[KERNEL][TW]NexTkernel: minimalistic kernel v1.0 [LINARO] - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

NexT kernel is not for everyone. My philosophy is to keep the kernel footprint as small as possible by trimming as much fat as possible, and at the same time keeping it stable, power efficient, and fast. You will find that it's lacking some of the bells and whistles of other custom kernels, so if you like features you came to the wrong thread.
DOWNLOAD: (Flash in recovery)
For touchwiz 4.4 roms only
All downloads can be found here, grab the latest one (check the latest month folder)
Wait for the download to start automatically
http://cnexus.co/downloads/?device=NexT&folder=d2spr
Features:
Updated to latest upstream Linux version (3.4.94)
Kernel modules trimmed and optimized
Compiled with latest linaro 4.7.4 optimized for cortex-A9 processors
Entropy (random number generation) tweaks
optimized kernel functions
fat trimmed and many other performance tweaks
fastcharge support included
faux sound control included
many other optimizations from CAF and upstream linux kernel
...and much much more coming soon

ooooooooooo excited for this
Will this kernel have color temp control (similar to infinitycolor or dkp's kernel where you can adjust via trickster mod?

Cool! Thanks for working on July 4th. Go eat some BBQ!

@CNexus - this kernel doesn't want to work for me on Validus or Liquid Smooth or AICP (so far) :crying: ... but I'm gonna keep trying ...

Once again thank you for your hard work and efforts and for sharing it with us...cbrox

Running good so far. The first time I flashed it on Wicked-X, I forgot to wipe Dalvik and Cache. An updated version of YouTube kept crashing as soon as I rebooted. After the wipe, no problems.

Oh New toy. Me like.

Nice work man :good: :good: :good:

Thanks @CNexus! Good news. For those of us who experience the issue on Ktoonsez' KT747 kernel that every third time inserting an OTG device (and leaving it in long enough to use) results in a spontaneous reboot, this issue doesn't appear to exist on this kernel.
I still have to do this in my normal, every day way (listening to music on my SanDisk Voyager Go 64GB with MicroUSB built in) three times without any kind of reboot in between to verify this.
Edit: I haven't reported this to Ktoonsez yet because I wanted to be as sure as possible that the problem's on the kernel - that and I don't know if it's worth reporting such a relatively trivial issue and Ktoonsez doesn't appear to plan on working on ND8 /NDC kernels any more.

What do you mean by lightning fast? Is the window animation speed set to 0.5?
Some rom does that and then it seems like it is lightning fast but it is not.

Nope, it's set to 1x. On first boot it was a bit laggy and slow for me even after setting animation options to 0.5, though after a reboot it seems fine. Will test more to see if its really any smoother than AOKP, which I was on before this.

This is a work in progress...
I am not responsible if you flash this and your device gets bricked or anything happens to your device from flashing this.

Instructions:
1. !!!MAKE A BACKUP!!!
2. Flash the kernel.
3. Wipe cache / Dalvik
4. Enjoy and post results!
This is a OC/UC/UV enabled kernel, build from TMO Samsung JB(4.1) Source. Am just learning the basics and this is my first job! Hope you like and enjoy!!
Note: My desire is stock reliability with oc/uc/uv benefits. This kernel wont have all the bells and whistles, my goal is a daily driver beast. Enjoy and hit thanks if you like!
Tested on: FrostyJB v9
Everything i tested work(i did used samsungs source...)
*** C H A N G E L O G
v1.1c(optional)
Same as v1.1b
Doesn't remove KT's apps (but keeps the tweak so you don't have to re-flash full rom)
v1.1b
Fixed uv table
Added missing 192 step in some freq tables
v1.1
Added more UC steps (192, don't know how to limit cpu on bootup, adding 2.1 wont let me boot)
Insecure image
Added Governors (pegasusq, interactive, smartassv2...etc)
Added Schedulers (sio, vr)
Added read-ahead (1024kb)
GPU OC (480Mhz)
Higher L2 per freq step

Creepy Bugs!
Open to discussion!Source:

Note: Am just a regular Joe, not a programmer or developer, i read KT's source and added by try and error(by myselft) what is working on this kernel because at that time there was no other stock based kernel with OC and i guess no one was working on one and that's what i wanted, it worked so i decided to share it on the place from i have taken so much. I hope you enjoy!!

January 6th 2013
All the device specific blobs have been updated to TMo 4.1.1 versions. The biggest improvement has been in updating the "common" blobs to the XXDLK7 4.1.2 versions. With the kernel updates paired with the 4.1.2 blobs the UI is much smoother. Scrolling jitters should be completely squashed and 3D performance is finally where it should be. Unfortunately, the low call audio bug is still there for calls that you receive. That's on the list to be fixed but the UI jitters and poor 3D performance were really bugging me and took priority.
Bullet 1.9.20
Major update to mali from N8000 sources
Bumped VM readahead to 1024 from 128
Bullet 1.9.15
1.9GHz Overclocking
Andreilux's memory expoit fix
Makefile tweaks
MDM power management updates
Bullet 1.9.00
Voltage Control
Dynamic Fsync
CRT animation fixed
Fixed USB mounting
MDM power management updates (more to come)
On the list are Mali fixes, Overclocking (duh), driver and firmware updates....
aokp_t889_unofficial_Dec-28-12.zip
Fixed power off charging
Added S Pen Gestures in ROM Control
Super Awesome . Promise come true.
Big thank
Finally, we get some AOKP action.

These davlik optimizations... its in the Nexus 4 thread. They do work on other qualcomm devices correct ?
So with the ROM all is working well save for a few mods. It seems if I try to make status bars mods settings closes. All the other ones seemed to be fine. I'll try to get a log cat

Yes indeed. The qualcomm optimized davlik should work on any S4 variant. I generally run it on my vzw S4 but right now im using ART as Vanirs been making some optimizations in the last build that make the phone a badass.
can I restore my app using TBU with this ROM ?

This rom is awesome, I just had something I noticed yesterday though.
While I had active notifications on playing youtube through chromecast, the screen kept flickering on and off taking me to the lockscreen. Other than that, I have no complaints.

Giving this rom a spin. How do you turn on the nav bar?

At the moment, Navigation bar hasn't been worked in for s4 variants since there are hardware keys.

Very nice ROM guys... 2 bugs to report. 1. Haptic feedback is inconsistent. 2. When customizing the notification tiles, the changes don't stick. Just letting you know if you didn't already. If ya did, i apologize. Keep up the great work though!

sorry I forgot the important guy on this one , thank you from bring this ks3rv3rg
I noticed you are using KT kernel but no Ktweaker. I tried flashing the AOSP KT kernel but would not boot. After dirty flashing to get the stock kernel back I looked again and noticed the build is KOT49H. Is this based off of a Google Edition base. If so then I know why the phone would not boot. Other than not being able to tweak and play it looks like a solid ROM.
Never mind. I noticed there is an occasional boot hang issue with this ROM. I had to force close and reboot to get it to boot on the stock kernel. So I tried the AOSP KT kernel again and it booted ok.
Never mind. Definatly a modified KT kernel. Way to many issues using the standard KT kernel. Will there be a version of you kernel that will come with the Ktweaker App.

[TW][MK3] Stock Kernel w/ SE for Android set to permissive

Short and simple, it's the stock kernel for MK3. No Overclocking/UnderVolting. No fancy mods. No apps. No init.d scripts. Just the kernel and modules that came with MK3.
I also made it so the updater script deletes anything from DKP and KToonsez kernels, so everything (kernel wise) will be back to stock.
Special Thanks to @CNexus for doing all the work (I just wrote the updater script, made the thread, and am hosting the zip) and @tdunham for everything he does.

Indeed it does, but as long as I get a new one soon I'm good.
Please help me understand. Will this do anything for me if I am using the stock TW 4.3 rom without knox that @CNexus provided to the community? I thought that he used the md4 bootloader to fix screen rotation. I believe this included the prior stock kernel.
Could i get better battery life with this mk3 kernel? With no conflicts with the rom. Thanks

This is just an updated stock kernel with exfat support, I forgot to include that in the last stock kernel I compiled

There shouldn't be any problems, but always make a fresh backup before you flash anything. Battery life probably won't change.
I installed this over DKP - and noticed one or 2 issues.
1) SE for Android status now says "Enforcing" (I believe it said permissive previously - not sure if this actually affects anything)
2) Tasker for some reason runs into an error when enabling / disabling my lockscreen (for when I'm connected to my home WIFI).
Would #1 have anything to do with #2?
EDIT: Nevermind!! Apparently they were directly linked. I used the simple process from this post to disable SELinux, and lockscreen works again.

After running other kernels for some time I decided to give this one a try. Using it combined with comadose. I've never seen a kernel sleep this well.
