[Q] No way to turn off vibrate for apps? - Sony Xperia ZL

Not sure if this is an Android 4.1 and beyond problem, but with my phone on vibrate, I'm unable to disable vibration within Gmail and Facebook even though the vibration options are turned off within those apps. I'm on Android 4.3 now on my ZL.
Has anyone been able to reproduce this problem? It's pretty annoying that my phone needs to vibrate on every single notification. I'd much prefer it only vibrate on calls and sms/mms.

After much research this looks like a general problem with Android 4.2 and beyond:

Looks like the ONLY way to keep apps like Facebook and Gmail from vibrating is to make sure their notification ringtone is ALSO off.
Kind of ridiculous but it doesn't look like Google will be fixing this problem.

Phone NOT vibrating for notifications during phone calls!

Note: my phone is usually in silent mode (only vibrates for all notifications).
When I am in a phone call and someone texts me, the phone is not vibrating to let me know I have received a text. My Evo did this, and it is a great way to be notified while in a phone call. Wish I could get this phone to do the same thing.
Does anyone have any suggestions on any settings, apps, mods, etc. to change this?

I had this same problem with other Samsung phones. My moment never notified me audibly while I was in-call, either, until I applied a ROM that took the SMS app from some US Cellular phone.
Try Go SMS, it has options for audible or vibrate notifications... It will even allow you to customize the vibrate pattern if you like.
Did you try setting vibrate to always?

Jelly Bean Messaging Bug?

My Galaxy Nexus finally got the JB update. I love everything about it thus far, except one thing: It seems when I get a text message while in the default application, it'll play my selected ringtone as it would from ICS, but the one key, and very annoying difference is, I cannot stop the tone from playing. I like to set a 30 second or so long tone for my texts, and while I'm using the app as a text comes it, it sounds off, and there's no possible way to stop it without having to silence my phone entirely, and even then, when I put the sound back on before it's done, it's still sounding off. Whereas in ICS, the notification still popped up in the notification bar like previous versions of Android, but not in JB for some reason? Can anybody please help me out here? How can I stop this from occurring without having to silence my phone entirely?
Use a shorter notification sound or vibrate around folks.

[Q] Gmail 4.2 not respecting vibrate setting?

My GNex is running 4.2 now, and I've noticed that when the phone is on silent, the phone vibrates when new gmail messages come in. If I check the settings, it specifically says "Never" under vibrate settings.
Has Google changed Gmail's vibrate behavior in 4.2 so that Never actually means Sometimes?
Can anyone confirm?
I hope this gets fixed!

Yes, I have the same issue, for both Gmail and Calendar
It vibrates in ALL notifications. Someone knows how to disable it?
Regards!
Just a hunch, but I tried it and it worked. If you don't care about not having any notification for gmail (sound or vibrate) then set the notification sound to silent and vibrate never. Unfortunately you won't get sound if you want that, but at least it's not vibrating now.

I want to keep the vibration on for stuff like text messages, just not email. When I'm at work I can read my email on my computer, so I turn my phone to vibrate so that it's not beeping all day long. With 4.2, I've replaced beeping with vibrating. It's very annoying.
Google, never means NEVER!

This works for gmail, but not the email app that I use for my work email.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
I'm having the same issue, and it's very annoying. I want to keep the image in the notification bar, but I don't want it to vibrate - like I had before the 4.2 update. I even tried toggling the notifications off and on and toggling between "only on silent" and "Never," but it continues to vibrate. I only want my phone to vibrate for text messages/google voice messages.
There is at least one bug ticket raised for this.

Star it to get it some attention.
Possible solution
Possible solution, for those of you who usually only run between sound and vibrate mode on your phone. Just go into the gmail settings and toggle the vibrate to "only in silent mode" you won't get a vibrating notification...
That's what I just set mine to do.

This didn't work for me. Always vibrates when in vibrate mode no matter what I have set. Funny enough, when I set the phone to silent mode there is no vibration even when it is set to 'Only in silent mode'.
I just hope this is identified as a bug and wasn't done on purpose. It's going to be an annoying few weeks while I wait for another OTA.
Any update to this? I'm having the same problem with text messages vibrating.
Same issue here. I have a custom 4.2 ROM flashed with this problem. I even tried reverting back to stock and reflashing. That did not solve the problem.
Same problem for me with official 4.2 OTA update, on a yakju galaxy nexus
That's no GMail bug, unfortunately it's a new "feature" introduced in Android 4.2. If you ar looking at the commits in AOSP, you can see it is a new system wide sound-to-vibrate conversion feature.
If you change the phone to vibrate mode, all applications which are playing notification sounds are then vibrating. Genious!
It should be possible to deactivate vibration therefor if you disable the notification sound in the specific app.

Apps with vibration off still vibrate..

I just got my Note 3 today and noticed that apps with vibration off still vibrate when notifications are received. Anyone else have this issue?
For those who might not understand what I mean:
When the phone is on vibrate mode, only the apps with vibration on are supposed to vibrate. However, the apps with vibration off are also vibrating.
I don't like this
Try to disable the vibration on the app itself and see what happens.
for me viber is doing this, even when set to silent I still have phone vibrate when receving messeges on viber and yes vibration is ticked off. I only fixed this via app info window>untick show notifications
Note 3 vibrate
I am having this same problem as well with my note 3. I have both my gmail and outlook app set not to vibrate, but when I put my phone on vibrate so it doesn't ring while I am at work my phone will still vibrate every time I get e-mail despite having vibrate un-check in both apps. It works fine when I have my volume on.
Now I can't turn vibrate off for notifications because I still need to be notified that I get text when my phone is on vibrate.
If anybody figures this out please do tell
Thanks,
An update on what I've discovered:
I took a guess that this might not be a bug but a feature (a really stupid one) and installed Android 4.3 leak on my old Note 2, which previously was on 4.1.2 and did not have this issue. On 4.3, it brings up this problem. Apps with vibration off will vibrate in vibrate mode. So I guess it is normal.. can anyone else with Android 4.3 on other devices confirm?
ALSO: The stock apps Email and Calendar do not do this. If vibrate is off, and the phone is in vibrate mode, then notifications from these apps won't vibrate.

Notification vibrations - do I have this right? (If so, wtf?!)

I've seen a few posts about this, but never a definitive statement, and it's such odd default behavior that I want to check I have this right:
- If you have app notifications on the _phone_ on silent or vibrate, then the _watch_ notification will be silent; if it makes a noise on your phone then it will vibrate
- There is no way to override/workaround this on a per app basis
?
This is really annoying if true since I have most of my apps set to vibrate only, and I therefore want them to vibrate on my watch..

I don't experience this at all. No matter if my phone is on silent vibrate or ringer, the 360 still gets the notification. [VZW HTC M8 Stock.]

Do your notifications vibrate on your watch even when not making a sound on your phone?
Mine definitely don't (s3), but if I turn on sound on eg gmail, I'll then get watch vibrations

This is how mine works as well, I am using a Moto X running 4.4.4.
Hmm so strange ... It's not like there are billions of settings I could have misconfigured. And this is with gmail (and everything else), so not obscure apps
Fwiw I found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/and...tion-watch-t2887718/post55687468#post55687468 with a potential solution.
