[Q] Playing 1080p content - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I am thinking about replacing my old media player with something more powerful. Ideally, I want to be able to play AVC, VC1 and MPEG-2 encoded video files (1080p) with AC3, DTS, DTS-MA, FLAC and TrueHD audio tracks without any slow downs. If I am not mistaken, Fire TV supports neither hardware decoding of VC1 nor DTS-MA and TrueHD passthrough. So, my questions are the following:
1. Shouldn't a quad core CPU combined with the Adreno 320 GPU be able to play VC1 content without stuttering even if there is no hardware decoding? If so, could a future update to XBMC/VLC/{insert player name} fix this?
2. Is there a chance that a custom rom will be developed for Fire TV which will allow the core tracks of DTS-MA and TrueHD (i.e. DTS and AC3) to be passed through instead of stereo?
If the answer to #1 and #2 is "No", then could you please suggest a decent media player that can run XBMC and plays all 1080p content without a hitch? I've looked into the latest Amlogic based devices such as Minix Neo X8 and Tronsmart Vega S89, but they too seem to have issues with playing some high definition content (I am not sure whether it is the fault of hardware or software).
Thank you

Is there solution to the problem with films of HTC HD?

Ultimately, what is the best video player for the HTC HD now?
Problem as the phone was out that the core player play good films, but does not support all audio codecs (it is a film without sound) and does not support subtitles.
Free version of TCPMP do play all movies whit sound and subtitles, but movies go very slowly rather than smooth.
So my question is, since my information is from 4-5 months before, are there any new development on the subject. Is there a player who goes smoothly converted video and subtitles supported?
If there is such a miracle, I'll be happy to drop a link?
What is the latest version of core player and are solved the problems there?
Latest version was 1.3 I reckon. They plan on introducing AC3 audio codec support which is the most widely used audio codec for ripped movies etc in a 1.5.x version.
But yeah, Coreplayer is at the moment still the most top notch player imo.
This is a list of the supported audio and video codecs:
Audio : MP3, MP2, AAC, MKA, WMA, Midi*, WAV, OGG, Speex, WAVPACK, TTA, FLAC, MPC, AMR, ADPCM, ALaw, MuLaw, G.729, GSM
Video: H.264 (AVC), AVCHD, MKV, MPEG-1, MPEG-4 part 2 (ASP), DivX, XviD, WMV*, Theora*, Dirac*, MJPEG, MSVIDEO1
Another Coreplayer user here!
Works great for me.

It all depends how you encode the video files... I can play a whole movie without any lag.
yes, but I want to play unconverted video..
The main reason why I use coreplayer is because it can play unconverted video, I have too much video to even be coverted and it's generally just too much of a hassle to me. You can't watch a 4.7 gig dvd unconverted if that's what you mean but dvd ripped avi filea from like 700 mb play without any lag at all using coreplayer.

Is H.264 supported or not?

I installed coreplayer on my AT&T Tilt2, and it says, for a video I want to play, that AVC aka H.264 is not supported by the player. I have seen sites that say it is, and it isn't supported. What is the story, and is there any way to have coreplayer play this video or do I have to convert it?
thanks!
as far as i know all usa phones support h.264 streaming but as for the playback you'll need to use a new media player (try vplayer).
There are several different profiles of H.264. The hardware only supports Baseline profile, many sites are using Main or High profile for their streams. Hardware acceleration won't work for those, and the CPU is too slow to play them back reasonably without acceleration.

Kindle Fire Hardware Video Decoding Mode

I just wonder why Archos G9 supports all multimedia formats with the same processor as our Kindle Fire.
We can watch MP4 video without any problems up to 1080p.
MKV format can not work in HW mode.
I think the problem is due to lack of video codecs in the Kindle Fire.
Anybody can pull them out of the firmware Archos G9?
no one interested in this?
The issue isn't the codecs. The issue is the HW decoder. I can play 1080p video on my KF ICS with MX Video Player, using the software decoder.
You can, but with horrible lags and 5-10 fps right?
I like this idea. Why not try it out, we've got nothing to lose. Maybe kindly ask in the Archos forum for someone to upload them?
this is not so easy... we need developers help.

You asked around in the Archos threads? What did they say?
Doesn't the G9s use the 4460 instead of the 4430? If so it's no wonder the hardware decoding is different.
*Wait, seems IVA3 can decode 1080p for both...difference is only in 3D...might look at this later.
What's the difference between the TI OMAP 4430 and TI OMAP 4460? Both the processor hardware can play 1080p. Yesterday I tried mp4 file with a resolution of 1920x1080 - he played without any lag.
The only difference is that the 4460 processor can play back 3D video in 1080p, and 4430 only 720. This is the only difference between these processors.
Archos specifically sold its codecs to support AC3 audio. Arcos independently developed codecs for their devices.
I tried to find firmware for the Archos G9, but I found it to extract the parts I could not, that would see what files are responsible for what codecs ..
We just need to find a way to add these same codecs for mkv. The hardware can play our processor such files.
After all, even the Chinese tablets are capable of playing 2160p in mkv format, so what our device worse than they?
Correct me if i am wrong but if i am not mistaken the videos canbplay back in software mode. That would imply that decoders are in place but the hardware decoder isn't working yet. The ICS build for the KF is still under development ... just wait till there is a actual beta build if you need video playback. If you have been following any other CM9 alpha builds you would see that gpu decoding has been a large hurdle but they have been making a lot of progress. ICS on KF just got sound and YouTube playback within the last week. Jackpotcalvin has made a lot of progress on the KF but he is going through some personal life problems ... I'm sure when he has more time that he will get ICS's video playback working. In the mean time use cm7 with the ice cream sandwich theme for cm7. ADW EX launcher runs great and has some pleasant themes that look great on cm7. Also add an ICS tag to the thread topic.

so you think that Android 4.0 will support more formats than MP4?
1080p - with ease ;P
lack of codecs guys?! - try to use MX video player (commercial ver.) or Mobo player (freeware & support additional codecs as XVID etc)
Are you serious or what?
These players can play avi Divx, Xvid only in software mode, with terrible lags at 1080p. Unpleasant to look even 720p. While the battery is still wildly discharged.

this is in HW mode, but also video in SW mode KF plays with good speed! it depends only on the player for now.
I tested on video with:
Codec ID: XVID
Bit rate: 4 089 Kbps
Width: 1 920 pixels
Height: 1 080 pixels
Scan type: Progressive
at present, players so far from perfection ;p
We really need BSPlayer or DicePlayer support... This players can play 1080 HD mkv video by hardware decoder. But for now both players don't work on Kindle Fire.
Please don't take this the wrong way (some get defensive when things about their device are questioned) but what's the point of having 1080p video playback on a display that can't even do 720p and on a device that has no video output? I just always wondered what the fascination was, because a 1024x600 video is going to look the same as that 1080p video on a 1024x600 display.

the advantage is that you don't have to re-encode your existing video data...
Once someone implements a USB host it might be useful, but as it is now with a limited screen and limited storage I don't think this is a priority for much people. A 720p, or even 420p video should be more interesting for now.
Hello,
Can't we just spoof an omap 4430 device that has HW video decoding in BsPlayer/DicePlayer? Does anyone know how to do this?
I know for example that Galaxy Nexus has omap 4460 and that is very very similar regarding hw video decoding to kindle fire and it is supported by DicePlayer.
Any thoughts?
The Archos G9 standard has a 4430 and the turbo has a 4460. Our resident dev for the Archs is surdu_petru.

[Q] Is it possible to use H/W decoding to watch *.mkv in nexus 7(2013)

Yes. My sat-box records in .mkv and it is viewable (streamed from sat-box) without changing anything. I use vplayer.
I use diceplayer, works great.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
MX Player with custom codec.

+1. You can even boost the volume level to upto 30 if you use HW+ decoding, works amazing on AC3/DTS audio
serviio and diceplayer. Makes a great DNLC network that can stream any file to your Nexus. As for playing it on the nexus, I personally dont like putting movie files on mine since the memory gets used up rather quickly.
MX Player and the VLC Beta both work fine with .mkvs for me. I've even played some pretty hefty 1080p files with no issues.
you don't need to do anything. just open the file with MX player, be player or similar. sorry I'm not understanding why this is an issue for you
You can use HW decoding for video in players such as MX Player but you can't do audio HW decoding for some codecs since Dolby is suing everybody for supporting their formats without permission and is also refusing to license them.
MX Player works great in HW+ mode. I have had no problem with normal HD mkv files or 10 bit anime mkv

Actually you can, custom codec option in mx player Worked wonders for me, there's threads about this. Stock rom, locked.
Yes, it can for both 8-bits 720p and 1080p, but 10-bits sorry, can't....
Can anyone point me to the right codec to download? All videos I try are using S/W instead of H/W in MxPlayer (except MP4). WMV and MKV are playing in S/W. Thanks a bunch

ya, where do i download the latest HW codecs? my s/w works fine but HW mode doesnt work too well in mxplayer pro/ lags and stutters
Some education is needed
MKV is not a codec, it's a container format much like DVD .... The problem is not the MKV container but what it contains. Generally the biggest problems are MKV's made from US OTA (Over the air) and cable TV recordings which all have the audio in AC3 format and usually in Dolby encoding. (And as someone mentioned Dolby doesn't like it when they don't get their Cut, even if the software is free and no one is actually profiting from it except the Consumer)
I've recorded and archived several TV series since 2006 and some of my first MKV's kept the AC3 audio format (but converted the video to h.264) because I was having sound sync problems (Not sure if it was an x264 or the cable company's fault but the issue eventually went away) and for those I have to use software decoding for the audio but the video is still hardware accel .... The ones I've made in the last 3-4 years have the audio converted to AAC format and those have full hardware accel video and audio and play flawlessly and effortlessly even on my lowly Rockchip dual core TV Stick (720p and in the process of being embedded in a Motorola Lapdock)
Point being it's not the MKV container that is the problem, what counts is the formats it contains .... And in the case of us North Americans we need to convert the audio (AAC is the best bet IMO) so you may as well convert the video (Much of it is interlaced and that's another issue conversion fixes, Handbrakes default Decomb filter does it well) .... For that I would recommend x264 and Handbrake (x264 is included in Handbrake) which should not only take care of compatibility issues it also makes for a smaller file (Better transfer/streaming over wifi) without any loss of playback quality .... Also I would recommend stripping off any extra audio feeds (Languages) if you aren't going to use them, ditto for subtitles ... In other words keep it simple and convert to formats with known/best compatibility
SPAM.

what about the mpeg2 decode ,not h/w decode?
no hardware acceleration for 1080i dvb-s2 recordings or streams
My nexus 7 with stock Rom plays 1080p h264 content in MKV containers flawlessly with h/w acceleration with various players. Except for either streams or recordings from my tvheadend server. If they are 1080i (no German station broadcasts in 1080p) none of the players gets h/w working. SD and 720p do work though. The only difference I can see between my recorded files and the ones that do play is that the recordings have 25 fps whereas the other mkvs have about 24.
In the attachments there are two screenshots of two mkvs' properties. The 25 fps one is the one that won't work.
Anyone's got an idea? Thanks
from what i know,snapdragon still don't support 10bit decoding perfectly,thats why u can't use hw+ mode for 10bit video.
When I tried with my HTC One X,it can play 10bit video in hw+ mode though. Its likely for now Tegra and Exynos only support 10bit decoding in hw+ mode, even not perfectly.

[Q] 1080P MKV support without transcoding?

At $84, I'm tempted to buy one, but only if 1080p playback works flawlessly. Have the bugs finally been worked out?

It depends on the codec within it. With XBMC or SPMC, I've found my Blu-Ray rips all technically play of course, but those whose video are encoded in VC-1 don't have hardware decoding and thus don't play smoothly. Those using MPEG-2 or H.264 play perfectly. To get around that, I transcoded such BR's to H.264 at a rather high quality (and kept the originals around for if / when VC-1 hardware decoding ever gets going).
On the audio side, I have pass-through enabled along with Dolby Digital encoding enabled for XBMC's audio transcode (that second part is necessary so something like 5.1 PCM, FLAC, Dolby True HD, or DTS Master audio can reach my receiver in 5.1, since Android devices currently can't pass full-bandwidth surround audio). Hope this helps you in making your decision.
