, just install the apk and your good to go!
and finally about the apks, you have to go to settings and 'check' install apps from unknown sources! That will solve your problem I guess!

Yes, it's normal that you get that message.."Android is upgrading">..
After wiping cache and dalvic from recovery, when the phone boots up.. it again creates the dalvic for the apps. That's why you get that message and there's no need to flash arhd now...
Just go to settings>Apps>select the game>clear cache/data...

Yes, It deleted the stale data/cache and then rebuilds it when phone boots up... so it's a good thing! I always wipe my cache/dalvic once in 10 days or so...
Yes, no need to bother about the bootloader and stuff for now! Enjoy JB/ARHD!

My device stuck on HTC Logo when I format it !!

My HTC One X stuck on "HTC One's Logo" every time I try to format it,
so I restore my backup which works fine and when I tried to format it the same thing happened.
Whenever I try formatting my device it stuck on the logo !!
Please I need your help, what should I do with this strange problem ??
- Updated on May 26 -
Everything was okay one month ago and I was able to format my device normally but know I can't
I tried almost everything:-
1. I formatted my device then installed the ROM & Boot.img (and I was sure that it will not help)
2. I formatted my device from ARHD Aroma installation
3. I restore my ARHD backup then formatted my device again from CWM Recovery
Tips: formatting from recovery don't touch system partition, I'm sure
What do you mean by format? You mean from custom recovery? Factory reset from bootloader?
Maybe because you delete everything ? And without sytem it won't boot.

If you Factory reset a custom rom, it will bootloop! Because there's nothing to boot beyond the logo!
1. Flash the boot.img from the nandroid backup. Then fastboot erase cache
2. Now go to recovery wipe data/cache/dalvic and then restore the nandroid backup.
3. Reboot. Let the OS load completely.
4. Go to bootloader and then do factory reset.
If your still bootlooping, then download a nandroid backup from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1975140 and then restore it! It will work flawlessly!
If you post your main-version, then we can also find a RUU for you?!

But I tried this lots of times before and it format only user data, and system partition remain as it is.
I forgot to say that also when I flashed ARHD and checked "wipe data partition" in Aroma, the phone also stuck.

Ok. start from zero.
Download again ARHD.
format sd card
Put ROM in Sd
Put this one in sd: http://d-h.st/kG0 (t.y for vin4yak for link)
Put boot.img in fastboot folder.
via cmd (i recomend to copy cmd into fastboot folder ((it automaticaly gives acces to that folder))) adb reboot-bootloader
type fastboot flash boot boot.img (fastboot must be in usb)
wait
reboot in recovery. install super wipe (link given)
clear catche, dalvik
install rom
clear catche, dalvik
And IF! it still got boot loop, go to bootloader and repeat fastboot flash boot boot.img command via cmd. It should work.
And after all, if it doesn't, do a full nandroid restore.
Good luck.
Formatting does only wipe cache and dalvic, you should still be able to boot. It does not get rid of Rom. I do it all the time when flashing a custom kernel. So maybe you should try as suggested above.
from my Viped out one x
Command: fastboot erase cache after flashing boot.IMG will fix it I guess. Looks like none of you do that but I always do that and never, I say never had a bootloop. And I switch ROMs weekly with wipes and all.
Hope it helps.

His question had nothing to do with flashing a boot.IMG, I've never not fast boot erase cache either. He was asking why when he hits the format button in recovery, his phone won't boot. Format in recovery simply wipes cache and dalvic so it should still boot, just like when you format after flashing the modules from a kernel.

O sorry for the misunderstanding.
So basicly OP asks "i took the fuel out of my car, why won`t it drive?"
Depends on wich recovery then cause in twrp a factory reset wipes not only cache and dalvik for sure!
From twrp site: A factory reset wipes data and cache (which includes dalvik cache). A factory reset will also wipe sd-ext and android_secure if your device has those items

Thanks all for your help but unfortunately all in vain
Before a month I was able to format without any problem, but now I can't.
I tried almost everything:
1. I formatted my device then installed the ROM & Boot.img (and I was knowing that it will not help)
2. I formatted my device from ARHD Aroma installation
3. I restore my ARHD backup then formatted my device again from CWM Recovery
All these attempts but in vain, please I need your help essentially, I need to format my device as I was doing before.
