My Sprint Galaxy note 2 Wireless Charging mod *No holes!!*

Hey guys. I just wanted to show you how I successfully added wireless charging to my Note 2.:good:
Parts used:
-Palm Touchstone back cover: Here
-Palm Touchstone Charging Dock: Here
-3M Copper tape
-Solder
-Liquid electrical tape
No need to cut holes in the plastic. Works like a charm!
Even though I probably wont use it due to the fact I will always have a case on my phone, and it wont work through the case. I can still show it off to my friends with GN2's for fun..lol.
Notes:
Pad closest to the top of the phone is Positive, closest to the bottom is negative.
Magnets hold the phone in place on the charger, but placement of the inductive unit on the back cover is key so the bottom of the phone sits flush on the table.

Well, I just finished it last night. I usually only charge it at night, and I usually am still not completely dead by the end of the night anyways. To be honest I did it just for fun, I dont really think I will actually use it too often only because I wont go without a case on the phone, and it wont work with a case. But just for kicks ill try to kill the battery and test the time to a full charge and post the results..

This is pretty neat. I was thinking about using my og EVO 4g wireless charging stuff and cannibalizing it to do the same but never got up the motivation to do it. Sweet that it works. +1 for you sir for ingenuity.

Have been contemplating doing mine as well.
Getting it to work through some kind of case is key.
My evo didn't seem as fiddly to hold on too. The note is a little harder to hold on too and just a matter of when the I drop it
A case like the uag that I'm using now but with an exposed back would work just right.

I used a qi receiver and it charges through my seidio surface case no problem.

Any issues with the S-Pen? I'm asking because in this thread, the receiver is placed upside down and about 1/4 inch below yours. They were stating any issues with the s-pen would be because of the placement of the receiver.

No problems at all. I cant think of any possible reason why the S-Pen would be affected at all, could you??

My sprint note 2 has had problems charging from USB.USB was lose and the screen wouldn't work sometimes while charging .so I took the phone apart to find a way to hook up a charging port.I dnt have a wireless charger but knew where the prongs were supposed to be.I instead soldered the positive and negative to the prongs.I then soldered the other end of the wired to a auxiliary input female end.And used the male end on the usb/wall charger end.Works just fine to charge.my phone doesn't stop on its own and I am able to use it without the touch screen hanging up.hit a 100% for the first time in months.

Hi. What qi receiver did you purchase? And was it for your sprint SPH-L900 note 2? I have this one but cannot find a qi receiver.

DIY magnetic charger

I made a magnetic charger for the S4 that works really well! It is similar to the setup I had for my HTC Sensation http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1283200. I've had it in two different cars, one of which was a Subaru I used to offroad and never had any problems with it falling off. As far as the parts I used:

1. I cut the end off of the stock wall charger and spliced onto the 19v charger since that is what the wall charger outputs.
2. I folded the circuit in half glued it in to the box. I used a hallmark jewelry box that I cut half the height off of. The box is approx. 2.5x3.5--near perfect fit.
3. I centered the magnets and glued them in place before taping/gluing the box closed.
4. I marked out the measurements on back of the case and drilled holes. The case is hard inflexible plastic so it drilled really well.
5. Place case on box and match magnet polarities before taping them in place.
6. Use double sided tape to affix the box to your dash. Or, if you feel fancy, I bought the vehicle specific mount from ProClip and taped it to that.
7. Run cables for charger, or just plug in.

Unfortunately the NFC doesn't work. Although I used it, losing it wasn't that big of a deal for me.

That Qi receiver is only rated at 600mah, there's no way it will keep the phone charged if it's being used while in the car. Even a 1A charger will let the phone slowly die while using navigation& having the screen on.

You are right. If using navigation and music it will discharge faster than it will charge, but it is VERY slow to do so. However, if you just listen to music with the screen on it charges fine. About 10% an hour.

Very cool. A bit expensive for me, but it'd be nice to have in my car.

I took my old power mate case for my s3 and took out the internals. I have a incipio case that I cut out the silicon layer to fit the circuit board with out adding any bulk to the case.

Official Nexus 5 Wireless Charger, First Impressions.

I had the tilted wireless charger already (link bellow) but decided to get the official wireless charger as well.

With the Chinese charger I was using the stock nexus charger and cable because they are much better then the cables that came with the charger, more detail in the link bellow

The info you need to know is that the OEM nexus charger and cable put out about 1000-1100mA while the same cable paired with a samsung 2a block was able to push past 1600mA but not keep it there, leveling out at 1200mA. The OEM block and cable with Chinese charger puts out between 650mA and 730mA
So how does the official Nexus charger compare?
Well to start I tested the new cable with the OEM block and it was putting out just over 1100mA, so we know the cable is better then the OEM cable. Then I tested the new cable with the block that comes with it and got a steady 1600mA and it didnt drop. Now the block itself doesn't say anything on it as to what it puts out, but the charger base says 1.8a, is that what the block puts out? Regardless the block is much better then the Samsung 2a block.
I don't use a case so the phone on the charger itself puts out only a little bit more then Chinese charger keeping a steady 768mA. Now it can drop below and above that number but it really likes 768mA. So while it does have a great cable and block, if all you care about is speed then charger itself is a little faster but not by much compared to the Chinese charger.
As far as usability, I cant get the nexus charger to miss. I can throw it on and it connects every time. With the Chinese one it didn't always connect and i had to make sure i got it in the right spot and make sure, even if I heard the noise, that it didn't disconnect and was actually charging. With the nexus charger I feel confident that the magnets are lining it up and it gets a good connection every time.
As and added bonus, I have heard a lot about how you could possibly charge while vertical attached to a wall. I decided to try this and I can attest that the weak link will be the charger holding the wall not the charger holding the phone, as long as you don't use a case like me. The magnets are more then strong enough to hold the phone vertically, in fact they are more then strong enough to hold it upside down, I tried! The pad that sticks to the surface is just as strong as I've been hearing as well. I literately just slapped it on the wall and then threw the phone up and its holding thus far. I have it only a few inches above my night stand and will update if it falls, but so far it has held up to me taking the phone off and on about 50 times with no issue. I'm not sure how it would hold up as a car mount, only because I don't know how the sticky part of the base would hold up to extreme hot and cold. I image it would probably fall, especially if completely vertical.
I would definitely recommend the Nexus charger over a Chinese one. I you have the $50 then its a no brainier, it was even a couple bucks cheaper then that on amazon and my prime membership got it here on Monday when i ordered on Saturday afternoon. If you only have $13 bucks and don't mind waiting 3 or more weeks then Chinese one charges almost as fast.

I too finally went from the orb to the new charger because I wanted a vertical mount. I'm blind as a bat with my contacts out and wanted to be able to see the time on my phone while in bed. With the orb, the angle was bad and my nightstand is taller than my mattress, making it hard to see. So I got the new charger, put it on the side of my nightstand and it's holding just fine. Holds the phone great too and now I can see the time on my phone. As long as you can get a smooth, flat surface, I don't see why mounting vertically would be an issue.

just wanted to say, it did end up falling off the wall the 2nd night while charging, the charger from the wall, not the phone from the charger. A good sized piece of 3m double sided tape right in the middle of the charger fixed that and I've had no problems since.

Can you advise please if the Google charger cuts out once the phone has reached 100% or does it change to a trickle charge? Looking at some of the alternatives (e.g. on Amazon) I haven't found any that automatically cut out at 100% although a few mention about changing to a trickle charge. What's your experience in this regard?

Have you considered using this charger in the car? From what you're saying, the hold issue seems to be the charger itself. Using double sided 3m thick tape may solve the issue.
The reason I'm curious is because I and many other previous Palm Pre users used to use the touchstone wireless charger in their cars and the phone never fell of even on extreme bumps. It was great being able to simply place the Pre on the charger and if you were lucky you could put the touchstone right in your line of sight (I have an 06 civic so the touchstone fit right next to the steering wheel, to the right. Look at my profile pic or do a search for palm Pre wireless charging in the car and you'll come up with hundreds of results and pics).
Do you think the charger's internal magnets would be strong enough to hold the nexus 5 in place while driving? Right now, I still use the touchstone as a place holder for my 5 as the internal metal discs on the 5 line up nicely with the internal magnets in the touchstone. I did modify the touchstone slightly and added magnets every 90° starting at the 45° position and then the other 3 were 90°apart from the initial magnet. I'll try to post a pic or a video of what I mean. The touchstone is not a qi charger so it doesn't charge but it certainly makes for a super convenient spot for the phone to be especially when using navigation. Also the nexus has not fallen once while driving over some pretty harsh bumps.

Making my own wireless charging case

So I'm looking into the possibility of making a wireless charging solution on my own. I have lots of wireless chargers at home, work, in the car, and I would really benefit from getting wireless charging working.
I took a USB Qi charging coil and soldered wires, which I then attached (well, just touched ) to either end of the magnetic connector, and it worked.
The difficulty I'm facing is, how can I keep these wires touching the magnetic charging port semi-permanently without doing anything dangerous like attempting to solder it directly.
So I'm wondering if anyone has any neat ideas of how I might rig this up. Any ideas would help a lot! If I come up with something good, I'll make a guide so others can do it.

I've been thinking about making my own wireless charging case similar to the sony branded case but using high quality leather, and an oem qi charging circuit with a 3d printed base clip with the circuit connectors integrated into the clip, just to ensure constant connectivity.
just looking into prices for scrap leather now.

Have you tried tape? It would be covered up by your case anyway, right?

I've thought of tape but I've yet to figure out a way to tape it where it will definitely stay in place.
I might be able to get a case that would cover it, but my current cases have holes so that magnetic chargers could be plugged in.

I've decided to try using copper tape to connect a Qi coil to the magnetic dock port. I'll see how it goes. Hopefully it will be as easy as I'm hoping it will be.

So I finally managed to make it work. Unfortunately, I had to solder.
I gave up with trying to line things up just right and keep it in place, so I just soldered a Qi receiver to the magnetic charging port, wrapped it around to the back of the phone, and fit in a case. It charges wirelessly now, so I'm happy. Unfortunately, I don't know if I'll ever be able to clean it up in the future if I want to sell the phone. But to me, wireless charging was super important. I was also able to continue using my Z1C battery case which uses the magnetic port, so I'm pretty happy with the end result.

Pictures as promised. I had been concerned adding this might block NFC, but NFC works just fine. Obviously, magnetic charging cables don't work (but a Z1C charging case I have does.)
It adds some thickness behind it so the case doesn't fit quite perfectly, but well enough to stay on. I didn't have thinner cables, but having some might have been able to decrease the thickness. Also, I'm not necessarily good at soldering, so I just did what I could.
But I can charge it on my bedside table and in my iOttie Qi dock in my car, so I'm cool with it.

hmm not pretty, but i guess it works. how is the charging speed?
you should be able to clean it up fine if you use some solder wick.

Thanks for blazing this trail for us, mighty brave to solder to your phone like that! Now that you've had this set up for a few weeks, is it holding up ok? I'd just about give my left nut for an actual phone case that simply has a wireless receiver built in and taps into the magnetic charger pins, but I doubt anyone will ever make one since (I believe) the Z3C is discontinued. I mean, they make those giant external battery packs for the Z3C that use the pins, so why not a qi-compatible one??? Anyway, no way I'm soldering to my pins so I'm basically trying to mold a connector out of epoxy that I can squeeze between the side of the case and the pins. (Basically I pushed one of my magnetic cable connectors into a clay bar and filled w/epoxy.) It's still drying so I have no idea if it's feasible at all, but wanted to pop in and say thanks for the inspiration.

Not good I'm afraid my friend... My first attempt (trying to mold a connector out of epoxy using a clay mold) failed, the thing came out looking like a chewed up piece of gum and just wouldn't work. My next attempt involved slicing up a couple of cheap magnetic adapters and cables to try to trim down the connectors to something reasonably sized, but they become really brittle when you cut them that thin... Unfortunately, I think it'd take someone with some type of plastic molding equipment or maybe a 3d printer (that is capable of making really small, fine-detail parts) to make this thing. I'm still disappointed that Sony makes a wireless case for the Z3, but not the Z3C, but I've also come to realize that the Z3C has such good battery life that maybe I don't really need such a case. (I come from a long line of Nexus, HTC, and Samsung devices so I've become somewhat of a charging addict!)
tl;dr: Just enjoy the Z3C and use the handy magnetic dock for overnight charging.

just looking at the magnetic connectors on the z3c I think there might be a way but it'll add a couple more mm to the height, would need to get someone with a 3d printer, but if the wallet is made of leather and is inserted underneath, with the qi wireless pad, and two wires made into connection terminals which would then clip onto the phone so a solid connection is made between those terminals.

Just to answer some questions, it's held up. I think it's fine -- anyone desperate for Qi should just bite the bullet and solder. Charging speed is similar to really any other Qi-charged device.

Sorry my response is so late!
It's the USB type. I un-soldered the USB ribbon and soldered a wire for the two connections.
So you would want to buy the USB version, I think.

Look into copper tape. I attempted this a little while back but I think my charging pad wasn't powerful enough. What charging pad are you using?

wireless charging solution thread

As we all know, the new Zenfone 2 is missing wireless charging capabilities, however there are multiple solutions to enable wireless charging on basically any phone.

It is a cover with a Qi receiver built in, which connects to the charging port and it also provides an independent micro usb port as a part of the case.
The absence of wireless charging in Zenfone 2 is a deal breaker for me ( don't judge) and as soon as an appropriate case is available, I'll get it and the phone as well.
Please post your findings here.

Would love to use wireless charging but using a cover like the one posted is out of question.
I love the slim form and feel of this phone. so i will have to live without QI and other solutions.

This will occupy the mUSB port but would probably be the best current solution.

That's pretty cool. I like wireless charging because I'd rather not wear out my micro usb...but that setup kinda marries you to wireless charging all the time. I'd have to rig up wireless charging in the car and at work...not just at home. You use something like that?

That's pretty cool. I like wireless charging because I'd rather not wear out my micro usb...but that setup kinda marries you to wireless charging all the time. I'd have to rig up wireless charging in the car and at work...not just at home. You use something like that?

Not sure if I'm going to stick with the ZF2, so I haven't gone out and done all that yet but qi adapters are pretty cheap now for both home and car. How effective some of the car ones are though are another story. iOttie has two models out now that look promising for the car.
There may also be the possibility of placing those adapters into a separate case just meant for wireless charging... remove the case if you need the mUSB port.]
Or... if they do release new back covers... get one that you install the qi adapter in and then one that you won't have the qi adapter in.

You could solder the DigiYes posted earlier (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HI8JYFE) onto the usb board. Or you could probably just jam the wires into the connector for a non-permanent solution. The pictures of the DigiYes are a little conflicting, but if it does have leads for the data pins, you'd be best off omitting them (you'll be limited to 500ma qi charging).
This is of course assuming there's enough space to wedge the DigiYes between the back cover and phone.

Which goes back to my point. Why did Asus purposdely omit to include QI/wireless charging pins on the back? It would had cost them hardly anything extra at all, and users could just have changed back cover to get wireless charging...

I bought that model. I have a Qi charger (used with a Nexus 5) hooked up to a 2A USB Adapter, and it barely charges the Zenfone. I do not recommend. Maybe a 2A receiver would work better.

It's ridiculous.... why did asus decide not to offer a wireless charging solution similar to the previous samsung galaxies/lg.
Have the pins for charging on the back, and let the user change the case to a qi receiver case or add a qi receiver pad inside. this is honestly the only thing that disappoints on this phone (((((((((((((

I just received mine and there is enough space in the back cover for the receiver to fit in, albeit with a small bulge. It does show my phone as charging even when just held up to my Moto 360 cradle; whether or not it's charging, however, I have no idea.

Thanks for trying. Did you actually solder or just plug it in the usb port? If you plugged it in the usb port, does the cover close without damaging the cable?
I'm asking because if that works, we could potentially design a slightly thicker but hollow back case that could hold NFC and the wireless receive without unnatural bulges.

It closes fine but there is a bulge and the cover is left slightly open.

Yeah I judge, wireless charging its just another feature. A small battery, a slow processor or low memory now that's a real deal-breaker since your phone wont last a day, apps will run like hell and you will always have to micromanage just for things to run properly.
I'm way more pissed off at this phone not having a removable battery, not just because its a real deal-breaker during travel where I will be forced to lug around one of those brickish power banks but because Li-ION batteries have the lifespan of a mosquito. I already had 2 phones like that and the result was always a massive pain in the ass to deal with.
I rather buy a case with an extra battery than this thing

Three pins USB Board?

Maybe some one knows, what are those three pins on the USB board, that are accessible without disassembly phone?? That should be connectors to charging instead of usb socket?

I have a qi charger built into my car. I do not like aftermarket charger added to the phone. So this is a deal breaker for me and will not consider any phones without buildin qi charger.

Looking to buy this phone and own a quick charging card like this. Is it possible to slip the card under the back cover (without a case) or will it cause it to bulge in too unsightly a manner?

It can but causes a gap near the usb port that I could not close. I would've run it inside if it didn't do that.
