[Q] Bootloop out of nowhere? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, all.
I have an Evo 4G that is rooted with MikG3.11, which has been an awesome and stable ROM for...2 full years now?
Anyway, I've never had any trouble, and I haven't installed or changed anything in weeks...but last night while I slept, gremlins invaded my phone and tampered with it. When I woke up (a lucky thing in itself since I use my phone for an alarm clock), my phone was hung at the android animation screen. I pulled the battery and rebooted, but it kept bootlooping...which has never happened before.
Here are the specs:
SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-2.10.0001
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMELC03_16ac
RADIO-2.15.00.11.19
Oct 15 2010, 12:07:00
I can still get into Recovery, which is ClockWorkMod v2.6.0.1.
Here are the steps I've performed/tried so far:
Performed a Nandroid backup from within CWM recovery
Successfully executed "mount USD storage" and pulled everything I could get access to from the device down to my Win7 PC
Wiped the Cache partition
Wiped the Dalvik Cache
Tried rebooting again after clearing the caches, but (as before) when it gets to the end of the boot animation, it loops rather than fully loading the ROM/presenting the unlock screen, and I have to pull the battery and start over
Unfortunately, that's about the extent of my expertise, as I'm pretty much a noob at this phone hackery business and was wondering if there's a recommended way to try to restore access to my phone without potentially losing some or all of my data. (I'm not 100% confident that the Nandroid backup is going to capture all of my contacts, calendar events, and misc app data. And it's been several months since I ran a Titanium backup from "within" the phone's OS.)
I do have adb access set up on my Win7 PC, but I didn't see anything there that was a clear "next move".
Is it possible to restore the boot or system image without touching the data? Or is a full wipe in my future?
I look forward to any advice from the experts...

This happens. You're probably just going to have to clean flash and start over. Before you do that, however, switch to a more reliable recovery (Amon_RA's, or preferably, smelkusMOD).

Agreed. While CWM is a great recovery for most Android devices, it's known to have issues on the EVO 4G. Do as Captain Throwback suggested and swap to a recovery that's Amon_Ra-based. The Smelkus recovery he's referring to is a great one and I used it on the various EVO's I once owned. It has a few extra features built in to it and you can't go wrong with it.

[Q] Really could use help my Evo is down. White Screen only.

Ok so here is what lead up to the problem. I've been running Vaelpak for a couple of months now flashing updates on it no problem and flashed updated radio ect... no problem. Today I DLed the new Flashable Radio from Caulkin. Did a nandriod backup(I know always to do this). Used the quick boot option in Vaelpak to get to my recovery then flashed the radio. After it was flashed I used the reboot option in Amon RA to restart phone and it went to white HTC evo screen, I waited a half hour and still nothing.
Since this I've tried restoring my previous nandriod back up I get an ABD Shell error saying the restore cannot be done. Tried previous back ups same problem. Oh well I thought I'll just start back over from Vaelpak 2.3 Flashed it and then restarted phone. White HTC screen for 1 hour, no go. Flashed Vaelpak 2.1, white screen, no go. I've been doing multiple system wipes, cache wipes, and Dalvik wipes in between all my flashing and attempts to restore previous back ups.
Today I've just purchased a Micro SD to usb adapter, and a new cable to USB(lost previous one) in order to try to fix this problem myself with you guys' help. Any ideas would be appreciated and I'm not afraid to try some shell commands. Please tell me I'm not bricked this would be a very inopportune time for this to happen.

Try flashing an older radio.

The restoration error might be originating from the lack of battery life in your phone, try to charge for awhile, then restore.
Well the restoring error was due to the lack of batter thank you Biofall
And I still don't see it was possible for a radio to make all my restores and reinstalls of my rom invalide but that was it.
I tried flashing the last known working combo for my phone and it didn't take but after I tried flashing the previous radio on its own and now I'm back in business. So thank you fachadick I think this is 2nd time you've help me out of a situation like this.
Thanks once again glad to see I didn't waste 35 dollars today on a cable and Micro SD reader.

The newest radio has issues with certain older kernels. Since nand backups don't backup or restore radios (except for wimax), when you restored your old backup, it was still trying to run the newest radio on the incompatible kernel. Glad it worked for you - with some hunting, you can find a kernel that will work with the new radio. I think netarchys is good.

[Q] I think I finally hosed my phone. Help

So I was running Synergy + God Mode and today my phone decided to reboot itself. Well not it keeps locking up at the htc EVO 4G white screen or sometimes will get as far as the Synergy splash screen but will just loop.
So to back up a bit I previously had moved the Dalvik cache to the sd card as well as most all apps. This has been running fine for weeks.
I was able to get it to boot once after I removed the sd card but now it won't even with that. I tried wiping the phone from recovery and still nothing.
Any ideas? this is annoying. I've never run into an issue this bad before. I've always been able to repair either with a nandroid backup or just a wipe.
I tried restoring a nandroid backup and it just sat there with the lines getting longer and longer 1 dot at a time. Actually filled the whole screen and never actually finished.
Try a RRU
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I would try an RUU.exe
Which HBOOT do you have? If you can get to HBOOT, then you should be able to go back to stock and solve most problems
I'm running the 0.76.200 HBOOT.
I will probably end up having to go back to stock but would like to keep that as a last resort.
I think I narrowed down my problem. Anytime I go into recovery and try and wipe anything that has to do with the ext3 partition it either locks up or for instance I'm now trying to repair the ext3 partition and it just keeps adding dots. Just keeps working and seems to get nowhere.
I can still access everything else on the SD card just errors of sorts when dealing with the ext partition.
well got it working after RUU but i still wish I knew what caused it in the first place

[Q] Completed Factory Reset (MIUI) and SDCard format and now soft-bricked!

Hey folks,
Thanks for taking the time to read/assist. I don't typically do these kinds of posts and am at my wit's end!
Phone's Previous Setup - MIUI Gingerbread, Rooted (but with S-ON after the fact).
What happened:
My HTC Incredible finally got to the point of being practically unuseable with laggy behavior and random restarts and the like, so I decided to complete a reset to factory settings or wipe.
I completed my backups using Titanium (apps) and ClockworkMod Recovery (full backup). After this, I went ahead and opened up Settings and directed the phone to complete a Reset to Factory Settings. It ran through the process, rebooted, and came up jelly. While no custom apps were installed (expected), my folder settings on my main home page were saved, along with some previous text messages. I was pleasantly surprised.
From here, I wished to wipe the SD Card so as to make sure it was clean of any residual folders/files that might cause conflict down the road (based on advice from others). So, headed to the SD card part of the settings. Had to unmount the SD card to format, proceeded to do so.
Here's where things went wonky: Despite receiving a confirmation that the SD card format had proceeded, nothing else ever happened. I attempted to mount the card again w/o luck (kept getting a msg that it was now unmounted). Eventually, I decided to go ahead and restart the phone and see if that helps. Big mistake.
From this point forward, the phone refuses to fully start up into any Android ROM. Initially, it hung on the white HTC Incredible splash screen (yes, even w/ giving it an hour+ of time). I tried wiping and reflashing different ROMS over the period of the day yesterday to no avail.
Doing a full recovery via ClockworkMod (from my backup that I made before and copied back onto the SD card via USB) leaves me stuck on the HTC Incredible white splash screen.
MIUI - 2.2.10
Hangs on white splash screen
No go w/ or w/o SD card installed
MIUI - 2.2.17
Loads past white and MIUI splash screens
Instead of loading into Android homescreen, immediately loads up "Encryption" error and directs to "reset phone."
Repeated restart and attempts of resetting phone don't work
No go w/ or w/o SD card installed.
MIUI - 1.12.9
Hangs on white splash screen.
No go w/ or w/o SD card installed.
CM - 7.1.0
Hangs/loops on CM splash screen.
No go w/ or w/o SD card installed.
CM - 6.1.0
Hangs/loops on CM splash screen.
No go w/ or w/o SD card installed.
I looked into HBOOT options, getting PB31IMG.ZIP and PG86IMG.ZIP.img thinking maybe I could try reverting to stock at a friend's suggestion. HBOOT sees the files and "checks" them, even briefly showing a small vertical blue loading bar at the top-right corner, but never attempts to run/update them as I am lead to expect from all the instructions/encounters I've found on the net suggest. The screen info flashes by so quickly, I can barely read it, but I confirmed that it said "checking" and not updating or such. x.x
I considered trying to flash an updated copy of ClockworkMod Recovery, but I cannot do that w/o being able to load up the phone into Android.
I cannot run anything desktop-side, like ADB, as they all require the phone started up and put into USB-debugging mode.
I've looked into and tried all this and more, but nothing seems to be working.
My next idea is to try to forcibly downgrade the phone. Reasoning being that I read that the HBOOT will not try to update if it senses that the ROM is newer than its default settings(?). So, I need a good choice of "old" ROM that I can attempt to install via the HBOOT or CWM Recovery, and verify I have the correct files for HBOOT to try updating/running.
Again, this is a speculative attempt, but I'm willing to try whatever might work! Otherwise, I've got a fancy brick and my well-being on the line w/ no $$ to replace the phone. x.x
Thanks again for reading and hopefully offering some wonderful assistance! Sorry it's so long!
Feel free to ask Qs if you need clarification on stuff.

You need to gain s-off again before flashing with clockwork. How come you turned it back on?
"In a nutshell, S-OFF means that the NAND portion of the device is unlocked and can be written to. The default setting for HTC’s devices is S-ON, which means that neither can you access certain areas of the system nor can you guarantee a permanent root. Furthermore, signature check for firmware images is also ensured by the S-ON flag."
edit:
gain s=off boot into CMW wipe data, and factory reset. Flash a new rom of your choice and then boot. should get you back to a working phone.

The first time my phone was rooted/flashed, my bf did it for me. He used Unrevoked to root it and install CWM Recovery (v2.5.1.2 presently). I recall conversation being that having S-On would be better security with regards to the cell carrier (e.g., good to leave on, bad if off as they can see you rooted). So I agreed to having it put back to S-On, which I understood he then took care of.
Fast-forward a year and he now tells me he didn't actually end up running the other Unrevoked (Forever) tool to put S-On back in place, but that it simply *was*, so he left it that way. o.o;
Keep in mind, I've flashed 3 different ROMs since he originally rooted and flashed, w/o issues.
I pulled up everything to try re-rooting it again (to gain S-Off), but the instructions required having the phone loaded up and in debugging mode, which I cannot do as I cannot start up the phone past recovery in the first place.
Did I miss something that allows it via recovery? Going to check again in the meantime.

actually its better to keep it s=off so this type of situation wont happen. Your carrier cant see your hboot from my understanding on how this phone works. They dont care if you have root or not, unless you are trying to exchange the phone for another one from them or for insurance reasons. With root you only void your warranty on the phone and not your contract or anything to do with VZW. S=off is just a NAND lock, meaning you cant add your own custom recover to the phone, and you are limited to builds that come from VZW themselves (ie the security signature check).
If you ever want to take the phone back to them because its defective or call insurance then you need to remove root and S=on. but thats the only time you need to toggle the NAND lock.
ok so you will need to ruu to stock, downgrade then gain s=off over again:
for the ruu for GB:

OMG I may've gotten it!
So I decided to give things another go with attempting to revert to stock again, as at this point, nothing is going to work other than via HBOOT.
I completed another reformat of the SD Card (Fat32) to be on the overcautious side and copied over ONLY the PB32IMG.zip file and restarted into HBOOT.
(Ah.. new user, so not allowed to post the link of where I got it.)
This time, much like before, it scanned, found the file, and did a parsing/loading. However, THIS TIME it actually prompted me to update! I chose yes (Vol+) and let it do its thing.
At this time, I am happy to announce that it actually is back up stock!
Wooohoo! Now to get it back to how I like it again. XD
If nothing else, hope this information helps someone else later on.

You might have lost root if you did the ruu from hboot. to check download the app "super user" from market that will tell you if you still have root or not.
Alright, now that I'm back to stock and runnin' smoothly, I need to figure out what route to take for rooting and flashing. Everyone talks about Unrevoked3, but I've heard there're other newer tools, too.
What would you recommend?
....also, sorry for the weird delay/disjointed/incomplete responses. I keep forgetting that XDA severely limits my posting capabilities. I wanted to say super thanks wolf, for all your help and sticking with me! Your input is appreciated. And yes, I'm pretty sure I lost all root, etc. It is back to "out-of-the-box" stock as far as I can tell.

unrevoked3 is the easiest way. but you will need to downgrade to android 2.2 for the security exploit.

lol now worries. easiest way to get to the 10 limit is just pad the count in here. ie just say something 10 times and you are good to go.

Good news, I'm on 2.2 stock right now (just checked to confirm). So should be able to just go ahead and run Unrevoked3 then.
Also, the most popular recovery I'm aware of is ClockworkMod Recovery. I found that it's up to version 5.0.2.0. Would you recommend anything else or know of a newer version?
Figure if I'm going to do this, might as well do it right.

[Q] Cannot boot Android - black screen after HTC logo

I know, there are plenty of similar threads about this problem, but i found no one describing the same situation and offering good solution.
I rooted my HTC Desire Z about 3 months ago and since that i have been using ROM Virtuous Sense 2.0.0 without any troubles.
Yesterday, my phone was just lying on the table, while it suddenly restarted, i looked what happened and saw the HTC green logo on white background and then just black screen lasting for more then 10 minutes. I tried several times to to reset it by taking away the battery, but still the same. The most weird thing is, that it happened, while nobody was touching it and everything was ok. I can still go to the bootloader and to the Clockworkmod recovery, i tried wiping and formating the cash, but it didn't help.
Unfortunately i have no recent backups, so is there any way to fix it (at least temporarily, until i export contacts, app settings, etc) without wiping everything and installing the ROM again ?
If you require more info about hw/sw/status, just say.

1) I don't know much about android and rooting methods, i just found a website (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/wiki/HTC_Desire_Z:_Rooting) with a manual and i followed the steps without knowing what i was doing.
2) Yes, i can access both, and i can probably flash a new ROM, but i don't want until i know it is the only possible option
3) What i see on the main bootloader screen:

but i can access the phone with adb
when i try this cmd, the shell freezes without writing any output
cat /proc/kmsg | grep 'mmc0:0001'
but at first try it wrote this, before it froze

output of cat /sys/devices/platform/msm_sdcc.2/mmc_host/mmc0/mmc0:0001/name is
M4G2DE
note: wiping cash and dalvik cash didn't solve the problem, but i got stucked at the ROM logo instead of just black screen
It is looking as if you have a fried emmc and can not restore data or the phone no matter the method. If you are able to make a nanadroid (unlikely) you may be able to get some blob with your data but chances are phone is toast for good as well as any data on it
Sent from my HTC Vision using Tapatalk 2
I actually managed to do a full nandroid backup without any errors.
Would it be possible to wipe out and reinstall only the system partition and keep all user data unchanged ?
Not really, with a Linux box and some knowledge you can probably get you're info back then. But you'll have to ask someone else how I'm not good at understanding that language.
As for the phone you may be able to boot of SD card with the method catheral came up with, I believe I linked it in the other thread.
But of course just for sheer hope why not wipe and reinstall a new ROM. Occasionally the bad emmc seems to get a corrupt partition and a wipe/format will fix it.
then install a new ROM, know if this works it is only time before it goes bad again, possibly for good... its the nature of the chip
Or of course boot from SD, either way I suggest being on the lookout for a new phone as this one is either unrecoverable now or will be sometime (probably soon) at least you have the opportunity to get you're data back if you find someone with the knowledge

Looks like your prediction have come true.
After several unsuccessful attempts to recover system without removing user data, i did a full wipe and installed the ROM again. Then the phone booted successfully, but froze after few minutes, again and again.
Now it seems to be absolutely dead - power button does nothing and the LED doesn't light, when plugged to recharged. I guess it must be a hardware fault.
The phone is only 1 year and there is still warranty on it, so i have a good chance to return it to the shop, because since the chip is gone, they have little chance to discover that it was rooted and used other than stock ROM - am i right??
Anyway thanks for all the help
yup, and if i know you still had warranty i could have given you the super quick way of perma bricking your phone! but yeah, send it in now and see what the will offer you. if you can get another g2/dz id say take it as it is real hard to find a hardware qwerty to match. but of course choice is yours! good luck!

[Q] did system wipe now only boots to revolutionary

Hey guys, It's been long time since I've done any rooting or modding to my phone. However my HTC Evo 4G was not working properly at all. I would hit the back button and it would do a completely un-related function such as trying to remove the clock from the home screen. Anyway the phone is rooted I can't remember which version of android it was running, but this is the info at boot.

What I did was at this menu under HBOOT I guess it would be, I selected recovery which loaded the Android System Recovery and went to wipe and I wiped everything except the sdcard. I did this, because I was very frustrated with this phone and the way it was acting. I did try a normal system restore first to no success.
Now I would just like to get the phone in working order again if possible. I've searched and searched, but I'm not exactly sure what I am looking for. I assume I need to either load a rom somehow or the boot image, but every rom installation video or txt I've read was all done through the app store.
I don't care to search and search, but what is it exactly I need to search for to fix this? All of the "won't boot" threads I've read I didn't see one that was similar to mine.
Many thanks in advance.
Just download a ROM and flash it. It sounds like you have the phantom presses problem. I've had a few devices replaced because of it.

Download a ROM to your SD card, then boot to recovery. Wipe cache, Dalvik, data and system, then flash the ROM zip file, and reboot.

Thanks guys for the very quick response! I figured that's what I needed to do, though I've never installed or flashed any roms and I'm sure I can figure that out quite easily. Just been awhile since I did any cell modding.
Again thanks!
