[Q] Updating CWM/Installing LiquidSmooth - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

So I've got a SGH-I747M that I rooted and put a ROM on probably more than a year ago now. Been happy with it, but figure I should probably get a new ROM, as I'm still on Jelly Bean and the one I have has always been a bit bloated. So I started brushing up on all this stuff as I forgot how to even install a new ROM, I'm a very casual Android user. Anyway I figure most of it out and decide I want to install this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2630316
So I download the latest version and go to flash it and get a Status 7 error. From what I could gather this means my recovery needs to be updated, correct? If not I need even more help. But anyway yeah I need to update my CWM. Start looking up how to do that and it says to download ROM Manager, but apparently me device isn't supported with that. Then I see some stuff about flashable recovery files, but the only ones for my phone are even more out of date than the one I have. So what are my options for updating it then? I know you can use Odin for it, but I can't for the life of me find the right file. Then there's the thing with the the Terminal Emulator stuff using the .img file, which might be how I installed it in the first place, but that seems like the easiest way to brick my phone. It'd be great if someone just had a recent flashable version, but if not the file I need for Odin. Or is the Terminal Emulator method not as intimidating as it looks? And if that isn't the reason I was getting the error well then I'm just lost.
Please someone just put an end to my misery and tell me what the hell to do.

Nevermind, I figured it all out. See you in another year when I forget what the hell I'm doing again.

[Q] what are your thoughts on the update? is it stable?

are their any problems with it? if so are they fixable? FYI im talking about the leaked froyo update. Also is their more then one version of it? IVe been thinking about updating and could use some input as to what I should do. Any help is appreciated.
Hey bro I wasn't being a **** towards you on your last post. I was just trying to tell you that it was in the wrong section. Welcome to the.forums and this is a great place if you want to learn. I'm on the update now running bonsai rom with ext4 and its very stable. I get better battery life than eclair and everything works. The only issue I have is occasionally when I make a call I don't hear it ring till I toggle speakerphone on/off. That's a common bug. Other than that its an awesome leak and I'm gonna be on it till the official release and update it manually. I would Def. Update if I were you. The best way in my opinion is to use Odin to get a fresh install and make sure you have a GPS lock before you flash so your GPS will work on froyo. Good luck

Its cool. could you provide me link to all the things listed? assuming its not against the rules. Preferably the best version of the update or clarification of what it is would be helpful.
http://briefmobile.com/how-to-update-sprint-epic-4g-to-android-2-2. Use the second set of instructions. Download Odin and the full tar file. Put the phone in download mode by turning it off and then holding the 1key on the keyboard and the power button. If it's in dl mode you will see a guy like shoveling stuff. Open Odin and put the full dk28 tar file (make sure it's the correct size like 289mb) in the PDA section. Make sure first that Odin recognizes the phone so there should be COM that pops up in the box on the upper left corner with some numbers(don't worry bout what the number is). So plug the phone into the computer after Odin is up not before. After Odin recognizes the phone go to the PDA section not phone but PDA and plug the full Dk28 file into this. Make sure only auto reboot is the only thing checked on the left side and DON'T USE THE PIT FILE. it can cause Odin to fail and it's not needed for rom flashing. Once everything is ready hit start. You will see a progress bar on the phone and computer. Once you hit start it should take around 3-4 mins to complete and don't unplug the phone till it's done. If for some reason it says it failed or it just hangs at a certain step just keep trying. Sometimes it takes me a couple tries. One more thing before you shut your phone off to put it on dl mode one up aps and turn your gps on and get a lock. That way your gps will work once it's flashed. Good luck. Any questions just ask but you can follow the guide n the website I gave you the only thing that I told you that is different than the website is they say to use the pit file. remember don't you dont need it.
KEY PIECE OF ADVICE MISSING HERE. before you flash that file rename out taming the .md5 extension off. Also when he says only have reboot checked, means un check that box labeled f.reset its easy to overlook. Now the pit file, normally I don't use it but this is changing complete os version not just an eclair update I would go ahead and use it. Its just a map for odin to use when partitioning the install and with froyo for sure the modem has been moved around on a diff sector. This time I would use it. Best of luck and read over all the directions before you do it to make sure you are comfortable with it.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
You can rename the file but I've never had a problem with using the tar file with. Md5. Odin accepts it but I guess some people have had problems with it. Also I didn't use the.pit going to dk28 and my.phone works fine. I've never used the pit file. Only time its needed is for.flashing kernels and modem files bit it's not gonna hurt if you use it. I've actually had the pit.file make my flash fail before the first time I tried to use the pit file.

Thanks Guys! One more question. Could you tell me how to also root my phone after this update so I can use my phone as a wireless hotspot? Im also curious as to what the benefits of rooting are and what I can do once im done. Hopefully I dont sound like a idiot ,but I am needing to educate myself more.
Sure I can help you. Once you get to 2.2 like I Saif you have 2 options. To keep you rfs filesystem or switch.to ext4. I.recommend going.to ext4. It will make your phone faster and alot.of rom developers have switched to ext4 so.if you want.the newest rom updates you need it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897612. That's the link for the one click.root plus clockwork version 3 that will convert you to ext4.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770388 . That's the link for the one click root and cwm. If you want to stick with the stock filing system. I have the latest version of bonsai rom installed with ext4 filing system. Let me know what you decide to go with. If you go with ext4 and cwm3 it only supports edify scripts to flash but a lot of zips have been converted to edify. Just let me know if you go with cwm3 and I'll explain this in more detail for you.

Will it change the stock layout/menu of my phone? or erase anything? Also Im assuming a rom is somthing you load on your phone like a game with a emulator. But what exactly do these roms do?
Also last question and im off to work on this. I heard this update can also increase my battery life is that true?
As far as a rom erasing all your data yes when you flash the rom you boot into clockwork and you have to clear all data and cache before flashing so when your phone boots up you won't have any data there. It's like a brand new phone, but if you do a backup in clockwork and then after you erase all data and flash the rom you can do an advanced restore and restore all your data. It's a really nice feature to have. As far as a rom losing the stock look it depends on the rom. Some roms look stock and others don't. The best thing you can do is go to the development section and open up the different roms and look at the pics of what it looks like to have that rom on your phone and also look at the change logs and it will tell you what is on the rom. If you want to keep the stock look bonsai rom v1.1.4 leafless version looks pretty stock and if you get tired of that you can then flash the theme over top of the rom and it changes it up a bit. If you want I can post pics of my setup so you can see if you like it. I hope I answered your questions so you can understand it. As far as battery life I'm getting better battery life on dk28 But it will get even better when custom kernels come out for froyo and then they can under volt them. That won't happen till the ota comes out and the source code is released but yes I'm getting better battery life on froyo then I was on stock eclair. Also the good thing bout rooting is you can freeze or delete all of the bloatware that you don't use. For instance the sprint NASCAR app or whatever else that comes on the phone that wastes space. If you have any more questions just ask. When you decide to do this I can give you my google talk username and I can walk you thru the process and get you a nice rom setup on your phone. Just let me know. Later
Got it done. But now I can't find apps I need in the market place is teir any kind of fix for that?
Ok did you instal the drivers? If not let me know if you have a 32 or 64 bit and ill post them for you. Also if its a desktop try.the USB in the back closest to the motherboard. Also the stock cable sucks and you need to get another one. Radioshack has one or eBay. But you need the computer to recognize the phone or you can't root it either and install cwm. If you did install the drivers plug the phone in when its turned on and it should install them for you as long as you downloaded them. If you installed the drivers try turning on USB debugging ( settings-applications-development) and then plug the computer in and if the drivers are installed properly in the notification bar it would say USB connected and then USB debugging on. That means the phone and the computer can recognize each other

found the drivers and got the update installed but some of my apps just arent in the market place that I used to have. Is that normal? I was hoping to redownload mobile banking and cant find it.
found the drivers and got the update installed but some of my apps just arent in the market place that I used to have. Is that normal? I was hoping to redownload mobile banking and cant find it. Is their a fix?
Yeah that's normal I can't.remember why but when you flash a rom they will come back. There us a fix somewhere in the development section but if you flash a custom rom you'll be fine. Noe use.the one click root with cwm version 3 to convert to ext4.

at this point all i have done is install the leaked update. I want to be able to download the apps I cannot get to some of which may be protected in the marketplace. Is their a link or way around this with out rooting or would i need to root to access them? also if I do root I want the same layout my menus have now so where can I find a walkthrough for this? thanks guys for your patience and help. ALSO UPDATE I want to go ahead with the root and ext.4 rom it and but i dont want my menus or anything to change whats the next ?or would they change?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=848778. That will help you to fix why uoi are missing some apps. If you want yo ho to ext4 rom then I suggest bonsai Mammon rom v 1.1.4 leafless. This rom has the stock look but with extra performance added. Just run the one click root with.clockwork mod version 3 to convert to ext4 then flash the rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897612. That's Tue.root you have to run. Here's the rom I recommend http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=869295
update I placed ext 4 on here and rooted it. Now how do I apply the market fix and im done for a while.
I cant seem to find the folder to apply the fix

[Q] Ultra Noob Question, what am I doing wrong to fail custom rom installs.

Ok so I have been trying to mess around with my S3 for the last few days, I just converted over after 6 years of using iOS products and have absolutely no knowledge of Android at all, most of the info I can find that pertains to my device is limited to very basic instructions that make no sense to me having no droid background, I tried following information from other devices and that didn't change any of my issues. I have rooted the phone successfully and with no issues; however my next step of installing a custom rom has had me hit a brick wall.
I have gotten as far as installing the rom onto my phone (CM10) yes I was trying to use the proper d2att version of the nightly updates, most current one. I have CWM running fine, created a nandroid backup, booted back to stock, wiped all the cache's, wiped the phone. But any time I try to install the rom it gives me some BS status 7 error, which from all the searching I did came back with an issue of it not being the correct rom for my phone. But according to everything blasted on this site and on CM's site my phone (Rogers GS3) uses all the d2att stuff, thats what I used to root my phone and as mentioned that went flawlessly, 10 minutes maybe. Big thanks to the people here that put the Toolkit package together.
If it makes any difference I was trying to install via CWM via the install from zip on SD
Terribly sorry if this is the wrong spot for this but its been three hours of horrible frustration on something that people do in a 6 minute video on YouTube, followed one to the word and still had this status 7 error.
TL;DR - Help a converted apple noob with his perpetual status 7 error from hell!
First thing, you posted in the sprint section and as for status7 error I want to say you have a bad download, try downloading it again.

Ah crap! Thats what I get for going on a flurrey of cross board reading, could have sworn I was still in the AT&T section, probably wait a day or two for a new download or possibly try and older version. Thanks for the heads up.

Won't hurt to try an older version, or another ROM to make sure your phone runs that ATT coding properly. If a different/older ROM works, then I would chalk it up under the bad download/bad update for that ROM and wait for the next increment. As long as you have the Nandroid (without getting crazy) you should be free to explore different things.

S3 Rogers - Looking for ROM/info

I have myself a Rogers based S3, that has the stock Jelly Bean OS on it.
Its bogged down, I don't like it anymore.
I have seen the OS on the Nexus unit's and find it to be WAY better (more fluid, more options and much better UI for texting)
Now for the explanation of this thread....
I have NO idea what I'm doing anymore when it comes to this phone. It's not rooted, NO CWM installed.. And i fear i may brick it if i don't know exactly what i'm doing.
That being said, i would like to go to a stock Google OS, or something very close to it.
What are my options? I would like to try and make this as pain free as possible. As far as i can recall, rooting//cwm and Os load on my captivate was really easy... This time around, i am finding way too many "possible" ways of doing everything. I think more or less, i need to be pointed to the right way so i don't get confused.
Anyone willing to toss me a hand on this one :fingers-crossed:

Instead of linking me to something I've already read, how about actually saying something.
I'm finding too many "this might work for rogers, this might not"
Last time i followed a tutorial meant for an AT&T unit, I hard bricked the phone, and ended up tossing it
Sorry if it was in the wrong section before Kenny.
How about me not responding at all next time? I know no one is forcing me but its simple enough to find this info by searching. I understand your hesitance... No one wants an expensive brick.
I'll put something together for you later today unless someone else beats me to it. Deal?

Good thread to read: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1725839
First you need to get root. 2 easy ways here. First one is install a stock rooted ROM with Odin. Look for the Rogers image here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426 Second one is to install CF-Root with Odin, here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1963790 Make sure to get the one for I747M. Second option is faster b/c the zip is way smaller. Now you have stock root.
Next get GooManager https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.s0up.goomanager&hl=en. Run it, press menu and then install open recovery script or something like that. It will install TWRP custom recovery. Now you can flash ROMs. Perform Nandroid backup before commencing flashing.
For a pure Google like experience, give Slimrom or AOKP (Task650) a try. Very stable.

Dandroid is the latest stock themed to the hilt like Cyanogenmod. Very stable.

Hey guys.
So i got the phone rooted, and TWRP is installed. I have a NANDROID backup already done, but i'm a little confused on the roms. Could someone help me with this?
Last i recall, the roms were a single file, Ive downloaded the AOKP JB in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766684 but i'm confused on how to install the rom (as its a .zip file, there's multiple files in the folder....)
Thank in advance!
Edit - I tried to flash the rom anyways, and AOKP one Failed and turned up with an error. It comes up saying "Error executing updater binary in zip "
Edit2 - I just managed to flash Dandroid to the S3, but apps are failing to load everywhere. Unsure if this is something to do with the network or anything, but im also not getting LTE with Rogers.... Play store wont connect either (and i did to the Gapps update...?)

Before flashing you need to wipe. Data, system, dalvik and cache. Oh and before this put the new ROM files and anything you want to keep like pics on the external sdcard.
Do you have an updated bootloader? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2321310
Try re downloading the AOKP ROM and flash the while thing (the .zip). Then flash the gapps. You may have a bad download the first time.
With non-touchwiz ROMs you need to install the ROM and gapps. Do not install any gapps with dandroid.

If that sorts your issues, then call it done and thank the people that helped you.
The earlier suggestions were good and not to be faulted. However there is more than one way to do most things. So if you are not happy for whatever reason here is a slightly different approach. There are some very stable custom ROMs that are very snappy and have a similar no lag, fluid feel (Google calls this "butter") to them vis a vis the Nexus. So a simple approach to that result would be:
1. Download and install the Samsung S3 V7.0 toolkit (program)
2. Start the toolkit program
Choose "n" when asked if you want to update the program
Choose your phone version. This is probably "53" for you
Choose option #1 from the main menu to install the necessary USB driver to your PC
After the driver is installed, connect your phone to your PC with the Samsung USB cable.
If your phone is currently stable, you can skip steps #3 + 4.
If you are uncertain, then steps #3 + 4 will restore a stock Rogers firmware as a starting point:
3. Go to Samsung updates and download a stock Rogers firmware
4. Install the stock firmware. This is toolkit menu option #8, 4, 2
5. Download the custom Wicked Aroma ROM v10 (main thread here)
6. Copy the Wicked Aroma ROM to your phone. You can do this in windows by going to file manager and drag and drop the Wicked file (leave it zipped) on the "Samsung Mobile MTP Device - Phone/Data" folder icon.
7. Flash the Wicked ROM from "recovery mode"
Ensure that your battery is at least 80% charged. Then turn your phone off and disconnect the USB cable
Push and hold the home button, volume up and power button at the same time until you feel the phone vibrate and see blue text on screen in the upper left hand corner. Then release the buttons.
On the onscreen phone menu, choose wipe (factory reset)
Then choose install and select the Wicked_v10. zip file
The rest of the install will be automated on your phone screen. It will ask you to select a number of options. If you are uncertain, then just leave them at the default settings. Ensure that you leave the wipe cache setting as is when asked. And I'd recommend the stock theme and stock kernel to start. The rest you can leave as is or change to what sounds attractive to you.
Note that the wicked ROM will change your boot splash screen. Most people won't care and it's not that hard to revert if you don't like the logo for some reason. This is the logo that appears for a few seconds when you first power up a phone.
This is a very snappy, pretty much zero lag and stable ROM. I think that you'd like it.

Thanks for the lengthy reply.
I tried putting the new bootloader on there, and tried re-flashing, but it did the same thing. So, in the mean time i'm going to use the Dandroid rom (didn't install the Gapps) and it seems to be working okay. I just fear a bit as the phone seems to be running much warmer then it usually does....
In the mean time, ill use this one, and see if it makes a difference (it could still be loading all my settings and whatnot, so we'll see what happens. I love the look of this rom though. Very simple, very clean. Exactly what i was looking for. Those samsung stock themes are terrible.... Thanks a bunch for the help people. Greatly appreciate it!
Personal taste varies a lot and there are a lot of themed ROMs on this site. So you should be able to find something that you like. It sounds like you want something snappy and Spartan looking. If you like your results so far, then no need to go any further.
If you end up trying the Wicked ROM, perhaps choose the Miui or Holo launcher and ASOP lock screen options.
There are an endless variety of home screen themes to be discovered. And no way to know what you might like. A few random screen shots:

Just installed the Wicked rom on my S3. NICE! Need to play with the settings a bit to get it configured the way I like, but a definite keeper.
Very nice job.....Kudos!

[Q] Finally Flashed!!! (This Is Gonna Be Long...)

When last Feb. I finally switched from my iToy to my N7100, I thought that 'flashing' was something that some perv did while wearing a raincoat.
(Hey, I'm pushing 70)
I Finally got my device rooted. I know that it's rooted because while using CF Auto, It wanted me to flash a Triangle Away update, and my binary count went down from 22 to one... so I know at least that worked.
Overjoyed that in Odin, when flashing I first got the notice "Reset!" and then after a few minutes and a restart, I got the "Done" notice (or whatever it said) as I never unplugged from the USB as it says you're supposed to. I just forgot.
Prior to "upgrading" to 4.3 Indian version, I had the stock Rom 4.1.2 running the Perseus Kernel... loved it, but upgrading to 4.3 has turned out to be the worst decision so far.
I still have a lot of Root apps on the phone but they don't work, but as I said, Triangle Away did work.
Should I uninstall the existing ones like Tit. Backup Pro and a few others and re-download them?
Does CF Auto Root automatically install SuperSU? Or should I uninstall that and re-download that too?
One last question....
Assuming that I do have Root, and I'm able to get Titanium Backup Pro working and am able to freeze and/or uninstall the Knox files... What about the ODEX files with Knox.
On this site, I have heard both pieces of advice... Delete and not delete the ODEX'd files.
What is it?
Nobody ever comes up with a definitive answer on this site... it's just a bunch of opinions, usually with the disclaimer, "Worked for me", or something like that... combined with the fact that I really hate working with the Windows partition on my Mac to do the flashing.
Oh, one more thing.
I'd like to go back to the Perseus kernel which somebody mentioned here on XDA.
Are there any kernels for the N7100 that are only useable with 4.1.2 that I should NOT use with 4.3, or does it matter. In other words, would it work with 4.3 as it did with 4.1.2?
Too bad that I don't have somebody like ChainFire living next door. Haha!
I have to thank the XDA site for most of my knowledge since last Feb. when I thought that rooting had something to do with digging up a tree in my front yard.
One more thing (again), I just got an update for Rom Manager Premium and it looks like I can download a CM stable release, which I'm gonna do as soon as I get some of these things ^^^Above answered and ironed out.
I'd like to stick with AOSP as opposed to AOKP but I'll do anything to get away from this current ROM.
Thanks in Advance to anyone who can answer some of these Noob questions.
1-ok i think that you have a custom recovery now, i had these issues a lot on 4.3, if you have custom recovery TWR or CWM you can install any rooted 4.3 rom, but before you do so make sure you backed up your efs folder (VIP you will lose signal if this folder corrubted), after a clean install of any rooted rom, just install ur apps again, if you don't have custom recovery you will need to flash any recovery from Odin, if you can't install recovery from odin so this will be bec. of knox, report back bec. this is another story.
2- some kernels works fine with 4.1.2 or 4.3, and some old ones are only 4.1.2, so make sure that you will flash the right kernel (e.g. devil, AgniPure Stock, ....)
3- don't try to update to CM now, frist make sure that you have a fully working rooted rom with custom recovery install, i also don't recommend flashing roms using any app (rom manager fore example), i think the best flash is the one you do from recovery with clean flash
Just A Follow-Up...
Hey, thanks, evaworld!!!
UPDATE:
I decided to try Root Explorer again (It never worked before to delete anything before this time) and do a search for anything with Knox in it.
I found everything Knox and checked all the boxes except for the ODEX'd files, hit the trash can and wow... it asked for Root privileges. I gave it, and everything was gone in a flash (Pun intended).
Then I tapped on Ti Backup Pro and got the dreaded 'Android device I.D. changed' message so I came back here to XDA and read literally every post on it (Again, opinions are divided) and decided to ignore.
After that, nothing was working for me in Google Play, so I just deleted the data in Google Play Services, Google Play Store, and now I'm waiting for it to take effect in Google Play... whenever I did that in the past, it usually took a couple of hours for it to register. (?)
Now, all of my Rooted apps that I've tried so far are working, but somewhere along the line they pushed Samsung Link on my phone even though I've had Samsung Apps disabled since day one.
The funny thing is that with a Binary Count of 22, I did absolutely nothing differently than this time (Except for an abortive try with Philz_Touch that I don't particularly like the GUI in P_T)... same USB cable, same port, same Windows partition on my Mac, etc. etc. it took this time and I'm pretty overjoyed!
I'll follow evaworld's advice on the ROM... better not throw too much into the mix until I decide that everything is all ironed out.
And, yes, I did click the "Thanks" button for you.
Very good that you have root, but also note that your setup isn't so stable (besides the fact that 4.3 isn't very stable with root apps e.g. I always have problems with titanium and Super and alot of other apps that requires root) , so just clean install a good 4.3 app (I recommend DN3), and after that you are free to do whatever you want (don't forget efs backup in sage place).

My telephone is now rooted, but will not install CM Mods...

Hello, this is my first, and most likely stupid post...
I rooted my Epic 4G last night (amazingly) but now when I try to follow numerous guides and discussions on how to update my OS (I have the last gingerbread version) which is the MAIN reason I wanted to root my telephone, it stubbornly (or more likely, I STUPIDLY do something wrong) and it refuses to flash or install any of the CM Mods that I see EVERYONE else is running just fine on their Epic 4G!
I've installed ROM toolkit which LOOKS like it should easily install whatever ZIP file I've DL'd onto my SD card. But in every case with different mods, it comes back with the same error when it tries to install, which is 'Cannot mount the SD card', but it is mounted and seen just fine and it is mostly empty.
I followed these steps with the exception of using the PC interface, instead trying ROM toolkit to flash it which is found here;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2540250&page=77
But, I get the same error when it goes to install. I MUST be doing something wrong. I am really VERY much a newbie, but unless I need to go about this differently, I am REALLY stumped after trying and reading for many hours now.
I would sure appreciate a nice, SIMPLE way hopefully to upgrade my OS from Gingerbread to whatever I can use (I see others saying they are running KitKat just fine!)
Thank you so much!

I don't get what you are doing. Why are you trying to install that rom? That is an epic touch rom! Not an epic 4g rom, that's why you're getting errors. Just install any pre-rooted rom with clockworkmod, I usually use FC09 pre-rooted, and from there you can install cyanogenmod or a slimrom.

Oh, hey, I am SO glad that you took the time to answer me, thank you!
See, I TOLD you guys that I am not really conversant with this. I figured that I was doing something wrong. I absolutely PROMISE that I have been reading about this and trying to figure it out for like 2 full days STRAIGHT!
Would you mind, please, terribly just listing the basic few things that I have to do? I REALLY am confused by this. Are you saying that I need to install clockworkmod first? What version will my Epic 4G take? All I have installed now that seems related to this is the ROM toolkit PRO and ROM Manager. When I DID try to use ROM Toolkit to install this Rom, I got a long prompt how I didn't HAVE Clockworkmod, but I thought that it came with one of the others, I guess.
Could you PLEASE list precisely what I need to do? Could you kindly list the links for ANY pre-rooted ROM that you would recommend, or ones that work on my Epic 4G? Once I understand the steps, then I probably will know what to do if I want to try others, but I am kind of stumped as to exactly what to do now. I didn't even KNOW that that was an Epic Touch ROM! I'm surprised that I was able to follow the steps just to root the dang thing!
Dude, if you wouldn't mind taking pity on me and show me what I need to do, that would be super nice. It SOUNDS from what you said that I need a version of clockworkmod and I just need the RIGHT Rom and just how to do it, I guess...
Thank you so much for your time and any help that you can give!
Ah, got Clockworkmod!

Hey, I DID actually get a version of CWM. I installed ROM Manager and then it prompted me to 'update' CWM. Now, I had installed RM before and HAD tried to update CWM, BUT... it never allowed me to do that. However, THIS time, it DID! And now it continued and asked me if I wanted to flash CWM, and I said 'DO I?!!!' And it did. Now, I have a whole new option screen which I haven't looked at yet.
Soooooo, I'm kind of HOPING that now all that I will need is to be pointed toward a rooted ROM for my Epic 4G and just the steps how to do it.
I was TRYING to do this through ROM Toolbox Pro b4, but no go...
Thank you kindly again for whatever help you can give me!
Trying to get rooted ROM for Epic 4G...

Okay, I am now DLing this file:
cm-10.2-20131125-UNOFFICIAL-epicmtd.zip
Which from the page LOOKS like it is for my Epic 4G. I will TRY to see if I can transfer it to my telephone's SD card. Then, I will TRY to, what, 'Flash' it...? ... using CWM that I THINK is now on my telephone?
Anyway, I didn't want you to think I'm being a deadweight. I AM trying to figure this out
Thanks!
Tried, but no go...

Okay, the good news is that this time when I tried to install this package that I mentioned above, at least I didn't get the SAME error about not being able to mount the SD card, so that is SOME progress, I guess.
However, this time as it opened and tried to 'verify update package' it came back with an 'e-Signature verification failed'
Soooooo, did I indeed choose the WRONG ROM again...?
I will wait to hear from you when you have time.
Thank you kindly again!
Naaaa, I think I'm gonna frigg'n give up...

sigh... well... I think I'm gonna give up. I DLed yet ANOTHER seemingly official rom FOR my device, it appears, from this site on this page:
http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=epicmtd&type=stable
The one at the top: cm-10.1.3.1-epicmtd.zip
It says 'STABLE', but it could not verify the signature again.
So, until SOMEONE has mercy on me and tells me what the hell I'm doing wrong, I guess I will give up.
Thanks anyway...
IIRC you have to turn off signature checking in CWM. It's a menu option. I would recommend installing v11 M12.

Thanks kindly. I saw that many others were having similar troubles.
I will give it a try. And THANK YOU for the link!
Cheers!

My CWM is not Premium, so I don't think it has the option about signature verification. I did see on another thread that a fellow couldn't do it through ROM Manager because he kept getting the signature verification error. So, he was ultimately able to do it through Odin 1.85, which I have. The only thing is that the ROM is a Zip file and Odin will only flash Tar files because I've tried to do that before.
At least now I KNOW that I have a good link for the ROM itself, thank to you!
Now, all I have to do is figure out how to install it. I sure hope that I don't also have to buy ROM Manager Premium, because I just paid for ROM Toolbox Pro, which you would THINK would be powerful enough to do this, but I guess not...
Thanks though...

Heh... I guess I haven't QUITE given up yet...
Anyway, I thought that you should know that through ROM Manager my telephone is NOT booting into CWM's boot recovery. When I choose to boot to CWM recovery it ONLY boots to the stock Android recovery showing a little Android figure with an error sign and then in yellow letters below it says 'Manual Mode'
That may also indicate that something else is wrong...
Got it!
FINALLY! ...after reading about MANY different approaches for other people with different issues, it occurred to me to try using Odin to 'Flash' the actual CWM recovery program since it never seemed to update or EVER back up to it no matter how many times I tried. FINALLY... by holding down the 3 buttons immediately after flashing CWM recovery, it FINALLY actually booted up into the CWM recovery mode! THEN... and only then could I properly install the CM11 version and it all went great!
Now, the only thing I'm trying to figure out is how the hell to sync my Google contacts to get them all back!!!

Ahhhh... I didn't have ANYTHING Google, and then I remembered from what I read that in just about every case where someone installed a ROM like this one, they also mentioned a GAPPS file! DUH!!!!
So, I'm going to try to find the right one.
Also, something really weird... the Play store says that I already have some apps installed like ROM Manager and ROM Toolbox and others, but darned if they DON'T show up in my apps on my telephone. I wonder where the hell they are...???!
Thanks!

I'm glad that you made it. Never give up on flashing. About playstore it shows, under all apps, ALL apps that has been installed using that account. It's been so long since I rooted my epic, like 4 years ago, that I don't remember how I did it. It's a really strong phone.
I personally prefer slimrom jellybean, with kitkat you will have few storage left and you will have to use app2sd.

Yep, I've definitely already run into the storage thing. There is only like 500 Megs of internal storage. I already tried 'Move to SD card', but I'm not sure that is the same one. I really couldn't move that much to the SD card, at least from that app.
Basically, after installing the Google Keyboard (to get the voice-input for messages) I THINK I'm done for now
BTW, thanks for the suggestion about Slim Jellybean!
Thanks mate!
