[Q] Is there a way to get the verizon visual voicemail vvm.apk to work with CM6?

I have the files to install the app itself, but when I try it says that it's already installed and asks me to uninstall it. Is there something that I need to do in order to make this work? I really hate google voice and other alternatives to the stock app. This is literally the only thing that I don't really like about cyanogenmod, and it's probably not worth using a different rom just because of this, so if anyone knows a fix please let me know, thanks!

Same issue: no VZW VVM on CM 6.1 RC2 / Incredible
I agree, I would really like to have the stock visual voicemail app on my CM installation. Does anybody have any ideas about how to get this to work?
I tried copying the VVM.apk from the original system image and installing it, but I get a DEXOPT error, and I don't really know what that means. Is there anyway to recompile/repackage the APK to make it work on the CM ROM?
I'm familiar with basic Android software development and tools, I just need help finding what direction to go in.
Use file manager and go to "/system"
Mount the folder R/W(Read/Write
open build.prop in Text Editor
look for "ro.horizontalVvvm = True" and chenge it to False
look for "ro.horizontalBUA = True" and change it to False
save your edit, and back out to thr "/system" folder. Once again switch the directory back to R/O, exit your apps and reboot.
You shoulkd now be able to install your Vvm.apk without it telling you to uninstall it because one is already installed.
Note I am using Virtuous rom however it should work for most roms I would imagine.
If you do not have a Vvm.apk here is one from the Droid X but it works great on my incredible. Looks almost like the stock incredible version.
mc-pdfd-live.dyndns.org/droid/VIRTUOUS_ROM_3.2.0_ADDONS/Motorola_Virtual_Voicemail/virtual-voicemail.zip
Hope this helped.
I can't edit the file. It errors when I try to save.
Here are a couple of simple questions for BYUsinger84 to help me figure it out.
Is your phone rooted ? If not this will not work.
If thats not the problem are you making sure to mount the "/system" folder R/W(Read/Write) before modifying the "build.prop" file, and then back to R/O(Read/Only) once editing is done and saved.
You say it errors when you try to save. Sounds like you probably didnt mount the "/system" folder to be R/W not allowing the modified file to be written to the phone.
If you did do all of that corrrectly and it still dosen't work, try to write down or get a screen capture of the exact error as it is written on your screen.
Hope this helps.
Yes. this fix works on the Incredibly ReEngineered rom as well. Thanks for the ups.
THANKS!
I lost the visual voicemail app when I flash the OMGB V7 rom
Why not use Google voice? Sets up the same thing.

FYI i know this is an older post, but maybe, like me, someone will search for how to make vvm work - this is for my tbolt, but looks like it works on andriods in general, just gotta have hookup to big red.
Im running synergy rc2 and these switches are already true. i used root explorer to browse to the system/build.prop file and viewed it (didnt have to edit, but if i did, root explorer already opens r/w defalut and if you select and hold, the menu that comes up has the 'edit in text editor' selection available)
the titanium backup of vvm.apk wouldnt install, but when i downloaded the one above (THANKS FOR IT), i installed it and my messages started coming in. i installed it right from the SD card - not sure if that will bite me in the butt later, but oh well.
for those who ask why vvm - i am new to android and never set up gvoice account before jumping into the root game. oops on my part, but its kinda nice cuz it makes me dig in and look at the way things work. to retreive my vms, both past (like my 4year old son calling and telling me that when we went through texas, thats where t-rexes lived long ago) and present/new. now that it is working again, NOW i can migrate to gvoice and drop the 2.99 fees!
i suspect there are others in a similar boat...

[HOW TO] Manually Update PRL

I found the answer to my problems...I had to get REALLY creative with my search terms and do a lot of poking through old threads.
So I figured I would change this to a [HOW TO] and maybe be of assistance to future generations.
What is PRL, you say?
http://www.phonescoop.com/glossary/term.php?gid=11 said:
(Preferred Roaming List)
The PRL is a list of information that resides in the memory of some kinds of digital phones. It lists the radio frequencies the phone can use in various geographic areas.
The part of the list for each area is ordered by the bands the phone should try to use first. Therefore it's a kind of priority list for which towers the phone should use.
The PRL helps determine which home-network towers to use, and also which towers belonging to other networks to use in roaming situations (areas where the home network has no coverage.) When roaming, the PRL may instruct the phone to use the network with the best roaming rate for the carrier, rather than the one with the strongest signal at the moment.
Since a PRL tells the phone "where" to search for a signal, as carrier networks change over time, an updated PRL may be required for a phone to "see" all of the coverage that it should, both with the home network and for roaming.

Note for CM users: CM users will have to update their PRL through a Sense ROM. At this time CM does not support EPST codes.
-Do a full Nandroid Backup,
-after you do your Nandroid Backup wipe the Cache, Dalvik Cache, and Data,
-then flash a stock-based ROM (i.e., Fresh, Myn's, etc.),
-update your PRL,
-and then do a Nand Restore back to CM.
Note: Most people should be able to update their PRL through Menu > Settings > Systems Updates. For some this may not work (like me!), the instructions below should allow you to update your PRL manually from a file on your SD Card.
Here's what you need to do to manually update your PRL:
1. Download your desired PRL (I have attached the 3 newest versions below), unzip it, and save it to your SD card. I found This List from another post, which also links to This Thread on PPC Geeks.
2. If you are on a 2.1 or lower ROM skip to Step 6.
3. If you are runing a 2.2 or higher ROM, download the old EPST.apk (attached below) and save it to your SD card.
4. Use a Root Explorer (I used ES File Explorer), mount the system as R/W, and rename the EPST.apk file found in /system/app to EPST.tmp.
5. Now copy the EPST.apk you just downloaded from your SD card to /system/app, then tap and install it. Once the installation is done unmount the system and close your explorer program.
6. Open your dialer and dial ##775#, a prompt will appear asking for a password, you must enter your MSL here (I got mine from Sprint when I was having a problem with my ported phone number showing up).
6. After a moment you will see a list of all the PRL files on your SD card, choose the PRL file you wish to use and tap "OK".
7. Press the Menu button and tap "Commit Changes".
8. The phone should reboot itself after 10 seconds (you can tap "OK" to reboot immediately).
To verify: Menu > Settings > About Phone > Software Information (default...in CM it's listed under Status).
Note: Once you have updated your PRL, you can do a Nand restore and the PRL you just updated will remain in place.
I cannot take credit for any of this, I am just putting it all in one place to make it easier on n00bs like me!
Much thanks to the posts by: kperry1911, kyouko, myndwire (for the link to the Android forums which allowed me to find more info) and ch_ee_ko (which led me to kyouko's post)

Hey guys, wondering if anyone can tell me wtf?
I was on CM-6.1.1 and had PRL 60668, I flashed Myn's to update PRL, and now my PRL is 40434.
Tried again, it acted like it was updating, but no change. Flashed to Fresh 3.4 and same story, acted like it was updating but no change afterwards.
Thanks in advance, I poked around this forum, and I also tried XDA and Google search...Just found a bunch of unrelated crap.
*Edit* I have the newest Radio, PRI, and NV.
I just tried using fresh 3.5.1, stil no change.
I've now also tried using a stock rooted 3.7 ROM, still no dice. Any insight would be welcome! Thanks!

You dont have to rename it to that, just rename it to something else, like EPST_old. Also, are you sure you mounted as r/w first?

Yea you need to be rooted. Root Explorer shouldn't have even opened if you are not rooted.
Just curius how hard is it to revert back to your old prl if this does not help

[Q] asrto file manager, just a couple of questions

checked out similar threads but none about this.i have an evo and have astro file manager.i go into the app and then go to sd card>clockworkmod>download>,and there are about 45 "downloads".all they are is 9-digit "downloads".when i select one,it tells me filr type not found.just kinda wondering if its ok to clear these out to save space on sd card.i dont wanna clear anything out,and they be needed.
If it says clockworkmod then you don't want to touch it. That deals with your recovery and if you delete something, when you restore (if it lets you restore) something wont be right

ok,i just wanted to know.i didnt want a bunch of stuff that i dont need taking up space on the sd card.i plan on getting a 16gb sd soon. i didnt do anything with the cyanogenmod stuff,or all my backups, incuding nand.and i do have everything backed up to my pc as well.thanx for helping
feel free to delete anything in downloads. all the number files get recreated/downloaded when you select "download ROMS". i looked at a few of the files and it just contains ratings info for the available ROMS.
i deleted everything in the folder and when i opened up ROM manager some more number files got generated.

Help with busybox and mounts2sd...

I can't seem to get this running properly. Itwont store info on my sdext4 because there is already read only files there. How can i get rid of that? I've tried every avenue via Google. Surely to God there must be an app for rooted users to change read only files.
Will someone be kind enough to offer a suggestion?
Hope this helps.

If you're talking about file permissions, I use ES File Manager to change file permissions.
Nah... That didnt work. I couldnt see them. They were evil. Not sure where i picked them up. The script was set to delete my data connection and Wifi. I ended up finding the script when I tried to partion my SD card. I had a third hidden partition with 33Mb of something F'ed up. I used another SD card and downloaded the same ROM and everything was fine. I ended up using Gparted to wipe my card. Its the ONLY thing that will wipe EVERYTHING no matter what it is. Its doesnt see "read only" scripts.

Please help, deleted wall paper picker and program monitor from Galaxy Grand

Hello to members here.
Would be really grateful for any help with info' regarding my Galaxy Grand Dous GT-19082 running on 4.1.2. I like the phone a lot, and don't like the fact I accidentally deleted the wall paper picker and also the program monitor from the system with root delete app. So I can not use live wall paper now, or the program monitor
As said before, phone rooted, think using/has CWM. Apart from that it's standard.I didn't back up my phone with Titanium back up etc unfortunately. I have tried to see which ROM I am using, but can't find out, even under settings/about device. It must be a stock ROM I guess, as I only rooted it, didn't change ROM.
I have spent/wasted a day and a half so far trying to find info' on the web looking how I can re install these to the phone. Potentially frustrating. I have looked for the apk files but could not locate.
I am fairly basic with my knowledge on this techie stuff, so if anyone can explain as simply as possible and step by step. I would be most thankful. If I could pay somebody to do it, then I would probably be keen, just want my phone as it was again...
Thanks again, and respect in advance for any helps/info' and advise.
Sincere regards, Alex
Recklessly deleting a few, seemingly unimportant system files could have as destructive consequence as having to reflash your whole firmware via Odin. That means you have to backup all your apps and datas. What firmware version are you on currently? Maybe some guys here can help extracting the files from the firmware package you mentioned, or else you might have to download the whole firmware (mind you, it's huge) and flash it via Odin.
Hey Naufalhadyan, Thanks for the reply. Yes, was reckless and kind'a stupid deleting the files.
My firmware is I believe 4.1.2 Jelly Bean

1. Boot into recovery, Volume UP + Home + Power
2. Select Install zip and choose this zip file - View attachment apps-update.zip
3. Let it install
4. Go back, select Wipe Cache
5. Go to advanced, select Wipe Dalvik-cache
Alternatively, extract the zip, mount your /system and copy the apks included and set their permissions to rw-r--r--
I couldn't find an exact apk that says Program Provider, so I'm included both possible ones.
Apks included:
- ApplicationsProvider
- SecLiveWallpapersPicker
- SecWallpaperChooser
- TaskProvider
All above apps are extracted from 4.1.2 XXAMF7 firmware directly.
The zip file will copy and replace the above system apps. Clearing cache and dalvik-cache will let your phone upgrade apps but no data will be lost, without it you might get Force Closes.
NOTE: Please make sure you back up your data before-hand, just in case
Hi Iceyhotguy,
Much thanks to you for the zip link and what seems like straight forward instructions.
I have spent a while trying to add the zip. When I go into recovery mode, it says it can not mound sd card. I have even payed for the premium version of CWM now, thinking I could add the zip this way, which I think I can, but again in recovery mode, it can not mount the sd card, which is where the file is download to. (I think)
Have downloaded the file straight to the phone aswell, but no luck yet.
I guess I have to install manually some how, you said ''Alternatively, extract the zip, mount your /system and copy the apks included and set their permissions to rw-r--r--'' . If you could be so kind to talk me through in baby steps (as I don't really understand this way) how I can do it this way, seeing the recovery mode way is not working for some reason.
Close,but not quite there yet.
Really hoping to fix my mistakes of accidentally deleting file soon, guess it's a good lesson, and I am learning more about this kind of thing, so not all bad.
Hope to hear back from you, and/or other members soon.
Thankyou,
Alex
Spent ages trying to fix my phone, and research online how I ''copy the apks included and set their permissions to rw-r--r--'' can't do it, getting frustrating..
Also I read online that using CWM as a recovery is not needed on a stock ROM and the error message in recovery 'can't not mount sd card'' can happen with stock rom and CWM....
Would really appreciate some help to fix this. Thanks:good:
Managed to try change permission with a root explorer program, though it says some files do not allow permission change, so seems I can not so this either

Reflash the CWM for 4.1.2 with Odin from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=42349036&postcount=1
That'll fix the sdcard issue. If it doesn't try putting the zip file in internal memory.
I explained how to copy bootanimation file here in steps and paste it back in /system/media with setting permissions : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=46010766&postcount=2
The same principle will apply when copying apks from the above zip file, take all 4 apks, and paste them in /system/app folder then follow my post above to set permission.
