Download the provided FTF File and just flash the system

Yes they are, but Sony got online unlocking service if you want to unlock your bootloader. At least that was the case with my Xperia Arc S.

Bro u have to either unlock your bootloader or downgrade ur xperia, only then u will be able to root your xm
For Locked Bootloader ( have to downgrade first to 4.1.2 or 4.2.2) and Unlocked too - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2709911

relock BL then update via Sony Update Services
or
flash new fw using flashtool (simple way)
re-root

You can use flashtool and flash this ftf . After that you can root using munjeni tool. It;s the simplest way . Keep reading the threads and you'll find every info that you need
