Hey everyone,
I am having issues with my external SD card, which apparently is a design part of KitKat. I have read of some fixes for other devices, but before I try any of those, do you know if they will work on the T989? If so, what fix do you recommend? Thanks in advance!
I am having no problems running HellKat which is a 4.4.2 ROM if I remember correctly. External storage seems to function fine on my device.
What issues are you having? The only issue I had was that the phone didn't allow for Mass Storage anymore and needed to use MTP/PTP. I did up a quick and dirty shell script to get around this though and I'm more than happy with the results.

I am running this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2521015
I've been happy with it for quite a while, but maybe it wasn't using my external SD when I thought it was. My external has 12.29GB avail, but my internal is full. Everything tries to download to the internal, and I get a message that download failed for no space. I was reading some on it, and it seems like KitKat doesn't really support external SD. (Unless I've interpretted things wrong, which I guess is a possibility.) I found a few workarounds online, but I haven't heard of the devs before, and I couldn't find much on XDA, so just thought I'd post it here for the experts.
Thanks!

Sounds like normal issues...look into app2sd or similar apps. And check your app default download locations. I know most default to internal.

I've been using CM10 and now 10.1 for a while now. I like it alot but im having a little issue...
I've searched XDA and found a couple of mention of this issue but no workaround or more info than the usual "yes, i'm also having this issue".
When i connect my phone to the computer, the SD card and internal storage are inverted, yet they report proper sizes.
I wouldnt mind if it was only a cosmetic issue, however i'm having issues copying files on my internal memory because my SD Card is full...
For exemple... when i plug my phone i see "SD Card" with 346mb free out of 59.4gb (using a 64gb sdcard) and i see Internal memory as 8.41gb free out of 12gb. If i want to copy a file that is bigger than 350mb on my internal memory, i have to go into "SD Card" and copy it there and then it fails to copy saying there isnt enough free space.
So yeah, while the cosmetic inversion doesnt bother me, the fact that it's checking for the required free-space in the wrong place before copying is a bit annoying.
I'm using my SD Card for music storage, i like to keep things separated and well sorted... so right now, my solution is to delete enough stuff on my SD Card so that it has more free-space than the files i want to copy on my internal storage
Any workaround other than that?

I'm not sure if there's a workaround but you could try mounting through recovery?
It sounds like a ROM problem, did you clean flash CM10.1?

I did do a clean flash. Over the holidays, i played around with AOKP and CM10.1 as i had issues getting my Wifi to work on CM10.1 and AOKP was working fine (ended up breaking in AOKP after the holidays too, had to change my router's setting from simple WPA to WPA2, but thats another story). So while playing around, i ended up wipping the phone a few times.
Sadly, i don't remember if the issue was also present in AOKP or if it was just CM10.1
I'm using TWRP, nothing shows up on my computer when i plug the phone while running TWRP. So i'm not sure...
Just for reference, here's two other posts with the same issue, both on CM10.1:

I'm not having this issue on AOKP, like I mentioned, it could be ROM specific.
As for TWRP, there should be a mount option.

Yeah, im pretty sure its ROM specific too...
For TWRP, there is a mount button, but it doesnt seem to be there for USB mounting. I couldnt find the option to mount anything on USB...
I backed up everything and ill do a complete wipe now, just to see if it fixes it...

Mount storage perhaps? Or mount internal/external.
I'm downloading a big file right now so I can't check but will check later if you haven't got it.

Well good sir, it seems like your initial assessment was quite correct. After wiping everything (Factory, cache, dalvik, format internal) and re installing CM10.1 latest nightly, my issue is fixed.
Now im reloading everything using Titanium Backup, hopefully i get all my settings back, without restoring the issue...
Thanks alot!
I've been searching the forms for awhile and wanted to ask a question on the offical rom's thread for PAC rom for the T989 GS2. I've been flashing roms for a couple years now so I have some experience with trouble shooting, and need to get my post count up. Anyways here is the problem.
I love this Rom just to start with, however, I see that a few have had issues transferring files PC to external SD or even on the PC Internal to External. I also have seen that it is a kernal issue within CM So i flashed Cerux's kernal. That helped it a bit from the phone from freezing, however, it still has issues. I am going to just re-flash the rom with the kernal and see it that helps. But, I'd like to know if there is any other way of fixing this issue. I'd hate to find a different rom because I love all the features on this. Any suggestions is helpful.
Sounds like the same issue I and a few others are having. When using usb mass storage and trying to transfer files the transfer hangs for a bit then my phone freezes up. I had to go into storage settings and enable MTP. Doesn't fix the mass storage issue but at least I can transfer files.

IDK if someone asked this already but is there a way to make sd card the primary save location instead of phone storage? I have a 32gb card and even though its much easier now to transfer files when hooked up to cpu I still prefer to save things to my card then decide what to keep on my phone storage.....
No it's not possible. Apps MUST be stored in the internal memory, which is one of the most talked about issues with the newer Samsung phones. You can only store your pictures and videos taken by the camera in the external memory.

it's not an, 'issue' with Samsung phones, it's a jelly bean 'issue' and there are workarounds like link2sd and other apps that do this for you... I'm not installing every 2gb game on the playstore on my phone so I haven't run into memory problems, yet. lot of people given ill advice

It is possible to swap internal sd to external sd with a cwm/twrp flashable zip file mod.
Here is the link to the thread, it will say Galaxy S3 but it also works on other phones
but since the S4 is so new right now, the OP did not update his thread.
It should work on our Galaxy S4 too and it cannot hurt anything to try it.
It does not format the internal or external sdcard and it does not delete any files.
Here is the link where you can get a lot more information about it and download it
if you decide to give it a try: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1772234
Good luck with it.

What are the dangers of doing this?
The dangers are that if you try it you will not be able to return to this thead and report if it works or not. Many have tried, but ALL have failed! None have come back to tell about it! (as you can see, I have not yet tried it, but if I don't respond again, you will know that I did finally try it)

I will apologize in advance for acting the village idiot but i don't get it.
I have been running the script to swap my card for the internal memory.
I have tried both Clean Rom 5.0 and Jedi x16
Tried both with different Kernels
Same Result, I get it to "Work" in that I see the "internal" memory as my 64gig card
However
All apps are still loading to the actual phone memory.
I am at a complete loss as to how I fix this. ill attempt to anwser some of the questions you may have in order to help me........
I am currently running Clean Rom 5.0 with perseus alpha36
card was formatted
ran script properly............Must have or I would have seen the swap under "storage"
Is there a step im missing? I see under app manager that the apps are still going to the actual phone memory.
I hope that made some level of sense and someone can help me out.
What is your micro Sd format?

i'm sorry bud, but android ICS and higher version are not allowed to move apps from Internal to SD. Google made the changes, but there are ways to do this and i assume you are rooted. Here it is, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889550, directory bind, i used it for a while, it works.
I have a working zip for this, it swaps the internal and external memory. You still need it?
I believe folder mount may be of some use to you.

heres the thread to it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192122
Due to size limitations (GPads only coming in 16gb varieties) I am beginning to run low on space on my Gpad (v500 running cm11). However I have a 64gb microSD card and I would like to use this as much as I can to conserve space on the internal memory.
There are a few ways to solve this but I not fully know how to do this.
Firstly, is it possible install apps to microSD card? If so, how? I know some devices support this and some do not. My phone for example does not but I have heard that some people have had success with this.
Next, there are some rather large folders on my internal storage that I would like move to my sdcard however the apps that use those folder can only read them where they are currently located (cmupdates, ebooks, etc).
I read about symlinks and managed to make a few but the only place I was able to make a symlink was to /data/media/0. But the changes to that do not show up the apps which I believe read either /sdcard or /storage/emulated/0. And for my SDcard I can get to it either in /mnt/media/sdcard1 or through /storage/sdcard1.
I tried and succeeded in making a link between /mnt/media/sdcard1/eBooks and /data/media/0/eBooks however the link does not show up in /sdcard or /storage/emulated/0 and it does not show up in the apps, leading me to believe that is where the apps read the sdcard from.
If anyone can answer the above two questions or give any other suggestions for maximizing available space on my internal card please let me know.
Thank you!
I think most of your issues could be resolved with Link2SD (under 10 posts, can't post a link to Google Play).
You can also use an app called Foldermount. It's only $.99 ( if I recall correctly) for the unlocked version. This allows you to move any folder to SD card. I like it as it guides you thru the way and will move the data for you as well. Latest version has been updated to allow apps from play store to install properly. Well worth the $1 price.

Thanks guys! Looks like using these two combined I can get exactly what I wanted. I'll use link2SD to put apps on the SD card and Foldermount to move the other folders I want moved.
Thanks again!
Can you let me know if this works for you? I can't get mine to read or write my SD card at all! I can't even move a picture from my Box cloud account to the SD card. Are you experiencing this? Or did I get a bad unit?

These solutions did work for me, I am still tweaking to get it the way I like it especially since every time I update my Rom Link2SD has to generate new scripts. I can ready and write to the SD card just fine and I could before I started using this as well. I am not sure why you aren't able to write to your sd card. Could it be a bad SD card? Try plugging it into your computer.
I've tried 2 different SD cards both of which I can move files to and from on my computer. So I know it's not the card. I'm thinking maybe I should exchange it out for another day one...

Probably... That sounds like a device issue not card.
How are the cards formatted?
The ROM you are using may not support the format.

I'm not sure I just put the card in my computer and clicked format SD card. I'm not rooted or running any special ROM, it's completely stock out've the box.
Well, if you did it from your PC, it may be formatted NTFS, and you need them formatted FAT 32. Get it here; http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html Not only allows formatting almost any format xFAT, Fat32, NTFS, etc.. and you can partition them also which is not supported by Windows, but IS supported by most Android ROMs. I doubt there is anything wrong with your device.

I have been trying to fix the issue with Rom updates and link2sd. You have to provide the Rom (in my case cyanogenmod) a backup script so it can back up the files. I am planning on figuring it out at some point but if you get it before I do would you mind posting your script? Thanks!

So a follow up with this, I was able to get a script working. I don't know if this feature is unique to cyanogenmod or not but any script in /system/addon.d will execute itself during a rom install and be restored automatically if it was wiped. So using 50-cm.sh as an example I made a script called 11-link2sd.sh to perform the backup of the mount script for link2sd which is located in /system/etc/init.d/11link2sd.
I then had insert this script and my mount script into a cyanogenmod update and flash it in. But after that I tried flashing an update of cm11 to test it and it worked! Attached is my script which should also work for anyone who is able to flash it into their /system/addon.d folder.
