Hey there guys.
I picked my Verizion LG G3 a couple days ago. Overall I really like the phone. Love the camera, the design, screen size, ect.
There is however one thing that is driving me NUTS... The effing screen. The one main selling point of the phone seems to be its main downfall. Yes, the Quad HD resolution looks sharp sometimes. There is very aggressive screen sharpening going on with the display though. It is especially noticible in Black test with "off white" backgrounds. Its easy to notice in the Play Store looking at the text and then pulling down the notification shade slightly. That darkens the background a little and brings out the sharpening a whole lot.
I know this issue has been touched on before in other posts, but I've yet to find some particular information...
I've yet to see if anyone has noticed weather this is something affecting ALL G3 models... Because i have seen posts where people are claiming to not see this effect at all.. and then others that do. I'm curious if there is some correlation between the types of G3's that seem to be affected by this, or if it is just on all G3's and people that cant see it just have bad vision to begin with.
Also, has anyone been able to get any sort of response to LG about this yet? I've emailed them, live chatted, and phoned them with no luck. The live chat rep was the most useful and told me that he would try to get the information as far up the ladder as he could and would reach out to me when he hears back.
This is so frustrating to me. It's like buying a brand new Ferrari and having a big scratch on the door. The phone is so great, but this text sharpening is making me really dislike reading on the device, and just looking at the screen in general. I know others have already returned their devices because of this, but i'm really hoping LG would be able to come out with some sort of software update to be able to turn it off. Thats the shred of hope i'm holding on to at this point.
Does anyone have any further information about this yet?

Insane.

PREACH! It only happens on some items. Its like things are compressed oddly. Anyone know if its software or a screen thing?
It has to be software. Just has to. But it's most noticible with black text on an "off white" background. The black letters have a white glow to them. Like I said above if you look at text in the play store and then start to pull down the notification shade slowly, you can really notice it then.

My play store looks atrocious!!!
For the more technologically sound people on here, what is it that's enabling the text sharpening? Is it kernel stuff or could it be fixed with an xposed module or just an app? In other words, why has no one addressed this yet? There's G3 Tweaks Box but nothing in there regarding the sharpening.
From the research I've been doing on the issue it appears it's kernel level stuff. I am by no means an expert on it. What pisses me off about this is why more people aren't complaining and getting LG to do something about it. At least respond to their customers about an issue with their product.
But if we can't get LG to acknowledge the problem or address it, then we need to start getting people to make some ROMS and address it in our own way.
Sent from my VS985 4G using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Verizon VS985 here and this issue bugs the crap out of me. Some web-pages the entirety of the text is "sharpened" but I do agree, it mostly happens with black text on an off-white background.
Testing using the PlayStore and the Notification shade shows it off but not quite to the degree that I've seen on some pages.

I received mine in the mail yesterday and wanted to give my mini review.
I currently have or had:
G1
G2
G2x
Sensation
Hercules
The reason I mention this is because this phone is not much nicer then the G2, G2x or the sensation but this phone is still solid.
I paid the outright price and coming from these phones I just cant see the difference for me to spend $560. This is just based on the feature and feel of the phone vs what I already own. If you were coming from a old phone by all means this is slightly better then the rest I mentioned but not $560 better.
Pros:
No pentile
No screen door effect (spaced pixels)
No Yellow Tint
No over colored greens and oranges
Fast web browser alive, I mean WOW! Flash sites run very well
NFC
Decent processor
Fastest download speed from Tmobile device yet
Very light
Nice feel in hand
Cons:
Defective screen (I had the pixelated, washed out /brushed steel stripes) the artifacts stay in the same place and is noticeable when I pull down the notification bar.
DPI is way to HIGH for such a resolution - Not bad but should be a option
Stutters 10% of the time
Car audio does not have the Voodoo punch from stock, not sure about later development or if a compatible chip is in there.
This phone did not blow me away but will offer it to my girlfriend over the sensation for the only reason being the GPS is terrible int he sensation and we use the navigation a lot and wanted to smash the sensation many times.
This phone is very close to being sent back but even if keeping this is being exchanged for a different screen.
Does any that bought from Tmobile have a perfect/good screen? If so please post pics.

This seems to be a pretty common, but then again we typically only hear from people who have this issue. I'm planning on heading back to the T-mobile store and compare my unit to their display models. Hopefully there will be a difference and convince an exchange.

This is my first Super AMOLED device so I'm not sure what to expect. I came from MyTouch4G before this and an SE x10i before that, and both fo them had LCD's iirc.
My friend has a Sprint GS2 and I got to compare them side by side. I noticed it's much less apparent on the Sprint one (Had to get up really close and carefully stare at it) so you almost cant tell, and when the brightness is up to about 30% it's just gone completely.
I tried to show him the lines I was talking about but he couldn't see them at all, and ended up calling me insane. So it's also the eye of the beholder.. so to speak. I don't have much evidence to go on other than what I'm seeing, and am fairly convinced it's hardware issue. I remember the MT4G had 2 different batch of screens where the viewing angles and vibrance was substantially different. This might be the same case, though I would expect more from "Super AMOLED Plus".

Based on the pictures someone posted, I find it unnerving that it's only one the right side of the screen.
It's almost as though it's hardware related in the sense that it has something to do with whatever is right beneath that part of the screen. Could it be heat related? The CPU being there? etc.
I don't remember seeing this on European GS2 when I played with it.
This is why even if the prime wasn't coming, I'd be hesitant to pick up the GS2 as the screen itself is a new line of manufacturing....and I'd rather let the first adopters deal with the imperfections while they work the kinks out in their manufacturing process.
I'm on my second SGS2 in two days. The first one was bad. Very bad. Defective screen: grey stripes, washed out colors. Extreme stuttering. Ok. Recieved my second one 3 hours ago. Great screen. Practically no stuttering.... until the first hard reboot. Bam! As bad as the first one except the screen. Laggy, choppy. Impossible to enjoy. Wtf????
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
I've noticed stuttering with the screen animations on. Once I turned them off, no problems. I've got the grey stripes, as well. If I keep my brightness around 50%, more or less, I don't really notice them. Debating on whether an exchange is in order.

Launcher Pro hasn't been performing well since Nexus S came out, and all the newer devices that came after it, like the original SGS2.
many other launchers are working way better/faster than Launcher Pro now
in other words Launcher Pro is kinda old school now, it needs to adapt to the new devices

I just came back from the T-mobile store and I'm happy to say that the exchanged device is much better in terms of the vertical lines. I'm fairly convinced that it's the nature of these AMOLED displays, only some seem to be worse than others. My old device was at ~40% brightness and it's still pretty clearly visible. Now with this new one, I can go down to ~20% without even noticing it unless I reeeeaaaally stare into it.
Make sure you test it beforehand though. I checked 2 of their display models and they both had that problem. I lucked out with the new one they handed me at random.

ok thanks. I see it now and I will have to look at my phone closer to see if I have the problem. I hope not.
ive had no probs but no phone is 100% perfect
here is the desc to a video i put up .. any s2 owner (infact pda) owner should pay attention. .
the issues with the phone and How sprint is Recalling some of these will come in my next video Yes they are Recalling Units For Special Testing>>
Sprint Samsung Galaxy S2 Epic 4g Touch LCD LED Differences etc..
First off the reason i changed out phones.
the phone wouldn't call 911 or anyone else when it doesn’t feel like it.
When you dial 911 it should put the phone in E mode thus full Control and full power and high priority on network.
(ill post a video about that resolution)
In short it just dials hangs up and you do it again till it connects.
IE the transmitter is CRAP
This call failure issue has been going on since this phone came out. (When i got it) but just got worse and worse.
sprint corp sent me this phone not from telesales etc.. (watch the other video that is coming soon about the whys etc of the replacement phones. and you will find that funny as much as interesting.
This Video shows a few things.
there is a HUGE difference in Tolerances for LED and LCD Color Binning Thus the quality of display and photos are not similar from one e4gt to another.
also shows there is something funky about the Automatic Backlight. The Unit Going back dims the LCD to much and is slow to respond to light changes in the room. (this issue was on the China Made S2s not the Korea Made S2s i had 2 of the Koreas and not an issue i had 3 Chinas and there was the isssu.
Also shows the phone going back rebooted by itself (I have seen that before)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoQaj-AM9XY&hd=1
Are you using the phone in stock form? The 911 issue was fixed long ago.
Sent from my Galaxy S II, AOKP style.
wed all like to think/hope that 911 Fix wored.
yes stock rom all current updates applied.
My new phone (left)came from Sprint Corp Inside (like VIP fullfillment) as its ESN is one of the first (Even lower than the one i bought when this first came out)
IE this is stock at the corp office from initial shipment.
(confirmed it was shipped from VIP fullfillment at sprint corp)
right fone is from local store
corp wants my phones for testing and i wasnt going into store to swap so they just pushed a fone from corp LOL>>
the phone has a known issue of not wanting to initilize a outbound call thus you have to redial to get it to go threw
your phone would act like making call then fail out right at 0.01 0.0 seconds
The galaxy s2 has an amoled screen. So it doesn't have a backlight or an LCD a screen.
What are you trying to say here?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
ya when i was doing the video i was basically going over the color binning in lcd, amoled, plasma oled etc...
IE keeping it general. Yes i know these dont have LED backlight However they do still have color bining and so other phone users could understand the binning concept.
my goal here is to let others see that there is color bining and you can get way different screens and LEDs (on the back) that are not the same and can affect color rendering... on the display and recording (if led is to white or yellow )
more of a FYI than any thing else.

Man i been trying to tell people that some epics have extra warm orangish color.
I returned 2 black epics to amazon and echganged it for white one now my screen temperature is cool-white and not yellowish.
I am sure there is a difference in the brightness and color between the displays, but for the really drastic difference with the browser (more than the rest of the UI), you might want to look at the browser settings. That app has brightness settings independent of the brightness in settings for the rest of the UI.

It is fairly common (whether its Epic, Nexus, ET4G) to see inconsistent screens. There are some lemons here and there. Even if you look in the Nexus forum you will see people complaining about Voodoo color settings not looking good and such.

Nah,im trying to say that there was probably a batch of about 1000-10000 defective black epics on amazon,so i figured i take my chances with white one and glad i did because screen is normal and looks better than black one
I remember i had same issue with iphone 3gs,my screen was yellowish and colors looked washed out.So i trade it in for another one and another one. Then reps at apple store pulled some out and they was yellow too.So they was trying to tell me that they are all like that,so i told them to look at phones they had on display, display iphones where all normal. So sense everything they had in stock was with defective yellow screen and people who was buying them just didnt know any better, they had to give me a refund.

---------- Post added at 01:56 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:22 AM ----------
btw the only difference betweeen the white and black is the screen?
I just received my Google Play Nexus and as soon as I booted it up to the first screen I could tell the display was trash. It was stupidly purple and grainy. I know this isn't normal because I've owned 2 GSM Nexi previously. Even without owning them, it's pretty easy to see something is wrong with the display. How does this get released to the public?
I really don't feel like going through multiple replacements until I get a good screen. What are my options as far as guaranteeing a good screen? Thanks.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
send it back and get a new one or flash a kernel and change the colors.
Pretty much nothing, going to have to stick with it or do a bunch of the advanced replacements or return it. I'm about to be on my fourth galaxy nexus. Even when I requested the most recent one they were bullshitting me telling me I was out of warranty when it had only been 1 week from the last replacement. I have wasted about 3hrs the past 2 days on the phone and got nothing but big fat NOs for any more returns and they told me id have to send in a repair and this was from a level 3 advanced return employee. This asshole level 3 god of samsung decided to make notes on my file saying I was out of warranty and not to advance replace my phone. He apparently was for sure that warranty was only for 14 days from date of purchase and would not listen to me. Thankfully I called a couple times more until I got connected with someone who sounded like they had the slightest amount of intelligence without redirecting me (i had to call very many times because mostmof the regular employees were seeing the notes the douche left on my account about not allowing me to advanced replace and telling me no)and ended talking to a standard employee who normally takes care of repairs/returns and she was like wtf u are still under warranty I'll fix everything in the records and send you a new one.
IMO if I were you I'd do anything to get rid of that phone without going thru Samsung. They'll bull**** you and run u around in circles and youll waste plenty of life on the phone with their garbage customer service. END RANT
this worry's me mine will be here Thursday i don't wanna have to deal with returns shouldn't have to with a 400$ phone this kinda sucks ...

i guess that ill have to do sounds like its a pia grr ill keep my htc vivid just in case now lol if nexus disappoints Craigslist it goes
I've owned two GSM Gnex's and never had a issue with the screen. I hope the one I get Thursday is ok.
I went through a single replacement with Google then returned the replacement because it was worse than the original. If purple bothers you, a custom kernel - like Trinity - will definitely fix it. However nothing can be done about grain and banding. My suggestion is return the phone and don't bother exchanging it if the latter two bother you.
I have seen a good gnex side by side with mine and I want to cry - the other has no grain or banding at all - however i just don't have the energy to fight Samsung on this and play endless exchange game, and wish I'd just returned the phone to Google and gotten something else. For the record I have two dark bands - one vertical and one horizontal - crossing in the middle of the screen, in addition to a heavy dose of grain. Trinity wiped out all purple though.

She actually saw that I wasn't out of warranty and deleted everything that was bs on the notes on my account. She set me up for another advanced replacement that nobody else would do

Touchwiz....ew. That ugly home button was a deal breaker for me.
My screen only goes purple when set to the lowest brightness. Is that the normal "purple" behavior people are talking about? Otherwise there is a noticeable snap back into the greys around 5-10% brightness.

Even if I could fix the colors (Which I doubt, they are so far off) there is an extreme amount of graininess to the screen. It's visible even on max brightness.

Mine is purple even on max brightness. I've never seen a screen this bad in my entire life.
I wasn't sure how to describe it in the title. I just got my GNex direct from Google yesterday. I noticed that what is displayed on the screen seems to linger for a bit after the display changes. It's especially noticeable on Google Play; I type something in the search bar, hit enter, and when the keyboard disappears, I can see outlines of the keys still there mostly faded on the dark "loading" background, going away after a few seconds. It's similar to what used to happen to older TVs/monitors if you were to leave the same image on the screen for a long time and it would "burn" on.
Is this something I should be concerned about? I'm not aware of mobile displays needing any kind of training period, should I give it a few days?
EDIT:

My original searching didn't bring up anything; I guess I should have tried different search terms. Looks like this is normal on AMOLEDs, the cells need to be exercised a bit.

If it isn't permanent then it is not burn in and is not a concern.

I just got my play store galaxy nexus today and I noticed this as well. From the little searching I did sounds like this is normal. That's OK still love this phone.

It's why I added the -like at the end, I know it's not actual burn-in. I just haven't seen this elsewhere. Now I'm realizing it's common on AMOLED displays.

Hey, I just got off the phone with a customer rep with LG.
I told him about the visible touch matrix, yellow tinted screen, and the hair line cracks I'm starting to get for no reason. I also told him about the screen vertical line flickering issue with my phone on high brightness. Thankfully, the man seemed very nice and it seemed like they are willing to fix the phone free of charge. Just repair only.
So what I was wondering, with he digitizer issue so common and the hair line cracks, do the employees know and just are not admitting or do they actually not know anything?

Haven't noticed any of the faults You described on mine G3 (D855). Bad unit maybe? Mine's going really strong, nothing wrong with screen, no visible lags (after disabling thermal throttling in secret menu), battery life could be better (as always), otherwise, I've got no complaints.
My phone is nearly a week old now and i check for em cracks nearly every day. Without being offensive to anyone who works at customer service usually the people are completely clueless when it comes to things. It is just like people who sell pcs in my country and phones they usually have not much of a clue. Saw a guy selling phones the other day a woman asked him where the sd slot is and he seemed helpless. Ahaha..
My guess is someone somewhere at lg knows but not all of them are informed.

Even if LG knew, their customer service reps would be instructed to not give any sign that anything was wrong. The last thing a company wants to do is promote that there may be a problem with a product they make. They only admit it when they have to.
But I don't think there is anything wrong with these phones, we've already established in other threads that you're too picky.

I would think that anyone with a problem screen or especially a cracked casing has every right to complain and they are far from being picky.
I will add that I have no problems that I can see with the hardware of my G3, software wise I think it could be a little faster but that screen is something that has to be seen to be appreciated. I was a bit sceptical about how much better the screen could be over my M8 or Nokia 1520 but it really is.
It's gotta be said, and please remember, I'm only joking, but you probably cooked your poor phone with all those disabled high temperature settings.
On a serious note, I've not had any of the problems that you are reporting either. And as I said in one of the threads all those settings are already disabled on the v10j rom I'm running.
They arent issues, it's just how it has been built.

Simply put, I want to get a phone that stands out from the crowd and is unique to itself. The G3 is exactly that. At the same time I willing acknowledged that the first batch of phones may be faulty but I bought it with the intention that if any are faulty I will just exchange the phone until I get a proper functioning one. But right now I have decided to wait it out a couple of months until I send it in to LG, so that they have time to work out all the production issues.

3rd G3. The first one had dust under the display. The 2nd one was faulty right out of the box on the counter. I didn't even have to tell the employees anything. The third I got stuck with a yellow tint display.
So I basically exchanged my phone once legitly if you don't count the one that was faulty out of the box. Now stop staying stupid BS like I'm being picky and start doing your own damn research. Allot of people are having the cracks on the side issue....all it is, is just a simple Google search. And I obviously am not the only one to have a display with a yellow tint and visible digitizer. Allot of people have reported it. Lets not be ignorant.

I'll make you a deal, I'll stop calling you picky if you stop creating threads like this about your personal issues with the G3. We all get it, you had issues. No need to keep creating new threads whining about it.

What my threads are doing is helping people become aware that they potentially may have faulty devices. And if they do nothing about it well....$600 down the drain?
You obviously don't know anything about mechanical devices.....even the slightest issues and improper manufacturing can affect the life of your device. And if my thread helps people become aware of issues that are present and may become worse, I'm perfectly happy. Unlike you I willingly acknowledge that my G3 and so many others are having issues. But that does not mean I get to bash it. Just make people awareth that the issue exist so they don't flip out.

Stop moaning and get on with it.
There's no matrix or screen texture. The problem with these phones is with lag and stutter not screen texture.
Maybe there's a few quality controls issues but I'd guess LG don't care too much as the G3 is..."outselling the S5 three to one..."

That is one of the dumbest statistics I've seen... it is selling 3x more than a phone that was released earlier in ONE country.
The G3 is expected to sell about 10M overall, which is good - but a heck of a lot LESS than the samsung...
Selling 3x more my arse. Lol.
I guess the cavaet was in South Korea. I missed that bit off

Don't get me wrong, though. I like my G3 much more than the couple of S5s I tried.
hellokitty goes cry cry again. LOL
even if it reaches the 100th exchange phone you aren't going to give up on G3 right? hahaha
common sense to do for us is if we still get a faulty unit on the 3rd exchange then we will ask for a refund to buy another phone and not be a crybaby here in the forum, thus end of story.
most of the people here have got good units. you seem to be the luckiest when it comes to defects be it real, nitpicked, imagined or hallucination. lol
Can I mod lock this it going to go south real fast
