[Q] custom recovery - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Saw a post on reddit and twitter that TWRP is almost ready. Has anyone come across further info yet?
Also any ideas when we may start seeing some solid development work?
Thx guys

Twrp should be available this weekend then the roms should start coming

This is exciting to read.... Where should we check? Thank you for the reply !!!!

TWRP for the T-Mobile variant, correct? I haven't seen a confirmation from anyone that the bootloader is unlocked for the other variants.

Will twrp work on all variants out of interest

Did they find a way to unlock it and use TWRP? I know what you mean because normally that's the case unless there is a work around. In really hoping this will happen for all models of the G3.

T-mobile variant is factory unlocked. There was a picture posted on Twitter of a supposed D850 running TWRP, by Autoprime I think, but nothing has come out officially yet.

Im very confused. From what i gathered from the devs they are releasing everything for all devices at the same time, i.e. a universal bootloader tool, or is this not the case anymore...im itching to get my bootloader unlocked and this isnt an ask for an eta or anything, im just wondering if i have got my wires crossed. My d855 has been rooted since day one with no issues and im worried my bootloader will forever be sealed.....is the tool people are saying is available this weekend, the universal bootloader unlock?

They're working on a universal root first. I could be wrong, but I expect the release this weekend will be TWRP for the T-Mobile variant.

you "gathered" wrong..
dev's usually release things when they get them working perfectly, and have a safe way for N00bs to install things without immediately bricking their precious devices.
"Universal" bootloader tool is a pipe dream so dont hold your breath waiting for that
Rumors are just that; rumors, so when your phone's bootloader gets unlocked, you will surely know for sure; until then, its all just SWAG..

Are you one of the devs working on bootloader unlocks...? Because the ones i know definitely are seem to disagree with what you are saying, despite what devs 'usually' do.
From what i see here, it is universal root and universal unlock they are looking to achieve.

They are looking for a universal root for all the variants.
They are also trying to unlock all the variants.
They think that unlocking one variant might allow the unlocking of other variants, but not necessarily all variants.
They are not looking for a 'universal' unlock in the same way that they are looking for a 'universal' root.

I used the Korean version cwm recovery . it works.

Is it possible to Root the Dinc 3? If not yet can one reasonably expect a solution anytime soon or has Verizon found a way to cripple this (for me at least) mission critical modification>

Unlocked bootloader = Root. Once u unlock the bootloader you can put whatever you want onto your phone, i.e. clockwork mod and rooted roms.

If u unlock the bootloader you can almost guarantee root, because you can flash whatever you want. Therefore unlocked bootloader = root...
You are right though, root does not = unlocked bootloader.

Unlocked bootloader is so you can put custom recovery and flash images. Root is having su permissions in Android OS.

I know this...my point is that getting root after HTC unlocks the bootloader will be as easy as flashing a custom recovery and a rom with su. There shouldn't be any need to find exploits to gain root.
Ex.
Fastboot oem unlock
Flash clockwork from bootloader
Wipe and flash custom Rom of choice.

Aren't the only devices that can be "fastboot OEM unlock"ed developer devices like the nexus and xoom? I know that other devices that don't have encrypted bootloaders can usually be rooted easily but I thought it was still more of a process than a simple ADB command.

If HTC really allows people to unlock their device, that might be one possible method they use. Personally I think they will try and find someway to permanently mark the bootloaders are unlocked so they can make sure the carriers can void warrenties (Much like the Nexus One had a picture of a lock to show if you unlocked your bootloader). I'm sure everyone read it but here's HTC's latest status update. http://www.facebook.com/notes/htc/update-on-bootloaders/10150305151453084
It'll be interesting to see what they do. Realistically, they could just leak the unlockable bootloaders and the good folks here on xda would take care of the rest..
It would be disappointing to me if they included some sort of warranty voiding measure as I don't see why the warranty wouldn't still apply to the hardware.

Bootloader locked on S4?!

The S4 has a locked bootloader according to Engadget..
If you're hoping to run custom ROMs in place of TouchWiz, you may have to wait for a little while since Samsung has confirmed to us that the bootloader is locked
Why would Samsung start doing this out of the blue? Their devices have always been very easy to root and customize. Seems a little odd that they would do this.
Ok, you could post in the S4 thread itself since it exists as of a little while ago, or you could post in the Off Topic other devices thread since this forum is for the S3

Not that I'm a big supporter of HTC or anything, but their newest Bootloader unlock lets you flash kernels via recovery, even with S-On. The only limitations is flashing modified radios without HTC's signature.

I believe THIS is the article the OP is referring to. But as CNexus said, it might not be locked on Sprint. But honestly it doesn't matter to me. I will not be Upgrading to the S4. It really doesn't blow me out of the water with Features, Screen, or anything else. Not to mention eventually most of those new features we will be able to have on our S3's .

Ok well, thats not right. On HTC devices (only exception I know of is the EVO 4G), having s-on makes the boot partition unwriteable, except via fastboot and some other hacks
I just got finished helping this guy get his phone booting again. He flashed a rom for the international HTC One and was bootlooping even after flashing another rom. Fastbooting the boot.img fixed him right up.

The T-Mobile US version comes unlocked. No one knows yet whether the other G3 versions will be able to be unlocked. The G2 was never unlocked but a work around where you could install custom Roms and kernels was eventually found. Its very much wait and see.

Looked at many forums that people opened about 1-2 months ago. It seems like very very difficult to unlock it. I have much respect developers whichones tries to unlock it. Hope they can be successful on this. I'm glad to have stock rom this is very smooth i can admit it not like laggy touchwiz. But want to give a try to CM or PA or any AOSP ROM's like this, because back in time i was used AOSP based rom on my S III I9300 and loved it. Only reason that i want AOSP ROM is i think im loving pure Android it gives me ultra-smooth performance and simple UI.
The Verizon and AT&T threads have a bounty over $5700 and it looks like a few devs are close to having a solution.

Locked bootloader is like hot beer. Seems and tastes awfully. I wish companies sends their flagships with unlocked bootloader like T-Mobile did. Without custom recovery we're not able to even do a simple tweak (The tweaks who requires recovery such as modified frameworks and SystemUI's) Otherwise there is another option G3 Tweaksbox. But it shows very limited options if you're poor to buy it.

HMMMM well ill have a look at what i can do tomorrow. Maybe i can find a small window here. I almost want to say that the abswer would be to adjust the bootloader to simply allow multi boot possibilities with partitions (at least in my mind that would be pretty cute).
I dont even really want the money. I just want to be able to do what i need to do. Multi OS's on one device.

Why cant we just copy the unlocked bootloader and overwrite the locked bootloader?

So you can say, i tried to modifiying build prop and ended with softbricking but so i got nandroid which is nice to me. Me neither. On my Note 3 i was tweaking build prop without any problem i've even enabled softkeys (I wondered a bit about how it will look etc.) But not gonna touch until this thing unlocks fully. Using stock rom & root with bloatware removed. With helper programs such as Greenify+Coolify. It's alla about to hardwork and i appreciate all the efforts that developers given on this topic.

Variants have different bootloaders. So we cannot do a copy/paste on it. If it works like this the devices will be unlocked in 10 min. I almost softbricked too but won against my wonder and didn't touched anything. It now works good. I love G3 even its bootloader locked lol

T-Mobile is the only one with the bootloader unlocked so they have full access to using recovery and roms, I don't know if other variants are using a recovery yet since I am a vs985 (verizon) user I don't watch them closely
For vs985 we can't get into fastboot mode because verizon decided to remove or disable it, so we can't use tethered recovery (temporarily booting the recovery from adb shell)
I can tell you that Recovery's aren't hard to make at all. its just we don't have a way to use them right now &
Roms will quickly follow after Recovery's are able to be flashed

Any personal thoughts /guesses about how long will it take?
I'm really excited about it , because when I bought my g3 I left my note 2 for experiments, and hell isn't the name for what my oldie note went through.
My point is that I finally learned how to install custom EVERYTHING. from kernel to build.prop, and my hands are itchy to do the same on my g3
Unfortunately and until the bootloader is unlocked, we have to patiently wait for our great devs to unlock this retarded bootloader. It may take a couple of days, it may take a month, it may never happen. We just have to wait. Oh, and friendly advice: never ask for an ETA on xda

I hope that it wont take long till they find a way to unlock the bootloader. The stock rom is loaded with a lot of bloatware and lg apps that i never intend to use. I want to see how fast the g3 is on a cm 11!

Where did you find this out at? If true it's the best news I've heard in months!

no news, this are older "news". you can find them in at&t lg3 forum section with forum search.
be patient, the devs don't like to get stressed and the whole xda drama about unlock.
jcase already said he is able to run custom images but time is the problem to release it. when everyone is stressing them, they will lose interest to unlock under pressure.
when it's ready you will know it. until release be quiet please. thanks.
There's the "news"

Flash Fire Query

If i flash a ROM such as Genesis with flash fire, i don't need to be rooted first do i? I mean the ROM will be prerooted won't it? Also can I flash fire with a locked bootloader.

Sounds good in theory, but FlashFire will ask for root privileges to do it's work. Thus you will need root to run FlashFire.

Ok. Thanks. Once I've rooted I can then just flash fire the ROM without the need to unlock the bootloader?
Maybe, try it and let us know. I wouldn't do it on a model that didn't have a KDZ available though.

Thanks. Haven't bought one yet but thinking of buying a sim free h815 in the UK. Looks like there's several KDZ files for that.
There's exactly no point in trying.

Wow, so many pre-purchase queries. Imaging, what would :good:happen, "if you buy one."

Maybe I'd be stuck with a device with virtually no development for it since LG seems to be putting up as many barriers as it can.

Many of the H815 have bootloader unlock available now, so some development should appear soon. I'm concerned that the two Nexus phones and possible G4 pro being released will cause people to forget about the G4.
Not many just some and with loss of warranty its hard to just unlock. Even exynos phones see more development than this. If LG can remove loss of warranty probably it will jumpstart the development as more people will not be scared of losing their warranty. They also need to release a unlocked bootloader for all variants. Even rooting is a nightmare when looking at the steps needed

True. You'd think as its been out since April there'd be a simple one click solution by now.
