Ive been searching alot but only find a thread of htc phone with similar issue.
Whenever I watch movies in chrome and try to adjust volume with the hardware volume buttons, nothing happens. Its like they are totally ignored.
If I launch the youtube app or bsplayer etc then the hardware volume buttons work without problem. Tried same thing on a nexus 4 in chrome and there it works so there is obs some issue with sonys fw or w/e issue it is.
Is it only me or do others have this problem too?

I'm having an issue while using Google's Play Music player with a bluetooth speaker where the volume jumps significantly when the player changes to the next track on the album/playlist/queue. Pressing the volume rocker up or down once brings the volume back down to the same level as before and the volume bar shows that the volume setting has not moved other than the one notch up or down corresponding with the button press. I've recreated it many times, including after clearing data, force-closing the app, and rebooting the phone.
It's not an issue with any other media player on my phone (Poweramp, Netflix, MX Player, etc.). Unfortunately, Google searches and XDA searches about the issue come up with a lot of unrelated results thanks to Google's generic name for the music player and the numerous unrelated issues people seem to have with bluetooth volumes across various apps.
Any ideas of what might be going on here?
Nothing happens when I press the play/pause button, or the skip to next track, or the skip to previous track button. I tried this with Winamp playing in the foreground. I'm not sure if this is possible with Winamp. So I also tried it with MortPlayer Music which is what I have used previously and I know it supports this feature. But still nothing. Usually Mort will start playing as soon as I press the play button on the remote, even when it's not in the foreground or not even launched. But now... just silence.
I have SuperNova ROM with Data2SD and Android 2.3.3. I have S-OFF, root, and stock HBOOT.
Is there some service or process missing? Or not running in the background? What else could it be?
Just for clarification, the headset is working, I mean I can hear the music, it's just that there is no way to use the buttons to control it (except through the app).
Edit:
Also, is there something like a menu option or control panel, some means of controlling which app gets to use the headset buttons? Or a way of setting which app is the default music player? Or which one is the default browser for instance? Is this possible in Android? Some centralized place where you can set all of these things, a little bit like Windows style?
not tried it myself, but does this app work? it's a trial, so you can see if it works, and have to pay later. or might be other apps which are free and work, have a browse
(as an aside some roms allow long pressing of volume buttons to skip tracks, but i believe this has to be the stock music app, and probably has to be on the system partition)
Jack is the culprit!
I have found the culprit. It's my headset jack! You can check out the picture below.
I think some leads have broken inside the sleeve at the jack. That's why it bulges out like that, you can see that it's a little thick at that point. If I press and hold the cable at this point the remote control buttons work again, more or less, it glitches sometimes. If I let go it stops working, or it works sometimes if I move the cable around like when having the phone in a pocket.
For the record, this is the original HTC headset, I think it's RC-E160. The earbuds are still working though. So it's pretty much just a headphone right now. I haven't used it very much because, almost nothing at all, because of the poor sound quality. I started using it only like three months ago as as a temporary replacement when my Sony got broken. Now these are broken too. My Sony lasted much longer.
I still wonder how you can control which app gets priority and things like that, when you have like two or three different apps that respond to headset buttons. Is there no option in Android from where you can control this? Is your only option to uninstall the apps you don't want to be interfering? This doesn't seem well thought through.
Dont know if the title makes sense!
Trying to set this up for everyday use now, using Malaysk rom.
Installed poweramp, but noticed that if i am playing the radio, then open poweramp & play something, the radio does not stop.
I have to go back to radio app, then press back button.
Is that normal/correct or is there a way to configure this sort of thing.
Also, when pressing mode button (as configured on SWC), can you choose which apps are cycled through?
It currently goes through things like AVIN, and Video which i do not use.
Another thing (!), i've hads a couple of times when its gone to black screen and i cannot do anything about it, pressing power button just beeps, there is still power as there is illuminated buttons, but just a black screen and only a complete power down using ignition reboots and restores screen.
Think its like when the power button in the top right status bar is pressed (which i also need to disable!)
Thanks, and sorry for all the questions, keen to get this set up nicely now
Took me a bit to find this. You have to use the My Music shortcut not the power amp shortcut. Then setup PowerAmp as your default music player.

Thanks for that
Where do you set the defaults?
Could just find it in MTCmusic I think it was. Playing around with that at the moment, still not quite got things how I want then though, taking me ages this is!
Been playing around with the settings.
Come across another problem
When using Nokia here maps, I can use SWC to skip tracks playing in Poweramp, but when I skip, the Poweramp audio doesn't return until I press a volume up or down button.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
actually, its not related to navigation
Noticed it does the same even when in Poweramp app
Skipped forward a track using SWC, then no audio until volume pressed...
anyone?
Hello.
So I had a lot of experience with previous Zenfone devices but this seemed pretty awkward for me. I'll explain the issue and list all of the troubleshooting I've done so far.
Here's the problem, the headset button (I got those cords with volume and play/pause buttons). Seem to activate something else besides just pause or play music. When I press it, it pauses but at the same time audio quality changes to a "Phone line call" Quality... I have to press it a couple times more in order to rotate to the default audio quality... Sometimes it even changes the audio output, I've noticed that even with the headphones plugged in, it seems to change to speakers...
Observations/troubleshooting:
It looks like this problem happens only when the device is locked. The play/pause button behaves normally if the screen is on. During Asus cover screen does the problem too.
It definitely is not the music app (Tho I found weird that it didn't come with a built in music player, BTW Google play is more a store than a music player, so I don't use it... I've been using Black Player for a month now, it's s amazing). I tried messing with the Audio Wizard app, but no matter the settings or the mode I put it, it seems to not fix it.
I tried downloading the Headset Button Control app, it still seems to do something else besides what I assign the button to do...
This didn't happen with my zenfone 2 Z00AD... I love this phone but this issue is important for me because I live in a pretty dangerous country, so I use every tool I have in order to not show my phone outside...
Pls halp.
So not sure what exactly is the cause but one thing that sometimes will cause all audio to stop working is Google play music. Sometimes when I start playing music (device speakers, not Bluetooth or casted), the audio will stop working in a few seconds as if all volumes have been turned down but they're not. Music playback is still going. Verified that when this happens no other audio works as well.
In some cases the volume slider does nothing when adjusting (slider can be moved but no change in actual volume output level) and playback is still going and then audio is lost.
Playback control buttons in play music become unresponsive and eventual play music not responding message comes up. Closing app doesn't fix and still no audio in other apps or system. Restarting phone doesn't help either really. Only workaround I have found is to cast to Google home, play for a few seconds on there (which does work) and then disconnect and audio on device is functional again. Sometimes cast workaround works without reboot, otherwise the reboot is necessary.
Anyone dealing with this too? Things I should look into for suspect causes? Any help greatly appreciated.
Edit: now when audio stops on device, things become a bit more unresponsive throughout device and eventually the device restarts on own without the play music not responding message. Power off and restart options via power menu are unresponsive at this time too.

Hi Jason, I have the same issue. When I play music, the upper speaker stops emmiting audio and the lower one suddenly lowers its volume (but the audio is at full volume in the UI). the problem is that is random and also affect the phone app. so if this happen and someone call me I cant hear it.
do you resolve it?
let me know,
thanks

I tested in safe mode and verified it was not a hardware fault. I suspected it was something that happened when I was using substratum and applied a theme to Google play music. Factory reset was my only way to resolve.
Same issue here with my Pixel 2. I notice this behaviour after using a Bluetooth speaker, and disconnect from it. Sometime i lost Speaker and Microphone access to the phone. If i connect back to a bluetooth device, audio/mic in the bluetooth device work's fine.
I i reboot the phone, i regain access to speaker and MIC... until the next time i use a bluetooth speaker. I didn't notice this behaviour until last week. I have this pixel 2 phone for 2 month now.
