[Q] Sd card not mounting - Please Help - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
My phone has started acting up, yesterday it was working fine but then decided to randomly restart by itself.
On restarting I noticed that all my apps that were on the Sd card weren't loading.
The SD card is refusing to mount, i've factory restored, I've taken the battery out left it for a bit and then restarted without sd card, then put the sd card in and REPLACED THE COVER. (which seems to be why most don't mount)
But still it's not mounting, I can't access any folders on my Computer including the files that are saved on the phone.
When using explorer i right click properties and no files show up, the info that does appear except; model name, firmware version, serial number and power source.
I have tried searching around but have been unable to find anything which would fix this issue.
I apologise if there is a post similar to this already out there.
I would highly appreciate the help.
Thanks in advance!

Fixed with a little messing about
I don't know if this is the proper way to fix it.
I am a bit of an impatient person when it comes to phone (yeah i know, not the best of attributes.)
Having read all the people online saying it's because the back lid/cover isn't closed i tried jamming a piece of paper in that section so that when i closed the back cover the added pressure would make the sd card mount.... that didn't help.
What i did next was get a paperclip, hold down the button parallel to the flash and click the sd card out and click it back in, whilst being on the sd card mount screen. Once I saw the text highlight white, i clicked mount, let go of the paperclip and put the cover back on.
For me the SD card mounted without the back cover being on. I have now got access to all my file and the sd card is appearing on windows.

Help!! Sd Card Not Seen By Device

Help! I have an XDA IIs which was working fine for the last two years. It has a 1GB SD Card in there. I used it for TomTom all this time, with no problems at all.
A couple of days ago, I forgot to grab my device from the car as I was in a rush and I left it in the car (powered off, but with TomTom running) most of the day.
When I got back in the car, TomTom wasn't working right so I closed it and tried to re-open it, whereupon I received the nasty message "Cannot determine location of data".
To put it simply, the device no longer recognises the presence of an SD Card! It's not in File Explorer, nor under Settings / Memory / Storage Card.
What is going on?
Here's a list of what I've tried already (none of these ideas has solved the issue):
o Tried a different SD Card
o Tried a soft reset on the device
o Tried a hard-reset on the device
o After hard-reset, tried a restore from a recent Active Sync backup-to-PC.
o Downloaded PocketPC Mechanic and played around A LITTLE (didn't do anything that seemed dangerous like defragging, registry cleaning, etc)
Any help will be VERY gratefully received!
Thanks
Matt
Update... but still have problem
Quick update
I also tried formatting the SD Card. No help (I have since copied all data back onto the card and it still doesn't work).

Apparently, the motherboard your device is dies slowly.
Have you tried a diifferent sd card? reinstalling the software all over again?
Replying to Rafa1215
Yes, I have tried a different SD Card (as noted in the original post, list of things I have tried). It's a 128MB one which works fine in the SD Card reader slot on my PC (my main 1GB card works fine in PC slot as well).
Here's a further titbit of information which may or may not be useful in helping me:
I've tried several times to restore the backup-to-PC I made at the end of April (essentially the same stuff on the device then as now, luckily). Normally, when you insert (or remove) the card, it turns the screen on. Each time I perform the restore (of the same backup, over and over again), the SD Card slot actually performs this function when I insert the card again - but ONLY ONCE each time I restore from backup.
As for reinstalling software all over again... I have performed a hard-reset on the device, and tried the card as soon as it is ready to use... no luck there either.
In reply to vovaxxxx:
Is that a serious comment? The motherboard slowly dies? If that's true then this device is fit for nothing but the rubbish bin!
More ideas are welcome please, I thank you for the feedback!!
If you're luck enough to have a friend that have a BA you could test his sd card on your BA and your sd card on his BA. If his BA can read your card and yours can't read his then you have 2 situations:
1) Your sd card slot is dirty or slightly melted so you have no good contacts, try to clean it.
2) Time to buy a new phone or try to buy a new circuit board for your phone but for the price I think is better you get a new phone.
Edit: If you have $100 you can get a new circuit board here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=310283
search google for panasonic sd formatter or something like this, this is a lil program which is used to format your SD properly. Insert your SD card into the card reader, start the program and reformat the SD card.
The problem is within the SD card file system

If that doesn't work try
Storage Tools by softwinter.com
You can at least do a Scandisk and fix any errors during the scan
OK I formatted the SD card with the Panasonic formatting utility. (Backed everything up to the PC first, from the card!)
Still no difference. To reiterate - the SD Card(s) I am trying to use are working fine in my PC's SD Card reading slot.
I think it's the hardware (i.e. the XDA itself)... LGSilva says I could try cleaning the contacts. Any recommended ways on doing this? The slot is too small to get any kind of decent cleaning implement in there, and I can't dismantle the device because it's held together with special screws (6-pointed-star-shaped heads).
Hi
the company i work for has around 300 device and this happens every now and again. not sure if this will help but normally call our mobile network and get a replacement. it's normally the card reader in the device.

The screws are size 6 Torx bits, suitable sets of these drivers can be bought from Maplins in the UK, although you don't mention where you are located.
There is also a guide to taking the BA to bits in the WiKi and a very comprehensive one containing pictures etc. at the bottom of the WiKi page, well worth reading both before you try taking it to bits - Mike

[Q] Need Help In A Panic

Hello guys,
Well i installed Miui, I rooted my phone, flashed the ROM and it was stuck on the boot for a while. Rebooted went into Recovery and wiped it. Now it works but when i plug it in to the computer it won't pick up the USB. Along with that the SD Card is not picked. When i go into About Phone Sd Card: Unavailable available. So i went into SD Card settings and all of them are unavailable.
Help please! I'd like to go back to stock ROM but can't mount it :|
Really, I don't know why that would be happening and I don't know if this suggestion will help, but try removing the battery and then putting it back in. Maybe even take out the sd card while you're at it and reseat it.

I took the battery out around 8 times already. How i take the SD Card out?
Still didn't work i took out the battery and the SD card
I know searching on these forums is difficult, but part of the reason is because of all the duplicate threads. However, Google is your friend. I searched "SD card and USB fix Evo" on Google, and this was the first link that came up:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695243
This happened to me a while back. Do the SD card fix first, then you can place the files to fix the USB problem on your SD card and you won't need ADB for that portion of the fix.
NVM got it all fixed.

SD Apps dissapeared from list

Has anyone experienced this - and even better have a solution?
running stock 2.29.405.2 for a few weeks now, but all of a sudden apps have dissapeared that are installed on the SD card.
also i cant move any apps (i know not all apps allow) to the SD card as a 'failed to move application' notice appears.
any ideas peeps?
SD card
I would do this.
1)Check your SD card. Can you access your sd card? Could be a corrupted card.
2)Take out your sd card and put it back in.
3)Power off phone and restart. Wait for a while, see if your apps come back.
Isn't 2.29.405.5 out now from OTA?
also I agree - make sure you can access the SD and reboot

Tried all of these - With a different SD card i can move the apps. Does that sound like a corrupt card, and if so is there anything i can do?

It seems to have been pulled (I waited until I had my goldcard available) and is not available now. Is there a link to do it manually?
I am going through the same thing. I determined I had a corrupt card. I will be getting a new card today and reinstalling all of my apps that were installed on the corrupt card.
Had the same issue. Noticed that the .android-secure folder on SD is read only. Changed to read/write in root explorer, rebooted and apps are back.

no joy with that, but thanks anyway.
i might look at deleting that folder and starting again - it will give me an excuse to get rid of all the crap i have anyway.
But first i might try recovery - i know that you cannot see the content of the .android_secure for security reasons
I just recovered from the same problem (tried the tips here, but they didn't work in my case.) I thought I'd add the solution that eventually worked for me, just in case it's of any help to anyone else.
Remove SD card from phone and insert in a Windows PC
Run CHKDSK /F from the command prompt, just in case there are any file errors (there were none in my case.)
Rename the .android-secure folder to something else (it really doesn't matter what you call it.)
Eject the card and put it back in the phone, allow the phone to start up and initialise the SD card. It will create a new .android-secure folder. (I tried creating the folder on the PC, but that didn't work. The phone needs to create it for itself.)
Card back in the PC, and cut and paste the files from the folder that you previously renamed into the new .android-secure folder.
Card back in the phone, and if your problem was the same as mine, your apps are back.
You might also be able to do this with the card in situ via the USB cable. I haven't tried it.
Out of interest, this happened to me after nothing more serious than a dead battery. The phone was at 90%+ charge when I went to bed last night, but dead this morning. I can only assume that I left a power hungry app running by accident.
Thanks for the info. i had already resolved mine by renaming the folder to delete it. luckily i had most apps backed up so it didnt take long to go back in.
I have been trying to think what caused it, and you reminded me that my battery dies a couple of days ago, so was probably this that caused it also.

[Q] Help! Play doesn't recognize sd cards

Hey everyone
I recently bought an xperia play but it has only recognized my micro sdcard maybe once or twice and even then I was still unable to mount it. I know this is a common problem but believe me i've been searching and trying fixes for ages, the battery cover one, repair in se companion etc. So now I think the only thing to try is to downgrade my firmware because the times when it read the sd card was before i updated it. So any suggestions on other fixes or a how to on downgrading would be greatly appreciated bare in mind it will have to be quite in depth as I haven't hacked Sony Ericssons before just a HD2. Thanks for your help
Matt
P.S sorry if this is in the wrong thread or anything like that this is my first post.
I just went through that problem it turned out that my sd card was "damaged"or something like that and the play doesn't pick that **** up at all, so I popped it into my x10 it noticed it right away and fixed it for me. I'm still not sure what the damaged part was cause I was still able to use the card in a computer. Try it in a different phone see if it works
Sent from my R800a using XDA App
Thanks for your help but yeah I tried a different sd, didn't work then i tried formatting both of the sd's still nothing and also tried them in different phones, I have no clue what else to try except downgrading and I don't know where to start
have you pushed the back cover properly into place - it has to click into place - I normally run my finger around the edge of the cover firmly just to make sure.
Normally the card won't mount or will keep un-mounting otherwise - don't know if it would say unrecognized. Maybe you formatted it in a format different to FAT32 - windows does it to bigger cards - try using EASEUS or similar partition managers
The battery cover fix was the first to come up when I started searching and i've been checking it's on securely everytime i put it on and whenever i've formatted it i've also checked that it is in fat32 but i will try a different partition manager and tell you how it goes
Thanks for the help
Tried it, still nothing
Can anybody point me towards a tutorial on how to downgrade or something because I can't find anything and I have no other ideas
Is it possible one of the notches on your back cover is broken and does not let xplay realise the back is on? If you could locate a friend with another back cover or test it in a mobile shop perhaps? Or maybe there is a way to make xplay to always believe that the cover is properly on somehow? Hope it helps
Under Settings/Storage, there is an option to Disable Safe SD Card. Try that to eliminate the cover as the problem.

Good idea i'll check the back cover now. Also I went into settings/storage and there was nothing about safe sd card thanks anyway
Since my last post I have rooted my play and flashed back to an earlier firmware. The phone now detects the sd card but I am having a different problem instead, I am unable to mount because it says blank sd or corrupt etc. I have tried formatting the sd card on my phone and it still won't mount, any ideas?
You have tried using another SD card right? If formatting it won't work, either you have to get a new one or unfortunately, send it in to SE for repair(whatever its called) since it may be the sd card slot reader that's causing the problems.Another question, did the memory card come with your play?

xperia play r800x sd problem fixed
I just went thru what your going thru and found a way to fix it
in addition to my sd card not reconised my wifi and for that matter
the top status bar were not working.
you will need >A working phone with a good sd card <
1-Turn both phones off <your x-play and the other working phone>i know you do not have to unmount but>> MAKE SURE YOU DO THIS to avoid frustation ..trust me ..
2-swap the sd cards
3-pick up the working phone which now has the sd card from your x-play in it <turn it on >
4-if you get a message on the top status bar <Damaged sd card> go to settings >storage>erease sd data
5- If the format worked then it will remount the sd card in to the phone and rebuild the file system in the sd card <if it worked then you are done swap the cards back>
6- <<if it does not and you get a unsuported files on sd card or still broken>> do not swap the sd cards put down that phone and turn on your x-play with the working card from the other phone >>
7- if your x-play is working with the other sd card then replace the sd card its no good
if 5 fixed it gg
if 6 your sd card is no good

All files on external SD card corrupt after unexpected shutdown

Hey guys and girls!
This morning my phone turned off by itself (13% battery left) and needed somewhat longer than usual to reboot (in the meantime I plugged it back in to the charger). First thing I noticed was that my whole theme got reset as well as it started showing me introductional tips ("long press here to move your apps to the homescreen, ecc.). It also started to update apps in the Play Store even though I set it to manual ... so basically a LOT of things were reset.
The biggest problem I'm having now is though that all my files (pictures, videos, music) that are stored on an external micro SD card are corrupt. It's not possible anymore to open anything. I already removed the micro SD card and put it into an adapter to have a look at the files via the laptop. But nothing, even though the sizes of the files seem OK, I can't open them.
Does anyone have a clue as to what exactly happened here? Are those files lost (at least of some I have a backup) or is there anything I can do to "repair" them? Help is really appreciated, thanks!
PS: Things like the card unmounting and re-mounting never occurred. So I can't tell if the card was dying or if actually the phone ruined my files.
Did you happen to be using a SanDisk SD Card? I've had my 10 brick 2 of those until I switched to Samsung SD Cards about a year ago and haven't had issues since.
I never could manage to recover files from the damaged SD cards.
I have a Samsung SD card and had something similar.
I guess I was on Viper Rom and basically my phone restarted around 15-20% of battery. After a long wait for booting back again, all my settings were gone.
Files and others in the SD card was okay but basically until I formatted the card, I wasn't able to boot into the Download Mode to install a new rom...
I fixed the restart issue by installing the official HTC Rom.
Thanks for your replies.
It is indeed a SanDisk 16GB card. It seems though that the card is still working (no problems accessing it via phone or laptop), just the files appear to be broken. In the meantime I also tried apps like PC Inspector File Recovery, but to no success
I'm still on stock HTC Sense by the way, no root, nothing.
Anyone know though why that happened (resetting everything, etc.)?
Hit me with a PM I'll give you a SanDisk restore tool which works quite ok. there is a huge chance some files can be recovered, some will be damaged though. Don't push any new files on the card after you tried to restore the files
HTC 10-Corrupted microSD card
I know this is an older thread, but I was wondering if there is a solution. I have an HTC 10 which has an micro SD card in it, that is "married" to the phone. When connected to a computer, the computer recognizes the phone, and the microSD card, and begins to load the folders/files. Eventually this process stalls, and the phone/drive is no longer readable by the computer. To get the computer to recognize the phone/card again, I need to restart the phone, but the same thing happens again.
I have like 20gigs of data on the card, and cannot just put the card in a reader, because it's encrypted to the phone. Any possible solutions? It's frustrating to see the files/pictures for a minute or two, and then have them disappear. I have tried copying/pasting the files while they're visible, but this often triggers the computer to no longer recognize the phone/memory card. I've tried to un-encrypt the microSD card, but the phone can't recognize/access the microSD card long enough to complete that process.
Please help if you can.
Glenn
