Towelroot exploit helps root a number of Sony Xperia models
by XB on 16/06/2014
in Tips & Tricks
towelrootNotorious hacker Geohot (George Hotz) has turned his attention to rooting Android handsets and appears to have come up trumps with his latest exploit. For those that don’t know, Geohot managed to successfully jailbreak the PlayStation 3, which led to him being sued by Sony.
He has created Towelroot, which is an apk file that theoretically should be able to root pretty much any Android device using a kernel built before 3 June 2014 (Android 4.4.2 KitKat and lower).
A number of Sony Xperia users are reporting success in rooting their devices using towelroot including Xperia Z and ZL owners running the latest KitKat update and Xperia SP owners running Android 4.3. Other success stories have been reported by Xperia M, Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia M2 owners.
To try it yourself, all you need to do is head over to the Towelroot website, click on the lambda and download the apk. Then simply run towelroot i.e. tap “make it ra1n,” to see if it has worked. Some users have problems with SU binaries not updating, if that happens to be the case, use the latest version from here. There is also a very large XDA thread discussing towelroot here.

I would download Flashtool if you didn't already have it and use it to root your phone. You can use it to flash ftf files without having to use the PC Companion and it has built in root functionality.
You can't root firmware .62 or above. Either downgrade to .58 or lower, or live without root since you're not planning on unlocking
that's also my trouble and i don't know why!!!!
i tried a lot of ways and didn't work so please help me also -_-.....

I had unlocked my bootloader and set up my Xperia s with CM 9.1. As there were a lot of irregularities I wanted to revert Xperia s back to stock so I used the repair function from PC companion. Though everything seems to be back to normal but the facebook Timescape, download music info and I also think that the BE is not working (according to XDAians) but do find difference in videos and photos with BE enabled.
I would like my Xperia s back to stock with everything working like out of the box, no rooting no deodexing! Please help!
This is the current state of my mobile if it helps in helping me :-

flash stock rom and relocked your bootloader or relocked bootloader update via sus.
for timescape - theres already a fix for that on themes and apps section
for download music info- theres a fix for that on xperia s development section
for BE - i think its still working, cause mines working
I don't understand your first question can you be more precise?
And that timescape fix worked
And the download music info thing is for the rooted phones mine is unrooted and i want to keep it that way!

I don't understand your first question can you be more precise? - you said that you want to have rom out of the box so i said flash via flashtool or upgrade via sus (sony update service)
And that timescape fix worked - good
And the download music info thing is for the rooted phones mine is unrooted and i want to keep it that way! - but you cant have working download music info unless youre rooted, so make your choice.and i think you can uninstall superuser or supersu after that.
Ohk now i got everything working without root!

It's easy just download the runtimeskin.zip from the provided link and flash it using flash Gordon or move it manually using root explorer ( Root needed)

So after trying some more new roms out I cant get back to stock rom bootloader unlocks and locks ok however I cant root phone
I have been following many different guides and this one worked.
Download XperiaS_LT26i_6.2.B.1.96_KernelOnly.ftf | 6.33 MB
Download FlashTool from below link, if you don’t have it.
Download flashtool-0.9.11.0-windows.exe
STEPS for ROOTING :- ( Below steps are for root 6.2.B.1.96 firmware Xperia S )
Workin on both Locked as well as UnLocked Bootloaders.
Enable USB Debugging and unknown sources option on your phone before proceeding. Do not use other kit version except V18.
Download Flashtool, Open it. Flash the “XperiaS_LT26i_6.2.B.0.211_KernelOnly.ftf” file on your Xperia S. It is the kernel of an old firmware of Xperia S which was rootable.
Reboot your Xperia S after flashing. Connect to PC in USB Debugging mode.
Do not forget to close FLASHTOOL. CLOSE FLASHTOOL , before proceeding next step or you will get serious error.
Extract the downloaded “DooMLoRD_Easy-Rooting-Toolkit_v18_perf-event-exploit.zip” file and run the “runme_win” file.
Follow onscreen instructions to root Xperia S and once it is rooted, device will reboot. Verify that you are rooted, run SuperSU app.
Now switch off your Xperia S. OPEN FLASHTOOL.
Now you need to flash “XperiaS_LT26i_6.2.B.1.96_KernelOnly.ftf ” file in order to get back the true kernel of Android 4.1.2 6.2.B.1.96 firmware of Xperia S.
After flashing, disconnect the phone from PC, reboot it and your Xperia S is now rooted and we are done with rooting Xperia S 6.2.B.1.96 firmware.
However Now trying to repeat to fix and get rooted and other stuff back on phone doesn't reboot and add super user.
Before I got the following
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Now it just goes though the commands like it is doing something says done but does not reboot or show the popup like that.
Anyone got a working guide how to lock boot loader up proper n good think already done that and checked and says bootloader unlockable YES as as posed to unlocked
Android 4.4.4 firmware (14.4.A.0.108) rolling for Xperia Z1 Compact; certified for Xperia Z1 and Z Ultra
Somewhat surprisingly, Sony Mobile has started to roll the Android 4.4.4 KitKat firmware update for the Xperia Z1 Compact. This comes to the handset in the form of build number 14.4.A.0.108.
The update is currently rolling to users in Russia, Italy and Indonesia. We don’t have a changelog right now, so if you’ve downloaded the update let us know your thoughts below.

This same build version (14.4.A.0.108) was also certified by the PTCRB website for the Xperia Z1 and Z Ultra. It doesn’t appear that the update is rolling to these handsets though.

will come to us?
i don't think so. if it comes, it would be a miracle. we already got 4.2.2, 4.3 and now 4.4.2(eww! very buggy).

You never know. Sony is aware that they have pretty serious problems with the 4.4.2 wakelock/batterydrain errors and a prospective fix was seen for the Z/ZL on PTCRB. I'd say there is a chance that they will just roll the fix into 4.4.4 and push that out.
I also bet they were on a deadline to get the 4.4.2 out ASAP to the whole Zx series, as it's a baseline requirement for the simultaneously launched Smartband SWR10. Likely wanted to maximize their potential install base size.

that firmware fix is 10.5.A.0.233 which already rolled out to xperia z austria 3 carrier. it wasn't a bug fix. no firmware has been certified yet till now other than that. and it's been a month still many users haven't got 4.4.2 update yet including me!
Nope not seeing it. They still haven't rolled out 4.4.2 properly yet so I had to flash an ftf.
If you want 4.4.4 on a Sony phone you better buy one that's not as old as the ZL, because Sony has no interest in supporting outdated products.
