[Q] Which one to buy, Note 2, or Note 3 Neo - Galaxy Note 3 Neo Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm planning to upgrade my phone. I have narrowed it down to Note 3 Neo and Note 2.
Both have almost similar specifications hardware wise. I'm fixated to these two devices mainly because of the S-Pen.
The price for both the phones is almost similar.
Can anyone guide which one is better amongst the two? I assumed Note 3 Neo will be better (New, hence better ). But, after doing some research, I found about the Knox and its limitations. I'm the type of the person who will root their device the first thing straight out of box.
Which one amongst the two will be better for keeping custom roms, like CM? I think Note 2, having large user base will have more support as compared to Note 3 Neo.
Can anyone shed any light on this? I have 1-2 week to decide.

Hi. New Samsung Galaxy Note 2 stock ROMs already have KNOX inside, so there's no advantage of Note 2 in this way. For example if you will buy SGN2 with Android 4.3 or 4.4, it will have built-in KNOX. And if you try to flash official 4.1.2 ROM (without KNOX) via Odin, your KNOX counter count will change to 0x1 and your warranty will be voided. But if you will have luck and buy SGN2 with nonKNOX rom 4.1.2, then take SGN2 because of many custom ROMs. Good LUCK!!!

Am currently using Note 3 neo and was using a Note 2 earlier. I've got most of features which custom roms (Ones based on stock samsung rom) provide through xposed modules. If you're planning to use CM, Note series isn't the best device irrespective if its Note 2/Note 3 Neo. Also considering both are Exynos based phones where AOSP based roms usually run buggy and are half baked.
But to really answer your question as of now Note 2 is best choice between the two for custom roms.

Spot on!
Moreover CM on a Note series phone is a disrespect to the device!

Thanks for your input. I've done some more research, and came across Sudden Death Syndrome of Note 2 devices. I don't want my phone to go haywire within 1-2 years, as I love my electronics and part with them only when they are absolutely outdated (Was using Motorola Defy until last month. ) Custom roms are not that important, unless they incorporate S-Pen features, since this is the most important reason for me to go for Note device. I've seen Note 3 features ported into Note 2, which is good. But I would never flash a rom without any S-Pen features.
Here is the price I'm finding it on Ebay
1. Note 3 Neo : INR 24,545 or $425 (with manufacturer warranty)
INR 23,380 or $400 (without manufacturer warranty)
2. Note 2 : INR 22,642 or $390 (with manufacturer warranty)
INR 21,249 or $366 (without manufacturer warranty)
Which one would be a good deal?

Since you have used both the models, can you tell me which one you like personally better? Also, any comparison in terms of performance, battery life, etc.
Thanks

SDS was limited problem with initial batch of Note 2 and I doubt you would face this issue now at this point of time with any brand new device . You're just paranoid for no reason and it's too late as Samsung has acknowledged and fixed this issue long back . (H/w revisions and firmware update)
It's not like your Antenna gate problem on the Apple iPhone [emoji57]
I'll blindly recommend Note 3 Neo any day as it's better than Note 2 in performance , battery life and pretty much everything else.

And you're looking forward to purchase it from an online retailer, better buy it from flipkart. It's the safest bet. I'm saying this cos somehow I don't trust eBay for such heavy transactions unless the product is not available in India. Better to pay 1-2K extra & be sure about ur product.

I've bought expensive items like Asus Nexus 7 from Ebay and it's been a great experience . It all depends on the seller and flipkart allows 3rd party sellers too(sometimes they're a pain) but WS Retail is usually preferred and that's most safe bet [emoji13]

I'm not against eBay, I myself buy a lot of stuff from them but somehow there is always a doubt when thinking about buying costly stuff (some of my mates have had bad experiences). As u said it depends on the seller & the power sellers do not sell products for a cheaper price, likewise i feel WS Retail from Flipkart is the safest bet!

If you still haven't decide, I vote for the N3 Neo. I have used the N2 for more than a year and just got my N3 neo dous. When it comes to using the S-Pen, it's far better than N2. Plus the N3 neo has more new features not available in N2. Root is available (didn't apply it yet) but custom roms are not (personally don't need them).

Well, I have done various transaction from eBay India, and some of them were around 15-20k. As it has been already been mentioned, it all depends upon the seller. I wouldn't buy any expensive item from any seller unless he has 300+ feedback, and more than 90% positive feedback.
Moreover, there is a site, feedbackselector (dot) com which lets you grab product specific feedback from any seller. Very useful tool if you buy regular on ebay.
For example, the product in question is this one:
bit (dot) ly/1mwbe7g
The feedback as shown by the feedback selector website:
bit (dot) ly/1ntXu2U
(New user, can't post external links. Remove dot and spaces.)
Since these are real feedback which are given after purchase, it is quite easy to deduce the value vs cost of any item. Looking at the Note 3 Neo feedback, I think its a safe bet.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will myself go for Note 3 Neo. I'll be buying that next month (Salary on 1st ). I was little inclined to go for Note 2 in the middle of my research. But I realized that I will be simply rooting it, and will be installing Note 3 features in that. Why not buy Note 3 Neo itself. I can root and freeze the bloatware. Should be enough, I think.

The S Pen APK's can be found easily enough, the problem is the screen doesn't support the pen. You can find a replacement screen for the Note 8 on eBay and then install it on your Tab 3. Personally I would just buy a EVGA Note 7 and call it day, you can probably sell your Tab 3 8 for the 200 dollar asking price of the EVGA. Your then getting a much, much, much faster tablet as the EVGA has the new Tegra 4, comes with a active digitizer pen which you can than install the S Pen software, an HDMI out port, so you don't have to fork over an additional 50 for the Samsung MHL HDMI adaptor and it has better build quality, actually one of toughest tablets I have seen. Then there is the best part, it's the closest to having a Nexus device without, well, buying a Nexus device. Pure Android, just a 350mb system OS footprint vs. the 2GB plus laggy mess that is TouchWiz. The updates are also released as fast as a Google Nexus device as this is a NVIDIA reference design, so no more waiting 8 months like with a Samsung.
Check it out here http://www.evga.com/articles/00790/
This is just suggestion if you want a fast, inexpensive tablet with pen support. If you decide to go with the first option let me know, I could help locate the parts and even help with the install by providing detailed instructions. I have a friend who works in the Tablet/Phone repair department for Interdiscount.ch here in Switzerland. Since the Samsung's have more problems than any other tablet manufacture that they sell he might actually have the parts your looking for on hand, his words, In fact when I bought a Tab 3 10.1 he called me an idiot and told me for every 3 sold, 1 is returned. I now know what he meant as I returned mine after only a few days and got the Nexus 10, I heard the Tab 3 8's are much better though. I will contact him on your behalf if your interested. I like visiting his workshop anyway, he always lets me steal a part or two for my Frankenstein projects.

[Q] Is this device worth buying now?

Hi.
I currently own a Galaxy Note 10.1 (2012) and unfortunately I woke it up during lunch and was surprised to find that the screen now hates black and now it displays things incorrectly. It's still usable but ugly to look at. So I've read some reviews and it seems that the battery life is much worse and it's laggy even with 8 cores. So after more than 6 months, is this cellphone/tablet worth it now? I prefer the 10 inch notes for random sketching though but I normally do my art with a real Wacom tablet. I'm thinking of either suffering until the release of the next Galaxy Note 10.1 or possibly jump at Asus Transformer Book V or just jumping to the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014. I mainly just use my tablet for Internet and drawing on Sketchbook Pro.
If you are normal with a life and don't sit around all day and pick at everything , This tablet is the best out there for the money,,I have had mine since Dec 21013 and had no issues , I'm rooted and its stupid fast and does everything, Don't listen to the reviews on this tab, most of the bad ones are IPad goons and people with way too much time on their hands.

best Android tablet right now — better than the Asus/Tegra offering, with higher res and functionality than Sony's Xperia Z2 Tab. can't beat the SPen. only gripe is the Sammy Book cover is crazy expensive.

Doh! Didn't see the Maple Leaf the first time. I've always wondered that if a "friend" sends something like that (mine came in just a regular 8x10-ish packing envelope) to you in Canada, how closely would HM Customs examine it, and if the shipping would be crazy expensive?
Too bad about Best Buy- ours here have them (at MSRP, though).

if it's a "gift", we are allowed up to a certain amount, but that designation depends on the seller (eBay peeps can be accommodating). sometimes i'll get stuff shipped to Point Roberts, just across the border, and then take a drive and roll the dice with the border guard. i've had $700 phones and gear sent that way, and have lucked out.
you Americans get all the good stuff! the black version of the P600 hasn't even been released yet here. and probably won't be ...
gotta say, i really dig the Official Book Cover. slim, and still shows off the design of the tablet, with just enough protection for the screen (not using any film or tempered glass on the screen.

PM me, if you'd like.
If you want to root while keeping warranty, I suggest NOT buying this tablet.
I just bought it and regretted it due to the above. I don't install custom ROM, but I need root for Xposed (unrestricted Multiview), debloat (seems very necessary for Samsung devices) and back up (Helium and Titanium Backup).
Don't spread misinformation- you can get root w/o tripping Knox nor voiding your warranty.

For Wifi version?! I know there is one for 3G/LTE with TowelRoot, but but not Wifi version. CF Root for Wifi will trip KNOX.
If there is, please do share. I'd love to root my tablet.

Well, can you share the link how to do this? Then maybe you can ask mod to update the FAQ, since as of today, there is NO root for KK for Wifi without tripping KNOX.

I would say yes to buying. On the neg for me I root and custom rom all Android devices I own and got mine this weekend not having read this forum. It came with 4.4.2 so I can only root but cannot do a custom recovery for a custom rom as some here have had theirs longer than I.
Don't know if any love will come for the 442 but if root is not your concern it is a sweet device. I know without a custom rom I am missing another level that they offer.

I am playing nice - I gave OP info about root just in case he wants to do so.
However, I was "accused" of spreading mis-information by @kcrudup and @GalaxyNotesTx. If I gave wrong info, correct me by providing the link to rooting Wifi version without tripping KNOX, and I'll fix my post.
FYI: I just got this tablet yesterday and have been searching XDA and Googling other forums and sites - no root without tripping KNOX for wifi version. So I don't want OP to be as disappointed as me IF he/she wants root.
After my Note 3 and Moto G was stolen ,, i bought LG G Pro Lite Dual and thinking on getting a tablet for Games Movies and all kind of entertainment ,,, for a week now i was reading and watching all reviews and i can't choose between the Note 10.1 2014 Edition and Tab S 10.5
The Note 10.1 2014 is already available for a good price the 3G version will cost me around 550USD while the Tab S isn't here yet and don't know it's price but for sure it will be more expensive
so do you advice getting the Note 10.1 2014 or shall i wait for the Tab S ??!!

I think it depends on whether you need the S-pen or not. I've looked at the Tab S, but I need the pen.
Plus, the Note is only $459 at Amazon, so it's cheaper.

Can't get it throw Amazon here in Egypt so i have to get it from any local store ,, i used Note 2 and Note 3 but i can't say that i use the SPen that much ,, it's a great addition indeed but holding 2 phones in my hand before prevented me from using the SPen
the main issue that the Tab S will be out of my budget fore sure but if it worth it then i will try to get one whenever it's here also they almost identical in specifications except for the screen Super LCD Vs. Super AMOLED
I guess for sure that Samsung will update all this devices for Android L so i don't have to worry about it
I would prefer to get the Snapdragon version but it's a quit rare in common and hard to get so i have to stick to the Exynos although i prefer the Snapdragon
So what do you think ?!

Why do you recommend the Galaxy Tab Pro ? comparing to Note 10.1 2014 they are both identical but you got the SPen and more 1GB of RAM so i guess the Note 10.1 2014 is better than Galaxy Tab Pro and maybe cheaper also

Is it still a good choice?

hi guys,
Let's consider that in 1 or 2 months everything will be back to normal and Note 7 will be back in stores and no one will be harmed again and the buzz is gone.
I don't imagine that Samsung will change the screen Gorilla Glass 5 to something less fragile in addition to the battery, so this will still be a weakness for this phone, because to MHO this seems to be its only real flaw (except the battery), Android Nougat will certainly arrive in few months from now too.
so my questions are these ones:
- Will it still be the best phone of the year?
- Won't we have more difficulties to sell it back within 1-2 years from now without loosing too much?
- Is it still worth buying it?
Also,
If it's still one of the best phones of the year, is it worth waiting Christmas period for hoping having promotions and discounts or Samsung has already lost enough with it and will not provide any more discount on this model and will focus his promotions on his other flagships S7 & coming new ones?
It's the best Android device available right now. If re-sale value and GG5 bother you then yes, it's worth considering those points further. Spec wise, no, it's not matched in the Android space.
I would imagine (I could be wrong) that Samsung will be desperate to put the Note 7 behind them and release the S8 ASAP to do a massive ad campaign and regain some lost sales.
Yes the Note 7 price will drop, yes resale value will be affected by that drop. You will have a fantastic device and if keeping for even 12 months in my opinion it's worth while.
Samsung Galaxy Note 7
:good:
All know that Note7 is epic and I rly doubt it will lose value unless sammy rly drop it's price when S8 will come. Best phone? To iPPL it will never be the best phone, looking at android world the price is not so great but if you put it aside it's sure the best phone of this year... Anyway I don't care. I will get mine and be happy if S8E will be cool I might try selling the N7 and move on. Usually my phone last me 2-3 years and which point I wan't to get a new one.

one plus 3? it is cheap looking an wayy larger
lg v20? same , but even larger, not to mention the horrible sec display
iphone 7? same looking 2015 device larger and slave-bound
so, what do you feel like to choose?

True. Samsung may have screwed the model reputation, but there is nothing like it currently. Maybe the Pixel phones will change that, but still, they'll be ugly and only geeks (us included) will go for it, so the note 7 will maintain a moderate resell value for those looking for phones in 2nd hand.
I don't play any games on my phone, I use it for business (we do sales via a company app with clients so it's a must), tasks, reading, podcasts and of course messaging. For what I need it's just perfect, I remember worrying what I'd do without root since I had my S3 rooted and that was 4 years of acclimation, now I don't even remember the idea of rooting until I see it mentioned on some forum or article (I know, blasphemy around here, sorry ).
I also (possibly more blasphemy) *like* Touchwiz on it! I had Good Lock on my original N7 until sending it back other day, and it was a nice throwback to the rooted stock Android look I was used to on my S3, but I actually wanted the Touchwiz back! Got replacement N7 and am not even considering Good Lock, it's sexy and I'm happy with it.

any similar phones out there?

I've been on a year-long hunt for a new phone SPRINT compatible, and they all seem like downgrades. here's my checklist of features and how important they are (10) or aren't (1) to me:
1. unlocked / unlockable bootloader WITHOUT need for exploits: 10
2. sdcard slot: 10
3. user replaceable battery: 9
4. 3gb+ ram: 9
5. 2.4 ghz or faster, quadcore or SYNCHRONOUS octa: 8
6. finger print reader: 7
7. infrared blaster: 6
8. likely to OFFICIALLY receive android 8.0 update: 6
9. optical stabilized camera: 5
10. quick charge 2.0 or better: 7
95% off all devices ever since my contract expired December 1st last year either fail at Sprint network compatibility, or bootloader. over time I'm gradually accepting defeat on user replaceable batteries ;(
closest candidate for me is the lg v20 but there's virtually no breakthrough features on it to justify a 2 year "upgrade" to it from the note 4
I had an s5, bought a used note 4 about 8 months ago. (I've been using smart phones for about 15 years, since the ppc6700)
Had an upgrade available, was in the same boat. Purchased a g6 and sold my note. I sold my g6 yesterday and bought another used note.
Moral of the story?
If your current model makes you happy and there isn't a new phone that will make you more happy... Perhaps it's time to keep what you have. The v20 is nice, but without a home button... How much of an upgrade is it really? What will it really do that you can't do now? Perhaps complete a task in 7/10ths of a second faster?
Save your money. I'll be sticking with the note 4 for a long time. In the evolution of cell phone technology, the note 4 was a major pivot point. I don't see anything out there that doesn't include disgusting compromises.
I do wish the note 4 was waterproof, but I'll live. Heck... I could buy several replacements (if I damaged it) for less money then I would spend on a new phone.

Great phone. Use to connect to my clients Servers to do maintenance and watch live TV with my Sling unit way, way before this was a thing.

I remember coworkers (nicely) mocking me for using it. 'why would anyone want a big phone!' - couple of years later they all had their phablets.
Unfortunately, there is no upgrade that meets your requirements. When I broke my Note 4, I went with the Note Edge. Phone sucks compared to the regular note. I researched the V20, G6, G5. None of the current phones do what I want them to do. I almost got the V20, but xposed not being available for Nougat led me to get another Note 4. I think I'll be using Note 4's for the forseeable future. This has been by far my favorite phone, so I'm not complaining.
the LGV20 imo is the true successor to the note 4
made the jump 2 months ago and loving it
I refuse to buy a phone without an interchangeable battery......im a heavy user so stock batteries suck, I need my extended batteries

Note 10+ or Samsung Fold

I am currently using Samsung Galaxy S10 plus. Should I go ahead and buy Note 10 + or wait for Samsung fold?
Depends. Do you want the Fold, or do you want the N10+?
I want to upgrade my phone. Only Samsung Note 10 + is available in market which is better than my phone. Samsung fold is a new tech so is it worth waiting for fold price drop or purchase note 10+?
I always advice others this:
The note series is REALLY satisfactory for those who like an apreciate the features the S Pen provides, if the S Pen is not the MOST important feature for you to have, simply get something else , as you put it, the the S10+ or the fold would be good for you
That's like asking "should I get SUV or should I get 2 seater sports car" LOL. Fold won't be available until around 9/27 and should cost around $1800. Note 10+ is available now for around $1100. I already made the decision (as probably a lot of other people here) to buy N10+, because Fold won't have s-pen, which I use all the time and it's a new tech which already showed to be troublesome in the past. I'll wait to see if all problems are fixed and if much larger screen is compelling reason enough. Also hope for price to come down a little. At home and work I have computers, which I prefer to use over the phone no matter screen size and on the go where I use the phone the most (like driving for map guidance/traffic) larger screen may actually be too cumbersome. I can always sell N10+ and buy fold in the future and couple hundred resulting loss shouldn't be major concern, when you're spending $1800 on the phone.
BTW I agree with Winol, if you don't use s-pen much, there are so many other good phones to choose from, it's mind boggling.

The problem is, you're asking us what you should buy, and none of know what features are important to you. Only you know if it's worth it to you.
It's an impossible question to answer anyway since none of us have a Galaxy Fold.
Do some research, watch some YouTube videos, and decide which one interests you the most.
I think you should actually look at the other foldable phones. Huawei's version is actually a lot better in my opinion. Of course I'm not yet considering all their troubles with the US Gov't. But when I compared the 2, I really felt Samsung dropped the ball there.
With regards to new tech, and given the problems the first fold encountered recently, I would actually warn people from buying the Samsung fold. I previously bought the Note 7 which was recalled 2x. And it was such a hassle. I had to set up my phone 2x only to have it recalled. I sold my old phone too so I ended up without a phone. I had to settle with an LG phone at the time and replaced it when the Note 8 came out.
I would not buy first-gen new tech. Foldable devices will be crap the first few go-arounds most likely. Would not want to be a first adopter. The Note line is 9 years old now definitely very mature while the first Fold literally folded so badly they nixed it and are trying again 6 months later. Go with the Note 10+ or a similar device that is not first gen tech.
for me, first generation tech is always a BIG NO.
The 15 year old is dying for the 2000$+ new tech, but i controlled the sucker and got the Note 10+ and satisfied since i have tab s6 for the heavy stuff. best of both words (phones and tablets) and cost less than the fold

Not so fast my friend!
The S-Pen is a big factor to consider. But there are others that you should take into consideration....
The 12GB of RAM is a huge upgrade. If you think the S10+ is fast, the Note10+ is that much faster with 50% more RAM!!!

Most people don't though. That was only on the 1TB model, right?
