I am entering a training program and want to have a heartrate monitor pair with my note II for tracking workouts. But most monitors need at least 4.3, the reason I am upgrading. Usually I just find a rom I like and use it for a long time because it takes so many hours to get everything working just the right way.
I was wondering though since I am on Sprint if anything would change if I upgrade? Right now I can tether and use my laptop with 4g and even play games and get a decent ping. I don't want that to be jeopardized, so what are potential complications.

Don't actually update but flash one of the custom roms. 4.4.2 is the best choice. 4.3 is buggy and slow. Make sure you read the whole OP of the rom your going to use. There are some things that you must do to get full functionality. Now for tethering you either need to use a mod or 3rd party app.
Sent from my GT-N7105 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
You mean tethering is different in 4.4.2? The rom I will be flashing to has tethering listed as a feature so I assume that it is okay.

Guess it is aosp rom? I was stuck in thought and refering to touchwiz since you said 4.1.2 to 4.4.2. You should have no tethering issues with aosp. No matter aosp or touchwiz the performance and battery life will improve.

Are all custom roms at this point capable of reading exfat? I know it was a problem in the past... I am looking at dirty unicorn and liquid smooth roms but I can't see anything in the description that tells me...
Sent from my SPH-L900 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
All touchwiz roms do. Not all aosp do. I dont uses exfat so I don't pay attention to which roms have it. Converting over to fat is not hard then you never have to worry either.

Maybe some else will chime in but I am pretty sure all 64 gigs work as fat/fat32.

I know that can format it work as fat32 or exfat.

+1 I have a 64gb card formatted as fat32 and I've ran all types of roms.
It's been my understanding that the FAT32 file system limits a single file's size to 4GB (see here). Normally, a FAT32 partition can be no larger than 32GB, but I remember using a utility on a Windows machine years ago that somehow broke that rule.

If you use a format utility and increase the cluster size (4k is default with max file of 4 gig) it allows for larger file use.

I did have some trouble moving the apps, but i am a noob with android, I just uninstalled it all and re-downloaded them on playstore (couldn't figureout titanium pro) it downloaded on the new 64gb, all the apps run great i didn't notice any lag at all, everything seems to be downloading to the 64gb I'm HAPPY!

I also like to have the option and I am glad to see that it can be done.
I got a 64gig card as well, and really don't see the point using apps2sd anymore. 10gb free on the phone is a lot of apps, but I'm also a pretty light user compared to most.
Unfortunately, running you SD card as internal memory puts a tremendous amount of strain on the card. There's a high chance of corruption at some point in time, then you're screwed. I prefer something like https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.slf.ListglApp

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
Both drop box and CX have apps available in the play store. Drop box gives you 2 GB free storage but CX gives you 10 GB. MediaFire gives you 50 GB but has no android app. (Apparently a MediaFire app is under development). The one thing to say about all of them is that upload/download speeds are less than desirable......

What if one day you will no longer use a Samsung phone? SD is a must, cloud storage (any) is just an available options that eventually forces you to (extensively) use data and to give away you privacy - of course there will be others who will swear by it and unfortunately Samsung is the only manufacturer still making phones with external SD support. Anyway, consider these 2 arguments and make your educated choice.
I keep everything on an SD card AND backed up to Dropbox. In the past I've lost an SD card when it fell out of my hand and into a friends front porch with no possible way to retrieve it. I would have lost everything if I didn't have my Dropbox backup.

If you root and rom your phone will it get rid of the 9gig of bloat? Like if the rom takes up 3 gigs will it free up 6 gigs that Samsung stock takes up or just add to it and make it 12 gigs used?

Rooting has nothing to do with bloatware or bloat, before and after rooting the free space will basically remain the same.
Rooting never affected the free or used space of any android phones.
With the stock or rooted stock rom the free space will not change.
Also your math about free and used space just don't seem to compute.
But in any case I wish you the best of luck.
(you will need it).............
Thanks. I wasn't using exact math just random numbers to get a point across. I just know our phone comes with 8gigs of free space and the other 8 gigs are being used by Samsung. My question was if we rooted are we able to take back some of that space Samsung uses or does the rom just take away from the space allocated to use by Samsung
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
After you root use a program called titanium backup to freeze or uninstall bloat.
Or once rooted flash a bloat free Rom.
Yes, you get the space back

That's where you are wrong, our phones come with 16gb and the free space is almost 10GB before you add any apps or anything else in it.
As soon as you root the phone and flash a good custom rom the free space will go up at least 500MB
because when the devs create these custom roms they usually remove a lot of bloatware.
A good custom rom after being debloated and deoxedized and whatever else the devs do to it takes up approx 1.2GB or less, usually less.
Thats what i wanted to know thank you.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
Hi xda! i have a question for the devs,
The samsung galaxy note 2 has 16gb internal storage but only 10gb is available
so i discoved that partitions such as cache have 1gb allocated but is 99% empty so is there a way to repartition and claim back some space?
Because aosp installed on a 16gb system should leave 13.3gb space free for user data i understand that touchwiz is Bloated but still why is there too much space allocated to the system partitions
Aosp rom need not to think for OTA.
Samsung have to keep provision for it, we xdaian are just less than 10 % who customizing rom with Odin. 90% are still depends on official update. In case there is major release like 4.3 or klp release for note2 then it may need huge space.

Dont know but there could be some form of swap/pagefiling to improve the ram of the phone.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
But the question is is it possible to reclaim this allocated space without any issues for those who don't rely on OTA updates. I plan to stick with aosp roms.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Well why reclaim it back if it could be turned into swap or what ever android systems use to increase ram.

Yeah it does but I can't figure out which app would be the cause...been monitoring with better battery stats and doesn't list a contributor. Uninstalled music hub with titanium backup and I don't use Google music...can't seem to lock down the cause.

this ^^^ may be your issue. a corrupt image, music, video file somewhere on your sd. a lot of ppl say to back up everything on yer sd card to a pc, and then reformat, then add back the contents. i know that stopped it for some. otherwise youll have to figure out what file is corrupted.
when i had a corrupted file, it was a picture that had about 80% of the image on it and the other 20% was just grey. (yep that was corrupted) so i deleted it..
this wonderful app also stops your 'media' process/scanner. you can disable it and enable it and it worked wonders for me in the past, but now CarbonRom has a media scanner toggle built in
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.addz.mediascannerroot please read description and use at your own risk.. like maybe make a nand first.
just an FYI, the service that gets very high when youre listening to lots of music is 'mediaserver' - which is not related to the 'media' process
Thanks to everyone for all of your input! You guys have been a huge help knocking this little annoyance out!!

Yeah sounds like you're having issues with the external SD. Mediascannerservice is what scans for media on SD cards. I've had that issue before and it was a pita! Reformatted and everything was fine till I added all my files then it returned. One of the files (a movie) was no good. It got corrupted and would still play so I never thought anything of it till I tried *watching* the whole movie one day and it cut off with an unsupported message at like 40 mins through. Once I deleted that and rebooted never had the issue again.
