[Q] Notifications wont show when screen off - B510 - Huawei Ascend P6, Mate

Hi everyone
I just updated to KitKat B510, NEEurope version. The problem is, that whatever I receive, a whatapp message, an email, the notification wont pop-up (no sound, no nothing), until I unlock the phone.
I don't think it's a WiFi problem (or it might be, it is set to "always keep WiFi on"), because when I unlock the phone, the network is ok, everything is connected.
Please, an advice?

Had the same problem occuring sometimes. Mine had a log of lost network. I dont know if there is a fix. Try factory reset and if that wont help flash b510 again. If its still present, revert to b132.

Thank you. I didn't see the network to drop, I think there is a problem with the sleeping setting.
I made some changes, I changed the profile to normal battery consumption, not smart or ultra battery.
The second was to uncheck WiFi optimization, in settings wifi-> options-> advanced.
Let's see how it goes from now on.

You did the right steps. It should be fine now.

For instance, I have to open facebook after restart, so I can receive notifications (it is set to on at startup manager, it is set to run when screen is off etc.).
But the worst problem is that it doesn't reconnect automatically to known networks. For instance, I come home, my previous phone was reconnecting automatically to my home wifi network, but the P6 not.
I had to go to settings->wifi and then it reconnected (without doing anything more).
Any idea?

But I just did it yesterday, when I reistalled B510.

Didn't work. I wiped everything and still it does the same.
Wi-Fi does not automatically connect to networks whose configurations were already saved. I have to take it to waranty, I don't know what to do more.

Does it work on b132? Mine did that sometimes too on b510. It didnt connect automatically. The avaivable network list came up and had to choose one manually. It remembered passwords.
Im not sure but I think that happened only when connecting to a different wifi than the one used before.

I didn't use it that much on B132, I made the update as soon as I bought it.
It is normal not to connect to a new network, but it's not normal not to connect to a previous used network, known network, for instance at home.
Maybe I'll upgrade to 4.4.4, but I think it will do the same.

Data Issues

Posted this @ PPC ... wanted to see if someone over here could shed some light on this for me... I have searched and the only things that I come up with are to disable the connection (manually, nodata... etc), and "there has to be something keeping it active"
It seems like many of us are having issues with the data connection not terminating after x amount of seconds. (myself included) What I am seeing with my own phone is that it will connect, download data, then go to idle (yet still active) It never seems to enter the inactive state, which is where the disconnect feature comes into play. I have searched the registry, and the only disconnect references that I can find all point to it being in the inactive state.
Does anybody know where the registry entries would be that directs the data connection to go from active/idle to inactive? I can confirm that my phone is connected by the solid white arrows next to the 3G icon, but when you bring up SPB Wireless, it shows no current activity.
Hopefully this provides enough clarification so that someone with more RegEdit experience can chime in...

Do you by any chance have Microsoft Direct Push enabled? That will try to maintain your data connection.
(I've seen active sync go pretty wierd things. Nothing a good "End task" wont fix..)

Well... here's the thing.... I have disabled direct push for the internet... but I am not sure where the Microsoft direct push is. I have noticed on occasion that the direct push will be active (but greyed) momentarily when i close the data connection.... maybe that has something to do with it....
So now where is the direct push disable?

Are you using Activesync? Look under schedules there.. If you say "As items arrive", it will try to maintain the connection.
Nope, direct push will try to use the data connection first - so when u turn off the data connection, it will turn off, but you can turn it back on over wireless.

No active sync.... iv even deleted poutlook from the startup, as I only have pop/imap accounts set up for manual download....
Like i said tho... i find it odd that it will open the connection, stay active (but idle), and never go into the inactive state....
The behaviour is by design on Windows Mobile. Imagine having to reconnect again and again and again on your PC's broadband connection after a period of inactivity.
You can also disconnect right there and then by pressing the END CALL key for 3 seconds.
What is odd, is when I first got the phone it did not do this behavior... but with that said... and the fact that there is no noticeable change in battery life, I guess it becomes sort of moot....

[Q] Grey signal and WiFi bars?

Hi all,
I was just wondering why sometimes my signal and WiFi bars turn grey and often can't make/send calls/data. I thought no signal or WiFi was indicated differently, especially since I can get full grey bars I doubt it's a signal problem.

it means that you are not logged into google services.
and since most of the apps run with google services (stock browser as well), if you are not logged in, they will not response and keep trying.
if somehow u have other browser like dolphin, or firefox, it should still work.

Thanks. Is there anyway you can force it to reconnect? It seems to be happening more and more lately
There isn't a lot you can do if the phone is stock. You can pull the battery often to see if that helps, check your' network settings and make sure that it is all set correctly. Finally master reset and re-log into your' gmail account.
Other option is to unlock the bootloader and root the device:

This happened to me the other day, was so annoying!
Although the blue bars do show whether it's connected to Google services etc, there must be more to it as I couldn't make any calls or anything like that. I went in and out of airplane mode, restarted the phone etc but nothing helped, so I just assumed it was something to do with my network and left it for a while and it sorted itself out in the end.
I have the stock phone. I forced it to see the network by going to Settings, Wireless & Networks, More, Mobile Networks, Network operators. This will force a scan to see what networks are available. Pick AT&T (assuming that who your provider), and it should turn on the Cell Service.
If it does not work, try going to an AT&T owned store and ask for a new Sim Card. (That is what I had to do.) They put it in with no questions, except for marveling at my wonderful SGN. No plan or feature changes happened.
For the Wifi, that is different. Go to Settings, Wireless & Networks, Wifi (and turn it on). You can re-scan for networks anytime. I had 11 networks in range, so it took some looking to find mine. You may need to re-enter the security settings several times to get it right. (Delete old settings by using "forget" below the network you select.) Once it works, it should keep on working with no further adjustments, at least mine does that.
When signals are seen, the grey icons will show blue as a signal strength. (I'm not sure they are accurate.)

I used to get this sometimes on all of my Android devices. Simple way to sort it out and sign back in? Your data/wifi is still active - just open Google Talk, go to the list of contacts on it (not in a message, as in you've just signed in) and it'll connect and sync itself straight away... 10 second job, no need to pull out a battery, flash random things, or anything else.

I was pretty shocked to see the suggested methods previous to Gtalk...
If anyone else knows a better way, please share!
Best method is to sort through the code and fix the problem, unless you are all on at&t (which you're not) which would suggest a network issue. However, I have used nearly every android device available...even a few I'm not very proud of. I have never had this issue. My point is Google talk may work and be helpful, but its not a solution/fix.

It's happened to me a couple of times so clearly not just AT & T nor even just the USA. I waited it out, next time I'll try the Google talk method (not sure if it'll work, Google Voice not currently available in Aus.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I'm on O2 in the UK, so it isn't just a States issue as Clancy is experiencing it in Australia too.
I've narrowed it down today though. I've noticed that I only get grey bars when connected to WiFi, and sometimes even then I can't make/receive calls. Pretty much as soon as I disconnect the WiFi and get connected to the mobile network I get reconnected to Google's servers and the bars turn blue again. Weird.

Mobile Network Traffic despite WLAN connected

when my HOX is lying near by PC Speakers, i can hear Internet Traffic over EDGE/UMTS excatly all 3 Minutes. (I hope u can understand what i mean)
I´m wondering about that bescause WIFI is active and connected, and i never had this with my DHD.
Due to optimizing Battery life, i disable mobile Network manually when i´m at home and have WIFI connected.
I use ARHD 9.1.0 with stock Kernel and EQS + APM + %Batterycircle + Autobrighness by jotha.
Baseband: 2.1204.135.20
Build; 2.17.401.2 CL89015
Any Ideas whats generating this traffic and why the HOX don´t use WIFI for that?
its normal gsm traffic. like if somebody sent you an sms, you would hear that sound. not sure why it didn't do it with dhd and now does with hox, but either way, shielded speakers are there to solve that problem. as for adapting your current speakers to shield them, not sure if its possible or not though.

Thanks for your Answer, but i don´t hear that Traffic if mobile Network is disabled, so i thinkt it can´t be "normal GSM Traffic".

might be network location services?

i know the location services use wifi as well, but it might use mobile network in conjuction even if connected to wifi.. try disable that and see if it continues.

try download osmonitor, might be other apps more specific that can help, but osmonitor should do the trick i hope.
set your screen not to turn off, just for ease..
goto the connections tab, process tab will also be useful and watch it until the noise happens. you're looking for either a process, that jumps to the top of the list when the sound happens (spike in cpu usage), and then does it every time the sound happens, or a connection, that ISN'T your local or external wifi ip address, but also has similar behaviour, ie the connection is created when the sound occurs, and is then gone a minute later.. (the connection should show an app name)
if you find an app that looks like it could be causing it, then try to uninstall it temporarily to see if it fixes the issue. if it does fix the problem, the next step would be to contact the developer of that app to request a fix for it. it could however be a system process causing the problem.
failing the above, you could try the same sort of diagnostics, but with logcat instead. i don't actually know how to initiate logcat, i'm sure a google will tell you how though.

When it starts and i unlock my screen i cant see any new entries in the Connectionstab.
Processes the same, but "Android System" shortly came on Top. (maybe the Display Unlock is the Reason for that?)
BTW: Why i got 2 permanent open Connections?
1. Google Bookmark-Sync (Whois -> Google)
2. Downloadmanager (Whois -> "The New York Internet Company")
Not idea what that could be.

you should be able to set the display to never turn off in settings>display and gestures
i don't think it'll be very easy if even possible to find it if the screens off (the spike would only be there for a second or 2, by the time it's unlocked etc it will have disappeared)
the other connections, first one is probably the google account sync, and not sure about download manager, maybe something got stuck, you could try clearing data for the download app, but to be honest i doubt that they're any problem anyway so probably nothing to worry about
edit: the download manager bit judging by the whois could be an app relating to that? do you have anything similarly named installed?

This is crazy - when the screen is on, the sound isnt audible. It only happens when the screen is off.
In the Connections Tab is only one Connection without my WiFi-IP, and whois shows me its a DNS Server from my Carrier (vodafone).
In the Process Tab i can see that "System" comes up on Top for ca 2 seconds, further no action.
The 2 Connections which stays established:
Clearing the Donwloadmanager Data was a Success... Thanx again.
The Connection to Google from "Google Bookmark-Sync" is still there. Gmail Sync is deactivated in accounts.
I think i´ll give it up and live with it

Preparing Network ongoing

So I got a Galaxy Tab 3 for free with my new Galaxy S5 yesterday. And on the notification bar there is a prompt saying preparing network. I have full bars on the signal but have no connection to the network. I tried rebooting, turning on airplane mode and trying to reboot the signal. But have no luck.
Is there anything that I can try to fix this? The Tab is stock and I haven't changed anything yet...
Any help would be great!!
Which tab 3 model?
Are you on the "right" network? Does you network have a hidden SSID? Are you using any security on the network? Check the network settings on your PC and copy them to the tab. If you are not sure, then open your network and see if the tab connects. If so, then you can close the network again.
I have the same issue but mine is working all networks. It started when I tried to connect to a new wifi at a wing place and the icon has been on ever since.

I havent figured out anything , I have tried messing with sync and wifi options and nothing has changed.
I have looked at all the "Tab 3" devices since you did not indicate what model you have. With that in mind the search is very broad and data found could/could not be affecting your connectivity. But this is what I found.
All Tab 3, except Tab 3 Lite 7, use 802.11 a/b/g/n WLAN Standards. The Tab 3 Lite 7 only has 802.11 b/g/n. Why? I don't know.
So, make sure that your location has one of the three, 802.11 b/g/n working. You tab should auto acquire unless you have a setting that is specifically looking for a unique channel. Confirm all your parameters and the parameters of the WiFi source.
tab 3 prepping service solved
Ok so got 2 tab 3s from sprint today and same issue. To resolve this.......they are not activated! Run on wifi and go to settings and at the bottom left it will show a small phone icon and say activate this device. Click on that and let the live activation happen. The tab 3 will then reset and function on sprint networks!
Ok so that takes care of it initially and then it comes back on switching to and from wifi. You can get rid of the icon by going into the app manager, select all apps, and force stop samsung dm. Looks like it is a samsung software issue to me!
Man, the folks at Sprint aren't even aware of the issue yet. My Tab3 just sat there and wouldn't activate or connect at power on. So I have to skip all setup and go to activate in settings and it activated. Tried a factory restore so I could do setup again and no connection again and the preparing network problem. Switching to CDMA works. On the phone with support for like 30 minutes and they couldn't see my device on the network at all even while on LTE. Thanks for service reference. I was going to return this unit until I saw it was a software issue. It makes for a nasty setup/activation with no wifi around.
Sometimes activation fails and just gives a LTE error, sometimes it fails and sends data usage stats. When it completes it posts a backup pin and phone number. I'm guessing this happens with store pickups because they let it update on powering it up and that broken service starts messing things up.
Go to settings and then to activate this device and as soon as it starts to try and activate its self press the volume down 4 times and then you will see a screen that says IQTHiddenMenu....Scroll down to LTE mode and select it you will see a screen thatb has four boxes on it...select the one that says "enable LTE Mode" after you selct that then just hit back button a few times and let it try and activate again and this should fix your issues. You may have to do this twice. For the last 2 weeks this has been the only way we can activate anyones tablet is using this method, it has somehting to do with our Network not communicating properly with the Tablet.

Hidden screens. One has to love technology. So then one also has to ask, what else is the tablet doing that we do not know about? Reporting back to the mother ship?
Solution
So I had this same problem and I called sprint today and they were able to help me. THIS WILL RESET YOUR TAB AND YOU WILL LOSE EVERYTHING ON IT. Make sure to back up if you have anything important.
You have to open the calculator and type (+30012012732+ when the next screen pops up, type ##786#, the RTN menu will open, press Reset, it will ask you for your MSL, type it in and that will do it. Hope it helps.
BTW you will have to find a way to find your MSL as I never had to. I'm sure if you call your carrier they will give it to you once you tell them why you need it.

Looks like they are still having this issue. Mine was stuck on Preparing network. 3G and wifi worked, but no LTE or GPS. I did the hidden menu trick and now that all works, but I still have the "preparing network" notification. Is there any way to remove this? Could I do a ##RTN to clear network configs, then enable LTE through hidden menu, then activate?
Something to try that worked for me for the time being
I just thought I would share with anyone else having issues with the persistent Preparing Network message.
If you go to Settings>Activate Device and launch the Self Service application, there is a hidden menu accessible via the Menu Key, And you can then choose Reset Cellular Data.
Your device will then reboot, and it will go through Self Provisioning when it reboots.
I Had to do this twice, and 2nd time seems to have been the charm this time as the Preparing Network Message is gone!
Finally got rid of "Preparing Network"!

I spent 2 hours on with Sprint live chat, did a Kies reset, software hard reset, and everything else I could find...yet this solution was the simplest and the only one that actually worked!
Someone let Sprint support know how to fix their own device, please!

This is a common problem with an easy fix.* Long press the notification on the task manager.* A button will appear saying APP INFO.* Press that and you will see the app info page.* Clear the cache and data and more inportantly, deselect the notification checkmark.* Thats it!...*

Just got it on a new SG Tab3 7" and it cleared the "Preparing Network" icon. I had done a MSL reset yesterday and it had cleared it before I bricked it. I returned it, got a new one and it cleared it on its own after the 4.4.2 update.
Solved!
I solved mine after several weeks. First, oddly enough this error was preventing me from getting the 4.4.2 android update and the system said the operating system was up to date on 4.2. You need to download the samsung Kies program into your computer and perform a manual firmware update. The system will tell you that indeed you have the latest update but you'll do it any way. Once the OS is reinstalled, you will see that the PRL will be updated properly, which is the reazon for this problem. Then the system will allows you to receive the 4.4.2 upgrade which does not suffer from this problem. The key is to upgrade to android 4.4.2.

Question Captive portal driving me nuts

Tl;dr I have to log in to my work's guest wifi every day, but I didn't before. Nobody else does. Auto connect is set to on, but it doesn't work like it used to/is supposed to. My pixel 3 that I brought in works just fine.
Longer: I connect to a guest network at work every day that's meant for employee personal devices. (I use a homebrew VPN for this.) Before the issue started, I'd periodically (maybe once/month if that) have a notification when I arrived to sign in, and you click agree in a captive portal and you're on your way. Other than that it auto connects just like at home. A few weeks (?) ago however, I've started having to do this every day. If I'm disconnected for over roughly an hour (say if I leave and come back during the day) I have to do it again, and if I reboot my device I also have to sign in again. If I just toggle wifi on and off quickly then it automatically connects just fine.
Ordinarily this wouldn't be a huge deal, but where I work I basically get no cell coverage. I also have a couple tasker profiles that I've been using for years to do stuff (vibrate mode, silence media, etc) when I arrive to work, and these don't/won't trigger until I have a minute to log in. Ideally these would trigger as soon as I'm within range of the building, as I've been doing for years now.
None of my coworkers have this issue, everyone that I've asked all say their devices automatically connect just fine, as mine used to. I brought in my old pixel 3 to compare and test the behavior, and my pixel 3 works just fine, even though it hasn't been to my work in many months.
I'm assuming this is something related to my device. Because it happens if I reboot, but not if I quickly disconnect and reconnect, I'm imagining maybe something isn't being cached correctly?
If anyone can help me fix this I'd be very grateful!
(Running full stock unrooted all up to date on both phones.)

Just for the heck of it, have you tried:
Forgetting the network after logging into it.
Gone into your WiFi Saved Networks, forget any that look like it's your work's guest network, if any.
Turn airplane mode on.
Reboot.
Turn airplane mode off.
Log into it fresh.
See if it sticks the next day/time.
I'm pretty much grasping at straws, but worth a try if you haven't already.
More extreme measures are:
Settings / Apps / See all 999 apps
3-dot menu: Show system
Search icon
Search for both WiFi and for Wi-Fi and clear app cache and data for all of them.
Be prepared to possibly have to log back into all Wi-Fi networks you normally do.
Ultra extreme measures:
Factory reset, set the phone back up only with what you really require at first, and don't do much with the phone until you test it with your work's guest Wi-Fi for a couple of days, hopefully without trouble. If it works fine, continue installing apps in smallish groups prioritizing what's most important. Hopefully, everything keeps working or at least has worked at least after the factory reset.
Disregard below.
Any other pertinent details? Rooted? Custom kernel? Even unlocked bootloader and verity and verification disabled? I assume none of these, but just have to ask.

Tried 1-7 already. Rebooting makes me sign in again, regardless whether or not airplane mode is on. I nuked my entire network settings (the little circle arrow in the top right corner of the network settings page) and that didn't solve it either. (But I did have to wait for my sim to reprovision...) I absolutely will not factory reset, but given that I already did a network reset I don't think that would help.
As far as the timeframe, I'm thinking this might have popped up after the January patch. I installed that while I was on a brief vacation; unfortunately don't remember if I had the issue before I left or not.

I also tried looking for anything related to WiFi in all apps as suggested and anything that comes up there shows no cache/user data to clear, with clear storage and clear cache buttons greyed out.

Wait, I just tried something else - I switched from randomized mac to device Mac. It wanted to make me log back in again (disconnected, reconnected with different Mac address) but then I switched back to randomized mac and it connected just fine (as is usually the case if I just toggle wifi) with the last used random Mac ad.
Is there a way to reset my randomized mac address? I wonder if that Mac address has been flagged somehow on their system.

Holy wow I think I may have solved it. After reading this (https://source.android.com/devices/tech/connect/wifi-mac-randomization-behavior) documentation, I went to dev options and that toggle for wifi non-persistent randomization was on. I did NOT turn it on, and it is/has been OFF on my pixel 3.
Can you or someone who's reading this check if your dev setting for non-persistent randomization is on or off?
I'm about to go out to lunch, I'll report back if that fixed it and update my op.
If you mean MAC randomisation then mine is off.
My Wi-Fi non-persistent MAC randomization is disabled by default.
Mine MAC randomization is on. I have never touched it.
That could certainly cause your problem. Many captive portals work off MAC addresses.
