[Q] Writing to External SD Card - Titanium Backup - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I can't seem to make my external SD card the location for my TiBu backups. It says that the folder is not writable.
I'm using the externalSD card folder from within the storage folder. Any ideas on how to make this work? I can already write photos and other media including LG backups to my external SD.

I was having a similar issue with a different app and installing the application linked to above solved it.
Did you actually install and reboot your phone, or are you just assuming it will not work?

1) Installed SD fix
2) Rebooted
3) Tested TiBu - no dice
4) Uninstalled TiBu
5) Rebooted
6) Installed TiBu - still no dice
7) Checked /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml, it is correctly set up per various instructions on Web
My other apps (camera, etc) can access SD_ext without issues, but TiBu is just being stubborn

Hmm interesting... I do have an orange folder in /storage that says it is not writable. I set the backup location to /storage/external_SD and ran a backup for the first time. It completed without any issues. I did confirm the data was actually written to the folder as well. Are you using this same path for your backup location?

Had the exact same problem, it apparently has something to do with permissions.
This fixed it for me:
1. Use a root-enabled file manager, navigate to /system/etc/permissions.
2. Edit platform.xml and find the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission.
3. Add an additional group definition for this permission (under the other tags in this permission): <group gid="media_rw" />
4. Save the changes to the file.
5. Reboot.

Can you offer any additional info? Have to used Root Explorer or a similar app to confirm without a doubt the files are gone and not just in a different place? And I am slightly confused when you say "move to sd card" because internal storage and SDcard on this phone are the same thing since there is no EXT..
I copyed files as usualy from computer to the nexus
After the copy (I copied the new google apps zip) this zip is ont the storage, but all other 12Go of data in the card are disapeared
I try to find it with windows, root explorer, es file explorer, I tryed android undelet tools and windows undelet tools... noone can see the MTP memory of the nexus .......
And I disabled the upload to picasa..

Do you have fast usb charge enabled? If so, try disabling that.
all files in /sdcard disappeared
The same thing just happened to me. I copied 386MB of music to /sdcard/Music and all appeared to be fine. I used Windows7 x64 Explorer over USB mounted as MTP.
I noticed that I could not copy some files back to Windows from Nexus. After messing around with that for a while I used ES File Explorer to check out /sdcard. Only a few folders were there, as if /sdcard were newly created. I could still see all of the lost folders in Windows Explorer.
Am I screwed?
TIA!
This is from a corrupt MediaStore DB. I ran into something similar when moving files to my phone over WiFi using File Explorer. Afterwards only a handful of folders showed up when connected via USB. Only way to fix it is to reset the DB. Settings > Apps > All > Media Storage > Clear data/cache. Reboot. It should completely rebuild the DB after the boot, and things should show up correctly again.

That did not get all my data back, I must have done something else while trying to fix it. The good news is that this fixed one of my next questions: How do I reset the Google Music album art? The suggestion above fixed that wonderfully.
Thanks!

[Q] Another "sdcard\0" thread..

Soo, I know there's a lot of these threads around, but I can't find the answer I'm looking for. I'm wondering: After I flashed 4.2 I got this extra "0" folder on my internal sdcarrd. Can I just cut/paste the content of the "0" folder back to the original sdcard root? or will this have a negative effect on the storage?
Regards.

I had this issue earlier so i moved everything back to the root folder and deleted "0". If you are planning on flashing a few 4.2 roms i suggest you use the latest TWRP recovery or wait for the updated clockwork recovery because everytime you flash 4.2 roms they automatically create a 0 partition so you will end up with 0/0/0 etc depending on how many you flash
K, thanks!
I think I'll just copy the content of the "\0" folder back to the root, and stick with the ROM I'm on now. Then I'll update CWM when an update is released.
Aaargh.. I'm getting kinda pissed now..
When I try to copy the sd-content back to the root, it says that the device has stopped responding, or isn't connected. Can you tell me what is the standard root folder for the sd-content?
After installing a previous backup the was still a 0 folder so I copied all of the files to the root folder however it made the pictures unable to view

I've tried several methods to move my clockworkmod folder out of the "0" folder to the sdcard "root" to no avail.
I'm currently backing up everything from "0" to my desktop. Once that's done, how can I push the clockworkmod folder to the sdcard "root"?

Seems like there are some problems copying big folders over to the root. Try to first copy the CWM folder from your PC into some folder on the sd-root. Then, from your phone, open up a file explorer and copy the CWM folder to the root. Pretty weird, but it looks like it's working for me..
Edit: Yupp! worked for me. Hope you'll sort it out aswell.

What file explorer did you use? Every one that I've used takes me directly to the "0" folder when I hit "sdcard" thus I can't seem to paste the clockworkmod folder into sdcard root.

move it to /data/media
---------- Post added at 12:26 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:11 AM ----------
here's how it works
before the virtual link to /sdcard was /data/media
cwm was writing under /data/media so cwm folder would show up under /sdcard as well
now the virtual link to /sdcard is /data/media/0
that's because of multiuser (even if multiuser is not working on phones)
cwm is still wriyinb to /data/media so cwm golder eoll mot show up under /sdcard
solutions
1. to copy cwm foldrr on pc: move cwm folder from /data/media to /data/media/0 that is to /sdcard then attach phone to pc and copy folder from sdcard
2. to restore from a backup on your vomputer: attach phone to pc, create cwm folder on sdcard andcopy h erebackup folis, copy cwm foldef from /data/media/0 into /dara/media
it is normal to have a /data/media/0 which means /sdcsrd
it is not normal to have /data/media/0/0 which means /sdcard/0
the latter happens on your second installation etc.

I haven't updated to 4.2 yet because of this sdcard/0 issue I'm reading about
I don't care much about what's on my SD card besides my Nandroid backups so the only thing for me is: can I restore a backup from CWM if I move the "clockworkmod" folder from sdcard/0 back to the root of the SD card?
I assume there's no other adverse effects of all our files and stuff being on sdcard/0 instead of just sdcard root?

read my commeny above: yes, although cumbersone, yes
I'm thinking this is the appropriate thread to post this so here I go. I flashed the newly released 4.2 rooted stock image and there were a few problems :
1. I forgot to delete the cache/dalvik cache, which created a bootloop and completely messed up my device, and I had to wipe/factory data reset from the recovery to fix it (in which case I had to lose almost all of my data)
2. I accidently overwrote an existing nandroid backup of the previous (CM 10 stable) ROM I had made to restore just in case anything happens, so I was out of options to restore my nexus to a working state. I finally had to use the crashed ROM's nandroid backup using an advanced recovery so I had my photos, videos etc intact. I got it finally working but anyways,
3. I restored my apps+data using titanium backup. I wanted to go back to my CM10 backup which I had made using ROM manager and it was still present with the rest of my data. But when I selected the backup which made, the device restarted and gave me an error stating "SD CARD MARKER NOT FOUND" :crying:
Now I'm unable to restore or even make a new backup with ROM manager. And to add, I have like three folders for storage using up too much space on my sdcard :
1. root/sdcard - I have no idea where this came from but it sure has an awful lot of my files copied there
2. root/storage/sdcard0
3. root/storage/emulated - has two subfolders : 0, legacy
All of the above locations contain the same exact files and I just want my nexus back the way it was. I know I can flash CM10 right away but I just wanna get some help on how to delete and make changes to these added folders by properly moving the files without crashing the os.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I am having this issue as well and am very very annoyed. Please help. Thanks. I cannot get into recovery manually or otherwise. Keep getting Andy with the red exclamation mark in his chest and must remove battery to reboot.
Fu#k rom manager and CWM use TWRP an rom toolbox pro an you will be fine on 4.2 JB.

Update: got it working.. had to flash back cm10 stable, move files around and get back the old ROM manager backup and restore it. Its fine now. Not to mention the 4.2 ROM was pretty unstable on my nexus, causing several reboots and sometimes it froze (especially when I connected it to my desktop) and I had to remove the battery and put it back in to get it working. Moreover the 4.2 rom screwed up the file system, making my nexus' SD card unreadable on any desktop. It just wouldn't install the drivers whatsoever. I'd wait for cm10.1 than try any other custom 4.2 from now on.

You can download Root Browser Lite from play store, which gives you complete access to the root of your phone and internal files such as system/.

new /0 after every new ROM flash

every time I flash a new rom I get a new 0 folder. Right now I have my titanium backups on /0/0/0. Wtf google??
How to solve this?
There are many, many threads on this.
Thanks for the solution.
U need to upgrade to the newest clockwork mod or twrp. They both have the fix for that now.

This problem has been fixed in TWRP 2.3.2.1 here so ensure that you are running this version not an older one.
Or you may download GooManager from Play Store then install the latest TWRP recovery from it to ensure that you get the latest version

Yup! I'm on 2.3.2.1 which is the latest for the VZW Gnex (toro) and I still have that 0 folder problem every single time I flash a new 4.2 ROM. I even move all the contents of /data/media/0 to /data/media such as my Titanium Backup folders and it simply can't find the files. I noticed every boot up the 4.2 roms also make new "Android" and "Music" and "Movies" folders and when you delete them, the browser, gallery and other things won't work. This is very frustrating. I've searched high and low and I seem to be finding the same answer. Make sure you are on the latest TWRP and that'll fix the problem. It hasn't. Any other suggestions?

Actually I have a GSM GNex and I can confirm that the 0 folder problem is fixed with me using the latest TWRP (2.3.2.1). Check here for the thread of TWRP at the Verizon section maybe you can find why you still have the 0 folder problem
Regarding Titanium backup, this software is great and you can choose where to let it look for the backup instead of the regular /sdcard/TitaniumBackup/ location. All you have to do is:
1- Start/Run Titantium Backup
2- Go to Settings (the three upper right vertical dots)
3- Select "Preferences"
4- Under "BACKUP SETTINGS", click the first option which is "Backup folder location"
5- Click on "DETECT!"
6- Choose "SD card"
Then automatically it will search your SD card for the Titanium Backup and display it all for you.
Hope this helps

If CWM is unable to find the nandroid backup because it is moved within the new 0 folder(s), then here is what I have done when I was in the same problem :
1- Download any file explorer (I used ES File Explorer)
2- CUT (or copy if you have a lot of free storage) the "clockworkmod" folder from within the 0 Folder(s) and paste it to the main /sdcard/ location, so both the 0 Folder and the clockworkmod folder will be at /sdcard/ location now.
3- Reboot into recovery and CWM should find the nandroid backup because it is back to its correct place as it was before being moved into the 0 Folder.
I recommend that you make a copy of the clockworkmod folder to your PC before attempting any of the above steps just in case something went wrong while copying or cutting (moving) the folder so you can try copying it again. In other words, make a backup of this clockworkmod backup
Hope this helps

Oh sorry for misunderstanding you earlier.
I haven't encountered this before but you may try a file explorer which has a search function (such as ES File Explorer) so you search for "clockworkmod" folder or something in the whole sdcard. I hope it will find the backups for you this way.

How everywhere did you get? They must be there somewhere...
Did you try under
/mnt/sdcard
? That's the actual directory, the various others are symlinks to it.

/mnt/sdcard is a symlink. The physical file location is /data/media (or /data/media/0 in 4.2 and higher).
Edit: Specifically, the physical internal storage is found at /data/media.
/data/media is fuse mounted as /mnt/shell/emulated.
/mnt/shell/emulated/0 is then symlinked to /storage/emulated/legacy.
/storage/emulated/legacy is then symlinked to /sdcard, /mnt/sdcard, and /storage/sdcard0.
So the files seen in /sdcard are files physically located at /data/media/0. As such, files in /data/media can use space, but not be seen when looking in /sdcard.

Did you do your nandroid backup using CWM? If yes, then it will not be compatible with TWRP.
Did you use the latest TWRP 2.3.2.1 ? If not then your nandroid backup should be in sdcard/0/ after flashing PA with android 4.2 so TWRP will no longer find it. You have to copy or move the TWRP folder from within "0 Folder" to the main sdcard/ location then TWRP will recognize it again. And remember to update your TWRP to the latest version to avoid this problem again.
I hope I have covered most of the possibilities regarding your case. If not then please provide more details

So I just got the chance to flash a 4.2 and like I said it created a new 0 folder under data/media/0. I deleted the 0 folder so I would only have data/media but when I go to open the browser it doesn't do a thing. Even the gallery. And when I reboot, I see it creates the same folders I just deleted. What gives?

I have no idea why your TWRP on your verizon GNex is not helping you get rid of these 0 folders. I checked the changelog of TWRP 2.3.2.1 for the thread at the Verizon section and the Original (GSM) section and they are identical!
Anyway I have never deleted or do anything to data/media/ even for 0 Folders. I used to move the data from within the /sdcard/0/ location to /sdcard/ then delete this 0 folder on the sdcard, nothing else. I checked my 4.2 GNex now and yes there is a 0 folder in data/media/ but this is not affecting my sdcard and how apps like Titnatium and TWRP are finding the backups and related files.

Code:
<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" >
<group gid="sdcard_r" />
<group gid="sdcard_rw" />
[COLOR="Red"]<group gid="media_rw" />[/COLOR]
</permission>
7. Save it and set permission rw-r-r
8. Reboot
Note: If any problems occur just delete platform.xml and restore the backup file.

Your device needs to be rooted
1. Open any files manager of your choice and make sure it runs with superSU/superuser permissions.
2. Mount your system partition as R/W to perform any changes.
3. Navigate to the /system/etc/permissions/ folder and look for the platform.xml.
4. Make backup of platform.xml.
5. Open the platform.xml file with any text editor on your device and search for the following line:
Note: If any problems occur just delete platform.xml and restore the backup file.

to be honest I don't really understand what you're saying.
I did all the steps and now all the 3rd party apps (eg: titanium backup, airdroid) on my LP Z3 could write on ext sd card.
Sent from my D6603 using XDA Free mobile app
I can also write to the SD card, but music and videos are corrupted.

well let me put it clear what this this tutorial will do.
If you try to copy songs or videos from your PC via airdroid (which is 3rd party app) to ext sd card, kitkat rom or above will prevent it to happen. After you did this tutorial, kitkat rom or above won't prevent it. If your songs or videos get corrupted the problem are (might be) the files. I've tested it myself and nothing get corrupted.
thanks bro for the tut.
i used sdfix in kitkat, and in lollipop too when update, but everytime i restore app from TB (i make backup folder location in sd card) always got bootloop.
i don't know if sdfix isn't compatible yet with lollipop or not, so i don't instal it again.
now i use your tutorial, and everything works like a charm :good:, but maybe for now i wont make backup folder location in sd card, at least now i can use xposed obb on sd card

btw, si agan orang bandung?

you could try editting it in notepad++ and then push it back inside system.

I used NEXTAPP SDFIX app from the Google Play store. It took about 5 seconds. Must have root. No issues.
Im on a Z3 D6616 with OEM 4.4.4 locked bootloader.
Man, this is awesome. I don't like installing apps to do this kind of things.
THANK YOU
Edit: I'll keep testing the apps, if any trouble show up I'll tell you.
Doesn't work on my xperia z3 stock rom 4.4.4.
Followed the instructions succesfully but after rebooting i still cant move apps to sd.
That button isn't there under app info in settings

Have you already made a check on platform.xml after the reboot, if the changes you made (see startpost no. 5. and 6.) are really saved? Did you already check the permissions of platform.xml as per description (rw-r-r)? If yes, reboot your device again and give it another try!
Just install this application, it makes this whole process.
Obviously, you must have root access.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix
Thanks.
Nice work.
I tried doing it with the SD fix app as well as doing it manually with a root explorer.
Neither works.
I can see that the file is succesfully saved and the permission is set to rw-r-r- but nothing happens
Worked for me, thx for the tutorial

[Q] Cannot delete files from external SD

Using ES File Explorer Pro, I get the prompt popup to allow permissions to delete from External SD when I try to delete something, but it just errors out with "Task failed"
Anyone know how to solve this without root? Worked in Nougat

Is what you're trying to delete something that was on the card prior to putting it in the S9? Also, can you create a folder with ES on the SD card? I ve tried deleting an empty folder on my SD using ES with no problem and I can create and delete folders on it. I'm trying to remember if my card was formatted in the S9 but drawing a blank.

Nope, it appears I have no permissions other than read on it (At least from within ES File Explorer Pro), but connecting the phone to a PC I can copy and delete from it fine
The files I am trying to delete were copied from PC to S9 Ext SD mostly, some are from S7 but no difference with permissions, although there are some on there that we sent to me via S9 WhatsApp and some created in S9 photo editing apps, so not sure how they ended up there without any write permissions unless the problem is ES itself
had that on my 128Gb sd card. It appears it had gone read-only ... for good. dead card for me try on a computer if you can delete a file or if it's also read-only

Yea works fine on a PC, or with the phone connected to PC
OK so I found a post on another Android forum from way back in 2014, someone with the exact same problem on their S5, one of the replies suggested that this is a Samsung restriction and that only their "My Files" file manager app can delete from external SD, so I tried that and it worked fine
Yet some of you say you have full permissions with ES File Explorer to write/delete on EXTERNAL SD? (Not the internal storage)

Yep, I made a folder and deleted it then I found an epub book Moon Reader had placed there and I deleted that also using ES Explorer Pro. You probably checked this but when you look at ES in Settings>Apps>ES File Explorer Pro>Storage, do you have a box at the bottom under for "allow access"? I ask because I have a box there for "Deny Access"

I don't no, I just have CHANGE for changing where the app is installed, either Internal or External

I was hoping that was it. In ES Explorer's settings under storage I have that DENY ACCESS box at the bottom.

That probably is it, but why wouldn't I have it?
Mine looks identical but without that box
Which phone is that? S9?
Asking because even the wording is different, mine says Internal Storage, yours says Device Memory
Right, it's the S9 and the install of ES Explorer is just a straight install, nothing fancy done. I think you're right though, we're possibly looking at the cause,

Seems very strange that the wording for internal storage would be different between two S9s with the same app installed, cannot see how that would be possible unless the firmware was causing it
Maybe firmware differences have changed some SD permissions, I'm running the latest O2U firmware BRE5 May 1 security Patch

Could be since I'm still on the Feb patch. I thought about clicking that "deny access" box but I'm afraid it won't repopulate with a "allow access" box. I guess you've tried moving the app and data to the SD card to see what that does. I did move mine to SD and back to internal and it still works.

Yea same result on internal or external and nothing new appears on the info panel either, maybe one of their amazing security updates has blocked SD write permissions then, not really a big fan of this, why would an SD card be blocked for stuff like that? Obviously if we put an SD card in our phones it's because we want to read and write to them
One more suggestion if you haven't tried it. Pop in another SD and try it, preferably one you can format in in phone.

Yea good plan, I`ll give that a shot at some point, atm I've just re-enabled "My Files" for when I want to delete something, no extra steps than opening ES to delete something really, unless I forget and try to use ES first :silly:
Found the issue, I had disabled "My Files" stock file manager as I don't use any other file manager than ES, but it turns out that ES requires that to be enabled to give ES File Explorer External SD card permissions, for some retarded reason
Enabled it, tried to delete a file, it asked the same permissions question, except instead of just saying "Failed" this time, it opened My Files and told me to select the External SD card, after which it deleted the file successfully
So ES File Explorer Pro is so great it requires yet another file manager to work properly

Huh, didn't know that. I always just ignored the stock file manager so I guess that's why I never came across that.

Yea I just disable what I'll never use so it's not crowding up the app drawer / taking up resources running in the background 'just in case' I want to open it at some point lol, Android is dumb
They swear apps sitting in the background take up no resources, but they do, they swear those apps will give back those resources when requested by active apps (Thought they did not take up any resources? )
I have tested many times the opening speed of an app that is sitting in the background vs 100% closed, and it is an unnoticeable difference
But anyway back on subject, yes, ES File Explorer cannot work properly on a Samsung without the stock file manager being active
Ok, I just used Package Disabler Pro to disable "My Files" and it didn't affect ES, I was still able to delete an entire directory on my SD card.
