What ROM would be best for my father? He would like the 4.4.x on his unlocked galaxy nexus. Is there one out there that's extremely stable, has google apps already in the ROM and has the Google now launched built in?

Like you, I'm not a GNex expert. I'm helping my wife with flashing her GNex which my brother gave to her after she broke her own phone. But, I'm wondering if it would help if you could tell us which carrier he's on?
ShinyROM will probably be the best for your father.
No, no and yes. If you want a stable rom you need to use stock. Any rom needs to have the gapps flashed seperately because of copyright. There is one rom that has the gapps in it but that can not be named here. Almost every rom with kitkat has the gel launcher. So just try some. Then see whats best..

SlimKat or CM would be your best bet. A lot of other ROMs are pretty stable too but those are the ones I've had as daily drivers for an extensive time.
"Best" is subjective. If he/you are to busy to flash/try different roms; stick with stock.

Is it me or has development for the galaxy s3 slowed down dramatically? Have most of the device switched to another device?
Some devs have moved onto the Note II, while others are still developing. I actually think development is still quite strong for our device. There's over 10 AOSP roms that's been updated since March 1st and there's probably over 10 TW roms updated since March. I helped a friend of mine mod his EVO LTE and I felt like his device was way more limited in ROM selection than ours was.
Not only that, the developers have pretty much everything running smoothly. What exactly needs to be updated? TW ROMs are updated, AOSP ROMs are pretty much all 4.2.2...
Once the S4 drops TW development will pick up, and when 5.0 gets released AOSP will pick up.
Right now, I'm running the latest version of Android with a slew of extra features and no bugs at all. Not much to develop.

LiquidSmooth stable release.
Well I see no reason to continue development like the past if most ROMs are pretty stable already sure when a new update comes every devs will push out updates with whatever is new in stock but other than that ROMs are pretty stable and its best to be left like that. That's just my opinion though.

development is still running strong (Have you seen the changes constantly being made to The People's Rom and Mother of all roms for instance?) I run either of those, and they are always adding new features to please the people who run them. So i don't see development slowed at all. As more things trickle down the pipeline via release or port, from another device, they will get added. Development is strong with this one. :silly:

Most roms are stable now. Most devs are waiting for the official 4.2 as well. Plus some have moved to the Note2 or getting there hands on the S4.

I'll just keep mine or upgrade to the 32GB TMO version when it comes out. I'm guessing its the US Snapdragon version (compatible w/ AT&T & TMO) & we should be able to install it on ours w/o any issues. I'm all guessing here.

Why would anyone switch their gs4s to that? Can't aosp just be cooked up from that version? It'll deff be much more bug free then aosp at this point

You shouldn't feel bad about your purchase. I'm quite happy with mine so far (except the overheating issue lately).
I don't have the AOSP version yet, so I can't really speak of the features that are/aren't going to be there.
I'm guessing if they make it true stock Android, there will be no Samsung bloat at all.
So it's basically a much more powerful version than any Nexus phone will ever be,
and as such the price is quite high. Personally, I would not consider it at that price.
I'm happy with my T-Mo, and with a few customization here or there, I can always get stock.
This is really geared toward the hard-core Android fans/developers. You can't doubt the S4 has the best internal hardware
of any phone out there, and there lies possibilities.
I also heard the news from google I/O. Does this mean that this version of the S4 will be as open as a nexus and easy for developers to make their custom ROMs for it?

Sony basically did the same thing with the ZR, took complaints and made a new phone out of it
Just purchased a 600$ Ip57 phone? Well there's IP58 now! (Waterproof not resistant)
It's good to have options, but honestly most people that buy pure vanilla Android are experienced users. Most will have no clue rather it's Vanilla or not.
So there in lies the questions. Why put this out after and most that come here that have an s4 already hacked it to death no? So I don't see the point of the users here who want to upgrade to this when you just put a vanilla type ROM on it.

Not true. my nexus 4 gets bugs every once in a while.
If the hardware is identical to the tmoble version then you should just be able to flash the image through Odin right? Seems kind of like the galaxy nexus where you flash takju from yakju or whatever and boom, you are getting the Google play version of updates, wallet functionality etc. If anything it says Samsung has opened their flagship to aosp right?
Even if you think $650 is too much this means that potentially, Samsung will get touch wiz updates to new versions faster as there will be nexus level compatibility with each new android update. I'm not saying immediate but they will have an inside track based on the fact that Google will actively update their device through AOSP for at least 2 years.

CM will always have bugs due to the way they change the Android coding. Where it is stable and great work people should never look for a bug free OS

Hey guys, so recently I dropped and cracked my Nexus 4 and the digitizer stopper responding, and I was forced to sell it on ebay. I love the Nexus experience, and every phone I've owned to this date (Nexus or not) has run a stock Android ROM. So I was just offered a good price for a tmobile Galaxy S3 and I was wondering if there are and stock 4.3 ROMs for the d2tmo. The newest supernexus rom (v3.0) is not supported by the d2tmo, but is by the galaxy s2 i9100 which I am now considering because of that. I was wondering if anyone could point me to a ROM that provides an almost nexus experience for the US versions of the Galaxy S3. I have searched for hours and haven't found anything yet. Cheers!

Thanks for the recommendation, I came across that ROM when I was searching earlier. Does anyone know why there haven't been many attempts at an AOSP stock ROM for this specific version of the Galaxy S3? Is it just an unpopular concept or is the hardware of the device difficult to develop on?

I'd say start with Galaxy S3 Resource Bible. Practically all the roms are listed there with a short summary or review.
There are 4 variations of this device in US. One for each carrier. T-Mo has a SGH-T999L as well as T999N. Those 2 have different radio antenna but rest the same. So if you check for roms on the 4 carriers sub forums, you will se plenty roms.
A lot of developers have made the roms for ATT Version SGH-I747. People realized it works just fine for T-Mo version. So these are called ATT/TMO roms. To my knowledge Slim, Illusion, Pacman and Liquid offer version 4.3 All of these are AOSP 'ish. I personally used to use Liquid but after a lot of shopping around, moved to Slim Rom. I am told KitKat version of Slim, the SlimKat is around the corner. Their current 4.3 version has been rock solid and is out for quiet some time. If you liked the Nexus experience, you will like Slim equally.

Liquid most definitely is AOSP. Not sure but I think the other one is too. I haven't seen any kang there.
Just started this to see what other users might be interested in, plus it will hopefully fuel the interest of our excellent developers to spice up our phone some more. I will kick it off.
I personally love AOSP and especially AOKPA (AOKP with Paranoid Android features) ROMs and would really love to see one here. If that is too boring, then perhaps someone can make something fresh and unique? Maybe a hybrid ROM based on a Stock ROM with AOKP Rom Control or CM Interface built in with as many AOSP apk files that you can get working. It has only been done to my knowledge on Samsung SGS2 by jazzk and can be found here. I used to use this ROM and it was incredible.
Battery life of the stock ROM plus AOKP love........

I would try Slimkat to start. It's minimalistic, yet still has the options you're looking for plus some new ones. Most importantly, data works and it's rock stable. I'm not saying it's the best, but that's what I'd recommend based on what you said. If you have the time to spend, I would try all roms. The devs put a lot of hard work into them, and honestly they're all awesome.
