[Q] Help with Rooting and Flashing ROM (newbie) - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have Samsung Galaxy Note 2 running Android 4.3 stock. It have'nt been rooted or modified in anyway. Just like a fresh out of shop Note 2,
only it is over a year old, so the warranty is over. I'm very interested with the DN3 v5 ROM. Is there any specific guide (preferably step-by-step guide) on how to get from here (fresh phone) to the finished phone (completed with working DN3 ROM).
I understand that it needed to be rooted, have specific bootloader and the latest recovery mode. (detailed guide to install them would be very helpfull). I've done flashing custom ROM on my Sony Xperia Miro long ago, but on this Samsung it seems much more harder.
So, I just need a non-confusing guide to do it, as I don't have much experience in this thing.
I've found many guide on this, but most of them not exactly the same as my specs. Just worried that the worst would happen.
And lastly, I have Knox in my phone but I never installed it. Is it gonna make any different or what?
If there is any existing guide on it, I would appreciate the link. Thanks in advanced.

Sprint Note II L900 CUSTOM ROM ??
Rooted.
Cwm 6+.
Flash Custom ROMs + Gapps Successfully.
My ISSUE (after flashing ROM etc.) Reboots Fine into ROM.
however, if I turn off the device..I have to Reboot into recovery and flash again...
WHY are ROMs not "Sticking" and Rebooting if device is shut down or Dies (Battery)?
???ANY HELP ?? I sure its simple but I'm discombobulated on this issue.

Give twrp a try

And what on earth has that got to do with the OP's thread?
Stop hijacking peoples topics.

Well, I manage to root using dr.ketan multitool. But then problem arise when i tried to install mj5 bootloader. In Odin it says fail and in my phone it says unsupported version. Now my phone stucked with this message, "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."...What do I do? Help please...
Edit :
I tried to flashed Philz recovery and it went back to life! Now, I need a way to install bootloader for DN3 v5, any version would be fine I guess. Help please...
Edit :
Finally finished flashing DN3. Just flash twrp using mobileodin and use current bootloader then flash DN3.

If you are able to access download mode, you could easily flash a custom ROM.
S i can access download mode
Can i go back to stock or only custom firmware from now on..?

If I were you, I would go to a custom firmware. That is if you have a custom recovery like ClockWorkmod or TWRP. But you can flash stock, at least to my understanding. But I'd look into that.
(Your bootloader will need to be unlocked too)
I am on Clockworkmod v6.0.3.1 the thing is i don't want a custom firmware 2 many problems
I would like to load stock buy have read most of them get their phones bricked

If you were on the 4.3 official stock ROM that was pushed out, you have a possibility of bricking your device downgrading to lets say the 4.1.2 stock ROM.
A custom ROM isn't bad though. If you do like Touchwiz based ROMs you may be able to find one in the development section.

What information are you wanting to backup?
You'll have to find your ROM of choice. If you want a reliable ROM then I'd recommend something that is stable, which should always be said in the thread,

Contacts could be backed up if you sync with your gmail account. SMS can be done by an application on the market. Notes that are synced on Evernote or Keep should just be there.

MJ5 bootloader flash problems

Hi guys!
I hope that I chose the right forum to ask my question: I installed this rom onto my Note 2 LTE N7105, but now I don't have wifi (as the text in the rom description says). Before I flashed the rom, I had installed Devils Rom (deodexed and deknoxed 4.3 stock) with the devils kernel (based on MK5). I thought that the bootloader will be kept, because I already installed a wifi hotfix for that bootloader.
Now I have the new 4.4 rom installed, it works fine - except for wifi. If I got this right (if not, correct me) - flashing the MJ5 bootloader will solve the problem and I won't have KNOX triggered (now I have a "MA5" bootloader). So I tried to flash the MJ5 bootloader with ODIN 3.09 but it keeps failing. The drivers are installed, I can access the download menu. My pc recognizes the phone as COM5, but when I load the bootloader and click on flash, almost instantly a red FAIL appears in the first block. The output says "writing NAND..." and then "FAILED".
Now I am a bit confused - does the MJ5 bootloader work with the Note 2 LTE or only the non- LTE version? Are there any other ways to get wifi to work? If there's now way around, I am willing to trigger my knox.
Thanks in advance, I hope you can help a very confused user
Im having the same problems. odin is giving no love on updating the bootloader

Did you try to flash the kernel as stated in the installation instructions of the rom that your trying to install?
I have the agni kernel as it is the only way to get the wifi to work without the bootloader, which im trying to get too. For the life of me i cannot figure out why odin doesnt want to flash the bootloader. mj5 or nd3 makes no difference. according to info app my boot loader version is N7105ZHALJ4. Do I need to step up 'slower'?
I want to go to any of those recent bootloaders so wifi will work normally. It seems slow on the agni kernel but at least it works.

AFAIK you can't install Agni Kernel using Odin. Instead use your Custom Recovery to install that kernel, under "Install Zip from Storage" option of your custom recovery. HTH.

So no answer on this question yet?? I'm also trying to flash the MJ5 bootloader using Odin, no luck though.
Can anyone explain why it keeps failing?

No, I never managed to fix it. I think I found out in the end that there never was an MJ5 bootloader for the GT-N7105 (the international LTE version). There was only an MJ5 bootloader for the non-LTE version, the GT-N7100. And of course, that phone's bootloader will never work on the N7105.
So we're out of luck it appears
so the phone is dead ?

All of the new KitKat ROMs have fixes built in for that. Some of the Lollipop ROMs also fix this, so you don't really need that bootloader.

I'm on NamelessROM 5.0.2 at the moment, works fine for me. I'd probably recommend that one, battery life is also great. It's in the N7105 development forum. :good:
I was also on CM11 official, worked like a charm. There are a number of 4.4.4 ROMs in the N7105 development forum that were quite mature and worked well.

Ok, then it's a completely different discussion... not sure why the bootloader would be failing in that case, since it was built for that device. You could try a different Odin? (Assuming of course that your are NOT trying to DOWNGRADE the bootloader... it's well known that you can't downgrade the bootloarder to MJ5 from something more recent).
Otherwise, I'm sure there are equally useful ROMs for the N7100 in the Note 2 Original Development forum.
But, since your device is probably pretty old and almost certainly out of warranty by now, I would seriously consider flashing the latest official Samsung ROM to get the latest bootloader and then flash whatever you want on top of that. Voiding the warranty is irrelevant if you're already out of warranty. But, I have heard that even with the latest bootloader some people still have trouble with wifi and BT. In that case all I can suggest is playing around with different ROMs until you find something that works for you. As I'm not a N7100 user I can't really offer more advice than that, sorry man.
Guys where I can find a REAL WORKING link to download mj5 or higher bootloader??
I tried a lot & most of them are obselete
Maybe downnload the latest stock ROM from sammobile.com and extract the bootloader?

[Q] Ace 2 stuck on Samsung Logo - won't go in recovery mode

Hey everyone
I have a huge problem with my ace 2, it is stuck on the Samsung logo and it won't go in recovery mode. Please, let me explain, I was fed up with my rooted 2.3 GB ace 2 and I decided to flash CM 10.2. I downloaded the .zip and flashed it along with the suitable gapps. After booting, I realised it did not have any signal and wifi was not available. After searching online for a while with not any results, I decided to flash CM 11. After that, wifi was back but still no signal. I said sc**w it and downloaded the official JB firmware for my phone from sammobile. After flashing it with odin, the phone won't boot. It stays in samsung screen. It won't even go in recovery mode in order to erase cache etc. I tried downgrading to the stock GB, ADB, KIES, DROID EXPLORER, the phone is recognised only in ODIN.
Can anyone help ?
-Thank you for your time
First Try odin with newest custom stocked rom. I got this "brick" couple times. And this think if working every time.

Any (!!) CM needs JB FW at first...
I suggest to begin from scratch! Let the Phone boot completely after each FW flash.
1) Flash 3-Parted FW (see my sig) - Be sure you pick the correct one for you Phone (8160 / 8160P / 8160L)
2) Flash stock JB for your Phone and country
3) Flash CM11 and Gapps

Upgrade firmware only to cof8?

Hello all,
I was wondering if I can upgrade the radio and bootloader to COF8 without running a 5.1.1 ROM. I am rooted with Ktoonz kernel with firmware AOC9 with 5.0.2 stock ROM.
TIA.
Bob
Once you upgrade bootloader , you can only run 5.1.1. Not sure about ONLY upgrading radio.
Thank You for the reply..
So once I ODIN the new firmware, I need to load a 5.1.1 rom before letting the phone boot up to the 5.0.2 rom?

You cannot boot a 5.0.2 ROM once you are on 5.1.1 firmware. That's the way it is as far as I know. There is no downgrade possible once you are on 5.1.1
Personally, I have no issues with 5.1.1. Great ROMs now. Great battery life. I personally do NOT care about Knox or the ability to run Samsung Pay. Just my 2c.
Thank You.
SO.. Once I start the firmware upgrade.. I must immediately load a 5.1.1 rom.
1. Upgrade the baseband... dont re-boot.
2. Upgrade the Bootloader... dont re-boot.
3. Install a 5.1.1 rom... reboot. Thinking of the ROM below.

I won't tell you what ROM to choose. Yes, coincidentally I am using the Xtrestolite rom with the alliance frameworks, but I have a lot of other favorites both on TMobile as well as the International galaxy S6 or S6 Edge roms. The key is the kernel which gives you root. The International ROMs as well as the Tmobile ROMs all work with the latest Unikernel version 6. Once in a while if you run into the no call audio issues, simply flash the latest no call audio fixes. I don't have links right now but most of the OPs on these ROMs will list the no call audio patch files basically to have Tmobile as well as Canadian variants work universally. So yes, simply use Odin to install the latest OF8 bootloader and modem, which I am on. Then flash any 5.1.1 ROM of choice followed by the version 6 Unikernel and boot up. Boots can take up to 10 minutes so do't be concerned you may be bootlooping.

Odin should say pass if a successful flash. Plus use the three button method....Power, home, volume up to boot to recovery and see TWRP. Best way to do the TWRP verification is to use three button, Pwr, home, volume down and hold to get to the first bootloader screen, then when you cancel out using volume down immediately hold the powr, home, volume up to get to the twrp screen. Make sure you have a 5.1.1 ROM of choice on your Phone along with the unikernal and before you upgrade, so that you have something to flash
If you are unsure about any of this, there are a slew of FAQ's on this stuff. So make sure you fully understand what you are doing and having the files in place PRIOR to doing anything. Like all the OPs state here, I'm not responsible for anyone bricking their phone or doing anything that makes their situation a now aht do I do to fix xyz issues. As long as you have the latest Odin mentioned in various OPs here, are comfortable with the process of using ODIN, testing their setup to make sure that your phone and cable and opertaing system have proper drivers to see your phone when in download mode etc, this should not be a big deal. That said, I don't know the level of your expertise in doing this so all I can do is warn you to check and double check you have everything in place before proceeding.

Post #8 details install guide for Tmobile users. This whole thread is a great guide for installing firmware and a 5.1.1 ROM. I'm not making a ROM recommendation since that's a personal issue, but this is a good starting choice so you should look at this thread and possible use this as a good guide for how to do stuff, including having this ROM on board you phone as a starting point. Just offering you everything I can think of before you jump in.

10.1 Note (2014 Edition - SM-P600) Continuously Reboots - Please HELP

Hello Everyone!
I'm stuck!!! If anyone can help, it is so appreciated!
I attempted to root my subject named device using ODIN following these directions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-10-2014/development/root-cf-auto-root-t2905495
Everything seems to go as planned until restart.. the tablet continuously reboots, over and over, but fails to load.
I have no clue what to do from here, so this is my only option... ask those who have much more knowledge than me!
Thanks in advance. I really appreciate your assistance.
That's called a bootloop. Something went wrong with flashing. What is a subject named device? That autoroot method only works for smp600 that is already running stock 5.1 or 4.4.2 . Boot into downloadmode using the appropriate buttons, then Download stock firmarwe from sammobile.Com and flash via Odin to get back a working device.
Which build are you on? If it is 5.1.1, that method will result in a bootloop if you try to root.
Use this instead

The tablet is a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Model SM-P600.
Not sure about the build.... but I will most definitely checkout the link you provided - thanks!
Question, can I flash a different rom rather than stock?
Also, I was just able to flash TWRP via ODIN and was able to get TWRP to load on the device. I'm hoping to flash a custom rom from the external SD via TWRP. I don't care which one at this point.. just need to get the tablet functional again and get a backup saved lol.

Here is "how to" instruction by me - post #225 for upgrade to the latest 5.1.1 and root your device. Once done and you want custom rom, just boot into twrp and flash any custom rom that you like. Let me know if you have issue.
