Scroll Lag (former IOS user) - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, Ive been wanting to try out Android for a while and I just made the jump to the G3 because I LOVE the screen size to form factor ratio.
So pardon the Android NOOB question but I notice a TON of scroll lag on the G3. In Facebook, Chrome, Firefox (though less), Tapatalk, Textra, Email. Just about everywhere you can scroll I have seen stuttering.
Is that what people mean when they refer to "lag" on this device?
Is this specific to this device or is this more of a general Android problem?

Scrolling lag is due to the LG skin that they put on top of android. Its not android itself but the OEM that put their custom interface on the device.

I disagree, I believe its because of the SOC used. The S801 is primarily a 1080chip. It is pushing its limits trying to render QHD screen therefore performance is taking a hit. To get the performance on QHD of a phone like say the M8 (probably the smoothest Android phone to date), you need the S805 as a minimum (check Anandtechs S801 and S805 QHD comparisons).
At the moment you'd be looking at 1080 Android phones like the M8, S5 and Z2.....even the Nexus 5 for IPhone like performance using the current generation of Qualcomm chips.

wrong. else they would have gone with the 805. i switched to nova launcher and havent seen one single lag..u will only feel the difference when playing games

I also think you're wrong. Tapatalk and Facebook are both laggy apps, even on the 1080p phones. Firefox has scrolling that can also come off as laggy.

There are some simple fixes.
A.
1. Nova or apex launcher
2. Uninstall all of the carrier apps you can.
3. Enable ART in developer options (tap build number 7 times in system software menu)
And or you can do this to further help out:
B.
1. Root
2. Debloat (remove apps that you normally cant in titanium backup)
3. Enjoy

It's not the size of the hardware, it's how you use it.

I've seen this argument now 100 times over that you should not consider WP7 or have anything to do with WP7 due entirely to the fact that the hardware is 'last-gen.' Well, I'm standing in the store with my DVP along-side an Atrix and I've been doing some similar and even the same apps and games between the two and the DVP seems to be doing much, much, better. Of course the UI on the DVP is 1000 times smoother regardless of hardware but that's a given due to the lack of a hardware accelerated UI on android. The iphone is smoother in some of the apps due to microsoft's stupid 30 fps... thing but the OS on the DVP is even smoother than the iphone. I have to give the iphone credit though due to it's underclocked nature it's barely beaten by WP7 in terms of UI and smokes WP7 in terms of apps. If the UI wasn't so ugly and the hardware was a little less limited it would be the only valid choice in my opinion. So yeah, just the fact that there are dual-core processors on some android devices doesn't mean anything if it can't properly utilize them. I guess that was the whole point I was trying to make.

Hardware acceleration is there, its been there for a while. Do some research. You would see the devices wouldn't be useable without it.

If anything, you should've talked about the fact that it has nothing to do with dual-cores in general but due to the fact that the Atrix is a mass of poor coding.
You could've also stated that dual cores generally make the phone use less power and be more efficient leading to better battery life.
Instead, I have to ask, what the hell can a RAZR do faster?

Hardware acceleration is there, however the UI is not GPU accelerated which is why android is generally laggy. I've done my research. I'm aware of what dual-cores do but it's supposed to make it faster as a big part and hey... it's not much faster due to the UI itself. I can't even imagine how powerful an iDevice or a WP7 device would be with that under the hood but the only thing that's been selling android for awhile is that their hardware is bigger and badder.

but you can see improvement in speed, fluidity, and general handling of the A5 over the A4 and dual-cores make it possible for higher resolution output (the Evo 3D will output 1080p via HDMI) as well video decoding and things that actually utilize it. The motocrap UI sucks no matter which device is using it I don't care if they put a 6-core i7 in there.
The thing is that WP7 is behind with no front facing camera on any device, and last gen snapdragons. It's just a fact. The iPhone 5 supposedly has the same dual-core A5 with a 4" screen and will SMOKE any WP7 device for at least a year or more.

Really think they'd go up to a 4 inch screen... hey, it may be a worthwhile phone then... The size of the processor is entirely null on android though, the UI isnt going to speed up because the coding for android in general just isn't that hot. WP7 is still the smoothest UI out there on a "last-gen" snapdragon. I would like to see a front facing camera considering there were rumors of windows video chat back in January but really the hardware despite being old utilizes the hardware better than android utilizes it's most up-to-date hardware. There will still be no GPU acceleration unless the OEM codes it in themselves on a device to device basis and considering that the OEMs just want to slam device after device to sell as many different devices as possible that's highly unlikely.

Depends which phone, the moto crap UI sucks, I hate touchwiz, but AOSP is smooth and so is stock sense, I'd put up my CM7 ADW launcher or my Desire ROM against WP7 any day of the week and It's just as smooth.
Android is different in that the manufs have to code their own framework except the Nexus series so it can be hit or miss, WP7 is all MS so yeah you know what you're going to get on any phone, but if you get an Atrix and hate it, you can return it and get an Incite and get a whole new awesome experience with Android on actual 4G.

Eh, I'm sorry, I've tried the latest devices T-mobile had to offer up to the MT4g and regardless of CM or whatever it was still slow in comparison to WP7 and I feel that won't be resolved until the OEMs decide to make the UI GPU accelerated. I still have a G2 and with the latest and greatest roms it still can't compare, nor can my moms MT4g with CM7 on it.

matter of opinion then, I compared an MT4G and an HD7 side-by-side and the MSM chip in the MT4G makes a big difference, it was much smoother and lightning fast, so it's just subjective on that point.

To be perfectly honest I haven't been particularly impressed with HTC's WP7 devices... they're slow compared to the other OEMs and choppy... I hate using the HD7 after using the DVP for a few hours. Internally they're pretty much the same and I don't know what the difference is but HTC's general lack of quality shows.
WP7's smoothness is mainly in the default applications and system software. If you test a lot of apps on WP7 you see that, that smoothness is not truly apparent in most 3rd party apps which is unfortunate.

Certainly not in the iphone ports but in a number of the apps built exclusively for WP7it's apparent. I just wish they'd stop being a "We have that too" group instead of innovating.

way to compare last year's phones to those coming out later this year (rumor is a fall release).
hell, the DS7 has a dualcore processor, does that make it a top tablet?
^ for the price it does. Mine is super fast and smooth.
Well, there aren't many tablets out right now, but I wouldn't say it's tops.
It has a low res screen which really helps it perform better, compared to other tablets and the only other tablet that was out at the time (Galaxy Tab, I'm speaking Google-endorsed tablets) had phone specs with a large screen...
WP7 would have benefitted from using a better SoC at launch because phones are sold mostly on 2 year contracts and, well, a year after release there will be tons of polished Dual Core phones. Also, since all WP7 devices are supposed to get updates future proofing them at least somewhat would have been good for the platform as a whole, and customers obviously.
It will be interesting to see how many updates these launch phones recieve after Mango, IMO.
I think dual core is not a big deal. A well managed single core processor is more than enough for a phone... unless you want to run two processor intensive apps. But if you think about it, do you ever run such apps simultaneously? All modern phone OS put an app in hibernation when you switch to some other processor intensive app.
There have been a few different points or comparisons made in this thread. Here are my 2 cents on it.
iPad2 performs so much better than iPad... the majority of the improvement comes from a very good GPU. Apple is very good at using the GPU and thus the difference is obvious. Nevertheless, tablets are very likely to be used to do processor intensive tasks simultaneously. Thus dual core can be utilized to its potential.
The barrage of android phones with dual core.... google's flagship device, Nexus S is single core. Google is going to stay with it for some time. I have been using Nexus One for some time now and I have not come across any instance where I was bogged down because I was running too many simultaneous apps. Sometimes a processor intensive app alone can slow me down, but that is due to android not being able to use my GPU to its full extent.
Thus, I agree with OP. The experience is what matters. Phone is not a PC where comparison can be made by merely comparing the hardware specifications. I think chassis 1 of Windows Phone 7 will get updates for at least 2 more years. Nevertheless, we should be seeing dual core windows phone 7 in early 2012.
Dual core is not about speed, it's about efficiency. You clearly weren't in the PC evolution era when we went from single core to dual core. Single core was still beating dual core in every benchmark, but the dual core was cooler/used less power/required fewer fans/apps that were "not responding" did not bring your entire system to a halt/etc.

I'm quite aware of this however speed is not entirely out of the equation. It's not like it's doing any huge favors still as smartphone batteries barely sustain the smartphone and it will likely be that way til we get those new solar-recharging things on the screen.

I agree with you. Dual core brings better power management. I did not sleep through the PC evolution. However, the discussion in these thread repeatedly pointed out advantage of speed. I begged to differ and laid out my arguments.
Nevertheless, I reiterate that unless you have two processor intensive activities running in parallel, you will not see any advantage (including power consumption) of multiple cores. My point is that you hardly do that on a phone.
PS: "apps that were "not responding" did not bring your entire system to a halt" has nothing to do with multiple cores. It's sand-boxing. Only Unix based systems can do that effectively. Windows has been getting better but the kernel does not support all the features.

I'm very impressed by the device.
But analizing that I don't think I'd be so keen to buy it if it wasn't for ICS, In much the same way that iOS5 makes the iPhone4S.
That said, I'm loving the curve of the device, I always found the one on the Nexus S to be too deep, but the Galaxy Nexus seems to look perfect with it.
I know it's not Sammy's way, but some aluminium would have been nice, I guess thats just a personal preference. Lets wait and see how good this Hyper-skin is
Lack of a beatiful UI and clean uniform patterns has always been a gripe of mine in Android and I'm very excited to see everything coming together for the first time.
the inline spellchecker, keyboard, new notifications, swipebetweens are what I liked from 4.0, but the phone itself is meh =\ No SD card slot, 5Mpx, expensive carrier, meh chipset, and no hardware navigation buttons are enough to turn me off. I can't believe how good the phone is despite the fact that that it falls short in key areas =[

Why is this?
I'm liking how they're virtual.
Slightly disappointing that they're there at all, have you used a Blackberry play book or MacOS Lion, the gestures on both of these are fantastic and I'd hope that android would more to something similar in the future
From what I've seen, the package certainly looks very impressive. The screen looks amazing...super AMOLED is already awesome but now in HD! Wow.
The dual core 1.2 ghz CPU is standard...the fact that its a Texas Instruments rather than Exynos is not a biggie for me. They are both comparable...its all about software optimizations in the end.
5MP camera is good enough...more megapixels does not necessarily mean much after 5. Ram is standard 1 gigabyte which is very good.
Now onto ICS. Very impressed from what I've seen again. It looks a lot like honeycomb for tablets which is good. It looks quite smooth and fast.
I've read somewhere that GPU acceleration has been confirmed to have been implemented but I'm not sure. I've not read any official confirmation of that. Perhaps someone can clear it up for me here. If it has then great. It was my number one priority for ICS.
Overall, there seems to be a lot of new features in ICS but only hands on time will tell. It certainly looks great. Smooth and very Fast!
The hardware of the galaxy nexus is awesome i think. 32 gigabyte storage is also important. I do wish however that they had included an SD card slot. But I'm sure 32 should be enough for most.

Honestly i dont understand the craziness about quad cores. Aside from 1gig of ram and standard 1ghz dual chip i could care less about quad cores in phones.
I'm not having a go...i mean really, what would one do with a quad core phone that one couldn't do with a dual core. Software optimization is the key now i think.
Aside from high Res graphics for certain games i do not see the fascination with quad cores and dual gpus etc.
There comes a point where the specs cannot really add much more to the overall experience anymore. I think we are getting to that point now. The software is gonna be the most important aspect from now on i think. We finally have incredible powerful hardware, but there are still lags and slowdowns etc.
These wont change with quad cores or double tripple quad dual cores or whatever. What is needed is software optimizations. Optimizations that fully take advantage of the available hardware. Only this will fix our lags and slowdowns and enhance our usage of mobile computing.

Software optimizations, and for battery technology to finally catch up with transistors...
i'm not a gamer, the specs are secondary to the handset itself for me. i'm still gaga over my nexus s and it's "pedestrian specs".

I will have to hold and play with the the device to get a feel for the size. Coming from a Nexus One the Galaxy Nexus seems huge. Right now this is my main worry.
I don't care about Mega-pixels. The performance of the camera, lens, and image processing software is far more important. I want clear pictures, good indoor/low light, minimal shutter lag on start-up and between shots, and a flash that actually works well with the camera (i.e. intelligently controls output based on the shot details). It's hard to grade the device yet on these items.
If Google finally put deep rooted GPU acceleration into the OS and made it so that developers don't have to jump through hoops to use it then that will be an awesome change. The iPhones have often had lower spec hardware but buttery smooth performance due to software optimization and solid use of the GPU. I really hope this is real for Android.
I've posted elsewhere but I think lack of an SD card is a conscious choice because I don't think Google has worked out the kinks with SD cards post-Gingerbread. SD card support still isn't that great in HoneyComb. This could be a win for the user experience and since I can live with 32GB I'm not marking it down for this item.
I liked the improvements in Ice Cream Sandwich, especially the attempts at making the interface more consistent. Having home screens navigate left-right but having the app drawer navigate up-down never made sense. These screens look too similar to work differently. Putting widgets in a tab in the app drawer and making their addition to home screens consistent with apps also makes sense.
No hardware buttons is nice. I have a Honeycomb tablet and having the buttons move with the screen when going from portrait to landscape is nice and again adds consistency to the user experience. Once you get used to it having buttons fixed in portrait orientation like on current phones seems awkward. Also having the buttons change with the context of the application is a nice feature.
Anyone hear of any improvements in VPN support, specifically Cisco AnyConnect. So far it has only been available for certain phones due to tunnel driver issues. It would be a nice addition to the Galaxy Nexus since the HD display would make Citrix Receiver or other business apps easier to use on a phone.

FYI. ICS does have hardware acceleration added. See android.com for ICS features.

In terms of performance... a OMAP Dual-Core 1.2 GHz should a ****ing BEAST. So... quite enough. I was hoping for 1.5 GHz, though.
In terms of design... I need to look at the model later when it gets released... the color and the dock dots seem a bit off.
The buttons... I hope that CM or other teams are able to make ICS render other buttons (like a 4th search button, or at least change the icons, they look too honeycomb-ish).
ICS looks great. That message response to call thingie sounds like a great feature.
NFC sounds like a neat feature too because you won't have to go around menus to send someone something... as long as they have a NFC device too. With ICS. The new wallpapers look great too, I guess. Not to speak about Hardware Acceleration!!!
Overall, I still gotta wait. I'm also going to wait for the usual price cuts that happen after 4~5 months of release to get it, if I am going to get it. Or I might wait for the next Nexus... hopefully Motorola isn't going to **** it up.
I was no timpressed with the screen on the TMo SGS2 to start with so I just pre ordered the Prime...
As far as number of cores go, I woulkd rather see mor edevelopment in battery technology.

Fully agree!
I don't care for these numbers, they are nothing worth.
Once AOSP ROMs pop up and devs start to meddle with everything, the X will be *the* benchmark phone.
And yes, numbers doesn't mean anything. My highest benchmark number made on my HTC Desire was made with a Sense ROM, yet I find Oxygen and CyanogenMod *a lot* faster than Sense for everyday use. So it means nothing.

Congratulations, you found one of the few use cases where all four cores are used.
I have owned the transformer prime tf201 for a month before returning it, and was not massively impressed by the tegra 3.
Under honeycomb it felt virtually the same as the tf101, apart from home screen navigation. The browser was horrendous and considerably worse than my galaxy s2.
On ICS the whole thing was a massive improvement, but sadly the browser (any of them) was still not as good as the ipad2, and even the galaxy s2. I suspect in most cases, the qualcomm s4 will simply feel faster (and browsing in particular im hoping).
Tegra 3 was VERY impressive for media playback though and games aswell, however, there are barely any games on the market that the adreno 205 can not handle let alone the 220/225.
Adreno 220 in s3 was bottlenecked, 225 in s4 should be a lot better and close to tegra 3 gpu.

android default browser is always nonsense even for snapdragon device and opera is a tons better (or other alternative) it might be an asus problem

I returned it cause i couldnt afford the the £500 to keep it, especially when i know there's a £200 version coming soon! Under ICS it was very useable, but had some notorious bugs, like random reboots. The only real alternative is the ipad, but the aspect ratio renders it useless for media playback, so you are right, the tf201 is the only acceptable tablet out there.
Opera at the time didnt work that well in either honeycomb or ICS, but was amazing in gingerbread. I returned it before chrome beta came out, so cant comment on that either. The default browser has overall been very good since ICS, and i suspect this will be the case in any ONE S/X configuration.
The web browsing was acceptable with ICS, but didnt quite match the galaxy s2 or the ipad2. The galaxy s2 was that good that it made my ipad redundant and I eventually sold it. You'd never guess there was a quad core behind the tf201 when using the internet browser. It never quite looked as good as the only other ICS device, the galaxy nexus.
Overall I was really looking forward to tegra 3 and was left a little disappointed, and felt that perhaps the A9 was just not that good overall. I hoped the revised tegra 3 is a lot better. I was really looking forward to the s4 as well and am again disappointed that it is only comparable with the tegra 3. I may have to wait for the 2.5ghz quadcore version!

i'm not interested in GPU power but more in efficiency per watt...
maybe too early to know exactly, but i would like to know:
Would the One S combination (S4, Adreno225, qHD, 1650mAh) be more power efficient (i.e battery lasts longer in normal everyday use) than the One X (T3, 720p, 1800mAh).
normal use: 1-2h display usage, browsing, mails, phone, camera, sms

the reboots you speak of are attributed to software problems and early T30, the revision only solves problems with the silicon, allow 200mhz extra, nothing changed in architecture

I'm using Asus transformer prime for last 3 months and I think its the best pad right now. It replaced my iPad 2. Tegra 3 is fast at everything. Especially with ICS.
Can hardly wait for One X.
There is nothing better for multitasking than T3 right now. And I use it quite often on phone too.
Companion core should bring good battery life too.

I have the AT&T variant of the samsung galaxy note 4 and thought I would post over here in the T-Mobile section to see if anyone here has had a chance to mess with this app.
Let me start by saying I already know the app is an alpha and that even though in the app's description on the play store it states this app will run terrible on all devices, I have noticed it runs better on the nore 3 than the note 4...
It is for that reason that I am particularly interested in seeing if decreasing the display resolution using nomone resolution changer or any other resolution changing app to 1920x1080 or even 1280x720 yields any increase in performance. There are videos of it running on the note 3 which has me stumped since I expected the 805 to at least outperform the 800 and the only limiting factor I could possibly think would cause for worse performance on the note 4 is display resolution (which shouldn't in theory matter when using opengl es 3.0 as it allows for selected rendering for internal resolution) or simple lack of driver support by qualcomm for the adreno line.
The developers of dolphin have already stated over the course of its development that the qualcomm chipsets have terrible driver support and that they greatly prefer/recommend the Nvidia tegra k1.
I guess I would like to know if anyone with root can try running some gamecube/wii games at a reduced resolution using both opengl es 3.0 and software rendering and report on their results. Unfortunately the AT&T Note 4 root prospect is looking grim atm and I would love to know how the note 3 is outperforming the note 4 but without root I can't accurately test it.
I get 10 to 14 fps in ssbm when the intro is playing, but as soon as I press start, the game drops to less than 1fps at the press start screen. That seems to pretty much be the norm with all of the games I have tried.
I have tried reicast and ppsspp on this phone and both run phenomenally even when rendered at the note 4 native resolution 2560x1440 which to be honest still blows me away.
I am sure there are tweaks and optimizations available to make it at least run a little better.
Please comment and provide feedback/experiences in a friendly manner

I haven't tried Dolphin emulator but here's something I remember seeing. The 805 in 2k resolution performs roughly the same as the 801 in 1080p resolution. Take that as you will but if both were the same resolution, ie 1080p, then the 805 would kill the 800/801.

You are correct.
That was what I was reading before the US Note 4 was released, it was based on benchmarks which could go either way when it comes to performance accuracy.
My thinking is this:
If dolphin is rendering at 2560x1440 despite the internal rendering resolution being set to 1x native, then dropping the phone's display resolution should greatly improve performance.
I could of course be wrong though and I have no way to test it yet

What controller(s) do you use? I've been thinking about getting the Moga Power controller for some OTG emulation with the Note 4. Although nothing will take my love away from my nvidia shield.
I'm on Sprint on the echo rom and I've never used app settings from xposed to change dpi of dolphin. I'll try that after work and report back

I bought a phonejoy for most of my emulation and gaming needs, the form factor is pretty cool but functionality wise it has its quirks like the right analog stick being permanently inverted.
I made a DIY gameklip using a sixaxis dualshock 3 and a hanger that I use for more hardcore gaming sessions. Video of it can be seen here:

We have a T-Mobile note 4 developer on the AT&T forum right now that seems to be making progress on root for the AT&T Note 4 which is pretty exciting.

The buildbot just reset when it went over 1000 or so entries, so it is back to 0 as of today. I think the previous builds should still be accessible on the main website somewhere but any new ones should still populate on this link going forward.

Update: I verified from Sonicadvance1 the developer for Dolphin that the adreno 4xx line of gpu were not detected properly in the coding for the android distribution of Dolphin. The developer says he will add it which means we should see some progress.

The shield tablet doesnt work because of the nvidia tegra 4 chip and how it handles graphics
The note 3 can run most games at half speed so the note 4 should do fairly well once the update is released to allow the glbuffer
Lets see how it runs once the minor fix is released to allow full opengl 3.0 support

The shield uses the tegra 4, the shield tablet on the other hand uses the tegra k1 which has a 192 core Cuda gpu, and is in fact faster than the note 4, however it is not much higher than the note 4 in benchmarks and the likelyhood is we can get decent performance given the performance seen on the note 3.

I thought he was talking about the shield portable and dolphin will not run on tegra 4 at all
as for the shield tablet some games are reaching playable speeds which is nice.
I am hopeful that the note 4 will provide some sort of speed boost over the note 3
someday this may be playable once further optimization is done.
I will be waiting for the update and i will provide gameplay videos for comparison

Had I not specified the exact version I was referring to, I could understand getting what I meant confused.
Just so we have a firm grasp on where I am coming from, I know for a fact that Nvidia worked with Dolphin directly to help with running on the Nvidia Shield Tablet, so I am making an educated prediction that Adreno devices, which have been known for buggy GLES 3 drivers, will not run as well. Ipso facto, poor on Shield tablet then poor on Note 4.

That is true, I suppose I am just an optimist.
That being said like others have stated it runs on the note 3, perhaps not playable, but better than the note 4 currently which leads me to think once this change is implemented the note 4 will surpass the note 3 in performance which is what I am sure we were all expecting from the note 4 out of the box.

I should also warn you that setting GLES 3 on the Note 4 breaks Unity games. I found that one out today trying to debug why my game is broken on Note 4 and nothing else. Qualcomm may be a better target for any dream of updates that fix functionality. For your sake, I hope that one is a Unity issue. G'luck.

dude.....dude.......dude.. I love you omg. I spent like a whole week doing exactly what you're doing now. my ssbm intro record is 16fps, by playing with some hacks in the settings. after into game either crashes or goes to less than 1fps. I bet you're the one who I saw posting questions on dolphin forums, and on that dudes YouTube video.

No idea how to find that link normally but I've been hanging onto it in my gKeep.
I know with root you can do some edits that'll make dolphin run better (says one of the dolphin mods).
I too was amazed old note 3 with a year less of development runs better than note 4 with an entire year of dolphin optimization.
kinda silly but running dolphins was one of the things I told myself could justify me buying the note 4 over the s5.

I spent like a whole week doing exactly what you're doing now. my ssbm intro record is 16fps, by playing with some hacks in the settings. after into game either crashes or goes to less than 1fps. I bet you're the one who I saw posting questions on dolphin forums, and on that dudes YouTube video.

No idea how to find that link normally but I've been hanging onto it in my gKeep.
I know with root you can do some edits that'll make dolphin run better (says one of the dolphin mods).
I too was amazed old note 3 with a year less of development runs better than note 4 with an entire year of dolphin optimization.
kinda silly but running dolphins was one of the things I told myself could justify me buying the note 4 over the s5.

I brought the issue to the attention of Sonicadvance1 on page 2 of the thread https://forums.dolphin-emu.org/Thread-the-note-4-and-dolphin and have since been waiting for said change to happen.
I am also aware of the YouTube video showing the note 3 in action hence why I made this thread in an attempt to determine what is actually causing the problem. The problem is entirely on dolphin right now and I suspected that there are a lot of people silently accepting the fact that it doesn't work, simply on the premise that they are told to expect it to not run which is why I made this thread to create awareness and see if anyone else was in my boat that could help test and figure out the problem.
Honestly when I found the note 4 thread on the dolphin forum it was already an off topic dead topic, so I wasnt expexting such a quick response from the developer. It was a nice surprise to learn the issue is what appears to be a simple fix in dolphin.
Now it is just a waiting game.
Also, just from reading the changes made in the buildbot, I suspect those changes are intended for the Linux version since some of the changes are notated regarding features not present in the android version such as d3d.

SD821 Underclocked in pixel devices

The pixel XI and the pixel are packed with snadragon 821 chipset wich supposed to be clocked at 2*2.35 kryo & 2*2.0 kryo but both pixel phones are clocked at 2*2.15 kryo & 2*1.6 Kryo which is exactly the same as SD820 on Lg G5 and the s7 so if someone knows what is the difference between the cpu in the pixel phones and the regular snapdragon 820 please write it down
From what I have read the 821 is a 820. The 821 is just higher binned 820. When they make chips they are not all the same. Some just are a little more efficient than others do to very minor differences in the chips. So a high binned 820 can handle a higher clock speed while using less power are turned into 821.
So Google decided they wanted to go with the 821 because it is more power efficient than a 820. But it seems Google thinks the speed of the 820 is fast enough to provide a good snappy user experience. So they are doubling down on efficiency by clocking these high binned chips down to the same as the 820. So say the 821 is 5% more efficient at stock speed over the 820. The 821 might be 10% more efficient at the same clock speed at the 820 while delivering the same speed as the 820. So they are sort of doubling down on efficiency over performance.
From the hands on I have seen everyone has described the phone as very fast. This is likely due to Google optimizing Android to run on the pixels hardware. Much like Apple does with the iPhone. Also the Pixel has some hardware features that might not show up on a regular spec sheet. It has some improved touch screen latency and faster storage. Because of these factors Google decided they don't need the extra performance of the 821 but instead want to utilize it's efficiency.
TLDR Google is going all in on the Pixel proving a very fast user experience while being power efficient!
So in theory once kernel source has been released we can just OC it back to "stock" frequency and get even faster performance with a hit to battery life.
I have the OP3 and the phone is clocking to max. frequency very rarely anyway. So there is no reason to clock it down for better efficiency.
So basically the pixel xl nd the pixel have snadragon 820 with a different name and better efficiency, as a result the gaming performance is the same as on the lg g5 or the s7 for example, these pixel devices arent worth the extra 200$

The smaller Pixel has the potential to out do both of those phones and the Pixel XL in gaming since it has a native resolution of 1080p. The lower the resolution, the higher frames per second possible in games when using the same SoC, assuming the game is made to run at your phones native resolution.

In the current climate and with the 810 fiasco overshadowing can you really blame them for dialing it down? Perhaps the GPU is still clocked higher in the 821 and I'll take the efficiency as a perk. It's up to you what's worth $200 more but there are a few more bits less talked about included in the price.

I'd rather have 1080p at 60FPS than 2k at 30FPS on a screen that size, however I think most games, at least the big titles, have adjustable resolution so I think the only difference will be battery draw.

I agree, I wasn't aware you could choose your resolution in mobile phone games as I don't really play demanding games on my phone, I assumed it was like mainstream game consoles where the developer predetermines the resolution or just sets it to use the native res by default.
I play games on PC, so it's pretty cool that you can change the resolution on mobile phone games like you can on PC games.

As I understand it android has the capability and it's up to the devs to implement. The game can be rendered at whatever resolution and will then be upscaled. for example Warhammer Freeblade allows you to select which resolution to use and texture qualities just as you would in most PC games at the risk of losing frames however Need For Speed No Limits selects a pre-defined profile depending on device.
As I said, underclocking doesn't automatically mean better effiency... If you would have a 820 phone you would know that. I experimented a lot with different CPU settings on my One Plus 3 and underclocking is not worth it because it only cuts of performance but does NOT increase effiency because your CPU is using max frequency like 1% of the runtime anyway... In more than two days 2,15 GHz on the big cluster was used only 49s on my OP3.
And that the 821 reaches a higher frequency doesn't automatically mean that the CPU has a higher quality. I know it would be possible that the 820s are only bad 821s that don't surpass quality tests but I don't think so because the 820 was released much earlier. Usually it goes the other way around, like on GPUs. Nvidia first releases the very high end models and then sells the crappy GPUs in the lower end models. I don't think that Qualcomm is like, hey we are picking out all really good 820s and pile them up to sell them as 821s... A 821 could be better and more efficient but it's not necessarily true. A good 820 could still be as good or even better than a 821, regarding effiency. Also think about AMD Processors a few years ago, whole cores where unlock able and there was still room for OC if you were lucky.

When talking about efficiency I'm referring more to undervolting as appose to underclocking, it may be the case that they have chosen those frequencies because the 821 steps up in voltage beyond that point thus increasing power consumption and heat. We'll have to wait and see how the Pixel performs, but if that underclock means the thermal load is capped lower we will also see less throttling, ideal for daydream.
As an example I would refer to overclocking desktop CPUs, the architecture is different but how it responds to heat and power is not. beyond a certain frequency the CPU requires exponentially more power and generates exponentially more heat the higher you go.

It might be only to reduce the heat. The battery efficiency is, IMO, very marginal.
But I will surely put back the 2.4GHz on mine.

For some reason idont believe in overclocking, cuz it's beyond the device capabilities and it might cause some problems.
This seems a very big piece of marketing by Google. It isn't really an SD 821, its an SD820.
The 821 only has a 10% performance increase when clocked at its max frequency, so even if Google did leave it at its max frequency, a 10% increase would be barely noticeable, if noticeable at all in real world use.
The 821 does have some features that aren't available on the 820, which is why Google probably chose the 821 over the 820. I found this info about two important features for the 821, that's not found in the 820 and quoted it below.
"One of the main reason why Google used the Snapdragon 821 in the Pixel phones is the Snapdragon VR SDK (Software Development Kit). This is entirely unavailable with the Snapdragon 820. The new SDK comes with advanced VR toolset to give the developers broad access to the internal architecture of the Snapdragon 821 chipset. This is extremely useful and fully compatible with Google Daydream platform. The VR SDK helps in the rendering of cutting-edge visual and audio which helps in state of the art Virtual Reality experience."
"Another important thing which is unknown for most people is about the camera improvements brought by the MSM8996 Pro. The SoC can simultaneously use two phase detectors for significant improvement in focussing quality and time. On the contrary, the Snapdragon 820 or MSM8996 only supports single PDAF (Phase Detecting Auto Focus) systems. The newer chipset extends the range of laser autofocus technology. That's a very incorrect statement. The kernel determines the clock speed. Google could choose something like 0.5GHz if they were so inclined. The phone would run like ****, but in your eyes, the device is not "capable" of anything faster. It sounds like Google purposely underclocked these. If nothing else, you are absolutely 100% fine to clock it back to the speed that Qualcomm, the OEM of the chipset, intended it to run at. True overclocking can present problems, but I have overclocked my CPUs, RAM, and GPUs for YEARS with no issues and reaped plenty of extra benefits in terms of performance. I used to do it on my smartphones too, but it is pointless and wastes battery for almost every use scenario.
Google specifically chose 2.15GHz instead of 2.4GHz as specified by Qualcomm, either due to heat issues or battery life benefit. I am going to guess they realized that their incredibly light and optimized software does not need a 2.4GHz CPU speed - hell, my 6P is faster with a SD 810 than my Note7 with an 820 in day to day use for a reason, that reason being stock Android is incredibly quick and efficient.
That is true from the chip standpoint. What you don't know, though, is if google/htc designed the heat removal system to handle the additional heat produced at full clock speeds without throttling...

The phone being a uni-body aluminium shell should help with that. My 5X gets mega hot when I run games or for extended screen on times, but the back is plastic. I think using the whole surface of the phone as an additional heat-sink so to speak could help with heat dissipation.
Either way - I hope someone tries to OC it back to "stock" qualcomm speeds. I will certainly try to see the results, that is, if custom kernels can be a thing with the Pixel.

Deny the power of stock android, but there are many other OEM custom skins that are well optimized and are plenty fast such as sense and Lg ux 5.0 and even the oxygen OS
