My almost brand new Desire HD just can't locate me sometimes, despite having fix on 8-10 satellites.
I use GSP Status, A-GPS is on.
One day it locate me in a few seconds, and on the other day it takes 10 minutes, sometimes even more.
Just before I wrote this post, I've reset my A-GPS data, downloaded new and went out to try it. I was walking for 5 minutes and I've got fix on satellites, with good signal strength. So I've switched of the phone, reset A-GPS, download again and still can't get location.
My brother with his HD2 has no problem getting location.
Do you think that I should contact HTC???
thanks
its normal...it all depends how fast the sat..communicates with dhd... i too have same issue...but it is place specific issue not dhd... enjoy man
My one tends to behave like that too. There are many environmental factors that affect the signal of the satellites seen. Also I find that if one app gets a GPS fix, switching to other apps seems not to pickup the coordinates from previous fix.

Mine is faulty too...!
Yes I say faulty, becource my sonyericsson x10 ALWAYS get a lock on the location within 10 sec...
Even when I compare them side by side, the x10 works MUTCH better...
By a 10:1 factor or so...
And it is also mutch more accurate when it is locked on to the gps...
Also about 10:1...
Htc make fine phones, not so mutch gps...
I had a thread about this, here a few days back...

A longshot, but would plugging in headphones help increase GPS signal? I always wondered whether they could make such a mechanism for even boosting the 2G/3G/Wifi signal. Given they've already exploited this for FM antenna...

My gps locks in 3secs in my back garden with only 5 satellites turn satellite layer on and it shows location it back garden not the nearest road SO IT'S NOT FAULTY IT'S NOT THE HARDWARE. It's the silly gps apps you using you don't need them just turn on gps open Google maps that's it the only gps app I use is gps toolbox for calibration that's it as for comparing to the x10 haha a great phone NOT
From England with leedroid dhd techo!
Just reboot your phone, make sure your in the car or clear view of the sky and try again.

Probably wont work as the antenna for GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth is under the battery cover.

Are you shure that the gps antenna is there ?
I have tried to remove the two covers on the phone and didn't see any difference in the gps signal...
But I have been thinking about why there is terminals on both covers...

Well, I'm not too sure where the GPS receiver is located, but I'm definitely sure that the GSM antenna is under the SIM cover and the WiFi/BT antenna is below the battery cover.
The GPS antenna is in the plastic cover surrounding the flash LEDs.

I've tried to get a lock on DHD and HD2 phone by phone and HD2 got lock in a few seconds and my DHD just couldn't. So it's not place issue.
So yesterday I rooted and flashed my G2 with Virtuous G-Lite and it works great. Much more responsive and snappy...
However I was told that this is the best ROM to use for a longer battery life but the battery seems to drain just as much or more than before...
Battery monitor says display is using most of the battery, but even during times of standby the battery seems to drain.
Is there anything I can do to figure out where all my battery is going? I just got the phone 3 days ago from a warranty exchange with a new battery so I doubt it's the battery itself.
Also, sometimes the wifi reception is really poor despite being right next to my router and it was also not bad before I changed to g-lite. is there anything I can do to help wifi reception? My browser seems to have a hard time loading web pages fully but I think it's due to the instability of the wifi signal, although if there is a known problem with the browser on g-lite...i'm just not sure.
If there is a specific app that is killing my battery how would I find out which one it is? Gmail is the only thing that I have auto-syncing to the best of my knowledge. are there other common offenders that might be doing me in?
Any help greatly appreciated!

GPS is fantastic. By far the best i have seen on a smartphone to date (I'm making a comparison between the Desire HD, SGS2, Desire & iPhone)
GPS connects in between 2 & 5 seconds and i have not had a dropped signal using Navigator.
My 2 cents worth....
I agree. No issues with GPS. locked to within 40 meters from inside a restaurant and once out side got a much closer lock right away. Tested using GPS Status and Google Maps.
Does the nexus use the glonass satellites like the galaxy note? Could someone please run GPS test or something similar and see if it uses sats in the 70's range, as well as the regular 1 - 24.
Not that I can tell:
Great to hear, I was concerned because the gs2 has a very lame GPS connection

My Nexus has a much better GPS than my N900 or HTC Kaiser, although it seems to have difficulty indoors AND you have to enable the wifi to get a better signal putting further strain on the battery.
It also adds almost an extra km to my 13.7 (now 14.5) daily commute. Is this like the 'measuring the coastline of Britain' fractal paradox?
Any stand alone GPS navigation app works?
I am not talking about Google Maps, because that is obvious.
But, apps like Sygic 11.2.x, CoPilot, etc.
Sygic doesnt seem to. Please update my app compatibilty thread with others you find not working!
Want to hear more..
I am using Vibrant and it is very frustrating...
And I heard SGSII is not good either...
I don't know if I trust Samsung anymore
I read somewhere it uses the barometer(not thermometer ) to add another dimension to the localisation process.

Is that using just pure GPS or A-GPS?
This alone would get me to upgrade from Nexus S.
How's the GPS inside a partially obstructed view like a bus or something? My Nexus S takes like 2-5 mins.
NOTE: I don't have a data plan, so not using A-GPS but pure GPS
Hopefully this isn't a pain for anyone, but could one of you fine European gentlemen with Nexus' do me a favor?
Go outside, download GPS STATUS & Toolbox (I want to see accuracy of Meters, not feet) and post a screenshot.
Outside of my house, my Samsung Droid Charge will NEVER lock below 5 meters, while my Thunderbolt and Incredible with lock to 1 or 2.
You may ask, what's the big deal?
Well, it's the difference between Google Maps knowing I'm at my house, or my neighbors.
Thanks!
Can anyone please test if the GPS is usable when data network(HSPA) is disabled, like in Flight Mode with GPS enabled?
Thanks!

I'll try again tomorrow for u dude, it locks super quick which is pretty good for me
I guess if it locks really quickly I can be satisfied with that. I honestly feel that there is something wrong with Samsung's GPS chips and rather than trying to fix it, they added a barometer to help

Hi. Battery drain in sleep mode is really good. Around 0.5 % an hour. But when using 3g internet, battery drain is massive, around 3% per minute. My friend was using his iPhone with similar usage to mine, his drained from 75% to 50%, mine drained from 73% to 20%!
I have brightness on low, GPS and Bluetooth off, and I am using radio 26.13.04.19 which is one that I have found to be good and reliable. Is there anyway to reduce my drain? It's way too much right now. Thank you!
Sent from my desire hd using XDA
3% per minute while screen is off means your phone isn't going into sleep mode.
I guess there's an app that keeps your 3G modem active.

No, I think you misunderstand. 3% per minute while using my phone (ie: when screen is on). Like I said, when screen is off, drain is only 0.5% per hour.
Try to switch to EDGE, I had it too before. The drain was caused by a bad and cell tower signal. By switching to EDGE the signal went better, same as the battery drain. Only uses 3G if you're signal/reception is good(above 3 bars).
you can turn off Wifi GPS BT and of course the screen brightness .
iyou need to activate sleep mode beacuse when in this mode you almost dont have battery drain ....

Jesus. I just spent 1 minute on facebook and had 4% battery drain! Using mobile network (getting 3 bars of 3g signal). Why does android have to do this to me. I'm jealous of iphone battery life
2-3% per minute during 3g session is pretty normal ,even I am having the same drain ,I have spent months and tried all the tricks in the book (uv script ,reduce CPU speed)to reduce the drain all my efforts have gone down the drain I think we have to live up with this sort of drain...

i agree.
i've given up trying to solve my batt issues. i've got icecoldsandwich 6.1. BT,GPS and WIFI is always on. cellular data is on WCDMA preffered. under volted, under clocked and even low vibration mod. screen brightness is at 10%. still drains at 3% per min when using the data. i've got a brand new battery from HTC service centre during this time and it doesnt help. i even started to think that my charging circuit was screwed up :|
got really paranoid..
but i guess the battery drain is pretty normal given the battery capacity
There are some build.prop tweaks that you could try. Related to sleep mode and hsdpa power collapse. Look through this page and add whichever are network and battery saving related (mentioned). Look through your current /system/build.prop and only add what isn't already there. If it's already there, just change the values.

To save my battery I have started to use Tasker, this is a profile manager. For example You can set up your phone to switch On Data and sync your apps every 30 min or more, instead of have it On all the time. There is a lot of options to set up your phone. For me it is working great and it helped me to lower daily battery drain. You can find other Profile Managers on Google Shop.

That doesn't help with the 3% per minute while awake.
And switching data on every 30 minutes often means that you can forget using apps like whatsapp and viber. Most of the time people rely on messages arriving shortly after they were sent.
Image your boyfriend/girlfriend sitting outside in the car and texting you "hurry up! we need to go!!" and you get that message 30 minutes later....
And consider using Llama....it's mostly the same as tasker but free
There is an app called battery calibration that can help with battery life. It helped me

I know it's still early but has anyone else found Jellybean to have worse battery life compared to ICS? I'm totally stock with only the bootloader unlocked. Usually after a full day use with ICS I have 30% left and with JB I'm around 15%. On a day with heavy use I'm sure I will have to charge in the middle of the day which is very inconvenient. I'm trying to see if it's JB itself or some app which is draining things now that I'm on JB.
I'm finding it to be significantly better actually. I couldn't make it through a full day on ICS most days. With JB i'm easily above 30% most days at end of the day.
Maybe its because you like more your phone now and therefore you spend more time playing with it

Mine seems worse compared to 4.0, phone doesn't go to deep sleep and keeps waking up ... maybe it's my Exchange email account, but this was fine when I was on 4.0.
How is your phone sleeping?
This may seem a strange suggestion, but I've found that leaving wi-fi on, even when I'm not using a wi-fi network seems to even out the battery drain. Helps to get Google Now working 100% as well. So try that when you can. I've found it works fantastically for me.

Stock vs. stock ROMs (both using LeanKernel as well) I've found Jellybean to actually have better battery life. I managed four hours of screen on time with the stock battery yesterday and today, something I could never come close to accomplishing with stock ICS.
turn off wifi, gps and 3g, and you'll go far. Turn em on only when necessary. I leave google now on. I'm only at 40% after 22 hours. Granted it defeats the purpose of a smartphone, but if I'm at work, working...then I don't need all those things turned on.
Turn off Google now of you don't really use it. I loved playing with it for a few days and realized it wasn't THAT useful for me I only really used weather. I keep the voice search active and turned the cards off. I just use a decent weather widget and maps WHEN I'm travelling if worried about time. HUGE battery saving. So many (understandable) wakelocks when activated.

It's weird, it seems the battery life is worse, but it could be that I'm using it more than before. The on-screen time does seems slightly better than on ICS, but I'm going to need more testing before I can confirm...

Hmmm...I will try that out, thanks. Google now was fun to play with the first couple days but if it means I need to charge middle of the day forget it. I will try turning it off and see what kind of results I get.
For the record, I've left all my GPS, Wifi and sleep settings intact from ICS so those settings shouldn't have effected my battery life.
I don't care for Google Now, just the new voice search part.

I'm actually getting better battery life on Jelly Bean than I was on Ice Cream Sandwich. Running at a higher clock isn't the only thing (or the main thing, I think) that gives Jelly Bean it's buttery smoothness.
Google really put effort into improving Vsync on the device, which mainly gives the device that buttery feel.
