I have recently picked up an m8 from a local carrier, Appalachian Wireless. CDMA network, shares freqs, towers etc. With Verizon.
I'm usually a Samsung guy and I was wondering when it comes to rooting, etc. If this phone is essentially a vzw m8 as far as root and custom recovery is concerned?? Model is HTC6525L on back of phone though I can find no references online to that. I know other devices would be like sch-I959 (Sammy) or vs980 (LG)etc. Doesn't seem to be the case here. Any help appreciated.
Ps. Been meaning to try and unlock the boot loader via htcdev but haven't had the time. Don't know if that'd offer any more info or not

You're correct, use the vzw recovery
Htcdev is only for gpe devices. You need to use the s-off, root, custom recovery method. You can try but when you enter your phones identifier the website will tell you your device isn't supported.

Didn't know that. It's irritating but at least we can use normal recovery methods and flash ROMs. Samsung and safestrap suck. I'll never go back because of the un-openness Samsung is promoting.

I also have Appalachian wireless but I have the m7. I was able to unlock my Bootloader using htcdev with no problems so u should be OK there. The problem I'm having with rooting my device is I'm afraid to flash a custom recovery because I still want to be able to do ota updates due to fear of flashing a custom rom since there r no roms specifically built for our small carrier. would love to be able to flash custom roms but from what I have read Verizon roms will work but certain features such as mms will not function properly and for me I would rather have stock and everything function properly. I would just like to have root access for the features it unlocks.

Alright everyone, I did search for a similar topic before creating this thread, but I found none. If I missed it, please link me to it. Thanks!
So I'm about to trade my T-Mobile LG G3 for a T-Mobile HTC One M8. I'd like to convert it over to a GPE. Are there any specific things that I have to know about the device (software version etc.) before I make the trade?
For example, was there a recent software update that stopped us from being able to convert it into a GPE device?
Thanks in advance guys. I really appreciate it.

Not sure about a software update preventing it. So long as you can achieve S-Off, I believe it can be converted. I did mine some time ago, found that I missed Sense 6 a lot and my signal strength was pretty low. Radios from GPE are compatible with T-Mobile LTE but the GPE system doesn't work as well with T-mobile signal. Even tried changing radios, no luck. I'd suggest trying a GPE rom that you can flash over the standard rom to see if you like it. Its much easier to flash a sense rom back to the phone than it is to convert a GPE'd phone back to sense.

Got it. If memory serves, you can go to the HTC site and request the bootloader be unlocked, correct? So as far as rooting and unlocking the bootloader, it's a walk in the park, no matter the software version, right?

Yes you can unlock the bootloader through HTCDEV. When you go through the process make sure to choose "all other devices" instead of One (M8). I had trouble with my code until I chose all other devices. Might be fixed by now. I believe to root you have to have S-Off which is only possible through Sunshine unless something has changed. Sunshine will cost you $25. There may be a method of rooting which will allow you bypass S-Off now. Haven't looked into it for a while.

Just doing my part, and trying my best. Most of all, I refuse to answer a question with "OMG this has been answered eleventy-million times!!! USE GOOGLE!!!" Not saying your question was answered before, just having a vent.
In case you're interested, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708589 is the thread I used to make my conversion and it worked exactly as they said it would. Just try a GPE rom first before you do the full conversion. I was sure I would like GPE much better than sense...and I was as wrong as I could be.
I recently got my Harman Kardon edition M8. One thing which disappointed me is the battery life. And I've tried a couple of ROMs. Both gave me around or less than 5hrs SOT. But that isn't enough for me, especially after seeing people get over 7.5 hrs..
Also, I see that Sprint version has very low dev support. So my question is, can I use international ROMs with my Sprint phone? My phone is unlocked, S-OFF and I use 3G only. No 4G.
Thanks.
I would suggest only to run ROMs that specifically stated to support your Sprint (CDMA) variant.

I know that's the better option. But, I saw a post on a thread where he installed the international version and he did some tweaks and everything was working fine for him.
My question, anyways I'm using it as a GSM phone only. So wouldn't it work fine?
Thanks for the reply.

Not necessarily. It has nothing to do with how you use your phone. It has to do with the fact that the Sprint & Verizon CDMA variants actually are different in hardware. Therefore, there is some difference in the ROMs. And no guarantee that permanent damage may even occur from flashing mods meant for the GSM version. In fact, some CDMA users bricked their phones flashing earlier TWRP builds meant for the GSM variant. This has since been fixed within TWRP. But just a worst case example.
If a ROM has been verified to work by someone else to work on Sprint, than its probably ok. But if there isn't prior verification, you are taking a chance; and should be prepared to live with the consequences, whatever they may be.

I believe partitioning on the phones is different. If you install software that over-writes hboot or radio partitions, or the partition tables, you phone is going to brick. There might be other ways in which software can brick a device. But this is the example I know about.
The above happened to some folks that tried to install TWRP (older builds) meant for the GSM version, onto the VZN/Sprint versions. TWRP has since been updated to prevent this. But its one example of how software can brick the device.
There are also countless other examples on other devices, where folks tried to install a ROM or other mod meant for another hardware, and bricked their devices.

Not without opening the phone and JTAG; or replacing the motherboard.
A true brick (and that is the only time I use the word "brick" here) is something you do not want to risk, trust me.

Oh okay. Thanks a lot for the info.
I'll +1 tomorrow since my thanks is limited to 8 per day.
Flashing a GSM rom to CDMA rom is possible but useless imo. Phone antenna will not work (calls, message etc) and you will most likely get stuck in a boot loop. Hard bricking it is also possible. 100% not recommended

What kernels in AROMA did you choose for each installation? This probably matter more than the AROMA carrier selection. In the kernel selection, it clearly states that Skydragon kernel is needed for CDMA devices, and standard kernel is for GSM only.
My guess is that you picked Sprint as the carrier, than incorrectly picked the Skydragon kernel = DOESN'T WORK
Then you picked the GSM generic install with the Skydragon custom kernel = WORKS
Hello devs.. I have an HTC one Verizon and I just switched to straight talk. well while I am at it, I want to unlock completely and install a custom ROM get rid of verizons crap.. I am out of practice really. I used to have all the HTC incredibles, the tilt 2. It was so easy for me to follow how to unlock and cwm and root those phones.
I just cannot grasp how to do all that with this phone. I would like to know or be pointed to the right direction or maybe get some personal walkthroughs to get s-off, unlocked bootloader, obtain root.
everywhere I have been looking, I just don't understand. I have already ported my sim and number from straight talk and did a factory reset. I obviously have the most current updates. I really would like some help otherwise im afraid im going to brick my phone or be forced to keep the Verizon factory.
Android is 5.0.2
Sense is 6.0
6.55 is SDK API level
please help.. I will be avail all day tomorrow to get this all done.
Thank you

Do a google search for "sunshine HTC One m7 Verizon". That is the ONLY way to s-off the phone if you have the newest software already. After that, you can use fastboot to install recovery just like you would have in the old days of your old devices. Look up santod's roms. He has a recovery build you can use with a download link. I also recommend his roms themselves as well. He is very responsive if you follow his instructions and puts out high quality work. Good luck.

Yeah, I was just answering his question about how to unlock and rom. I don't know anything about using it on straight talk. I'd imagine it might work ok, but he's probably not going to have all the bands for full GSM support. Regardless, I think a mod should probably move this out of development section.

well I still have Verizon active... I can just swap sim cards for now then do all the programming then swap back? straight uses same towers and bands as Verizon... same sims just different numbers. I don't see why there would be that big of an issue? and sorry if I posted in the wrong forum category
Hello XDA.
I am new here and it's my first post, so I hope you can bear with me and any information that I am not be knowledgeable of.
I have an HTC M8 International Varient which supports Bands 3,7,8 and 20 for LTE. Unfortunately, my carrier is supporting Band 1 as far as I know.
I have been searching the internet for a couple of days already and I need a bit of help.
I have done the following:
-Installed TWRP
-Rooted Device
-Able to get Device in DIAG Mode through ADB (Not DM Command Service Screen. I cannot get the Modem Screen in anyway)
-QPST and QXDM/DFS CDMA were able to detect the device
-They were able to read the NV Values
At that point things should work, well...they are not. My problem is I cannot write the new band values to the NV. I read the values, edit them, write them, read them again and they are reverted back to what they were previously.
I have searched the internet a little, some people said you need S-OFF, while others said I need a custom ROM and a custom Kernel to disable the Anti Tamper Mechanism, which at this point I have no clues yet.
If I need S-OFF, I need to use Sunshine which is paid. And honestly, I am not interested to pay that much just to get LTE. I heard about Moonshine. Has any one used it?
Can anyone experienced shed some light on this matter please?
Thank you
well you can't change the values on the international m8 as it GSM
this process can only done on Verizon m8
as i read it before some people report that it doesn't work with sprint and all the GSM devices ( m8 )
Sent from my HTC M8 using XDA Labs
Above post is correct. Changing NV values won't stick on your M8 version. S-off won't change that, from what I've seen.
Another method which may work, would be to get s-off, and flash another versions radio/firmware (that supports the desire LTE band). May also need to change CID, MID depending on the radio/firmware flashed.
However its not guaranteed that you will even have LTE service after that. We've seen lots of such cases: radio firmware changed, but LTE still not working.
So the money spent on s-off may be wasted, so its not particularly recommended to try it (since you're obviously hesitant to spend the money, anyway).

Moonshine is really old, and won't work on this device. Same with firewater, if you stumble on that. No point in trying either of those.
Sunshine is really your only option, and you have to pay for it.
Hi guys. I purchased this phone used. IDK if it will have Android 6 or 7 installed on it. I know that it's supposed to be carrier unlocked. My goal is to get this rooted and get TWRP so I can install ViperRom.
Do these steps still apply:
1) Unlock your phone with htcdev.com or s-off it with sunshine http://theroot.ninja (using built in temproot)
2) flash latest twrp from http://twrp.me
3) Using adb, in twrp run - adb shell "echo KEEPFORCEENCRYPT=true>>/data/.supersu"
4) flash latest supersu from http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps...v2-05-t2868133
My understanding is that the Verizon variant would require SunShine app (regardless of whether I'm on Android 6 or 7) and I can't use HTCdev to unlock the bootloader. Can someone please advise what my best course of action is to get TWRP and a custom rom on this thing?

Verizon disables oem unlocking, so you'd need to S-off your device to do any sort of tinkering. From there you won't need to unlock the bootloader, s-off allows you to do everything you need. With that said, if the phone is on Nougat, the only way to s-off is to mail your device to the Sunshine dev. The app won't work for you in that case. If on Marshmallow, you can use the app.
Step 2 is correct, and I don't think you need to step 3 anymore. Just flash whichever rom you need, and they are already rooted so no need to install supersu separately.
Leedroid and ViperROM are probably the most popular Sense-based roms, each with lots of customization options.

No that's what I meant by "verizon disables oem unlocking". HTC Dev unlock = oem unlock = unlocking the bootloader
With the Verizon 10, the only way to flash twrp or anything else is to have s-off. On non-verizon devices, you'd be able to do what you asked.

Are you interested in tinkering with your phone, installing different software on it? If the answer is no, just go to Verizon and buy the 10 or whichever phone you want.
Edit: Just saw that you want to root.
The situation with the Verizon 10 is described in this thread. If you want to root the thing, you absolutely need S-off ("security off"). If the phone you receive is on Nougat, you have to mail it in for S-Off for 25$. If on marshmallow, you can do it via an app that also costs 25$.

Verizon HTC 10 Root Updates?
Hello,
Newb here...new to Androids and new to looking into rooting/tinkering with ROMs. Is there any update on the current state of rooting the Verizon variant of this great phone? I'm on Nougat 7.0 (2.41.605.20) and I am using the phone on the AT&T Network  I am; however, not happy with the issues with 4G lte that the newest 2.41.xxx is causing. I am wanting to flash Viper 10; as I understand it really optimizes this phone well.
I really do not want to S-Off (I am an Information Security Professional and this speaks against the principles I work by  . Do we know of any way to do this other than sending it to Sunshine? There has to have been some strides in the past 3 1/2 months, right?
Thanks

I'm on Nougat 7.0 (2.41.605.20) and I am using the phone on the AT&T Network  I am; however, not happy with the issues with 4G lte that the newest 2.41.xxx is causing. I am wanting to flash Viper 10; as I understand it really optimizes this phone well.
I really do not want to S-Off (I am an Information Security Professional and this speaks against the principles I work by  . Do we know of any way to do this other than sending it to Sunshine? There has to have been some strides in the past 3 1/2 months, right?
Thanks

There's no way to root or flash roms besides getting S-OFF.

Your best bet would be to get SOFF, convert it to the us unlocked version, then put it back to SON, then you'll have newer software/firmware, and have the security re-enabled

Ok...so either way; I'm looking at having to S-Off with Sunshine, then I can do the conversion from Verizon --> US Unlocked as you stated. Do you know if this alone (converting to US Unlocked) will correct the 4G lte issues that the 2.41.xxx has caused with this model? Or...would you recommend that I go ahead and flash Viper 10 ROM?
Thank you and cnat for the responses

It can only help, Verizon is behind the game with software/firmware. I would recommend the swap if you plan on using a GSM carrier long term. Plus you can then flash viper on top of it.

So I came across a couple of articles that said using "Xposed Installer" could be used to flash a new ROM instead of Rooting my device. Do you, or anyone else have any experience with Xposed Installer on the HTC 10?

In order to use Xposed you have to be rooted. Also, at least official Xposed doesn't work on Nougat yet although someone made a modified unofficial version so that it would on some devices.
