[Q] T-Mobile Note II is only partially rooted. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hi All,
Recently I tried to root my T-Mobile Note II running stock 4.3 with a few of the one ctick root apps. I've tried framaroot (no go), towelroot (not supported) rootmaster (vRoot) I think that's where the partial root came into play. It installed an app called kinguser (that says I'm not rooted WTH!). It also installed it as a system app, so now I can't uninstall it. I installed supersu which has to update binaries, but it won't disable Knox. Rootchecker also says I'm rooted somewhat. The 1st paragraph under congratulations says I'm rooted. Everything else says no I'm not. User and group ID is not returning or something to that effect. When I learned about the one click apps I thought it was a Godsend because I don't have a computer. I've tried so many things to try to get around Knox, nothing is working. Installed it then deleted it like I read somewhere, tried the su pm com.sec.knox.seandroid on terminal emulator still no go. I even tried to play around with the commands for knox on terminal emulator atill no go. I don't know if its something security related with the phone or what. I used towelroot on my girlfriends Sgh t999L with stock 4.3 and it worked. So now I'm really pissed! I've searched the web for anything like this and couldn't find nothing. I know I'm not the only one this has happened to. I used some app cant remember the name, but it did ask me to use root access for something. But it wasn't through supersu. Plus it wasn't a root type of app so I refused access. I'm trying remember everything before I post this, dont wanna post it and remember something right after I do. I know its a lot of great minds on hear hopefully someone will be able to help me out with this situation. Thanks in advance XDA members..
PS. Does anyone know what modstring. I can use to maybe get towelroot to work? Or of any other terminal emulator commands for knox.

Just Odin flash the root66 tar from MrRobinson. You'll end up rooted and running fine...

Thanks for the prompt response Coug76. I read several of the route66 posts. It appears that this method is for the sgh t999 variants. I was able to acquire root access with towelroot for this phone. I didn't find any mention of the note 2 sgh t889 in any of those posts. I know that you are supposed to use methods for the particular model. I don't know if this is a universal method or what. I ran a different rootchecker app and it says that I have root but not root access. I understand the gist of that, but it isn't helping my situation. Is it safe to use this method for my phone, or could you please recommend something else that I can use? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for the quick response. Awaiting your reply. Thanks in advance.

While I prefer pc Odin, mobile Odin from Chainfire should take care of you. The only thing it won't flash in a Samsung tar is the bootloader. You already have the mk7 bootloader so you should be fine.

Thanks again Coug76, your help is both needed and appropriated. I just purchased and tried [Root] Mobile Odin Pro. First time it asked for superuser permission. The next few times it gave me an "couldn't detect phone model" error message. So, apparently I need superuser permission to run the app (I'm not sure) . I got a refund after a few tries..

There is a free version if Mobile Odin available on XDA FWIW. You would need root to make it work though. Brainfart there from yours truly.

LOL! Thanks again my friend. I see there's wisdom in your words. Quick question: If mobile Odin ever comes around again to its former glory. What would be the steps to take to install what's needed? Once again thanks. As you see I'm still not rooted but I still purchased the XDA Premium 4 app. Mainly because of my correspondence with you my friend. Thanks again, can't say that it enough. You've given me hope when I thought all hope was lost.
*What good is knowledge, if its not to be shared* Read that on the back of a cereal box, naw I didn't. LOL!

Did you manage to get it rooted?
I can't get my Note 2 rooted either. I must have rooted over 50 devices over the last 5 years and never ran into so much difficultly. I have tried the root66 method, various other links around. None of them work. I was on stock 4.3 as well. And I think that's the problem. These are very old links from 2 years ago and I think since I already had 4.3, I can't just go straight to a rooted 4.3. For me, the root only works on the first boot. The next time I boot, root is gone. I have tried different versions of SuperUser - 1.91, 1.99r4, 2.01. Nothing's worked. Tried installing superuser zip from TWRP and CWM. Same problem.

No. But I had never enabled it. The icon was still on the phone. Plus the ROM I downloaded has Knox removed from it. So it should have worked. It does get root on the first boot. But it's lost after a reboot.

Yes. I get a message
There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem!
If you just upgraded to Android 4.3, you need to manually re-root - consult the relevant forums for your device!
This is after the next boot. The first boot works.
Edit: I tried a number of links to try rooting.

Should I try that one? I presume it's different from the one in the first link. I'll have to reset the phone and all my settings. But at this point, I'm ready to try anything. I don't want to mess with a different kernel from your link on my current installation. BTW, how would I know what the current bootloader on my phone is and whether it's the latest? I was on Stock unrooted 4.3 when I started. I'm now on 4.3 (supposedly) rooted stock ROM from the first link.

I'm in the same boat. I'm partially rooted myself. Im the one posted the question. I tried to root my T-Mobile Note II running stock 4.3 today with heimdall (think that's spelled right) for mac. Files were uploaded phone rebooted, no root. I got my partial root from a one click apk called vRoot or rootmaster. I have root but not root access. I've never had the luxury of being rooted at all. I've tried different things to disable knox with no luck. I really think samsung and tmobile did something extra with that update. Don't understand how dam near every other phone with 4.3 can be rooted. But this one presents a slew of problems. My rootchecker pro reads exactly like yours. Except my group and user ID's don't return anything. Other than that it's word for word everywhere else. If you come up with a solution please let me know, or rather share. I don't have a computer so it's hard for me to try anything. Good luck and thanks in advance if you get it done. Thanks again.

The bootloader info is located in the about device area. Mine is T889UVUCMK7. Yours should be the same. Only difference between my phone and yours is mine started out on 4.1.2. Another thing with my phone is: whenever I try to load something through recovery mode by way of upload by external sd card. I always get a red "E" signature error and it doesn't put it on my phone. Hopefully the bootloader info is right. Someone with a bit more understanding about this stuff passed it on to me. My next attempt was going to be with route66, guess I don't have to try it out now being as though our situations are so similar.

a lot of XDA links are down so i suggest using the stuff on theunlockr.com it's pretty direct
dl kies or drivers (personally i just dl drivers)
run odin and flash CWM
you can then flash a rom to get root or flash superuser to get root.
I did the 'unlockr' method but it took me like 6 tries to get su installed through CWM.
Keep trying if it fails. It will eventually work.
It isn't too much different from the other methods floating around the forums. Links work which is always a plus as someone else has mentioned.

No it looks like he loaded an old sgs4g file on his microsd or something because he use to own one..
anyways.. it looks like your phone is just doing a bootloop. if you have a backup just nandroid restore.
Not sure what this sgs4g file is? is it a ROM/Kernel? or some backup data?
if you flashed a ROM/Kernel.. and you're only getting boot loops you're fking lucky. Flash a t989 ROM/kernel and it should fix it
if you just restored some data. just wipe your data and caches/dalvik cache

Easiest method, which I just used myself today, is the ZergRush Exploit.
You won't be able to install custom ROM's because this method does not install a new Kernel with Recovery. But it is the easiest method I have found and gives you ROOT if that is all you are looking for. It can be found through the stickies, but here is the link.

From 1st hand experience on a T-MO GS2 (and also what others have posted), the ZergRush has fewer successes on the T-Mo units. I tried ran it last night on a new phone and didn't do anything. I ended up using one of the other rooting methods. Not sure if it's hit or miss, or what the issue may be.

[Q] screwed up with Samsung SCH-S960L

Im new to all this so I rooted my Samsung SCH-S960L with a friend and i guess we did something wrong along the way.
The root worked fine, I then wanted to place a rom on it so we used rom manager and got CyanogenMod as it looked like the most popular and safest one. The problem is that it now says my phone is metro pc and the model number is SCH-R530M and I dont have a google play store (could not get it to download). I Just want to figure out how to get it back to normal and its hard to find many forms for sch-S960l or SCH-R530M
If you downloaded a CM rom you also need to flash gapps package. The google apps are not allowed to be used with those types of rom, or built into them because google apps are proprietary and cm is not licensed to use them in the rom. So you have to find and download the appropriate gapps package then you will have play store and other essential google apps.
Somewhat ambitious to jump right to that instead of playing with some TW roms first.

It seems like you flashed a CM built for a different device. Not all SGS3's are the same!!
Another possibility is that you need to update your APNs. There is a flashable universal APN fix for Boost S3 (I'm on Boost), so it couldn't hurt to check around and see if there is one for your carrier.

i personally don't know if it will work/harm on JB since when i used it my S3 had already been updated to KK and SuperSU will help regulate what apps have root access by giving you a prompt when a app asks for root access and SuperSU also updates your "Root/SU Binary" so it's on the latest one and Busy Box will also ask SuperSU for root access and will install Busybox 1.22.1 which allows you to use some other root apps like Viper4Andriod

[Q] Need help to root note 2 tmobile 4.3

Hi I am new to this forum and a casual user. I wanted to root my note 2 tmobile android version 4.3 and actually rooted it once but knox created a lot of problem. I could not even launch titanium backup to freeze knox. Or was completely unable to disable knox. Now as android 4.3 has been released for quite a few months. Does anyone know of a method which will root my galaxy note 2 tmobile (SGH-T889) for sure and let me completely disable knox? If so please give me step by step instruction of rooting my device or alteratively you can provide me a link of the instruction so I can root my note 2 phone. I appreciate your help.

cf auto root should work for root. what did you use to root? if you are rooted install a custom recovery and flash a knoxfree rom from the dev section
Flash CF auto root via Odin then download latest superuser from play store and you are ready to go.

Did you try this method, if so did it work for you? Im having similar issues with my tmobile note 2 running 4.3 too. I'd appreciate it, thanks in advance...

Just as a suggestion, something that happened to me while playing around with the phone: if you're running Stock rom and then flash a custom recovery via Odin (I used Philz Touch) upon booting on recovery just to wipe cache/dalvik I found something interesting: my phone wasn't rooted, so when chosing the option "reboot system now" a message that said something like "root is broken, would you like to root your phone before rebooting" appeared. I was curious, as I normally use a website called Kingo root that does it in a one-click kinda way. When I chose Yes in the recovery, upon booting my phone it was rooted. After, I just intalled Chainfire's SuperSU from the play store and it was all good.
It's worth trying I believe.

I have a question. If you don't run odin as a administrator do you get this error message: Windows cannot access the specific device path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access. The last time I tried to root my phone i didn't run odin in administrator mode. I'm just finding out about this recently. I have all of the files installed on the computer and ready. Odin, recovery, keis, and supersu zip on sd card. Im just trying to figure out why I got that error message. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance... Awaiting your response...

The only answer that pops up in my mind would be that you weren't running Odin as an administrator, like you mentioned. Maybe try running Odin as an admin, or alternatively (and I haven't tried this myself but Chainfire's thread gives a good step-by-step and people in the forum do help) use mobile Odin ------> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899. The first time I wanted to root my phone I was having issues too, not being able to do it because of lack of experience. I stumbled upon this website: http://www.kingoapp.com/. Check it out, if you would like. This kingo app is a downloadle app (kind of like Odin) that Roots yourm phone alone, without needing to flash anything. The step-by-step's are there, just turn on your developer options and then turn on USB debugging. I personally rooted A Galaxy Tab, SIII, a Note I i717 and an Asus MemoPad with that website and it worked perfectly for me. Rooting via custom recovery is something that I learned recently, and by chance. I do not know whether it trips the Knox counter or not to be honest with you, to me it doesn't make a difference since I will not be returning any of the devices I rooted, After rooting the phone like so you could potentially download mobile Odin from Chainfire's thread and then use Odin without needing to use your computer.
Hope this helps

Yeah that was it, i rooted it earlier today. I do have another question for you. I ran root checker pro and it says I'm rooted. I tried to install busybox but it said remove supersu permissions reinstall supersu and to delete and reinstall busybox. Also the adb shell doesn't have root access either. So is that a common occurrence, or is it the norm after rooting and installing custom recovery? Awaiting your reply. Thanks in advance...

Sorry for the late reply, hadn't been to the forum in a minute. To be honest with u, I don't know for sure. I haven't personally yet served myself from adb so I can't tell u. However, the reason why you received that response from busybox may be because when u were partially rooted it gained root access (if it ever did, I only assume).
Try what was asked of u and I'm sure busybox will work no problems. Also, if u have the terminal emulator apk try entering the command "root" (without the ") and if u gain roots access it will definitely mean you are rooted for sure.
What do you want to use adb for, if I may ask?

[Help] Unrooting Samsung Galaxy S3 urgent!

About a month ago I rooted my Galaxy S3 and tried to install CM11. Long story short it did not all work out well because Knox security would not let me install any root apps. And the rumor is that the Galaxy S3 is about to receive the new KitKat update and I would like to unroot the phone before the update arrives so that I can have a chance to install it. I have tried on my own by following some instructions from some websites but so far nothing seems to work. I downloaded the correct firmware from SamMobile and downloaded Odin. When I plug the phone in and start the Odin process everything seems to be going well until a big red "FAIL!" pops up. I'm hoping I don't damage my phone in the process, but so far it hasnt been bricked yet. Please, any help is appreciated.
what model of S3 do you have? There is many.

The best bet is to get that firmware to flash. You can try using an unroot option if all else fails (in the supersu app, just choose Full Unroot).
But if you want to try to get the firmware flashed, we need more info about what's happening. In particular, what model device, your current firmware version, the version you are trying to flash, where you got it from, and most importantly, what does Odin say when it fails? (Copy the text in your post)

Okay, I'll get the text off Odin as soon as my phone charges to 80% or so. Should be about an hour or so.

Okay so now for some reason Odin won't add the phone when its plugged in and in download mode. Maybe its because my battery charge wasn't at 80% or higher? Or could it be because I deleted the SuperSU file? And was it a bad idea to delet the file? Kinda frustrated cause I have no idea what's going on and why it won't unroot, I just want my phone back to normal...

Is your computer detecting your phone when you plug it in while in download mode? unplug it and plug it back in a few times to see if your computer detects/installs correctly giving a couple minutes before unplugging each time.
Once odin does detect your phone, be sure you have the correct firmware for your phone. If you have the T999, be sure to download the firmware for the T999, if you have the T999L download the firmware for that one... Check DocHoliday77's Firmware/OTA's post in the Android Development section for directions on flashing back to stock.
If you are adamant about the whole Knox thing, you can just flash the attached zip using a custom recovery to remove knox

It was just recently that Odin refused to work. Before that it was working fine but if you read my first post there were still obstacles. It all seems to be going well until Odin just gives a big read "FAIL!" at the top. And around last year when I unrooted the same phone, I always got "md5 error" but that isn't the case right now. And I do have the right firmware downloaded from SamWire.com. Hoping you can help.

If I missed it I apologize, but you still haven't answered several of the questions we've asked you. I'm only assuming you have the T999 model since it sounds like you're stock and its in your dad app Sig.... but what firmware are you on now? What build are you trying to flash? Can you copy the text output from odin after it fails? You say you think knox is blocking odin from running.....if this is the case its actually not knox (common mistake), but its not letting you downgrade due to the revision check, which is why I want to know your current firmware and the build you're trying to flash.
Without this information, the only things I can think to tell you are to try several usb cables (they do go bad, and many are only for charging), try each cable in every usb port on the computer (weird but its worked many times), or try this....
Check my Towelroot root thread in general section. Reroot the device with this method and after installing SuperSU, let it update the binary and disable Knox. Now try flashing in odin. If it doesn't work, try the full unroot option I mentioned earlier.

Sort for neglecting to answer your questions. Just been stressed about this. But to answer some of your questions; Yes this is the Samsung SGH-T999 model running 4.3. And yes I am trying, and failing, to Unroot my phone by flashing a stock firmware from which I downloaded from SamWire.com. I'm trying to flash 4.1.1 or 4.0.1 (can't remember). And from there on I can upgrade to the newest, 4.3 jellybean or 4.4 KitKat if it is available. As for the Knox situation, I didn't say that it was blocking Odin. I just said that Knox was preventing any root apps to function. Every time I try to access the SuperSu app Knox prevents like "This app has tried to gain access to your phone. We have prevented it.". And so I was wondering if that was why I was having problems? Is this info good now? If you need more I can try and answer.

That is your problem, you cannot downgrade firmware once you have upgraded to 4.3. That still doesn't explain the Odin problem. That is most likely a cable issue as DocHoliday77 stated or a driver issue on your PC. check your device manager when you plug it in to see if your computer even detects it. If it gives the yellow triangle in your device manager on your PC, try uninstalling, then unplug your phone and plug it back in.

Thanks! This definitely helps! If you have previously updated to 4.3 firmware you cannot downgrade anymore. (Flashing older roms is ok, but not the full firmware). If you find a way to force the flash, it'll brick your phone.
So if your current firmware is MJC, you can only flash MJC or NC2 builds. If your current is NC2, then you can only flash NC2.
If you want to check for sure, install terminal emulator and enter this:
getprop to.bootloader
This will tell you your current firmware build.
If this still doesn't flash, let us know. But you could still try my other suggestions for rerooting and trying the full unroot again.
Sorry I misunderstood what you said about knox. Many people call the warranty bit part of a knox bootloader. This isn't entirely inaccurate, but can lead to some confusion, so I wasn't sure if that's what you were talking about.

How To Root S3 After Updating NJ2/NJ3

After Updating to the newly updated firmware for both Sprint and the Boostmobile/VM variant, I am very sure a lot like me are facing difficulty with any workable method of rooting these new firmware. I spent up to three days searching OPs and cant actually find any guaranteed solution. So I am hoping this thread would help us find all the answers we need at one place. Those who have successfully rooted NJ2/NJ3 should share their method with us.

I saw the guide. Towelroot no longer works , as we all know.
I happen to use Linux as an OS, and the Odin alternatives didn't work for me (it's been a while so my memory of it was a little fuzzy) I didn't just give up after the first try or anything, I've asked question about it before.
I'm wondering if there could be an alternative to Towelroot at this time. Ideally I'd rather not have to rely on some program on my PC. I'm not afraid of the terminal, either.
Yes I also faced several failures before I managed to get my phone rooted. I used chainfire's autoroot for sph710 and it worked so you might want to give it a try

One is a Flashable Zip...not sure if I have used it, but it should work and the other you must unzip and flash using Odin...I know that one works.
I used Chainfire's CF-root method but I also did not care about tripping the flash counter because this is a used phone from eBay and I have no warranty to worry about.
Well I just didn't care about warranty. Anyway it worked for me but I've Knox tripped
