Power Saving/Performance - Xperia Z1 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys just wondering if there's any tweaks/mods/scripts that you can recommend for power saving and performance
I don't game or do anything to ram intensive so I'm fairly sure I can underclock my phone a fair bit but to what values
i'm using doomkernel and kitslim:good:
Any help or pointing in the right direction would be awesome:laugh:

Not sure you would gain that much from underclocking but what ive done is installing app ops and disabled various access to gps, wakelock etc on the different apps ive installed. Some apps can really dry your phone so I would check that first if youre after some more juice

Need educated!!!

I need educated on a few things, I'm concerned with the performance of my phone so I have it rooted and I have installed system panel to monitor things, autokill memory optimizer for ram of course as well as watchdog to alert me if any apps are outta control. Am I crazy for having these or is it a good idea? Also is there anything better I should use rather then what I already have? I just want my phone to run smooth and my battery to last bc I use my phone all day long

A lot of that is unneeded. I have System Panel, but only use it if I'm having problems with an app. Rarely is there a use for watchdog. On stable ROMs, I've never seen an app get out of control, and rarely on betas. So it justs sits in the background eating battery itself. Also try, using a stock speed, undervolted battery with SetCPU. If I'm trying to make mine last, I have a screen off profile of powersave 384/245, and regular of 700-800ish (I forget)/245 conservative.

ok thanks, i installed setcpu and have two profiles set, one for when screen is off with settings similar to yours and another set to when my battery is >30%. could you please tell me what the governor options of on demand, userspace, or performance mean ?? also should i set priority's to anything other then the default 50 % ? thanks for the help

A few questions from a noob!!

I have a couple of questions on my rooted Evo.... I rooted my wifes Evo and my Evo using the newest unrevoked. After rooting I flashed Myns warm 2.2 rom along with kingx kernel# 9... I also flashed the collins ph battery tweak.. The first couple of days we had phenomenal battery life, as well as the phones being fast as hell... My question is now the phones seem to be running at a very high cpu usage percentage I.e. anywhere from 60-99% cpu usage.. Is this normal?? The battery life is also terrible now, and I haven't changed anything since flashing the rom and kernel. I was using set cpu and after doing some research I found out that set cpu interferes with the battery tweak so I uninstalled.... What should the normal cpu percentage be at?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Thank you in advance!!

use a task killer such as "advanced task killer" to kill unwanted apps that run in the background. also, i have setcpu set to over 1GHZ max and 576MHz minimun and honestly, i cannot tell if it makes a difference in battery life, alot of these things you will have to find out for your own because each phone is a little bit different for each user...
there are a few things that can cause this. it is likely one of the apps you have installed is staying on or you have a run away process. The sue of task killers is debated as being a good idea or not i will let you make your own choice on that but i will say the task killer wont fix the problem it will just try to cover it up.
The problem is that the true fix will probably take some time and find and correct. If it is and app one tool that may help is the paid version of system panel. it will help monitor which apps use the most cpu/battery time and it shows you all running apps. you can also use system panel to kill your apps manually (by pressing the kill all button or killing each individually). I have used it help trouble shoot and monitor my battery etc and it has been helpful to me however i will say it doesnt always provide enough information to help you figure out what app is causing the problem when that happens i usually assume its a system process causing the issue.
as for normal it i going to very greatly depending on the apps you have running. when just sitting here watching it mine is normally 8-15% and occasionally goes as high as 20.
Thank you guys... that system panel is awesome!!

Do we need SetCPU apps when we have CM 7.0.3 Stable ?

I am a newbie on rooted phones. Just rooted the phone to CM7.0.3 Stable and found out that we have a setting to change the Govenors, currently set using SMARTASS with 245/729.
One question, is it nessesary to install apps such as Setcpu to overclock? or it is just adequet to use the setting in CM7 ? Will both conflict each other? Many thanks
Its useful I think, because you can setup CPU speeds for certain things, such as when your screen is off or when the battery drops below a certain threshold.

depends on you need dude. playing games/ watching videos/ hearing music/ simple phone usage/ battery conservation etc. stock one dont have profiles. but 3rd party like set cpu have it. so that it auto switches profiles according to ur present phone status.

SetCPU is much more useful than the cyanogenmod CPU functions, I did use the cyanogenmod one but I didn't see any changes

yes, the good things are the profiles! but I'm not sure if underclocking the processor really saves battery since i've heard that its just a saying/placebo

Yeah I think your right, strangely enough I think it's the same with overclocking, I put mine up to 700ish MHz and the battery still lasts just as long, I expected a reduction in battery life!

Improve battery life?

How can I improve the battery life of my play with rooting? I don't want apps that kill every background app though as I may want to go back but it would be killed

Assuming you're on a stock rom theres a couple things you can do. The easiest would be to root and use Titanium Backup to either freeze or remove the bloatware from your phone as it runs in the background and causes drain. Another would be to look into using some of the tweaks found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1227269
Another option is to try running different firmwares, personally I found the older ones to give me better battery life while others found the oppisite to be true, so try a few till you find one that suits you. A more extreme approach which will yeild far better results is to unlock your bootloader allowing custom ROMs and kernels. With custom kernels you can over and underclock your phone while choosing more effecient governers (like the smartass governer). You can also undervolt your phone which will probably lead to the biggest saving. Custom ROMs can also increase or reduce your battery life, again, try a few. Personally I run at 1.5ghz on smartass, undervolted as much as possible with version 7.1.0.1 of CM7 and have great battery life. Also keep in mind the obvious tweaks such as turning off wifi, gps, 3g, brightness, etc to prolong battery life.
-EDIT- Also on older firmwares there was a problem with using "Automatic" under time and date where it would cause a lot of battery drain so you may want to turn this off if you think it might be a problem
Thanks, but I'd rather not root my phone yet. Thanks anyways

I would say update to .62 firmware it should be up for all around the world yesterday i updated my arc s to it.I was setting up the phone after (flash before the update) and i had to set up everything again and my battery is still on 70% from yesterday (im talking downloading apps, connectin accs and stuff, like 3-4h of usage and around 8h on idle while i was sleeping). My phone isnt rooted and its with stock rom and stuff
I use juice defender ultimate. It allows me to easily get a days usage out of my phone when before i barely got a day

[Q] Overclock with SetCPU

Hi,
Would anyone be kind enough to list a step-by-step process on how to overclock the Note 8.0 using SetCPU? I'm a new user of this app and I'm afraid I may end up doing some irreparable damage to the device.
I am also just curious to see if I can squeeze some more gaming juice from the Note 8.0.
thanks in advance.

I was going to post a link to a setCPU guide, but its no longer available
Id only push the CPU a little. In order to gain real gaming perfomance increases you need to push the GPU, but in order to do that you will need a kernel that supports it.
I only received my tablet last night and wont be rooting it until the weekend so cant say what settings ill be using yet. my aim is to attempt to overclock slightly and undervolt where I can...
You're not going to break it with SetCPU. If you overclock too much, the system will become unstable, then just back off. Also, the system will shut itself off well before any temperature possible of causing permanent damage was reached.
SetCPU has an option to create a recovery-flashable zip file, which resets the CPU settings to default. I would absolutely take this precaution, as I've had to resort to it on my old HTC Flyer tablet (became unstable, and bootlooped). As long as you select this option, you're pretty safe.
Other than that, just follow the basic rule of overclocking any computer, and push the clock up one or 2 increments at a time, then test for a few hours to see if the tablet is stable under various usage conditions. Repeat until you've either reached a desirable clock speed, or encounter instabilities.
Also, as you may already be aware, higher than "stock" CPU clock steps are normally not available unless you flash a custom kernel.
The trickster app supports GPU overclock on Civato's kernel.
If you're looking to push the GPU that's the way to go.
Thanks for the valuable inputs to all.

Does the Trickster app allow for senario clock settings. Ie. underclock the CPU on screen off or if battery is bellow a certain percentage?
I may have to switch from setCPU to it if it has the same settings and more...
