I have an AT&T I747, and tried to install the OTA update to 4.4.2. After completing & rebooting, the phone got stuck on the white AT&T screen. I flashed stock 4.3 back onto the device, but now have no phone/mobile networks, and the IMEI & Baseband show as "Unknown". I do have Wifi. I've seen some similar issues on the forums but nothing exact - tried flashing the MJB modem (flashed fine, but no change), and tried flashing the MJB modem & bootloader (get "assert failed" followed by several getprop commands). After a couple of days chasing this, thought I should ask rather than keep stumbling & possibly making things worse. Anyone have any advice?
I was rooted but otherwise stock when I tried to do the OTA update.
I'm using TWRP 2.6.3.1 to flash, ODIN 3.07, and the files I flashed were (from links found in this forum):
4.3: I747UCUEMJB_2024954_REV04_user_low_ship.tar.md5
MJB modem: d2att_I747UCUEMJB_modem.zip
MJB modem & bootloader: d2att_I747UCUEMJB_modem.zip
Any help greatly appreciated.
Try flashing a 4.4.2 touchwiz rom and factory resetting.
DO NOT try to flash the 4.3 bootloader or firmware! You are lucky it didn't flash or you'd now be hard bricked! The MJB modem may not work on the NE4 firmware, so make sure you have that modem.

Thanks for the advice! So would you recommend flashing 4.4.2 first, and then an NE4 modem if I don't have it, or reverse that order?

which ROM and files did you flash? in what order? I'm in the same boat. It works in 4.3 with "Baseband Unknown". However, If I try to update to 4.4.2 , the phone will freeze after "Samsung" logo.
What firmware are you on?
Install terminal emulator and enter this:
getprop ro.bootloader
If it returns NE4, that's the modem you need. If it returns MJB or MJ2, do not flash the NE4 modem or it'll hard brick. Basically, you should use whatever modem matches the firmware/bootloader version you currently are running.

Was at stock 4.3 . Received OTA update and froze in the middle of updating.
I used this to get back to stock 4.3 I747UCUEMJB_2024954_REV04_user_low_ship.tar.md5
Everything works , but Baseband Unknown. If flashed NE4 modem, Baseband is back and phone working again, but can't turn on Wifi.

Ok, this is what happens with wifi....
4.3 firmware with 4.4.2 rom = no wifi
4.4.2 firmware with a 4.3 rom = no wifi
In both cases you need a custom kernel. Since you are updated to 4.4.2 firmware, if you want to use a 4.3 rom, you will have to flash either the MJ2 or kt747 kernel for wifi to work. The NE4 modem is the only modem you can use now.
Your boot hangs will be solved by factory resetting. I doubt there's any way around this at this point.
I suggest flashing the NE4 stock rom from enewman17. Then factory reset. It should reboot and work fine now.

Thx for the tips. Will try soon.
However, once the phone froze after Samsung logo, I could not access custom recovery anymore. In the case of stock recovery, I could get back to it but there were no point. Phone still froze after Wipe.
Try refreshing your recovery with Odin. Try rebooting recovery again. Then try to factory reset before flashing the rom, and again afterwards.
Good luck and let me know how it goes!

After 5 hours working on this phone, I think I'm happy which what I have now.
1- Restored back to stock 4.3
2- Flash custom recovery
3- Flash NE4 modem
4- Flash ktoonsez kernel Touchwiz JELLYBEAN 4.3 VERSIONS
Everything is working now. I will not update this to 4.4.2 b/c no matter which ways I used to go to 4.4.2 either through custom or stock recovery, phone would freeze after Samsung logo ( already did factory reset before and after flashing ROM/update)
Thx for your help.

Hello, I recently just updated my Rogers SGH-i317M to 4.3, which then downloaded a system update which put it at 4.4. I was running Jedi X20, which is based on 4.1.2, when I first tried updating, I flashed the "4.3param_tz" file in odin, and was left with an error screen saying I need to recover using Kies, so I downloaded the official release, flashed via odin, and thats how I got to where I am now. I want to try the "Ditto Note 3" rom, "Sky Note Air 4.3", "Mean Bean" and "Beanstalk". My main question is, can I just start flashing these roms like I was before on 4.1.2, or do I need to use the specific kernel listed on their page? Before you needed a specific kernel to run a touchwiz rom or an aosp rom, so is it still the same? Or can I use my stock 4.4 kernel and try both aosp and tw roms now? If so could you point out the kernels I would need? And educate me on anything else I should know about before flashing 4.3 and 4.4 roms, (I'm not worried about warranty), this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time in reading this and helping me out, much appreciated!!
Regardless of where u are, I'd Odin to Rogers stock KK 4.4.2. Then Odin Twrp recovery, boot into twrp recovery and flash SU v.1.99. Finally choose your rom and flash away. This way you are on the lastest KK 4.4.2 Bootloader and KK Modem/Baseband.

I did all that except flash SU 1.99, so I tried flashing SKynote Air and it didnt work, upon restarting my phone it said no os is available. So I tried restoring from the backup I made of the official 4.4.2 Samsung rom in twrp, didn't work. Tried Odin, didn't work. Then I tried flashing the Skynote rom again and it worked. So I'm afraid of flashing any other roms now.
I originally rooted 4.3 & was working great. When 4.4 update came out, I re loaded stock 4.3 & then OTA update. Long story short, want to go back to rooted 4.3 so I re loaded stock 4.3 & now S3 has no IMEI & SIM is not recognizable. Tried other ROM but get errors installing. I'm really hurting here so any help will be greatly appreciated. This is what my phone looks like - (1 pic is in Development Mode).
Looks like you need to reflash the ne4 modem, since the ota gave you ne4 bootloader and downgrading to 4.3 rom probably trashed the modem...

Quick question - The link here says a warning about not flashing ne4 on 4.3 firmware, just want to know if this is correct because I'm on 4.3 JB? Also, could I just load a modded 4.4.4 ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2728553 ) on before I flash the n4 or after I flash the n4?
Thanks
Yes it is correct. Several bricks have already occurred due to ending up with the 4.4.2 modem on 4.3 firmware. Looks like the rom you are using is 4.3, but this may not also be your base firmware build. Install and open terminal emulator and enter this:
getprop ro.bootloader
It will tell you what firmware you have. If it is not NE4, do not flash that modem. Instead flash whatever modem matches the version the above command said you have. So if it said you have MJB firmware, flash the MJB modem.
If that doesn't help, the next thing to try is flashing the full 4.3 firmware package via Odin and factory reset. (Make sure you backup everything prior to this! Including your internal sd).
Note: if getprop ro.bootloader says you are on NE4 firmware, do not try to flash the 4.3 firmware over it. If already on NE4, then flash the modem linked previously.

You saved my phone! A whole week trying TONS of things and I just found your post by chance and that was the problem.
Thanks a million.
I had signal loss (from battery screen) at regular intervals.
To overcome, I wanted to go stock thru odin and then flash back. After odin, It boots up. but no IMEI
tried couple of times. What are my choices to restore phone to normal. I am hoping it is not brick, as phone boots up and can connect to wi-fi. Just no AT&T recognized as status page is all unknown entries (phone number/IMEI/baseband...)

How did you flash back to stock 4.3 when you have the 4.4 bootloader?
That would've bricked had it been successful.
Verify you are on NE4 by entering this in terminal emulator:
getprop ro.bootloader
If you are on NE4, go to my 4.4.2 modem thread in General section and flash the NE4 modem. That will probably solve your problem. If it doesn't, PM me and I'll help with the imei restore.

My ATT SGH-i747 was rooted and running 4.4.2 until an OTA this past weekend soft-bricked the phone. Phone would boot to a blank screen but still allowed access to download and recovery modes, thankfully.
With help from this awesome forum, and a stock 4.3 flash via ODIN, thanks to enewman17's epic efforts and thread , the phone is back, but now won't recognize the SIM - and baseband version is "unknown" - I suspect I need to now go up to 4.4.2 to get the hw recognized by the sw. Went to ATT and they put a new SIM in but to no avail
CWM recovery is gone, but I can reload that easily enough...
Do I need to just flash the modem, or is the bootloader involved too?
Is there a single flash or .zip that will get the ROM (incl CSC and Modem) up to 4.4.2 in one shot?
I never really wanted to go this deep but here I am so now I'm looking for advice or direction as there are so many directions to look... thanks in advance!
Mismatch in firmware
Digging deeper, using Phone Info *Samsung*, I have noted the following
bootloader version: I747UCUFNJ1
baseband version: <blank>
pda version: I747UCUEMJB
csc version: I747ATTEMJB
skip a bit...
modem version: <blank>
hardware revision: <blank>
mobile operator name: <blank>
mobile network code: <blank>
So it would seem I have a mis-match of versions, where it seems all should be the same..
Would it be safe to flash to MJB following this thread?

Your modem (baseband) appears to have been compromised in the process of downgrading from Kitkat. You could try either of the following solutions...
1) Flash the UCUEMJB modem via custom recovery to return you to complete stock 4.3. You can see the modem file here ....
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23269279319197285
2) Do a complete stock restore to 4.4.2. You can find the stock update zip via the following thread ...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3-att/general/ucuemjb-to-ucufne4-firmware-update-t2808654
If you can reflash the 4.3MJB modem, you can check to see if you can get an OTA update to 4.4.2. Using Option 2 requires you to be on complete stock 4.3 so this may not work if you currently don't have the baseband/modem. I would strongly advise you stick to the custom recovery flashable files for now and avoid Odin. You would, however, need to restore custom recovery via Odin.
Hope this works for you.

So I guess my plan of actions will be
1) re-install custom recovery w CWM to my external SD card as was previous
-do I *need* later version of CWM? Previous one of mine was 6.0.2.3, IIRC, that is what I can easily flash back to the phone
2) install .zip (from https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23269279319197285) via CWM
If that doesn't work, I was interested in the S3Rx ROM vs. a stock 4.4.2 ROM - is there any way to go straight to a custom 4.4.2 ROM or should I get the modem working in 4.3 first?
Lastly, Where can I find a later version of a CW Recovery Touch .tar to flash via ODIN? (third stoopid noob question in this post, I know...)

You aren't the first to have this issue. This is why I am still on NE4 and did not take the OTA to NJ1. The update is pointless anyway, all it does is patch the kernel so towelroot won't work anymore aside from updating the bootloader.
Since your bootloader is NJ1, that is your firmware which cannot be downgraded. If you try, you will brick. You have to work with NJ1 files here only. Sure you can flash older modems, but stick to NJ1. I suggest using ODIN to flash a custom recovery, then use enewman17's NJ1 .zip file in said recovery to reflash all the NJ1 stuff. Then do a complete factory reset. You might need to flash stock recovery to do the hard factory data reset, as I am not sure if it can be done in CWM or TWRP.
In the future, I suggest freezing the update and not upgrading until people on here do it and report how it's working or rather not working in this case.

i have the s3 att on a 4.4.4 CROM. the baseband says ...LK3. can i use any guide using odin to go back to 4.1.1 stock unrooted and then use OTA updates to get the latest baseband/bootloader/modem? just want to make sure before i do it. i hear this is the safest way and i want to make sure i have met the requirements before i do it so i dont end up having a brick! (not sure if it matters but i have never used OTA updates before)
thanks in advance.
Is your bootloader also the lk3? If the modem and bootloader are lk3, you can use Odin to flash back to stock using firmware from sammobile.com.
Ok, I'm on a similar boat. I tried several AOSP based ROMs, and while I like most of them a lot more than stock touchwiz, they all present the same problems:
- Camera stops working sometimes and I have to reboot device;
- Camera won't record videos in 1080p, even when it's selected in the settings;
- Cannot make video calls on Skype longer than 5 seconds before the call drops;
- Disconnecting a bluetooth media device while music is streaming causes sounds to stop working;
- Tap to pay doesn't work at all;
So because of these problems, I want to go back to stock . My phone is the AT&T version. Currently I'm running Carbon Rom with KitKat 444. The baseband version is I747UCUFNJ1. The latest version of the stock ROM available on sammobile is:
Version: Android 4.1.1
PDA: I747UCDLK3
CSC: I747ATTDLK3
MODEM: I747UCDLK3
Would I be able to revert my phone back to stock with Odin? If not, what would I have to do to revert? Am I stuck with custom ROMs?
I'm pretty new to this so I'd appreciate anybody's help.
If your bootloader and modem is the lk3, you should be able to Odin back to stock 4.1.1.
Ok, how do I find out if they are? And if they are not, do I have any other options?

I have tried CM11 and Carbon ROM, which is CM based, both have all the same problems. I haven't tried TW-based ROMS. Do you have any suggestions?
What do you mean by the phone shuts down? Did you try copying the ROM to a microSD card?
Did you notice any bootloader or modem files in the S3Rx 4.0 (11-9-14) ROM? It may not include a modem or bootloader. In step 1 of the flash process, it says "AT&T I747 users should update bootloaders and modem to NE4 http://forum.xda-developers.com/gala...pdate-t2808654 I747M and T999 users need to be on 4.3 firmware or ROM will not boot.
I reboot the phone in ClockWorkMod recovery. Then I go to the command prompt and type:
Code:
adb push S3Rx_UCUFNE4_AROMA_11-9-14.zip /sdcard/
It starts pushing the file to the phone, but after a while, the phone screen goes black, and I get a "Protocol failure" on the command prompt. After this the power button no longer works, I have to do a battery pull for the phone to work again. The phone has 10 GB of storage left so it didn't run out of space. The USB chord is brand new so I don't think it's that either. It worked fine before when I pushed other smaller roms.
In another question, would this process allow me to downgrade the modem and restore stock rom?

i am pretty sure that since youre on MJ1 , your bootloader and modem have to match.

Did you try flashing the card from an external microSD card?
AT&T never released a stock ROM for the i747 beyond 4.1.1 afaik; therefore, you cannot get back to stock unless you flash an OTA ROM that has been compiled for flashing in Odin.
I do not recommend mixing and matching bootloaders and modems as a mismatch may result in a hard brick.
Downgrading only the modem will not allow you to flash back to stock.

I haven't tried flashing from external microSD card as I don't have one.

So you're basically telling me I'm stuck with custom roms unless I find a 4.4.2 OTA ROM I can flash with Odin (which doesn't appear to exist)?

Would it be safe to try this:

Even though I'm on I747UCUFNJ1 and not on I747UCUFNE4?
Once you upgrade to the 4.3 or newer bootloader on the i747, you are stuck with either custom ROMs or OTA ROMs that have been compiled for flashing in Odin or CWM/TWRP.
You can try flashing the NE4 ROM because it doesn't appear to include a bootloader or modem. The first post says "Prerequisites include a minimum of a 4.3 bootloader and modem.
If you are not on the official 4.4.2 bootloaders and modem then you will need to flash ktoonsez kernel."
Thanks audit13 and mrrocketdog for all the help. I was able to get the AROMA rom installed on the phone. All functionalities lost with AOSP ROMs are back working so that's a plus. Still can't get updates OTA updates but this phone is probably not gonna have any new ones. Still hopeful that lolipop based AOSP ROMs fix the problems I had, but I'm not holding my breath.
