Device not recognized

"USB Device Not Recognized"
I have searched for so long trying to figure out what's wrong. I'm out of idea's on how to fix it, nothing will recognize my Evo.
Tried on 4 different computers, two of them running 7, one running xp, and last running vista, all say the same thing, computers not the problem.
Downloaded htc sync, disabled/enabled usb debugging, restarted the phone many times, restarted computers, and even changed the default usb connection to HDD and HTC sync.
I rooted using the idiot proof guide and used the Sprint Rom he linked in the guide. Would love some help. Thanks!

Try downloading the auto sync app in market

Just tried that and still not recognizing it.

Which HTC Sync did you try? I think the latest is 2.0.40

set the EVO connection type to HTC SYNC and USB DEBUGGING ENABLED.
Assuming you've used ADB, what response you you get from
ADB DEVICES at the command prompt?
you should get something like
C:\>adb devices
adb server is out of date
* daemon started successfully *
List of devices attached
HT05EHL10353 device
and we will know you have a good physical connection to the computers. If it doesnt show up, try a different USB cable....

Thanks for the help! I checked for my device in ADB and it does not list it, so i guess my cable is probably bad. I'll go out and buy another and hopefully that fixes the problem.

When i connect my phone in recovery mode, it still just says device not recognized, so i can't really do that.

Sorry but bump, i relly need help with this.
It still says unknown device when i try to connect my phone in recovery mode.

Go into your computers device manager and uninstall the device and htc sync, then reinstall sync and make sure usb debugging is on then plug it in
Edit: sorry, go into the device manager with it plugged in. if its not there (should be a yellow or red triangle next to it or neat the to as a HID) them it could be your cable or phones port.

Just tried that and it's a no go, still the same problem, Also tried another cable today and that didn't help either.
I have light leakeage at the bottom of my phone, so i think i'm going to take it in for that and just get a replacement.

I think you need to pay closer attention to the guide, because this statement makes no sense in reference to the guide.
The guide is helping you install ADB drivers, you don't need to do anything in ADB while your phone is in recovery in that guide.
Could be wrong, but I'm still fairly certain that the guide will fix your issue, because I had the same problem.
It's as simple as you do not have the correct, or any ADB drivers, therefore your phone is not showing up as a device under ADB. Once you have the proper drivers installed, your device will show up.

I followed the simple guide step by step.
When i boot into recovery mode i end up with this in the picture.
His recovery mode shows an Evo with a little exclamation mark next to it, i'm guessing what i got is still recovery mode. But still if i plug my phone in my computer still says unknown device, so i can't install ADB drivers.

You just have a different recovery. Once you are in recovery, you don't need to do anything else on your phone specifically.
Instead, connect your phone to your PC via USB if it isn't already and open up device manager on your PC and follow the rest of the guide.
Edit: Where does it say unknown device? In Device Manager?

It shows up in usb controllers instead of other devices as he shows in the guide. If i try to update the driver it just tells me it's already up to date.

Gotta bump, would really love to just fix this instead of driving 30 mins to a sprint store.
So i followed the guide for installing apb drivers, but even in recovery mode my phone still shows up as unknown device in device manager.

Ok, well I just ran into this myself on my secondary computer. Have you tried a different USB port on your PC?
My front ones were giving me unknown device, but as soon as I plugged it into one of the ports on the back of the mobo ADB showed right up in device manager.

Factory reset it and get it exchanged.I belief is the SD card failure issue.

I have the same problem and posted this question on 3 forums including the HTC support forum and nobody has been able to find the correct solution.
I know the cable and the port is good because I can connect my Samsung Moment to it and it works perfectly. On the Evo, I've downloaded the latest HTC Sync from the official HTC site, tried the one on the microsd card, checked and un-checked USB debugging, and still it doesn't connect.
The Evo won't connect to my Win 7 computer at home, Win XP at work, but it will connect to my daughters computer which is running Win XP also (all 32 bit).
I bought this Evo from Best Buy exactly 28 days ago today. Do they give you 30 days to return it, or is that only the Sprint store?

They do give u 30 day trial.go get it exchanged or...........

[Q] Unrecognized Device only in hboot/fastboot

Let me say beforehand that I am a lifetime lurker. I would not be posting here if I hadn't already spent at least two days scouring the web for an answer.
My HTC Desire HD cannot connect to HTC Sync, but it can connect as a storage device, and can be seen by adb. Whenever it connects while in hboot/fastboot, it will flicker "USB" a few times before Windows tell me it's not recognized (Device failed enumeration code 43). This includes using the RUU wizard from HTC. That will just make it stick on "RUU" in the bootloader.
I have tried every driver download suggested on this site. I have switched USB cables three times (all htc cables). I have used two seperate computers (Windows 8 and Windows 8.1).
I'll admit I'm a nooby specifically to Androids. All I want to do is flash new ROMs/root my device. As far as I know this is step one, and I can't go any further until I've unlocked my bootloader.
EDIT: SOLVED
HTC Desire HD drivers really hates Windows 8 and 8.1. Installed Windows 7 32-bit and it worked just fine.

That error can be a pain in the ass. I have it as well. I believe disabling griver signature enforcement in win8 (it's your OS, isn't it?) should allow installing adb drivers, but I was too lazy to check it. As a workaround I instead flash the boot.img in bootloader by putting it to PD98IMG.zip
I can upload you a template, leave the txt in it and replace the boot.img with your desired one, choose store (none) compression level, then put the zip directly (don't use folders) in sd card
EDIT: I didn't fully read your post before. If you don't have S-OFF most probably you can't get away without adb drivers..

Turned off device signing. No effect.

Have you tried now manually installing drivers in device manager while the phone is in unrecognized state? Does it still say the drivers are incompatible?

I have those drivers. I installed them manually. I tried the updating the drivers through device manager and pointing them directly to the drivers folder I need, and Windows is insistent that not having ANY drivers installed is the best driver to have installed for my device.
I am getting a pop up saying that the device is failing to to start. It's not like other usb devices I might have plugged in and they just sit there in at least their correct category in device manager.
The part that ticks me off most, is that this exact problem on this exact model has been solved on three different forums, and each time the OP just said "nvm I fixed it" and never even bothered to explain how for the rest of us.
It's really hard not to curse right now.

Once again, this only happens in the hboot/fastboot/RUU. Once the phone has loaded the OS it works totally completely fine, save for HTC Sync not seeing the phone and vice versa. I don't understand why some drivers would only work sometimes unless something is wrong with my bootloader, and if so, how do i fix it?

Nothing is wrong with your phone, same thing happens to me, I just thought disabling driver signing should fix it, like I said I was too lazy to check it since I found workaround for my needs.

Power down DHD and connect it to PC. I realized, my win7 was installing drivers, while phone was off.

It appears to be the same device/drivers when powered off or when in the Android environment. While in the bootloader, it shows as an unknown device.
I also noticed that only when I am trying to update via RUU, it says instead "Device Descriptor Request Failed"

The boot.img is in the ROM-zip-file packed. But I think, if its a RUU it is called PD98...img

Try this, I know its from Samsung, but this installs fastboot drivers and drivers used for ADB access

My drivers list does not show the Google or HTC drivers like yours does after installing all the things in your links. In fact, that's the fourth time I've downloaded those Google/HTC Win7 64x drivers from people around the web. They are not in my drivers list after installing them via the INF files. I must be doing something wrong.

Did you browse to the folder where the manual driver files reside?

To be exact I have:
Tried HTC Sync
Tried HTC Drivers Installer
Tried to Automatically search for drivers
Tried to install drivers by using the inf Install option
Tried to manually select drivers by pointing to the folder the Win7 64x drivers were placed
Tried to manually install by picking out the exact inf files
Tried to install from device drivers list, were they were not listed
Tried these steps with driver signing turned off
Tried all of these steps with another PC
I still think the issue is related to the fact that it only has problems in the bootloader menu

Ok, like u know I had this issue. Now I randomly managed to fix it when I needed adb drivers for my new toy (Sanei tablet for 40$ lol)
The mistake I was making is that I was trying to install the drivers while device was in fastboot, but apparently you can get away with casual "My HTC" drivers which can be installed when DHD is booted into Android. It looks likethe phone is not being detected from bootloader (it doesn't like any of the drivers I had tried), but I can fully use ADB while it's in recovery or starting/trying to boot OS, so it should be enough for rooting/unlocking bootloader.
I remember with HTC Wildfire I had drivers package with seperate drivers for Android and fastboot, so I had to install different driver after rebooting to fastboot, but with these new drivers and win8 it doesn't work out this way.

Solved. Used Windows 7 32-bit. Windows 8.1 was the culprit.

I am facing the same problem and I too have tried different methods like you did. Am using Windows 8.
Gotta try on Windows 7. Shall update if that solves my problem too.

Phone isnt recognized in fastboot

Can anyone help me?
I'm running windows 8 64-bit, and I have an HTC One from VZW.
The phone is recognized via ADB, but whenever I get into the bootloader, it tells me the device isnt recognized and I can't do any fastboot commands with it. I was able to root and use fastboot on my N7 2013 from the same PC, so this is frustrating because I want to send my One in to sonic but if I can't DO anything when I s-off there's no point in sending it it.
If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

I would just install HTC Sync, sounds like it's a driver issue and HTC Sync will provide those needed new drivers for HTC.

sorry, thought I read it installed all the new drivers, you could try using Google to find the HTC current drivers, I can give you the numbers I have on mine my cpu is win 7 64bit not sure if it'll help but when in "uninstall or change a program" my HTC BMP USB Driver driver # is 1.0.5375
and my HTC Driver Installer driver # is 4.0.1.001
can't say it this helps at all but this is the CPU I used that I fixed the issue with

My BMP is the same but my HTC Driver Installer is 4.0.3.001
Maybe I can find that other one and it will work for me

Here is a previous post I made to another guy having the same problem. Not sure if this will help but this is what I did.
I had this problem too running windows 8 x64. I think my problem was that I installed the sdk first with google's USB driver and not HTC's driver. What I did to make it work is switch computers over to my wifes which at the time I hadn't installed anything on yet. I went to htcdev.com and went to the part of the site where it is step-by-step on how to unlock the bootloader. I installed the Java Runtime Environment on the link provided on the upper right side of the site, then I installed the HTC sync manager on the link provided as well. I had my phone connected to my computer usb 2.0 (not usb 3.0) the whole time and with USB debugging enabled (not in fastboot mode, but with phone normally on). After that I took the three files from the sdk that htc wants you to place in a separate folder and put them in c:\Android. I did not install anything from sdk this go around.. i just took the three files out and put them in a separate folder as instructed by htc. After that I opened cmd and directed it to the folder I placed the files in (cd c:\Android) and ran command "adb reboot bootlader" Once I did that and hit fastboot the "My HTC" in device manager no longer had an exclamation point. So in summary, I couldn't reverse the drivers from my computer that I installed first so I resorted to using my wife's computer that didn't have anything installed yet. I installed JRE, then HTC sync software, and just used the 3 files HTC wants from sdk and placed them into a separate folder. I didn't install anything from sdk. It all worked after that. I don't have instructions on how to reverse the usb drivers you have already installed because I couldn't figure it out... in fact, I formatted windows on my pc and am reinstalling. Hope this helps.

Yeah I'm going to try it out on my roommates laptop that only has samsung drivers and the ADB installed and see what happens. Can't reformat the PC cause it's my School desktop and I've got work on there.
Once my macbook pro comes back from repairs I'll use that though, since I've never had issues running adb commands on my mac

Found a soultion
After I tried almost everything I tried to improvise and try something totally different and it worked!
First uninstall the driver in the Device Manger and then press to update it >> then press Browse my Computer for driver Software >> then press on Let me pick from list.... >> in the list choose the Portable Devices >> choose MPT USB Drive !
And It works...

MPT USB Drive isnt one of my options
However I've found that it's microsofts USB3 drivers, which override the Intel ones.
I just got my macbook back from repairs and it has USB3 ports as well so I was worried it wouldnt work, but its working fine from there

I'm having this same problem and nothing I do is working. I even tried from another computer but had no luck. adb finds the phone fine but fastboot just won't work. This is keeping me from getting S-Off. Someone please help.

[Q] Unable to connect M9 to Windows PC

Got a weird one - got the M9, able to connect it at work and on a laptop but not the computer I've got ADB and everything on.
Phone simply does not recognize as a USB drive, I get that it's looking for "Android phone" but it never shows as a device. (MTP, ADB, etc) Suggesting where the HTC drivers I just downloaded results in me getting that they're not what it's looking for.
This is a computer that has worked for my EVO 4G, 3D, 4G LTE, One m7, m8 along with being fine with a host of other devices.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled everything I know to do but no ADB, no MTP. Not a recognizable device to windows other than being "Android Phone" with no drivers findable.
Some things I've done:
Installed HTC Sync
Deleted HTC Sync
installed HTC drivers pack
removed
Bang head on keyboard
Plug into different USB ports
Change cable
Just one computer, the one that I've used with no problem for ages, wants to be a punk

Yup. I just get "Android Phone" as an unrecognized device. I've also set to Disk Drive, MTP, debugging on and off.
Just plugged in the M8, same issue... so it's something that's not M9 specific...

Well that's as far as my expertise goes haha.

Was this resolved? Having this same issue...

It looks like you are just trying to get ADB?
* Make sure USB debugging is enabled (I know you said it is).
* Make sure your computer is not blacklisted on your phone from making connections to ADB.
* Make sure any htc sync or driver package is totally removed.
* Make sure your keyboard still works enough after the head banging. You will only need a mouse, enter, space, a, b, c, d, e, i, s and v to complete the following; but more is always better just in case you need an h or something.
Look in Device Manager. Is it an unknown device (is there a yellow exclamation mark or something next to it)?
Try deleting the driver that it's using - like actually choose to delete the driver software from your machine, not just remove the device.
Once you're totally clean and the phone shows up with a yellow !, try update driver -> let me choose -> have disk -> your android sdk's extras/google-usb-driver .inf.
Pick one of the ADB ones, not sure if it'll be composite or the other one, then test with
Code:
adb devices
in your cmd window.
If it shows up, cool. If not try the other ADB usb driver from the inf...

Thanks. I tried this and nothing helped. Finding the device from ADB devices isn't the issue. It is that the SD card does not show up in Windows Explorer. Other than taking the SD card out and using a micro SD card adapter for my PC, I cannot transfer files via USB. See attached image. The MTP is the issue. Why doesn't HTC Sync/Drivers from HTC.com fix this? -_-;

Oh, I'm sorry I misunderstood your need. Well if adb works yes can always push/pull... Which version of Windows are you on? Is it possibly a 32/64 bit driver issue? I'm reaching here, HTC sync should cure whatever ails you... I hate MTP.

Windows 7, yea it's probably a64 bit problem.

I' having the same issue. M9 not recognized as an MTP device on Win 10 64 bit. Running CM 12.1. Adb works, and the device shows up in Device Manager as "MTP USB Device" under "Portable Devices" section. Right clicking gives only propertied and scan for h/w change option, there is no option to update device driver. Phone shows up as HTC M9 under "Unspecified" category in "Devices and Printers".
My Lg G2 runs CM12.1 as well and works fine as mtp device. (Adb works too). I have been trying everything to get M9 working, but failed.

Solved the issue trying random things! The issue was the xposed module "Xposed Media Scanner Optimizer" which was preventing MTP mode by not allowing media scanner to run.

I do not have that module installed, so that can't be what is keeping Windows from noticing my phone as a storage device.
Also, if i hadn't mentioned it before, I am able to see my device with adb devices in the command prompt.

Most likely it is a driver conflict or missing drivers. Uninstall all portable device drivers and start again.
I wish I stole my HTC M9.

I have the same issue, nothing! MTP device driver is not present...adb works but MTP nothing.
Please, someone check if the win 10 installed is N version? maybe is this the problem, maybe....

Something to try. Connect your phone to the PC, then go into device manager and look for portable devices. The phone should be listed there and most likely you will see a yellow triangle on it. Click on it and choose to uninstall. After it uninstalls, unplug the phone from the PC and then plug it back in. Allow it to fully re-install before doing anything.

Nope. I've played with device manager for over an hour at a time. Windows doesn't like m9.

Well, my understanding is that the driver used for mtp for Android devices is the same driver that is used for Windows Media Player. When you connect your phone to the PC and open Windows Media Player, is the phone listed there? If not, then you may have something interfering with media scanner. Have you tried starting the M9 in safe mode and then connecting to the PC?

Device Shown as Offline after GPe rom flash

Hi all,
I rooted my M8 recently with the Windroid toolkit. Everything worked great, and I flashed the digitalhigh GPE rom and love it.
Now when I try to connect my phone to my computer, I do not receive the prompt for RSA key trust. My phone shows offline on my 8.1 VM and it is just not found on my Windows 7 machine. It also shows offline on a Macbook Air. I have tried everything I can find to get USB debugging to start working again but I just can't seem to find out what needs to be done. I have the latest version of the HTC drivers I believe and I should have the latest add drivers. On Sense, I had to turn on USB debugging and select the phone to be mounted as a disk drive for WinDroid to be able to root my phone.
So, how can I get this fixed? Is it an issue with the ROM? Is there some way that I can turn on a disk drive mode on the rom.
Any help is appreciated!

Check the device manager in Windows. Does it state a 'unknown device' (or similar)

Looking at device manager, it shows my phone in two different places. It shows once in 'other devices' as just android phone and then under 'portable devices' as the name of the phone.
When I go into detail under 'other devices', device manager show that drivers are not installed but says everything is installed correctly under 'portable devices'.
I have the latest version of Sync Manager, so by that reasoning I should have the latest version of the HTC drivers. What else would I need to get my phone to not show as offline?

Uninstall Sync Manager. It doesn't play nice with ADB. The only thing it is good for if you are rooted is installing the drivers. After that, get rid of it.

Still having issues
Hello all,
I am still having issues with getting my computer to recognize that USB debugging is on and getting it connected to my computer with adb. I have uninstalled sync manager, and yet my phone is still not recognized.
Under debugging in developer options, the only thing I have checked is USB debugging.
Is there something else that needs to be checked in the developer options? Why do I still have this issue?
P.S. I would post pictures, but I can't unfortunately :\

Thanks for the reply bford152. Oddly, I do not have this option available to me.
I would like to post pictures of the options I have under USB debug. But even posting a link and not having it parse still tries to read it and says I cannot post outside links. Next question, how do I attach photos without adding it as a link to the post. Maybe I'm blind, because I cannot see an option to do this.

What's your adb version ?
It needs 1.0.31 for Android 5.1 and 1.0.32 for Android 6.0 (minimum requirement)
Have you tried with a secured kernel/boot.img ? If you don't have "Revoke USB debugging authorizations" in Developer options - means that you have insecure kernel installed.

I have adb version 1.0.32, so all good there.
I don't seem to have "Revoke USB debugging authorizations". So, I have Elite kernel right now and I guess that's the issue. I will get a different kernel and see if that helps.

I got everything to work now. Switched to Cyanogenmod 12.1 and it gives me all the options I need. Thanks for all your help.
