Hi,
I just received my HTC One X today as an upgrade from T-Mobile. I've been waiting to get my hands on this for ages like most of you so you would most likely know how I feel when its not how you expected i.e things going wrong/not working etc.
THE PROBLEM:
The problem seems to be that when I am on a call using the speaker mode, the mic does not seem to work, therefore the person on the other side cannot hear me. I tested it again myself and it seems as if the mic mutes itself when you press the speaker mode in a call. You are still able to hear the other person yet they cannot hear you.
However when I am not in speaker mode, everything works as normal so I am wondering is this a software fault or hardware fault.
Please get back to me as soon as, as I really do not want to return the phone and go through the dreaded process.
Thank you for reading.
P.S
My HTC One X:
Software Version: 1.26.110.5
HTC SDK: 4.11
(As i am on Tmobile, My HOX is branded therefore has not received latest update)
I have the exact same problem, I bought the phone about a month ago, and I didn't check the speaker mode function, then I flash few different custom rom, Now I found the speaker mode problem as tkr1992 has, since I unlock the bootloader (although I relock the bootloader) but HTC won't repair the phone free of charge for me, they say the phone need a new mainbroad... will cost me 2XX USD,
I don't even know is the phone has this problem when I first bought it or after I flash some custom rom.
HtC told me it should be software problem cos it is the same mic that use in speaker mode or non speaker mode, so when other side can hear you when you not on speaker mode, mean the mic is alright, BUT they told me it need to replace the mainboard cos I have unlock the bootloader so they can't not recover the phone to stock rom, BUT again I already relock the bootloader and RUU the stock rom back to the phone, still the same problem.
I need help too, Any good fellow can help??????????
I hope it is just a software fault. I did just receive an update today from T-Mobile, as my HOX is branded. The update is 1.28.110.7. It still seems that my mic problem is present.
Does anyone also know what fixes are included in this update?
Thanks
Any ideas anyone? Would really like to fix this instead of sending phone back to tmobile.
Thanks

Regarding to your inquiry about HTC One X, we would like to provide you with following advice and solution as below: First you can diagnosis the hardware issue on the speaker. Please kindly type *#*#3424#*#* on the dial screen, you will enable the function test program. And then select "Audio Test", tap Run. Please finish the test as instructions.
But it didn't work for me the phone just didn't do anything, you can try.
Thanks for that, i just tried the audio test diagnosis. The test shows that everything is working correctly however the same problem still occurs within a call like before.

Try reset to factory setting, see if it does any different.
That is the HTC guy try to do to my one x.
btw have you rooted your phone or unlocked the downloader?
You have working Navigation application in background and this make call routing first to speaker part permanently, not to earphone - like phone is in Handsfree mode. Try to disable it / shut down it / and all be fine.

I'm experiencing this exact issue as well - has anyone come up with any possible solutions?
There are 2 microphones on this phone, the upper one next to the headset jack and the other next to the lower right corner of the screen.
While on phone mode the lower one is the main microphone because its closer to your mouth, on speaker mode the upper one becomes the main mic.
It's probably a hardware fault since you flashed stock rom and it's still not working.
I seem to have this issue too - did anyone get a solution
Audio tests fine, but in Google Talk, or Google Hangout, or Phone Dialer in speaker mode - the mic input is not working, so recipient cannot hear.
Google Maps Issue
So my wife has the same phone (HTC One X) and has the most recent update to 4.0.4 (stock everything) and found out that it is indeed either the google 'navigation' app, or the google 'maps' app running in the background that will give this problem. Simply go to settings, then apps, then stop the maps or navigation process, make sure you go to the cached processes as well and stop those. Right after that her phone started working again. I also tested with the HTC test tool code that was given earlier and just like everyone else the test passed fine. So this should be the fix.
i have the same issue..
.. since updating my HOX to 3.18.401.1 and can confirm that disabling the google maps service solves the issue (at least for now)...

Update: Nope .... it worked for the first 2 calls, now silence again.....Did already 3 factory resets....no idea anymore, i think i gonna sned it in to HTC...
Hello,
I have the same problem and many users "HOX" have the same worries. It seems that when you change the screen touch there is a lot of trouble of this kind.
Does anyone find a solution?

Any update on this? Did you send it to HTC? Mine has also stopped suddenly a few days back while on viper 3.7.2. Tried factory reset, flashed the rom again, flashed other roms, but the problem is still there...
in may case it was a defective mainboard....
I had to send in my HOX 3 times to HTC repair until they (and me) figured out it was a Mainboard problem.
The first 2 repair attempts where quite strange, because they changed some parts which have absolutely nothing to do with the MIC and when i received it the problem was still here, but anyway
I came to the final diagnosis, because after turning the HOX on, it was working for some calls, then the MIC suddenly stopped...Getting more and more angry because of sending the phone in and receiving it 3 weeks later unrepaired, i once squeezed my HOX really hard during a "silent" phonecall and while squeezing it (on both lower edges) the MIC worked again.
After that experience all was clear, because this behaviour is typical for a hairline crack on the PCB. I wrote this on the RMA form and they exchanged the Mainboard....
So, finally i have my HOX again for 4 weeks now (after almost 2 1/2 months without it) and it works flawlessly....
So, good luck guys and a lot of patience

Thanks for your input mate. Was your bootloader unlocked? Did the warranty cover that?

Since moving to Jellybean (when it first got released) and attempting to use Google Now, I noticed that the it wasn't doing or understanding what I was saying. It appeared that there was a lot of static noise before it would recognise what I was trying to say.
I loaded some recording software to make sure it wasn't just Google Now, but it turns out that it just hisses for that first 5 seconds before it comes good. It does not happen in phone calls, just when recording/talking to Google Now. Changing ROMs, kernels and radios has not changed the problem. Even moving up to the new 4.1.1 hasn't rectified the problem.
Has anyone else had this problem? Has it ever been fixed?
Any help would be fantastic!
Bumping.
Still can't seem to find an answer anywhere for this.
This is a real problem. It makes the new Voice Search unusable.
There's a bug on it but it hasn't had any real attention - http://code.google.com/p/android/is...s Owner Summary Stars&groupby=&sort=&id=29092
Edit: interesting that yours is a Telstra phone too. Wonder if its build/baseband related?

I've tried different basebands, ROMs etc. Still suffers from the 2 seconds of hissing/not working microphone before it comes good and is usable.
Interesting. I too am on Telstra, tried few 4.1 and 4.1.1, CM10 and the same issue. Not to mention, even after the hiss is over, the volume is very low and rubbish in general.
Interesting that it affects a lot of Telstra phone owners.
Anyone reverted to the stock Telstra rom/baseband to test? Does it affect voice search in 4.0.x as well?
Same problem!
I have this exact problem!! I've had difficulty finding any others with this problem until I found this thread.
Grr, mine shows static for about 4 seconds and it struggles to understand anything at all! After those 4 seconds, it dies down, then I can speak and it is better but far from perfect with recognising my speech!
FYI mine is a yakjudv Telstra phone from Australia which I flashed to yakju 4.0.4 and then did a JB update OTA......
It was on the stock DVKK6 but am now on the XXLF1 radio that came with JB....
Argh, whats going on, i was so pumped for google now voice actions!!! Now its basically useless!!
Mines almost spot on 4 seconds every single time.....
Any solution to this would be greatly appreciated!
+1 again on my gnex
factory installed yakjudv i think, from vodafone.
I have had it since ICS, tried to record lectures in class, and the first few seconds is always static.
Now that you mention it, when I activate voice search in google now, i see the grey circle voice indicator spazzes out for a few seconds before it goes back to normal. Maybe that's why I have to speak loud for it to recognise my voice to make it distinct from the initial static, so it usually doesn't work that well.
Kinda weird that it appears to be Telstra gnex's. Still no luck in finding fixes yet.

Any workaround or fix for this?
It seems like Santaria has already tried a variety of different radios with no luck.
Is this a case of sit and hope that Google fixes this?
So what exactly is the problem? There's 2 mics in the phone, but its picking up the wrong one?
Since when were there 2 mics? one for phone call and one for speakerphone? I didn't even know this. How could this happen and why is it only on Aussie phones? The hardware should be the same across the board?
I'm so confused
One is for noise reduction.
Cheers,
Jason
I wonder if there's a way to enable/disable the noise reduction mic?

One is for calls the other one is for recording videos and video calls...The Galaxy Nexus do not have a noise reduction software on board neither the required hardware so no noise canceling feature!

There seems to be some debate about its effectiveness - probably related to the above bug disabling it in some cases.
For the record, same problem on my telstra Gnex, google now only works if I hold the mic right to my mouth.
I'm having the exact same issue. I just bought a new gn that was locked to Vodafone Australia. I unlocked it and went to yakju then got the OTA and then started having the exact same problem that everyone else has described. I get massive static and so far nothing I've said has been recognised. It just times out with the message "recognising...".
I've recorded my voice using an app but everything sounded fine and I didn't get any static. I have the same problem if I use a hands free kit too.
Seems this happened with ICS also

I take it they're never going to fix this problem
Hi I have a Nexus 7 first generation and recently I did 2 things:
- replaced the broken USB port
- and right after I have updated the software version to 5.1 (OTA update)
Soon after I've noticed an intermittent issue with the sound on some apps.
Is working for a while than after it stops working then later it works again, and so on (in apps, with youtube, or other app).
I can't pinpoint what the issue is, is it a hardware issue or a software issue. I tend to believe it might be a software issue, but not sure.
I did clear the Dalvin cache from recovery but the issue still persists.
Has anyone else encountered this kind of weird issue?
Anyone?

Hey guys, anyone else have the problem of the microphone not working unless the speakerphone is on?
Basically if I am on a call the other person cannot hear me unless I turn my speakerphone on. I did a full factory reset and it's still not working. It's running 5.0.1.
Anyone have this problem or have any ideas? Thanks guys.

Did this start happening on 5.0.1? Are you using any Xposed modules? Maybe try to ODIN back to bone stock KK and see what happens.

Hey sorry for the delayed response here been crazy the past day.
So basically I was running whatever version of android came on the phone originally for the longest time because root was "right around the corner"! So eventually I got sick of waiting and upgraded to 5.0.1 with the OTA update. The phone worked fine for about a week on that version.
Then just suddenly I was not able to use the microphone unless the phone was on speakerphone. Bluetooth devices also worked. I even tried a factory reset, same thing.
So I went to the verizon store and it's under warranty, the new one should be arriving at my shop momentarily. I just have to ship this one back.
Oh and to your other question.. no I was not running any Xposed modules. I didn't do too much fiddling around with the phone because I was just waiting for root for the longest time.

Typically it would be best to test the mic making a sound recording and play it back. If it doesn't work, it's a hard ware issue. If it works there would be a connection issue.

this may sound dumb and you didn't mention it but did you change your case. I remember some of the cases were not aligned with the mic hole. I had to drill the case and make a new hole that was aligned with the mic.
Since yesterday evening I did encounter the following problem.
Plugging my earphones wouldn't send any audio to them, speakers always active.
Microphone nevers works, not in calls, not in apps, not while recording a video.
I did perform a factory reset and installed paranoid android, still the same problem. I am restoring OxygenOS last version right now...
It's been a very frequent problem since the beginning of october, did anyone encounter this issue recently?
This sounds like a hardware issue to me. Were there any potentially problematic events (drops, moisture ...) in past 2 months?

Not really, no, I did also notice that I can't save videos at all.
EDIT: after a HARDRESET (using MSM downloader) to Marshmallow, updating with OTA, everything works again... WTF?
EDIT2: I have been able to record a whatsapp audio, working fine. Did try to make a phone call, doesn't work anymore
this has been occurring to me also when using iphone earphones. but using other earphones works well. try using different brand

Not earphones issue... I had to simply clean the connector, the female jack on the phone, there was some cotton on the end!
Edit: the mic and the earphones works for few minutes, but after a while they completely stop, only a phone reboot solves the problem (just temporarily!)
I did install the Android Mic Fix Magisk module... My phone seems to be working correctly since few hours now.
Update: not even Android Mic Fix solves this... the only temporary solution I have is to Reboot the device
frankdd89, have you found the solution? RN i have the same problem, I have flashed my and everything was solved but, like 3 days after again just stooped working well. I have a doubt whether is a hardware issue due to the mic works well during several days, let me know what did you at the end..
I have the same problem! I'm going Mad!

ive been having the same issue with my oneplus 3 for last 8 months. I have tried resetting, restoring, turning off google voice and have replaced the mic/charge port twice but nothing seems to solve the problem. Would really like to find a solution to this problem as i tend to think it's software related because i started having the problem after an update. At first was sporadic but mic is completely out now.
Hi all, i have the same problem with microphoned earphone
I have tried many type of earphone but the problem is the same (at the first connection and use, the microphone doesn't work , at the second try (record voice or call) without disconnection of earphone the phone change the icon in the status bar, from the icon of earphone with microphone to the icon of earphone without microphone and start to use the integrated microphone in the phone) i attach image of the status bar icon
- I have tried the same earphone into another OnePlus 3 of my friend and he doesn't have the issue
- The internal microphone work good
- I'm using a CTIA earphone (in this case i use Samsung original earphone with microfone founded into an original Samsung device box)
- I have tried to factory reset the phone, clean from dust the earphone hole but nothing as changed
now i think to send phone in warranty assistance to OnePlus ...

I have the same issue, i try everything. Factory reset, change to a custom rom, etc. etc.
But nothing help. It works after a reboot for some minutes but that´s it.
Have any one found a solution for this issue?
Similar problems
I have similar problems. It started six weeks ago with the headphones that could not be detected. Then calling stopped working. Back then I rooted my phone and all the problems where gone. Until last Sunday my phone app crashed. Now all the problems are back again. I tried wiping all my data (also internal storage) and installing a custom ROM. This did not help. Does anyone have any suggestions? I really like the phone and it is still in mint condition.
Thanks in advance
