Hi guys
Apologies for this basic question but im trying to determine whether or not you do need an SD card or not to start putting on custom ROMs??
I have just upgraded from HTC One X and that didnt have an SD slot, but the internal storage was partitioned i think so i was able to just put zips onto the SD partition and do it that way.
Is the M8 the same or is this a phone where I definately need an SD card as there is a slot for one??
Ive done a bit of searching but cant quite find the answer.
Thanks :good:

when i want to change my sd card (that already rooted) to a better one do i it just how to copy and paste it over to the new one? and it wont mess up the root right?
You didn't root your sd card you rooted your phone. Don't have to do anything special just change card like you would anything else

so, if I change the card, what happens to all the files on the original card used for rooting?, don't I need that on the new card? I have an inspire 4g rooted with coredroid. I'll appreciate any comments!
You don't need those files any more, cause your phones already rooted.
If you want to keep any files, you can use a card reader or just through your phone copy all the files to your computer than copy them back to the new sd card.
Also, why are you posting in the G2/DZ section if you have an Inspire?

It was not my intention to post here to bother anyone, I was just looking for the specific topic and thought it would apply to any particular phone. I actually didn't even see this was for other devices, I just found the info I needed, and thanks to you Nipqer, everything is much clearer now.
No harm done, I was just wondering why you would post here out of curiosity.
Glad I could help.

Swapping Sd
Ok so I have trasfered alot of apps to my sd card. Im assuming if I change sd card that those apps wont work anymore or be on my phone?
Im thinkin I can just send back to phone then pop in new card and transfer them again. Just transfer whatever other stuff I need from my card to the new one lile ROMS PICTURES im sure that all the apps will create its own folders and directories again, so I guess my only concern is the apps being on the card?

Just use a card reader to copy all the files from the SD card to your desktop computer. Then copy them to the new SD card. Your apps will work fine.
Hi there,
I hope someone can give me a little advice on this matter as I can't find the answers I'm looking for so far.
I have basically flashed my first rom on my dhd using ace hack kit to root and s-off my device and make a goldcard as it was locked to t-mobile. Everything has worked fine and I flashed runnydroid no problem at all. Becuse It was my first time flashing I used a new 8gb sd card so I could start fresh. I have filled this sd card up really quickly and would like to swap it for my 16gb card I am wondering if this will cause issues with the gold card and other files.
If I clean my new card can I just transfer all files over from the current sd card can I just carry on or will the card need to be partitioned and so on? Can someone just give me a heads up on what I need to do?
Thanks in advance

You should be fine with the goldcard thing! If not just redo the process. HOWEVER! When you move the files from the old SD card to the new one remember to take ALL the files. Including hidden ones. Very important!

You can format your SD card after doing the rooting. You can make gold card any time. If you still sceptical about this keep all the files somewhere safe. Specially the file start with "part7" which contains important information regarding partition when stock ROM was installed. This is most important file, rest you can delete IMO. SD card doesn't need any partition, just format it with FAT32.
Be gracious, hit "Thanks" if my post helped you.
Hey all,
Today I've finally unlocked my bootloader and installed DoomKernel. So far it's amazing.
I do have a question though, it's about the SD Card. There's so much junk on my SD Card, I just want to clean it up but what would be the best way to do so?
Is it really as simple as My Computer > Right click Phone's SD Card > Format?
Or are there some system apps I should be wary of?
I've tried some quick searches with no luck..
Thanks in advance!
I suggest use SD Formatter 3.1
You will feel the change !
Nevermind, solved.
Heya,
I just received my repaired HTC Desire Z and seems they reset it and removed (and stole -.-) my SD card.
Now until I have a new SD card, I already wanted to try and root it again. But is that possible without one? Guides say that I need one with enough capacity but can't I use my internal space with 1GB?

(Evil people.) No u can't, u don't have access to this memory, even when u connect the phone to ur computer, u will not get any popup. When u will try to push something into the phone though ADB, it will say something about sdcard not mounted.

Yes You need an SD card, it's the only area of memory that you can store files to be flashed/restored/backedup/etc as rooting/flashing etc is going to wipe that internal memory anyways depending on which action.
Did you least notify them that they did not provide back an SD card?
But yea you'll need to get a new SD card for you to do anything recovery/rooting/etc wise.
Well I'm quite sure that I won't get my SD card back since it was the HTC repair center and I guess it is a standard procedure to remove SIM card and sd card before resetting anything. I was warned by the shop with the sim card but guess he forgot to tell me about the sd card. Gonna try it but well...
Anyways, can I borrow an sd card from a friend, root my smartphone and give it back afterwards? Or are the files on the card required?
Nope you can use the borrowed sdcard and then not use an sd until you get one. Any files put on that sd are not of use for the most part after root. You can save them to your pc and download them to your sd when you get it if you'd like but you'll be fine with out them as well

Hey everyone,
I've been looking everywhere to get some help with a problem I have with my 32GB SD card.
I'm using an Xperia Play (R800) rooted, unblocked and bloteware removed. Whenever I try to move files, I use one of 2 methods:
1) moving files by connecting the phone to my PC via USB cable and dragging files
2) unmounting the SD card from the phone and use a card reader to move files
In both cases, no matter how I try or how I move the files, eventually the phone will either freeze / freeze + reset / reset / or everything combined several times. Once the system boots up again, it restarts itself several times while trying to read the memory card.
This is really frustrating because it happens to me for the past 4 months, ever since I bought the phone and tried working on it. No matter what I try to do, I always end up with this problem, which eventually leads my SD card to randomly delete files. This includes music, transferred PSX games and such. It's really bugging me, and I really need some help.
If anyone can help me out, I'd deeply appreciate it.
Thanks a bunch in advance
NOTE:
The card was later formatted to 2 partitions: FAT32 and EXT2. This DID NOT help, so re-partitioning my card won't help. Think of something else.
Repartioning your sdcard over and over can result to data loss. Why did you have 2 partitions? You should only be using FAT32 as your primary partion.

I only did that once, and it doesn't have anything to do with the data loss as this happened before I partitioned the SD card. I have 2 partitions for Link2SD app. And even if I do have FAT32 as my primary partition, it still deletes my files at random...
I have 2 partitions for same reason as you Link2SD! That should not be a problem.
Couple of questions
(1) Is this a new SD card and have you used the card before on other phones (Could be a fault with card try different SD card)
(2)Have you been on the same rom since this problem started (If yes i would try a different rom could be a software problem.)
I would try these options to narrow down what the problem is seems like you have tried all the partition and formatting options already :fingers-crossed:

To answer your questions:
1) This SD card has not been used on other phones since this is my FIRST smartphone (took me a while to move to the next step )
2) I never use roms, only the default stock rom.
I find it hard to believe that the SD card is the problem, but what do you think?

I think only way to know if SD card is to blame is try another one, there are apps on Google Play that can test SD card but I don't know how reliable these are. Also you said you deleted bloatware did you delete something you should not have?It would be good if you could try another card then you would know for sure a smaller SD card just to test?
Well, oddly enough the problem WAS the SD card all along! I've been trying a new SD card for the past week and everything went smoothly.
Funny, but the solution was only to replace my SD card.
With that in mind, I'm changing my question. I guess there have been many posts about it, but I'm going to ask this anyway:
What would be the best SD card for the Xperia Play? The bad one I used recently was a SanDisk 32 GB Micro SD card, and the one I'm using now is a small sized 8 GB.
Can anyone help me out on this one?

The best sdcard for the xperia play is a Sandisk class 4 or 6 sd card. Preferably stick with the class 4.
