I have searched for the answer to this question and cannot find it, so excuse me if it has been answered somewhere else before. I have my 2013 Nexus 7 16gb and I have alot of word documents and pdfs stored on a flash drive. I also have Officesuite App installed on my tablet. However it is only reading the internal storage of the Nexus, is there anyway that I can direct it to read the flashdrive or any other app that I can download to accomplish this? I really do not want to transfer the files to my tablet as some of them are quite large and I dont want to use up the internal memory
You can use a cloud service like onedrive or Google drive so you can view it on any device.
Assuming the Office App advertises itself to open those type of files, you should be able to open them from any file manager (I use Total Commander) and you should be prompted with a list of programs capable of opening that type of file, then choose your office program....

I personally use OneDrive/Sky drive, Google Drive, and Dropbox... Not because I need all three but because I create a huge amount of documentation and I am unorganized. You never have to actually transfer stuff this way because you just save it in a replicated folder and it shows up everywhere.
IMO, the least practical is probably OneDrive, since it is generally confusing when/if you ever access it through the web.

Can anyone with an actual WP7 device confirm what kind of access they have to Skydrive? Some people are under the impression that you can stream your music and video files from there thereby explaining why some OEM's have only installed 8GB of storage on their devices.
Also, has anybody seen any 3rd party app that have access to files on a users Sky drive?

That is a fckin retarded explaination so I don't think so.
Streaming your music and other media from the Cloud simply doesn't work. We need 100% guaranteed and fast data connections at all times, something that doesn't exist for now.
To be fair even 8GB is quite a lot for some users like me
I think they should allow bigger sized phones or an SD card expansion slot for those users who do love putting lots of music / big apps / films on their phones.
I don't have a device but I'm 99% sure you can't stream music from Skydrive. I don't think they even let you put music there. But if you have a Zune pass, you can stream music from there.
Why have many OEMs been installing 8gb in so many devices? Because they're dumb and cheap.
Zune
Well skydrive is for docs and pictures.
Zune and later spotify is for music streaming.
When i first got my samsung omnia 7 i thought that 8gb was waaaay to small but i havnt filled it more then 30% yet

30% in what, a week or two, at most? If that isnt proof that 8GB is far from enough I dont know what is.
Good news... there are rumours of further integrated SkyDrive support http://www.ubergizmo.com/15/archive...ight_bring_turn-by-turn_gps_and_skydrive.html
Whether this means 3rd party apps will be able to access it though is another question.
A lot of manufacturers have been putting 8GB in phones because that is the minimum spec. Some have 16GB, and some (e.g. Samsung Focus & Dell Venue Pro) have an SD card slot as well so you can add 32GB on an SD card.
So if you want lots of storage, so for a phone with the slot. HTC phones don't have a slot.
Incidentally, Skydrive is really just online storage for synching files with your laptops, desktops and phones, using MESH. It exists so a synched copy of your file exists online AS WELL AS on your devices, should you require it. My understanding is that full support for synching with Skydrive via MESH is not currently in WP7 but is coming soon. However I understand you can copy Office / OneNote files to your Skydrive already.

No. its more than that. It's 25 gb of storage and its not just for mesh. Please do some research.
Its google docs, picasa web, and more on overdrive.
Dont expect syncing with mesh for phone. Mesh can hold up to 5gb which would cap most people's data in a day. Its a pc took. You can still access skydrive from any mobile browser anyways... But it has wp7 integration...

OK it's not *just* for MESH but that is the best way of using it because then the Skydrive copy of your files gets synched to all your devices. Mesh now uses (with the new 2011 release) all the 25GB of Skydrive if you want it to. Mesh supports PCs but you'll notice you can also add Mobile Phones to your device list.
It is Microsoft's intention to add WP7 support so that files can synch across your so-called "three screens plus the cloud" (i.e. laptop, desktop, phone and cloud).
Is there an app to access Skydrive on a WP7 device or is only web browser access currently?
at present only via the web, however i've heard that MS might be improving office a bit more to support skydrive a lot more.

Not true. At least some of them have SD slots which are accessible by opening the phone. I got a htc mozart with no warranty on ebay. Opened it, replaced 8GB storage card with 32GB. However, doing so will void your warranty.
I don't know why HTC actually implements an SD Slot without making it 'usable'.
Well, I can access SkyDrive from my phone (HTC HD7).
But i've not been able to download any of the documents onto my phone, so I can use them in MS Office.
Like other day, my mate wanted Poker rules for a party, copy and pasted them into a a Doc, put it on skydrive and went to the party, got skydrive up, looked for the document, opened it, was able to view/read it. But not able able to download onto my phone to edit it or save it or highlight key parts etc.
Unless i'm missing something, then my apologies.

This is my first post on this forum! I own a HTC HD7 since Nov 8th and seriously love it
You can download files from skydrive on the windows phone 7. Just make sure you visit the desktop version of Skydrive not the mobile. So in Internet Explorer on the wp7 go to settings make sure desktop mode is checked. Go to your skydrive location and select the file. tap lightly so youget the option to download file. I think its hidden under "more". Once you tap download, it goes directly to the office hub!
Any changes you make may need to be emailed to yourself to be sent back to skydrive again as there is currently no sync other than onenote.
Hope this helps
Hi,
I remember from owning an IPhone having to synchronise my ewallet (a password manager) files over the air from the desktop whilst the app was running on the phone. (I'll admit it was a minor annoyance).
Having moved to android and using a combination of dropbox and keepass, I don't really think about anymore - I just open dropbox and click the file and keepass opens up.
But, what about WP7? I realise that apps are only permitted to use their own storage. If I were to build a say, a keepass app for WP7, would I be back to building some desktop client software that allow syncing over the air whilst the app was running (like IPhone/ewallet), or hooking into any number of online sync services like Dropbox, Box.net, Pogoplug, etc, just to get the file some place the app can reach it.
I'm having trouble thinking of any other option given the lack of any common storage.
Thanks
If you did develop Keepass for WP7, you'd have your first customer here!
I'm actually tempted to try and port it myself, and I've come to the same conclusion as you regarding storage. The local KDB file would need to held in private storage and synchronised to an off-device copy, be that a desktop app or something like drop box.
A keepass app is one of the things I was considering. Not so sure about it now.
I'll have a look round for an elegant solution.
Well, isn't Skydrive the same as Dropbox? As I understood WP7 uses Skydrive to store your files 'in the cloud'; so why not put your Keepass file there?

I'd not considered skydrive/mesh. I'll 'ave a look.
Thanks for the heads-up.
I'm thinking of writing a desktop synching app myself. That way any WP7 app could connect to it to import files from a PC.
I've thought about using skydrive myself, but it doesn't seem to offer a way to download the file directly.
Can anyone tell me why I can execute a doc file by clicking on the doc icon in Dropbox, and the file is able to be edited and saved in OfficeSuite, but when I execute a doc file in Google Drive, it opens as it should in OfficeSuite, it's editable, but cannot be saved?
When I use Drive as my cloud storage, I CAN open a doc stored in Drive from within the app and all works just fine. The problem is when I open a doc from within Drive. Dropbox works fine for this.
I'd rather use Drive for cloud storage and I moved my docs over to Drive. There is a simple utility to opening a doc from within your cloud storage location and having the doc be editable/save-able.
Any ideas?
Not too be dumb, but that happens because it's supposed to be that way. Any type of document that you open within Drive will default to try and have Google Docs open it. I don't think that Google will ever let that default change because they want you to use Google Docs for all your document editing needs.

Not dumb - thanks for the reply!
Yeah - I thought of that, but Google wants their cloud solution to be the place where you store your stuff - all of your stuff. What a pain it is for those of us that have endless numbers of .doc, .ppt, and .xls files, if Drive will assume that each is a native file format, will fail on execution, sending the user back to start-up the originating app and opening the file from there. I would hope that someone at Google would have thought "hmmm... now this wouldn't work well for millions of users".
On the flip side, it's Google, right? So maybe you are correct!
All that I know is, Dropbox is way friendlier place to store your stuff - unless there's something that I am overlooking with Drive.
Thanks again for your thought.
Hi
I'm looking to load a cloud storage app onto my n7, does anybody have any suggestions for which one is a decent one, as never used one and there seems hundreds of them. Can they do the following, if i have a file on the n7 that i place a copy in the cloud storage and then i load a newer copy to the n7 from my main computer, will it then automatically up date the copy in the cloud. Not really bothered accessing the cloud from other devices (yet) its mainly to keep a copy of documents that are on my n7 in case something happens whilst i'm away with device. Thanks
Dropbox, Google Drive or Sky Drive. I use all three.
If you have them on your PC as well, then open the doc in the pc folder and update it. The update will be available on all devices.
Google drive. It's awesome.
Been using DB for a couple years, just started playing with GD and seems as good with more free storage. Although I read somewhere you get 25GB, only 15GB is showing up on mine. Sharing a link seems a bit more reliable on GD. Every time I use DB it gives a shortened link that doesn't seem to work in some forums, I have to actually use the app through my browser to get the whole link (or I just don't know how to copy the full link in the app). GD seems to work without issue. And everything else I use is "G" so why not switch to Drive.
Dropbox is definitely the best, but you start off with only 2 GB. Google drive gives you 15 GB for free, but I've had terrible luck with it. The syncing is just awful and I frequently end up with duplicate files or even worse deleted files. In the over 2 years I've used dropbox I've never had a file duplicated or deleted. It just works. I really tried to like Google drive since I am a huge fan of Google services (especially Android) but Google Drive has serious issues with syncing.

I too am interested in cloud storage to use just as backup. But I worry about privacy. Idiopathic there a practical way to have automatical backups *that are encrypted on my device with a key known only to me*?
I have 75GB with Dropbox

Hi all,
So I am still confused about the Sdcard permissions thing and really need this question answered before upgrading.
Im a scientist, and therefore have hundreds of saved literature articles in pdf format.
For several years, I have been putting new pdfs on dropbox for library syncing. Paired with dropsync, this would allow me to automatically sync all new papers directly to my tablet for viewing in ezPDF reader.
Is the kitkat update going to break ezPDF's ability to read and access the pdfs that dropsync is handling?
I often do not have wifi while Im reading, so a simple dropbox login that does not sync my files to the local sd card is useless to me.

You need to be rooted to be able to write to the extsd card. I am running both on kitkat but I'm rooted.

I used to auto sync photos and documents that I set up folders for on my external SD card using FolderSync. That all ended with 4.4 on my N3. It's not awful though. I moved a ton of crap and apps to external SD and my sync folders to internal SD. Samsung's My Files has full access to the external SD card and also links to FTP (what I use) and some cloud services so it's pretty easy to get files to the external SD. Set up a dual instance of My Files in multi view and you can view multiple sources at once and drag and drop between them. That includes cloud services and FTP.
