After trawling the internet for about 4 hours, downloading various things and reading many guides, I decided to give up and create this thread.
I have a HTC Wildfire S with the following in bootloader
MARVEL PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-0.90.0000
MICROP-0451
RADIO-7.54.39.08M
Apr 8 2011,17:45:10
Android version: 2.3.5
HTC Sense version: 2.1
Software number: 2.14.771.4
1. OTA always seemed to fail with an icon of a phone with a red triangle (I assume that means missing recovery).
2. RUU always seemed to turn up with Error 191.
3. Created a goldcard, and tried RUU again, still Error 191.
4. Placed rom_01.zip in root of SD card and renamed to PG76IMG, booted into HBOOT where nothing happened.
5. Repeated with rom_02, and same result.
6. Attempted flashing recovery, and then a full RUU zip through fastboot, which neither worked. The errors I received were "FAILED (remote: not allowed)" & "FAILED (remote: 42 custom id check fail)" respectively.
7. Extracted the boot.img & system.img, and attempted to flash via fastboot, and received the "FAILED (remote: not allowed)" error.
8. Downloaded an AIO toolkit, and attempted flashing recovery, and the zip file and received the same errors. Also attempted perm root from there, which still had no results.
9. Somehow factory reset it, and repeated all of the above, still with no results.
I would appreciate any help,
Thank you.

Using HTCDev? As updating the HBOOT seems to fail. I have to skip the first couple of steps. When trying to get the oem token, it still doesn't work.

First of all you need to unlock your bootloader. If htc official site is not working for you, then you try below methods.
Try THIS or This one
Good luck!

Then, I think you need to check your USB "cable/pc-port" and htc driver on your PC. If possible then try with fresh PC/install.

Try the following commands, with your device in fastboot mode and your rom1.zip and rom2.zip in you adb folder. Also ensure that your command prompt is ran from that folder by using shift+ right click then open command window here.
[Code/] fastboot oem rebootRUU
Fastboot flash zip rom1.zip
Code:
The command window might now ask to flush or reflush the command. So
[Code/] fastboot flash zip rom1.zip
[Code]
Wait for this to complete then run
[Code/] fastboot flash zip rom2.zip
(Same reflush stuff may come again, if so reissue command again)
Fastboot flash zip rom2.zip
Fastboot reboot
[Code]
All should now be well.

Thanks you SO much! It updated my hboot, but when I tried the HTCDev method, it failed upon flashing the unlock_code.bin. Instead I used the HTC unlocker tool thing, it worked like a charm! Installed a custom recovery via fastboot and now trying out all the ROMs!

Hi,
my htc desire is bricked... impossible to boot etc..
when i put battery and i push on power button, in 4 corners exclamation in triangles appear. (image in attachment)
my phone is S-OFF, android 2.1
i tried upgrade with sd card.. and with android sdk tools..but is not working.
Please HELP !!!
thnx.
screen image
please give full details of your phone. What hboot? custom? what RUU?
What did you do before it broke? in what order? then what happened?
i can't see any detail.. I have access only to the fast boot.
never custom firmware.. never s-on
during the upgrade i disconnect the phone.. and i tried really all things.. installing RUU from sdcard , upload RUU with sdk tool etc. etc..
before trying updates the SDK tools i had access to the boot menu (with power + volume down combinations) but now i can not even have that.. only screen with 4 exclamation icon.. and fastboot access with sdk-tools (android 1.0 phone drivers)
since 4 days i try everything... but no result.
this htc really make me sick.
please help me.
thank you advance
Alright then, how did you s-off? What RUU did you use?
You just rooted and kept the same software?
If you disconnected during upgrade you may have bricked it and only HTC can resolve.
When you RUU what failure message do you get?

I am sure if you can get into Hboot / Fastboot all is not lost, just use adb commands to restore functionality to your phone, like reflashing recovery and stuff.

Looks like a radio brick. You never did tell me what RUU you are using.
You cant use fastboot if you are S-ON
I had that to, and i get it running again.
In my case i had flashed the cm7r2 from alpharev before, so i had to use the downgrader first, to install my stock RUU.
After downgrading i startet the RUU.exe from windows, in the first try it stoped with an error.
If this happens you have to do all steps exactly ass the RUU installer says.
In the first try i didnt do that just klicked the steps away and didnt even read what RUU recomends.
But in the second try i did all these steps and i get my phone up running again.
And its important to use the right RUU for your phone otherwise you will get an signature fail
Edit: If your not s-off and you have isues getting into recovery, try to flash revolutionary, will gain you s-off and clockworkmod recovery

Hey all, I dont usually post questions, cause I usually am able to find all my answers, but this time i really hit a stump. not sure if its just cause my case is unique.
I have a HTC__622 (so JB compatible), with HBOOT 0.43 running Android Revolution 9.7.2, and im looking to upgrade to JB. However, despite many guides and tutorials, I can't seem to get past updating my HBOOT. Let me list out what I've done (I was following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1660807, following method 2/3, cause i haven't cooked a rom since windows mobile LOL)
1-downloaded "RUU_ENDEAVOR_U_ICS_40_hTC_Asia_HK_1.29.708.15_Radio_2.1204.122.17_release_268338_signed" (my original one was 1.29.708.2)
2-extracted rom.zip from the RUU, and copied over boot-signed.img, system.img, recovery-signed.img
3-flashed boot-signed.img, and recovery-signed.img. system.img failed.
4-relocked bootloader
5-this is where i get stuck, the RUU cannot detect my phone in fastboot mode and so I cant run the RUU.exe.
anyone got any ideas as to why i can't run RUU.exe from my comp while my phone is in fastboot mode? thanks in advance!
I have no idea what you are doing. To install an RUU:
fastboot oem lock
Run RUU.
All this extracting and flashing is madness.
When you boot into bootloader, what does it say on the screen?

the error i get is the ruu cannot detect the phone through usb (while phone is in fastboot mode). and i cannot run the ruu while phone is in normal mode because i can't boot in normal mode when i lock my bootloader.
Does the phone say fastboot USB when you have it in fastboot/bootloader
Then try fastboot devices first to see if your serial comes up ! If it does you can run the ruu.exe from the pc with admin rights.....
Should do the trick
Ok I would try to do everything from the beginning.
To make it easier and faster you can use the script form that thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1924003&highlight=jbfwflasher
Then you don't need to install RUU.
Remember to place in the folder boot.img from the rom which you want to flash later.
Have a good fun

hmm, so you're saying I just need to flash firmware.zip (for my HTC__622 of course), to get the hboot 1.36? i'll give that a shot and report back.
--update 1--
alright so after trying to just flash the new hboot 1.36 (from firmware.zip), i am met with this:
E:\Utilities\Android\One X\JBFWTOOL20>fastboot flash zip firmware-622.zip
sending 'zip' (12875 KB)...
OKAY [ 1.647s]
writing 'zip'...

(bootloader) signature checking...
(bootloader) checking model ID...
(bootloader) checking custom ID...
FAILED (remote: 42 custom id check fail)
finished. total time: 3.130s
how did you flash it and make it work?
--update 2--
I must've downloaded the wrong (or renamed the wrong) firmware.zip file, i just redownloaded and bam everything works. thanks a lot onexed, that did help. basically, even if you're on 0.43, just flash the firmware.zip for your phone, and get onto a newer hboot, and all is well. thanks!
Welcome i'm glad it worked out for you enjoy jellybean

Flash any ROM from recovery. You are still S-OFF. If you lost recovery, then reflash one. Use the guide in my signature to guide (section A-OFF no recovery)
Being S-OFF should leave you flash any ruu you want, but get working phone first and then try again.

In your case, you may be able to skip right to step 5, so I'd try the htcdev stuff first. If you don't get an oem identifier key, you'll have to start from step 1.
1) You need http://www.mobfirmware.com/dl/behtas... dhd/rom.zip
Move it to where your adb files are.
Then do the following from adb:
2) adb reboot oem-78 >> this will put you in RUU download mode. I found you can run this command from CWM Recovery. Though... if you don't have any recovery I'm unsure how to hit RUU download mode. There is an .exe from HTC Dev that'll do it from Fastboot, so there must be a command (fastboot reboot oem-78 maybe??)
Once you're at the black screen w/ silver HTC logo, type:
3) fastboot flash zip rom.zip >> This will change your hboot to one w/ an oem signature. Once it's successful, type:
4) fastboot reboot
5) Now, you'll need to go to htcdev.com/bootloader and follow the instructions to get your KEY (fastboot oem get_identifier_token) and paste it to HTCDev to get your boot unlock bin file emailed to you. Follow the last steps to unlock your bootloader.
The steps are something like: boot to fastboot> type oem command> copy / paste key to htcdev> receive email> download .bin file to adb folder> run command to unlock w/ .bin file (it's on the htcdev site).
NOW you can flash the custom recovery or boot imgs without getting the "Signature Verified Fail" Error.
Goodluck! I just went through this whole process of no CWM and no ROM so you can get your phone up and going w/ a custom rom from where you're stuck! Don't give up!

Why would he want to unlock the bootloader when he is already S-OFF?
Besides, it is not possible to flash ruu with an unlocked bootloader. And signature fail will always be there. Even custom roms are signed. Of course not HTC signature, digitally signed.

I still haven't done that but I think I'm onto something -
My HBOOT version is 2.00.0027 and a few sources/tutorial sites say it's incompatible with HTCDev, well I think this might be the problem if it's true.
And if it is, how can I update it?

yeah you need .0029 for it to work, http://www.htcdev.com/ruu/PD9810000_Ace_Sense30_S_hboot_2.00.0029.exe
there's the update, run it and follow the instructions
EDIT: Why would you unlock the bootloader, you already have S-Off.Use the Easy Ace Root Tool by glevitan, found here.

Okay, thanks. I followed it, and got to step 7 [Run the EasyAceRoot.cmd as Admin]
I open EasyAceRoot as admin and it's opening for a brief second and then quickly closing.
Is there a way around?

Put the folder it contains to the root of your primary hard drive. Eg. C:\EasyAceRootTool and run command prompt as admin, type in "cd EasyAceRootTool" and it should be able to listen to commands now.

Thank you, I one less thing to take care of,
I started the easy ace tool but it uses the RUU, which can't update my phone because my HBOOT version is 2.00.0027.. [If I understand correctly]
Is there a way to update the hboot without RUUs? [or RUUs that work with 2.00.0027?]
EDIT: I've done step 3 [Flash CWM Touch Recovery] and in the end it said I that I'm not rooted, but I can't see a superuser app anywhere?
I tried to do step 4 [Root Flashing SU in in CWM recovery] but it only says in the end the I'm not rooted and the phone shows a red triangle with a [!] in the middle. help?

Ah okay, let's make things easier for you, as your boot loader shows, you already have S-OFF, so you're free to install a rooted custom ROM, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377757 assuming that you have fastboot drivers installed, you can follow the instructions, and install this recovery, post results when you're done, ask if you need the fast boot interface and drivers

Yeah, you need root access to install cwm over the app, that's where fast boot comes in handy, power down the phone, remove and reinsert the battery, hold down volume down and power, then select FASTBOOT, when in hboot, plug the cable in and open command prompt (EasyAceRootTool has fast boot tools in the \tools\win folder) post results

Edit: The drivers are in the \tools\windrivers folder, as I said in the other post, put the \tools\win folder in the root of your C drive, and open command prompt and type CD win (or whatever you named the folder, win is default) and then move the recovery.img file into the Win folder, type "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" and that should be done, post results

2.Removed and reinserted battery
3.got to hboot
4.plugged cable in
5.moved recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.1.5-ace.img to the win folder

7.opened the cmd thing and got to the win folder
8.typed fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
9.results:

writing 'recovery'... FAILED (remote: not allowed)

edit: okay. got the recovery.zip file..
still the same result..
btw: a small correction, the Easy Ace tool said in the end that I am now rooted, not "I am not rooted" [typo],
though the whole process had like 4 "device not found" errors.

Hi
Take the sdcard out of the phone and check and see if you have access to the volume buttons again. If so does your hoot have a factory reset option? Should be forth one down if it does.
Your hboot is not htcdev unlockable, but you can attain s-off if we can get it to boot. If the factory reset is not an option try booting into recovery, mash all the buttons until the recovery text options come up and factory reset from there, then report back here

That is whole world's of not good. That means that the area in the bootloader holding the information about the phone, and more likely how to boot is corrupted. The only way to try get out of this at this point is going to need another android phone. You will need to make what's called a gold card, which will format your sdcard making it into a special sdcard which commands htc phones to ignore CID. Once you have this we can attempt to flash a ruu update with a bootloader update and hope that it fixes the issue. But if it fails your only other option aside from getting htc to fix it (unlikely for free) will be to pay to use an xtc clip, force the device to become s-off and them flash several bootloaders in the hope that one works. Let me know what you want to do next pal.

You need to create one using an micro sdcard of 2-4 gb. (The one in the phone already should do ) you will need to place the phone into another android phone, or tablet, and download the app goldcard helper. Use it to determine the reverse CID of the sd card. Then go to this website link here and tell it the reverse CID. It will then let you Download a goldcard.img. once you have that you will need to go to this thread (link) and download this package. This will have a program called goldcard helper. Using this program you will combine the goldcard .img with the sdcard and then you will be good to go to run a ruu.

thanks for helping man, i'll wait for you.

well, so the first step is to put an external sd card in another android phone, and download this app, and get the code needed to put in that link u gave me?
the job in that thread requires:
5. A htcdev unlocked bootloader follow my previous guide here.
6. cwm recovery installed.
7. superuser installed.
and all of these don't exist in my case
the thread works with adb, and i don't have
and does a 8gb card work? 'not 2 or 4)
edit:
can i pass all the steps to GoldCardTool.exe?
and what comes after?

Yes skip all of it until it talks about gold cards. All you need to do is make the gold card and then run the ruu that's in the downgrade package. It's the same hboot that you are on but it should flash without any issue. If you get error 131 then the goldcard has failed. You can certainly try with a 8gb but personally I've found that the bootloader struggles with anything over 4gb.
So to recap.
Use the app to generate the reverse cid of the sdcard.
Then insert the reverse cid number into the website I linked and download the goldcard.IMG
Then follow the goldcard instructions in the guide where it refers to goldcard tool.exe
It is recommended to use an external micro USB card reader and not a phone when writing the goldcard.
Once done place goldcard into phone,
Then connect phone to PC and then double click the ruu.exe
If it runs without error then wait for reboot of the phone, hopefully all will be well.
If the phone is not picked up then issue the fastboot command fastboot OEM rebootRUU And then try again.
Any error codes from any program just post back here, sorry for my late reply
Edit here is a good tut with a more in depth explanation of goldcard tool. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1145035

well,
i got the reversed CID, then i got the goldcard.img from that site
now after i load it to that .exe tool, i get:
An error occured Object reference not set to an instance of an object. tool used: 0.0.5.
i found another version of that toll: 0.0.7, i got that problem:
object reference not set to an instance of an object
i used both files as admin,
and also tried compatibility mode (i'm using win8)

Hmm. ive been re-reading my info on goldcard (its been a while) and it turns out goldcardtool.exe has been know To have issues with cardreaders, so keep the card in the working android phone and mount it to the pc as usb mass storage and try again.
also run it compatability mode windows xp sp3 if possible and if it still fails post your reverse cid to this thread, ask nicely and @matter1 may be able to help you with a new goldcard.img, just incase the one from the website is faulty.
oh and use version 0/0/7 pal
sorry the problem that i didn't enable usb mass storage, it worked now and said that the sd card now is a gold one
now the next step is putting it in the htc-not working phone, and run the ruu.
edit: at last the phone booted up
i used http://revolutionary.io/ to install the recovery and root the phone
thanks for the big assistance
