I just rooted my AFTV a while ago and everything seemed fine.
Installed the Slideme app and it seemed to work ok.
Tried to install Aptoid. Seemed to install then could not be found on the device.
Attempts to uninstall or reinstall failed. Said already exists.
Now all I get is [INSTALL_FAILED_INSUFFICIENT_STORAGE]
I've uninstalled several apps including Slideme and get the same thing.
It always shows 2.35GB Available.
Would resetting fix/restore it?
I don't care if I loose root right now.
Thanks
Ouch! That is unfortunate.
FWIW I have Aptoide installed and it runs great. Not sure what happened to your box. Did you do anything else?

How many apps have you instelled? Have you checked to see if your /data partition is full?
Update - [INSTALL_FAILED_INSUFFICIENT_STORAGE]
Decided to reset.
Trouble re-registering box - probably due to update blocking also block device reg. Had to remove block.
Did not loose root - re-installed everything (SU, busybox, xbmc and stickmount) and have 4.81GB avail.
Where do you check the data partition? - Thanks

Thank you for your response. I have installed 70 or so apps between installing and uninstall. I currently have about 30 installed now. I am not sure how to check my data partition

How did you remove the block? I'm in the same boat. I factory reset but now can't get past the registration screen. I can't use ADB to connect either.

First I removed the update blocks I had on my router.
Then I thought maybe it wouldn't register because it was already registered.
So I signed on at amazon.com and de-registered the FireTV. - then registration worked after a short wait.
Everything is good now.
Good to know everything is working fine after restore with root.
But did you do the host file block and/or the disable com.amazon.dcp before the reset? This would be important information for others.
Thanks

So you did not edit the host file, right? In another post someone can't register after reset but he edited the host file and also disable the amazon.dcp.
So probably the amazon.dcp is restored with the reset but not the host file. I wonder if only disabling the amazon.dcp is enough and probably safer.
Thanks again

Then this is my problem too. Mine had both the host file updated and I disabled the amazon.dcp. mine is stuck on the registration screen. Now the question is, how can I get to the hosts file without ADB?
Host file edits
I did not edit my host file (glad) . Looked back at instructions.

Warning
Be sure to restore your Hosts settings back to default BEFORE factory resetting your Fire TV.
KillerJoe is probably right. Disabling the amazon.dcp might be enough and safer.

I've updated the post to include a warning. I've also reordered the methods so that disabling the package is first and labeled it as recommended.
I've also put up a new post detailing the two most common ways of bricking.
Forgive the newbie question but I want to make sure I do a factory reset correctly. From my understanding if I changed the host file in Host editor I will need to change it back to default. But if I did it through ADB pm "disable com amazon dcp" I dont need to change anything back or do I?
That's correct by the reports so far. But to be on the safe side, i would also enable amazon.dcp before a factory reset. At least for now.
Enviado de meu GT-N7100 usando Tapatalk
People need to remember that factory resets usually only wipe cache and data, they don't touch system apps. That's why most of the time you can do one, then just reinstall Superuser and still have root because the su binary the root package installed is untouched.
In case anyone else is worried about resetting there FTV here is what I did and it works perfect.
1) I deleted the 3 host files I created to block the updates
2) I changed "pm disable com.amazon.dcp" and just changed the word disable to enable
3) I still had the update links blocked on my router and had no issues registering, nor did I have to delete my account in Amazon (like others have mentioned)
4) The only mistake i made was i uninstalled the amazon photo app and forget to add it back from my uninstall recycle bin before i reset. So now I have no way of getting it back but didnt care for it in the first place. Hope this helps someone else.
5) remember to turn usb debbing back on it turns off after the reset, which i forgot at first.
6) As others have mention i did not lose root after the reset.

Hey,
So to a total newcomer to the whole rooting thing, i was wondering exactly what the dangers with rooting is? What does it open up to malware that wasnt there before?
When you jailbrake an i-device you for example hafto change the root password since its the same for all jailbroken devices after jailbrake.
Can someone break it down easy?
Many thanks!

Well there's a danger you can accidentally delete something you shouldn't have. You do have access to the file system after all.
Malware threats are overblown on platforms outside of Windows. Android and iOS malware still needs you to purposely install an apk/ipa. If not, they're usually sent through SMS/MMS, which the Ouya is incapable of. <_<'
Pretty much the only ways you can get malware is if you sideload it or if it somehow sneaks into the stores.
There's one specific exploit... but that doesn't affect the Ouya because:
1. It's not Samsung.
2. It doesn't have GSM/3G/HSDPA.

No such restriction exists on Android. My Ouya account is still usable after rooting (and it coexists with my Google account).
thank you for taking the time to explain it!
Will root after morning coffe then =) If i do a system reset ( in the ouya menu´s ) will the root disappear? Or do i manually have to uninstall it if i want to make it factory original again?

Root disappears if you factory reset, or there's a system update. So be prepared to reroot if there's an update. Keep the one click app handy! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387507
You should take a look at this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2359390
I haven't had the opportunity to test the superuser preserve function yet (I updated before rooting), so just in case be prepared to reapply your root.
Ouya isn't Sony, I don't think they'll be blocking root access anytime soon.

Ah yes, the Play Store hack is what's known as a dirty hack. It leaves crumbs that persist through a factory reset. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=44166123&postcount=158
PS: you'll need root access to delete those. After you get rid of the play store stuff you can factory reset again and it shouldn't be back.

E's file explorer should be able to do it, but I think you need to mount system/ as R/W because it doesn't do so automatically. http://androidcowboy.com/2013/06/how-to-uninstall-system-apps-with-es-file-explorer/
If the above doesn't work, you're missing the superuser app.
These days I just connect things to my computer via microusb and use adb shell to deal with the file system; I still need busybox for that.
puh, got it done.. missed the part that you gotta show root explorer on the left menu.. Holy sh*t im out of my league here =)
If i install the framework only will that leave bits and peaces to, or is it only playstore that does this? i saw that the framework had an uninstall / cleanup function in the app so im guessing that it takes care of itself?
If i disable root acces after installing the framwork will the framework still function or do it need to be rooted all the time?
Big thank you for the fast reply´s!

The framework needs root access.
The playstore mod is the only one that leaves bits and pieces AFAIK... next time before you factory reset, run the cleanup tools and uninstall the mod first. (Sorry I didn't warn you before. I forgot. >.<)

Has anyone else been getting RPC:S-5:AEC-0 errors?
I tired wiping both caches and data from app manager. nothing
Tried wiping cache from recovery. nothing.
tried wiping cache and factory restore. nothing.
After I rooted apps were installing fine but then it just stopped.
Any suggestions? Im gonna try to see if I can find an odin file of it stock.
EDIT: So I used a odin stock image. Still getting error. Any suggestions?
Do tmobile employees check to see if it has been flashed?
Gonna try to go back to store and see if can get it replaced with another. But cant till later. This sucks....
FIX looks like it was on googles servers. Back to normal but this is on stock after I odin, Ill wait on the root to see if others are still getting problems.

I was getting the above error too even after performing a device reset. I reflashed the root a second time and it is working. The only difference is I enabled USB debugging in the Developer options the second time, not sure if that really made a difference though.

Ah wow, I was getting these errors too. Thought it was unrelated and a server side issue (still might be, account specific?)
I'm writing this without reading the suggestions above but, what eventually worked for me (after removing accounts, factory reset, clearing play store data & play framework whether necessary or not)..
Went to Google dashboard (all on PC), made sure device was there, went to play.google.com (computer)-- it errored and froze, logged out, back in, worked eventually, viewed my installed apps (took like 5 minutes to load), started installing apps from there. Once that was working, it worked on my device.
The curious part was, initially, when I'd search for ANY app on play.google.com, it would show no results. Opening in incognito (not signed in), it worked fine.

Yes, had the same problem on my SM-N900T, not on either of the other two [N900/A], it took creating a new google account and also clearing the cache for google services framework, google play and uninstalling the play store update. I had to do this a couple of times, seemed to work better for me without a reboot, but this is the right path for fixing this problem.
Hope this helps,

it voids your samsung warranty to be exact. if you take it back to tmobile with tmobile warranty, they will still fix/replace hardware issues.
About to root for the simple fact I can not stand the headphones auto adjusting. I need it louder then normal and tired of playing music at maxed settings just to hear music and then a few songs later it acts like its supposed to. (work in a factory)
Anywho: Does this method still give you the option of having auto updates from Tmobile for bug fixes and stuff or do we need to manually keep an eye open for updates?
(coming from Rooted Stock Note 2 thats why im asking. Not big on romming)

This is a MultiWindow Mod that allows you to select any apps you want for use with MultiWindow mode. I did not create this, I'm simply sharing it because I can't be the only one who wanted more MultiWindow apps and this is the first place VZW users will check for such a thing, henceforth simplifying the search process. It also doesn't say that it works for G4 but I can personally verify this has worked on my VZW G4 flawlessly. Use at your own risk, as with any root thing, problems can always occur even though 99% unlikely.
Instructions are pretty much unnecessary but I'll state them anyway.
1. Download the APK onto your phone and install it.
2. Open the app and allow root.
3. Select the applications you want for MultiWindowed mode then press Apply.
4. Reboot the phone via the same button where Apply was located.

You can push files via adb from stock recovery (hold power+voldown). Just push a stock build.prop from a verizon g4 over.
Or factory reset

I tried the unpaid version and would always get a force closed error,
I then modified the build.prop file as above after which it would no long successfully boot (stuck on Verizon splash)
Tried all options:
Safe mode
USB debug mode
Factory data reset
Wipe cache
nothing worked.
Tried to access the build.prop file via ADB but not available in Stock Recovery mode.
Eventually had to KDZ, reroot, and restore from backup via Fireflash
If you are going to try this make sure you have good backup!
Thanks a lot! Just tried the free apk and its working

I am trying to find a good method to permanently block updates on my Rooted Fire TV 2 but many of the guides aren't very good or just don't work.
I would like for the method of blocking updates to be system based (Survives factory reset) I do not want to use Network based solutions since those may or may not last forever (or at least for the life of the machine)
I do not want to Solutions involving pm disable or pm hide because they do not survive a factory reset
using build.prop could work but I already tried this guide to no avail
another solution could be a stubbed version of the DeviceSoftwareOTA apk that always returns a value of being up to date, but since I'm probably not able to build it myself it's not really realistic

I have been using pm disable, the only thing that concerns me about that method is that it can't survive a data wipe. I want to find a method that can survive a data wipe without completely removing DeviceSoftwareOTA.apk and KFTVlauncher.apk (Contains Amazon Video, store, search ,and settings functions)
(If I remove DeviceSoftwareOTA I have to also remove KFTVlauncher or the device will be semi-bricked after a factory reset [can't complete setup without checking updates])

The pre-rooted roms wont take updates, from what i have seen they recommend as a back up. The recovery should be disabled.

But you can also to the lineage sloan 12.1 rom. That might work better for 3rd party apps and google,,, But it doesnt seem stable enough to me.

My guess is that you still have the bootloader unlocked.
If you decide to re-lock the bootloader, it's gonna factory reset & wipe all data.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I didn't think app could verify this so easily.
I'd like as much as possible to not wipe the device, is there any way to confirm what triggered the app to find the "root" though it is not rooted any longer ? Any logs I could check perhaps ?

One other thing is to remove the magisk app .apk if you downloaded it. Some programs do scan your files and if they see magisk in your files they deem you as "rooted".

Thanks for the suggestion.
I didn't think app could verify this so easily.

Before factory resetting, you could also try a dirty flash of the latest firmware.zip or using the official online Google Pixel Flash Tool.

I don't think apps are allowed to read other app's data by default anymore?

It is not reading another apps data. It literally is scanning filenames. If you grant an app permission to read/write files, it can read any downloaded file to determine if it is magisk related.

I would be very suspicious of any app requesting such a permission, if it doesn't really need it.
Hi Folks,
Thanks everyone for your suggestions !
I removed all Magisk apps files, applications which needed root (though I'm not root, but was), and this fixed the issue here (I had in my hide list from nova an app called Root Explorer and I think the issue got resolved after I uninstalled it lol).
Have a great evening !
On a side note, moving to A13 ruined my great battery life, sadge.
I had poor battery on Sept A13 release. Oct A13 security release seemed to fix this.
Cheers,
