[Q] Project : Ubuntu Desktop Nexus 7 2013 (flo) - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hi guys,
have been thinking for a while now and decided to do a port of the Ubuntu Desktop Core for the new Nexus 7 one for the old one already exists so i propably only need to modify a existing kernel for the Nexus 7 2013 to work withe the Desktop Core of Ubuntu right ?
But i only have experience with linux already booted but not with its booting process and even not at all with android and its booting process. Therefore im asking you guys. Interested in joining my project ? I cant do it myself but together we can.
I think we need to look at both initramfs the one of Cannocial and the one of Google or Cyanogenmod to find the canges we need to make right ?
Is there any kernel you can recommend ?
Somebody interested in helping me out ?
Btw. I'm german
Thx

[discussion|support|F.A.Q] Porting Ubuntu Phone OS to Defy(+)

Well this thread is dedicated about the possibilities of getting a port of ubuntu phone os. Recently displayed and would be launched around MWC 2013, Ubuntu OS will be launched for galaxy nexus! .
although there are short threads present about the topic, aim of this thread would be to provide Support/Bug-Report/F.A.Q if any port of ubuntu shows up for our phone from our great developers.
This is refreshingly new OS.
HERE IS THE LINK TO THREAD--> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2174544
I am damn sure some-one will take up this great job
Latest: Ubuntu Phone OS Porting Guide https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Porting
Some of Features of ubuntu phone:(taken from wikipedia)

What kernel version is it based on
will it require bootloader unlock ;-(
UBUNTU PHONE OS
since it is yet to be released this is an open discussion, if any developer takes this project for defy, this thread will be a F.A.Q/support/Bugreport thread (if ever it happens )
i'm here for tests.
i'm not a developer, but you guys can count with my defy+ for tests. I really would like to have ubuntu phone on my defy+.
I'd love to see Ubuntu Phone OS on Defy. First of all it's based on Android kernel so there wouldn't be much difficulty for it. The sources should be out next month. Also we'll need to find a method to dual boot with a custom kernel because it's less likely for someone to use it as a primary OS.

Will be very nice to see ubuntu working natively on ours Defy but the specification for minimal resources is beyond the possibilities of defy. So it can be ported but will be very laggy IMHO.

Not that beyond. Min specs (as stated here) only ask 4-8GB internal storage for an entry-level ubuntu phone, everything else (CPU clock, minimum RAM and multitouch capability) already cover our phone. Plus, as far as I remember (though I can easily be wrong on this, since I haven't touched an Ubuntu machine for months, now), this OS (specially considering it was specifically deployed for running on phones) doesn't take more than 2GB when installed. Again, I can be wrong, BUT... What about multiboot? A class 6 8GB card (or even a class 4, like the one included with our phones) may do the job, and we will still be able to boot CM10+ and ask silly questions to Google Now.

I may be wrong, but I think I read in more than one place it'll be available as a flashable zip. Since the folks there at Canonical were able to boot this little beauty in a Galaxy Nexus, and they intend to release the GNx version (without many workarounds needed to install) before the end of january, I think it's pretty safe to bet on a recovery-flashable zip file. Last, but not least, I think an install script (like the ones devs use in current Android flashable zips) may be slightly modified to install Ubuntu from a system image, specially if you consider Aroma-based installers are doing wonders in matter of personalizing Android installations. This not considering (and in this matter I have absolutely no idea) the possibility of the disk installer of linux distributions be already running scripts very similar to those used on Android flashable zips to install desktop OSs on computers. Devs will be better suited to tell about the latter.
P.S.: if anyone there tried Android-x86, you guys can see the installable image is very similar to an Ubuntu (or any other linux) installation zip. This might lead us in the opposite direction, looking at which modifications were made for the installer to work with Android, and reversing them for a Ubuntu installer to work in a flashable zip.

Is nice that you are very optimistic with this. I wanna be so but ... the entry level processor is a Cortex9 ! which is more powerfull than ours and Ubuntu is based on 3.4x kernel and necesitate a bigger system ROM to install (ours is ~350MB). Anyhow will wait and see and ... speculate.

It may depend on how far our devs will be able to strip down the OS for our phone, I think we may not require full fledged running desktop compatibility but it still depends by what extent we can strip down the footprint!

PwnPad 2014 Community Edition ROM for N7 2013 now released!

Hello xda members!
So i have just learned that the Community Edition ROM for the PwnPad 2014 from the great guys at Pwnie Express is going to be coming out this month -> February 2014.
If you are unfamiliar with the PwnPad project here is a link where you can find out all the information about it -> https://www.pwnieexpress.com/penetr...ity-assessment-products/sensors/pwn-pad-2014/
Now for those of you who don't know the PwnPad 2014 is using the Nexus 7 2013 where as the PwnPad 2013 uses the Nexus 7 2012.
I was hoping that maybe we could start a thread and keep it here for people who are planning on installing the PwnPad 2014 Community Edition (CE) ROM onto their Nexus 7 2013 tablet.
If you are looking for a great alternative an amazing guy who guys by the handle BinkyBear over at the zetaboards forum has created a project which he calls Kali PwnPad. His ROM is an amazing project for those of us who are interested/love internet security and penetration testing. I have written a very detailed tutorial on how to install Kali PwnPad onto your Nexus 7 2013 which you can find here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2577356
Kali PwnPad doesn't only work for the Nexus 7 2013. Binky has written a universal installer so that it can be installed pretty much on any android device but his kernel has only been written for a few devices such as the Nexus 4/5 Nexus7 -> 2012 and 2013 and the Nexus 10. His kernel supports usb wifi devices such as the ALFA AWUS036H, TP-LINK WN722N, ALFA AWUS036NHA, and the rt2800usb chipset just to namea few!
His kernel now supports bluetooth which i have tested and confirmed that it works with the Parani-UD100-G03 from sena.com and you can get the ubertooth-one working in the kali linux chroot environment. Ubertooth-one currently works in kali linux in a terminal or in a vnc session. I am currently working on getting the ubertooth-one working in a true android environment.
So back to the Commnity Edition ROM for PwnPad 2014...
So i wanted to start this thread for when the ROM is official released, which according to the twitter account from Pwnie Express they are going to release the CE (community edition) ROM for the PwnPad 2014 this month!
I figured we could use this thread as a starting place for questions or how to's on getting the 2014 CE PwnPad ROM working on the Nexus 7 2014. Hopefully we can find a way to install this ROM on the Nexus 7 2013 through multirom. I know that using multirom will be very important to a lot of people, including myself, who may not want to use the CE ROM as their main ROM on their Nexus 7 2013 device.
Okay so this is a start so if anyone here has an information or suggestions please let us all know...
As we eagerly await the release of the 2014 Community Edition (CE) PwnPad ROM for the Nexus.
I will do my best to stay on top of this but i do get busy like everyone else. I could really use help on this to keep us all here at xda posted on any announcements or releases from the great guys at pwnie express.
Hopefully we won't have to wait too long for the release of their rom!

This is great news. I am currently studying computer forensics, and carry Kali, and backtrack5 r3, (on flashdrives, attached to my keychain) for my netbook. I feel the best way to learn forensics, is to study antiforensics. Being able to dual boot pwdpads custom Kali ROM on my n7 would be awesome, I've ran various Linux distributions in a chroot on my tablet (even have Ubuntu touch in my multirom manager) but always encountered one problem or another. Hope this happens soon, so I can put my USB otg y, and external WiFi card to good use.... Unrelated to my study's but still fun.
PwnPad 2014 CE ROM release!?
Hey everyone so i was just checking out the download page on the pwnie express website and there appears to be a download link for the 2014 PwnPad Community Edition Rom -> http://sourceforge.net/projects/pwnpad2014/
If anyone has anyone success with this ROM especially in multirom please let me know!
I tested it
I downloaded the Pwnie 2014 image from their site last night and got it running on my 2013 nexus 7.
The install was super simple. They packed it with a script so all you need to do is run the script. You need a physical Linux box(not virtual) preferably with Ubuntu 12.04 and the Android-SDK(or at least fastboot and adb) installed. I did backups of both my Binky-Kali-CM11 and my internal ROM in TWRP first. Everything gets wiped so make sure you back up your ****.
I played with it for a while. It has a nice user interface and everything seems to work fine. It did crash a few times though, once when I ran macchanger, and another time when I was in wifite. It is packed with jellybean. I think I am going to stick with Binkys fabulous ROM though instead. Or better yet I am going to see if I can some how backup it up and load it in to multiROM so I can have all three(Binky,Pwnie, and Internal)
I will keep you posted...
Oh BTW!
A HUGE THANKS to DROIDSHADOW for the stellar Tutorial~! and Binky for the Kernal!
Happy Hacking!

When you installed PwnPad 2014 on your Nexus 7 2013 tablet did you have TWRP recovery manager installed on your tablet or did you have have the stock recovery manager installed?
I have TWRP recovery manager installed and i just setup my Ubuntu 13 box so before i start i just want to know if having TWRP will affect the installation of PwnPad 2014 CE ROM
I hope to hear from you...

Sorry for the delay.....
No it should not affected it. I had TWRP installed when I did the CE install and it went fine. In fact I think the script uses TWRP to install CE.
Side note.....I was thinking that if we just did a backup of the CE ROM in TWRP we could then just restore it along with binky and the internal. Then we could have all three in multirom and boot any of the three anytime.
I agree with you though.... I like Binky's ROM a lot more than the CE. So I played with CE for a day and went back to Binky.

[Q] What is OS PORTING

In simple word, porting means to make a application or patch or os compatible with some other hardware or on some other platform.
Example: You have Android L preview image for Nexus 5 and you want to install that preview image on Nexus 4 then you need to decompile the Nexus 5 preview image, remove modules or drivers related to Nexus 5 hardware and replace them with that of Nexus 4 and many more step so that in the end you get an image that is fully functional with Nexus 4. Then this is known as OS porting. If you made an exact replica of some application that is working in iPhone for Android Device then that is known as application porting
Senior member, please correct me if I am wrong.
