Hi there.
This seems like a giant issue that I cant seem to find any information on...
I find it absolutely mind boggling how the best tablet in Samsung's line (galaxy tab S) cant playback 4k video shot on the Galaxy S5. I mean... i guess technically it CAN play it back... but its all blurry, pixelated, and only shows maybe 2 or 3 frames a second.
Now, i've tried other video players aside from the stock Samsung Video player... BS player, MX Player, ect. Still with the same playback issues. This CANT be a hardware issue. Since the 4k videos can be played back on the Galaxy S5 without any issues.. why on earth couldn't that be the case on their tablets as well? I have shot some great 4K footage on my S5 that I would love to watch back on my Tab S... and I just cant.
Am I missing something here? Or is this just another case of "oh whoops... my bad" on Samsung's part?
I think it's going to be the selling point in their next iteration of this device ( a year from now) It's going to be a 4K screen, is my guess. They don't want to put all their eggs in one basket. They want to give you a little bit at a time.
Yeah. I see what you're saying but you would think that would be something that should happen automatically. Imagine the outrage if Apple made it so that videos shot in 1080p on the iPhone 5S don't play back on the iPad Air. People would flip.

My guess is that the Exynos SOC just can't do it.
Isn't the international Galaxy S5 equipped with the Exynos SOC instead of the snapdragon 801? I know that would be able to play back the 4k footage it shot.
Sent from my VS985 4G using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
It's on a smaller screen (mobile) without AMOLED tech.
Are you seriously saying that the international Galaxy S5 doesn't use amoled technology? That makes your 100% incorrect.

I stand corrected. I only knew of one device from Samsung that's several years old.
Haha. No problem. It's rare that I get to correct someone online so I jumped at the opportunity

please update us if you can find a suitable player for it I'd love to transfer videos from my note 3 (assuming that the tab s will ever come to saudi lol)

Technically it's one model weaker than the one in the S5.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exynos
We have the 5420, vs the S5's 5422.
Either that or they didn't bother to license the decoders? Who know?
By any chance can you upload a 1 to 2 minute 4K video to Dropbox and share it. For the life of me I can't seem to find a real 4K video anywhere on the internet. I'm currently playing around with the videos that people are having problem with on the Tab S. So far I've found the reason why and there are settings that can easily fix the playback instead of the video.

Tomorrow T-Mobile is having a sale and I have been thinking about dropping Sprint due to the price and poor service for a while. This seems to be the perfect opportunity. I have narrowed it down to either the S2 or Amaze I am having a hard time deciding. I have been reading some negative things about the S2 having screen color issues and artifacts and it being not up to the same level as the other variants.
With your experience with this phone would you recommend it or not? Also does it play mkv videos like the other Galaxy S II variants?
Coming from the Sensation...then returning the Amaze, the S2 is all over those two phones.
What about the issues like the low dpi and artifacts on the screen? Also can it play mkv videos out of the box? I have an evo 3D on sprint and I love that phone and was thinking to stick with HTC since Sense UI is so nice. I'm having a hard time deciding. I also read that it has issues producing accurate colors.

The resolution is not an issue and the screen issues are in my opinion over exaggerated. I'm not saying it isn't there but you have to look for it. Its really apparent in a dark room with the brightness all the way down.
I still think this screen is gorgeous. The colors are really vibrant.
Not to sure about the videos but I will definitely recommend this phone. Give it a shot and if you don't like it return it and get the amaze. I'm sure the amaze isn't a bad phone but this phone is just phenomenal not as buggy and troublesome as the Sensation was.

I have seen the lines and blotches on my screen, but only after reading about it on here. Its probably something you would never notice with normal use. I would definitely recommend this phone. Keep in mind coming from sprint that t-mobile's definition of "unlimited" includes soft data caps.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
I came from the epic. Only thing I don't like is the data throttling but the 4G is something you'd never see on sprint.

Also, yes mine plays mkv fine. It also plays flac and is divx certified.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
Absolutely.
After wrestling over it, I decided to get this phone over the Galaxy Nexus. I was ready to get one, but I told myself I will never pay $700 plus for a phone again, even though I almost did it. Then the no sd slot thing, blah. This phone will be fine till S3
The data cap isn't a problem. I barely use 600mb the most. What i like is the much lower bill.

The phone is amazing but network much worse for me than Sprint. I had original EVO then Photon, neither even close to GS2 in all but call drops. I drop about 20% of my calls on Tmo and only dropped about 5 during a year and a half with Sprint.

I live in nyc and the coverage seems good. I can't get a sprint signal in my apt but my friend has 5 bars with tmobile. Also 4G on sprint is an absolute joke since I barely get to use it and when on the battery drains. With tmobile I will be able to save at least $40 a month and that's a lot.
I bought this phone after having played with both the amaze and the sgs2 . I was stuck on the amaze. But i decided to go with the sgs2 because i felt sense would kill off the need for some of my widgets.
By this phone root and rom it . Done !!!!!??

I use handbrake to encode dvd to mkv. Movies look stunning on this using that encoding software and mkv format. Even with dice player and other so called mkv apps, my sensation didn't look this good.

I would definitely recommend it if your headed to T-Mobile. Minor issues with the screen but they are definitely not notable unless I'm using the phone in the dark, and for me the graininess is preferable to the bleed through on the Amaze. Other than that the phone has Web perfect. Fast, smooth and bright!

I just upgraded from the Vibrant and got the gs2 yesterday. I love this phone. I have to say I did notice the screen lines and discoloration when I was reading at night with the brightness set at auto. During the day it's fine. I was set on waiting for the Galaxy Nexus to come for tmo, but there still hasn't been an announcement and besides the 720p and ics, the gs2 seems to beat it specs wise.
I switched from Sprint a few months ago because of lack of 4G and diminishing 3G speeds (200k). I was pulling 5mbps on the vibrant and now I'm getting 11-15mbps consistently with the gs2.

I got the galaxy s II and the Amaze for the other line. I feel the Amaze has a much better quality screen and although smaller you can see more of a webpage with it. The galaxy s has some huge text and looks like it is zoomed in. The screen also looks bluish.
The t-mobile service is so far much better than I had with sprint. I can all bars in my home unlike sprint where I got none and the network is so much faster. My bill is also cut b $40.00 or more so I couldn't be happier.
I didn't realize the galaxy has no notification light unlike the amaze and the dedicated camera buttons would have been nice. I wonder if i can return it for an exchange?
Edit. Exchanged it for the HTC Amaze. Much happier with this phone with the notification light, dedicated camera buttons and the screen looks much better. Thanks for the help.
Ok so I have a Galaxy S II for AT&T and I wanted to get the Galaxy Nexus for the hardware acceleration, HD screen, and new OS so I went to Verizon today to check it out. Here is what really turned me off to the phone:
1) YouTube videos are still blurry or pixelated even though the video was in HD. The videos looked better on my phone.
2) The browser is choppy and stuttery. I went to a blog with portraits on wordpress and the Nexus was very stuttery and was not smooth like my GSII. My GSII scrolled down and up the page fine with no lag, buttery smooth.
3) The screen isn't as nice as I thought. My GSII has a lower resolution but it didn't appear that much different to me when comparing. For pictures anyways it seemed like the pictures were soft and when I compared them to my phone I couldn't tell that much of a difference.
Just my take on it. I'm disappointed because I was going to buy the phone on eBay and I was a proponent for the phone but in the end I was let down. Even more happy with my GSII now.

did you ever stop and think that the videos you see on youtube on your gs2 that look better and native 480p and the ones you watch that are 480p on the nexus might not look as good as the 720p videos on the nexus. big big difference.
It's likely the Youtube was set to low quality. My screen looks stunning. I upgraded from a Thunderbolt which had a decent screen of it's own, but this is lightyears beyond better.
The video I watched was crisp, clear, and had that HD "3d" effect you will see on high quality screens.
The browser is the most responsive I've seen on a phone yet.
The phone has quirks (choppy in some areas), but to say the screen is a reason for concern is beyond my comprehension.

people are forgetting that the Galaxy Nexus isn't the "new" flagship phone from samsung. the galaxy nexus is the "new" flagship for the Nexus line of phones. The galaxy SII is still the flagship for the Galaxy S line of phones. they both have their pro's and con's, but it is only worth buying if you are coming from a last gen phone rather than a current flagship.

No other phone has the display the Nexus has....hardware is better than ANY other phone they have.....this ain't up for debate....if you PREFER something else, so be it.....but you are definitely not upgrading to anything better than this. For every bad thing you can say about this phone, I can say five about any other device in Verizon's complete gimick line up.

Well said. (And since I'm coming from an HTC Thunderbolt, it's safe to say the GN is an upgrade for me, haha).
All the lag issues are pretty well nullified with enabling hardware acceleration.
Did the device the op was testing actually had "Use Gpu 2d accel in apps" selected in dev options? Why all the hate?
Buy whatever you want. Or can afford.

Samsung Galaxy S4 (Google Edition) goes through the rings of hell
It is a known fact that every smartphone maker tests its smartphones extensively before releasing them to market and stress tests are part of that whole pre-launch torture. When it comes to flagship phones, though, it is not just torture - it is pure hell.
In this latest video Samsung shows what the Galaxy S4 went through before arriving to market. It’s a lot. Most of the tests are automated of course but nonetheless it’s very impressive seeing the S4 survive drops, temperature changes and the elements.
We get to see the phone being smashed on, stepped on and even submerged in water for a few seconds (do not try this at home) and it survives. Interestingly, you could see that Samsung is using a Google Edition Galaxy S4 in all these tests. Take a look below.
That's cool.

Ok my poor tab pro 8.4 lte t325 got destroyed ( you know dog and kids= dead tablet) Wrong time to have left my tablet on the floor so I guess its really my fault.
Anyways I am in the market for a new tablet. I LOVED the tab pro 8.4 but don't want to buy another one as it is going to be left behind as it was replaced by the tab s. I want another tablet with cell connectivity and don't know if I should by the tab s or wait for a version 2 of it. I was hoping for a tab s with a snapdragon in it but I only get Verizon and at&t where I live. (Well at&t if I have the tablet in one part of my house)
I see that sprint is the only 8.4 with a snapdragon processor where the at&t has the samsung processor.
The snapdragon in my t325 was much more responsive than the samsung processor in the wifi tab s when i tested both side by side.
I had a at&t sim in my tab pro. Will say the Sprint version run on at&t? Does it have the antenna for it?
Now if a version 2 of the tab s is going to be out soon should I wait to see what its going to offer?
I am using my sons tab 3 10.1 for my tablet purposes (its painfully slow and doesn't connect to my samsung dongle for my tv) my daughter won't let me use her note 8
Any insite or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Matt

I don't know why people keep going on about the Exynos versions of the device compared to the snapdragon. I have the Lte Exynos version and it performs admirably. No perceivable lag, nothing that I wouldn't expect on any device.
I have an HTC M8 with Snapdragon 801, which in my mind is well overspec'd anyway, and it performs well against it it in my tests and isn't far behind it.
In any of the benchmark tests I've done (yes I know benchmarks aren't the be all and end all ) the cpu still ranks high up with the best cpu's.
The other thing is that the Snapdragon version has virtually no 3rd party support, no roms, no root, etc. Whereas the Exynos tab has plenty.
Hi. The tab s is more fragile than the tab pro. Um not sure about the sim part as i never owned an lte device. Just a heads up

Its more expensive to replace then an regular tablet. For example one hard drop can cause the screen to break completely. Its because we have an amoled screen which could break easy. But this tablet is great for watching videos in my opinion. Up to you. If you are careful then the tab s should do it for you. Its a big step up from the tab pro. Once you see the screen its just amazing! Ive had mine since july and no problems so far. If you want a better screen and performance then the tab s is a step up from the pro. Keep in mind its really thin also. Hope this helps

I agree, what's fragile, what do you intend to do with it, strap it to the bottom of your shoes? Look after it properly and use it as you should and there will be no problem. No device is meant to be dropped, same as don't crash your car and it won't get smashed up.
Honestly the crap people float about.
If you wanna secure your investment then get a otterbox case paired with a tempered glass screen protector which is what I have and I'm just paranoid that way and still careful then you'll be fine.

Only down side is one of my hobbies is photography and the pics from my camera look completely different than what's printed. The look exactly like what they print out like on my daughter's note 8 though. So my raw photo editor on this tablet does me no good.

Get a Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and a really nice case
I've been in the market for a new tablet, as my old one (tegra 2 iconia a500) is struggling to hold more than a couple hours' charge. I'm on the fence between the galaxy tabs S and Pro (8.4'')
I'll explain my usage, and what I'm hoping are not-too-high expectations. I am a gamer, first and foremost. (More on that in a bit) I haven't been on twitter for ~2 years or Facebook for almost one. I use hangouts all the time, and spend a lot of my time away from a charger. I had an s5 for awhile which made moving my PSP library from discs to data very fun. That sort of fun got me something like 6 hours of screen on time, playing PSP on 80% brightness. I hope to get AT LEAST that on my tab, without any lag of course (I do NOT use frameskip.) I already know real racing 3, shadowgun, dead trigger 2, and n.o.v.a. 3 run JUST FINE. Heck, my dual core phone can run those just as well as the s5, so I'm not even considering that those games will give either tablet a hard time.
What I'm seeing are tradeoffs back and forth across the board. I'll try to avoid mentioning what everyone knows they have in common.
Tab S- heart stopping screen, better battery life, great speaker placement, BUT... A "select few" get far too hot, and those few have warped back panels. That one makes me cringe. I had one of the "select few" s5's whose camera completely ****** itself. Unfixable. Samsung blames me.
Tab Pro- more stable development, practically same SOC as s5 (800 vs 801, I did some research) so plenty fast compared to the tab S. But worse battery life, I'm told the screen is dull, samsung seems to have dropped this like a hot potato so future support is grim (not that it matters much if you have CM) and bad speaker placement
I got to hold a tab s 8.4 and the screen blew me away. Until I found out about the exynos 5420, I thought I'd just held the replacement to my phone AND tablet. I've never seen a tab pro, but that's the direction I'm leaning in right now. I would have ended this essay at "I'm a gamer, and real racing 3 is child's play" but I think that others like me can benefit from the points I've made and what I ultimately choose.
I apologize for even having to ask you guys this question. I don't make much so it takes a long time to save for something like this. I just want to make sure I make the right choice. Please, feel free to say why/why not for the tab pro 8.4
Thanks in advance, xda.
Final note: I guess the shield is a contender also, but a "warm, faded screen", bad camera, and 4-ish hour screen time is a turnoff.
Sent from my XT830C using XDA Free mobile app
I am an Tab S owner and I own the 10.5 one. What I can tell you is that yeah it does get hot right around the camera during gaming. As far as development, the Tab S 8.4 WiFi version is getting official cm12 from what I heard. The unofficial works fine on it too with little problems. As for the warp issue, that was only affect ed on the ones made before launch. The issue has been fixed I guess since there hasn't been any reports of it since last year. Um if you keep the brightness at 50% and you play games, you'd probably get 4-5 screen on time since you said you play games. I'd suggest you look at the battery results in the tab s threads. The screen is amazing but may kill a lot of battery in your case. As for the tab pro, other users will need to report on that since I don't own it. The tab s is gonna definitely gonna have lag out of the box unless you install a custom ROM then it won't. If you have any questions about the tab s ask me. Since I own the bigger model, the 8.4 has a similar experience in lag and all that
Hey, I read alot of stuff in the forums from you, and you're pretty well-informed, I'm glad you found this! The peak of what I need from this device that a person might have laying around is metal gear solid peacewalker for psp. If you (or anyone) could rip a copy of it, and run it on ppsspp with 2x PSP resolution and no frameskip, I'll be able to purchase a tab s mostly without worry. Also, as a personal favor, could you see if a conductive metal key or something gets the touchscreen to react in gloves/high sensitivity mode? I used a crochet needle as a DS stylus on my s5, and got attached

Sorry too for double posting, but "touchwiz lag" is no problem to me. I fully plan on debloating

Hey, I read alot of stuff in the forums from you, and you're pretty well-informed, I'm glad you found this! The peak of what I need from this device that a person might have laying around is metal gear solid peacewalker for psp. Doing and downloading now. Just give me some time since my internet is slow. I'm running cm11 so yeah. As for a stylus, I don't think it works. Glove mode works well though

Get the tab pro. See 6:59 of the video below for processor benchmark comparison.

Well, the game is weird. I must have gotten a bad iso or something? I might try another game. This is what it looks like for me
Whoa. Might be a framebuffer thing. Try non buffered rendering in the top graphics option

If that doesn't work change display resolution to auto, if that doesn't work, I'm sorry for wasting your time..

Yeah. I've actually been playing for the past 3 hours! Getting addicted xD Here's a gameplay I recorded. Fps is shown as well. There only seems to be a slight micro lag in loading screens. Other than that its all smooth. There was audio cuts in the video as I was recording. But without recording its all smooth. I also shown the ram usage and switching in between apps. Even though I own the 10.5 inch model, it should still be the same on the 8.4 since the chipsets are the same. You should check out some gaming on the Tab pro BTW. Tab S gameplay https://youtu.be/ZA0zTRWRoIM
I think that sells it for me. And while you were recording? Those a15's can really deliver! When I looked up gaming on the pro, all I ever get is the usual. Dead trigger, rr3, etc.
If you're into rpg's, ppsspp can deliver more than Google play ever could. Jeanne d'arc is a fire emblem-esque game with a great story. FF crisis core is fun too. And persona 3 portable. Ah, I can hardly wait now!

Yes I was recording internally. You may need to turn on a few speedhacks to make it smooth but it works fine. Going into another app then switching back works well too since it has 3gb of ram. Of course I couldn't test any other game since it would take forever to download. So its up to you to decide! I didn't get heat because I was running cm11. I'm not sure if the tab pro is better than the tab s so yeah
I've really got a lot to think about. I'll deliberate carefully until the day comes to finally decide. I don't get new devices often so I've got to make it count

Hey! I figured out there is a tab s 8.4 with snapdragon 800, LTE, voice and SMS! Could somebody point me to a model number that gets at least hspa+ speeds on att?

There's no development for those... And att tab s models have locked bootloaders unless you get an international one. I couldn't find a snapdragon model either. I forgot to mention that the build quality is OK on the tab s but the tab pro has a better build quality.
Well, I thought I should let everyone know, I've decided. A week from today, I'll own a shield tablet. O decided to pull the trigger on one, and I'll come back and tell you all how I like it. Thanks for all your help
