I have a T-Mobile HTC M8 that I fully converted to Stock 4.4.2.
Yesterday I sideloaded stock 4.4.3. Everything was fine until I noticed something today -- front camera is no longer functional.
I've attached 2 pictures:
1. In resolution & quality -- front camera isn't even selectable. When I toggle between front and back, it just inverts the back camera. Yes, I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling stock app AND clear cache.
2. My build number to show that I'm up to date.
I'll try to do a factory reset -- but I hope someone here can verify if it's isolated to me only, or it's a bug with the HTC One M8 gpe update to 4.4.3
Thanks,
Michael

Weird. Yesterday, my REAR camera stopped working without any apparent impetus from me. In the stock camera app, I can't even select the rear camera and if I use a different camera app (LapseItPro), I can select the rear camera but the image is completely inverted (both horizontal and vertical) and looks a bit squeezed.
I'm using Venom...doing a factory reset didn't help and neither did restoring from a month old backup. I'll be following your thread closely, but I'm afraid I'll have to restore to stock and haul it up to T-Mobile for a warranty replacement.

So only your front (selfie) camera works? You have the same symptoms as me except it's my front (selfie) camera that isn't selectable. I don't have anything custom installed. I believe the 4.4.2 conversation even unrooted me. I only have, s-off.
If no one else is having this issue, I'm guessing I'll have to factory reset. If that doesn't work - most likely firmware is jacked up and I'll have to restore to Stock and warranty exchange at T-Mobile

Yessir, that's about the long and short of it. I could almost overlook the selfie camera not working since I rarely use it, but the main camera not working is a killer.
I installed a different ROM (Revolution) and then killed everything and went back to stock, but it's still hosed. Here's hoping I can exchange it at a store.
Any luck with your factory reset?

Nope, factory reset didn't fix the problem. 4.4.3 sideload definitely hosed my front camera. I'm going to restore to stock T-mobile ROM and go exchange for another one at T-mobile.

My HTC camera is only showing the "selfie" camera
all other apps besides snapchat only show the front camera
On snapchat i can flip to the rear camera but it is all inverted.
So far i've rebooted, cleaned all apps running, force stopped all apps.
Cleaned camera and snapchat data/cache
Reset G-Sensor from HTC settings
Any ideas how to fix this, it literally only appeared today?
I've also rebooted into safe mode and tested the camera app and it makes no difference.
More info:
Only the top camera on the rear is working on snapchat
Bump! anyone know?
Did you ever end up fixing this?

Try RUU, if your M8 version has one. Note that RUU will wipe the phone, so backup beforehand, accordingly.
No in the end I RMA'd the device.

Nope, I just assumed my replacement camera was faulty. I put in the original and it was right side up so it's all good. Not sure how a RUU would fix it. I had wiped data but it didn't work. I assumed it was physical and not software issue.
I was replacing all 3 because one was busted and I couldn't figure out which one. Found out it was the front one during disassembly so I got lucky there.

You replacing the camera is really important information to have posted. Its clearly a hardware problem in your case (less obvious in the case of the OP whose thread you posted in).
I just thought of the RUU, as it would return all partitions to "factory" condition. Something to try, in order to eliminate the possibility of a software issue.
Wiping data doesn't affect any other partitions (such as system). It just wipes your user data. So it doesn't exclude the possibility of a software issue.
But again, its clearly a HW issue in your case. But its hard to help folks, when they fail to provide critical information.
All,
I noticed yesterday when attempting to use the front facing camera that I get only a black screen, the camera app switches back to rear camera for a moment, then the app closes.
I am not sure when this became an issue as I'm not a selfie kind of guy. The rear camera continues to function just fine.
I have tried the following fixes
wipe data in the camera app
wipe user data
uninstall / reinstall camera update
boot into safe mode
uninstall / reinstall app that utilize the camera
None of the "fixes" have resolved the problem.
Does anyone have a suggestion where to head next?
Phone is S-Off, unlocked, rooted, and running the latest stock ROM.
Should I just say f-it and try a different ROM?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
Update: I flashed LeeDroid ROM this morning and the front facing camera is still not working. Looks like it could be a hardware issue...

yah, that's what it looks like. hope you have warranty.
I have the same issue. Previously when I pressed the swirly-arrows button it tried to switch then locked up and wouldn't do anything until I restarted. Now when I press the button it just spins around and nothing happens. I used catlog reader to find some errors being logged. I posted a thread about it if you're interested.

I have started with the stock ROM, and used cm13, and even updated to the newest fully stock ROM 3.2.4 and to no avail.
The camera app either force closes or nothing shows up on screen. Every once in awhile the front camera will work, but I'll click the icon to switch to the rear camera and no effect, it just stays on fron t camera.
I've tried many third-party apps, I've tried cm camera fix, everything I can think. Clearing data and coach for the app the whole shabang.
Now I'm ordering a brand new camera module and I will see what happens. But any help and any information will be much appreciated thanks
Was it working when you bought it...what did you do to it before it broke?
it definitely seems like a hardware issue, had it been a software issue a custom rom or 3rd party camera might have resolved it and since you have tried many roms and reverted back to stock too so it doesnt look like a software issue.

Funny you should ask, because I honestly don't know when it actually started but I do remember wiping userdata so I could unencrypt my phone and thereafter was when I noticed it no longer worked. Don't know if those 2 things correlate because I flashed back to stock (which is encrypted) and still no luck
Did you solve the camera problem ???
Hello,
so for the past few weeks my camera hasn't been working and I finally decided to ask you guys for help.
It all started when I wanted to try RR but it kept asking for 21C modem so I quickly downloaded one and flashed it. So I checked what I needed and restored Fulmics from the nandroid backup I made, but the camera app stared to just crash and since then I pretty much don't have camera.
What I've tried till now:
Restoring to stock
Flashing Fulmics again
Replacing the camera
Still can't resolve this issue...
By restoring to stock, do you mean flashing a TOT or KDZ file?
If you have done that and still not working you have something broken in your hardware.
Is the front camera working?
I guess you have already tried a different camera app.

Sorry for the late reply. I used the kdz file. The front camera is working. The thing is that yesterday the camera worked for a few minutes just fine. It's strange.

Ummm... sounds strange... maybe your camera is partly broken, did you drop your phone or something before this problem? If so, the camera could have a bad connection to the motherboard or is about to die.

I know right? I've never dropped it. I replaced the camera so I wonder if it can somehow be a software problem...
Just wanted to bump this as I STILL have this problem...
Same issue here, was running fulmics for several months with no issue, then suddenly and out of nowhere my camera app started to fail. At first the front camera looked stretched and weird and some app buttons dissapeared such as flash, but I could still choose front or rear camera and both worked fine. Then it got worse and the button to switch cameras dissapeared completely. I tried re flashing fulmics, tried xenon rom, tried back to stock... nothing so far. I tried booting in safe mode and the camera app gives me the option to choose rear camera but when I press it the app crashes.
I hope someone can find a fix for this!

No software update inbetween? Sounds like a hardware issue, try cleaning your connections and reattaching the Camera tightly.
The camera module is extremely close to the problematic overheating chip in the G3, so it's not impossible something got messed up.
I have Exactly the same problem.. Pleaaase someone give us a solution.. Fulmics ruined our phones
I have that same problem. Resolved?
There were fulmics rum. I decided to replace it with RR rom. The rear camera did not work, the flash did not work.
I installed a different kernel but it was not resolved.
Help plsss
Had to do a Zoom meeting and figured I would just use my tablet but found that neither camera was working. I rebooted, cleared cache, then finally did a factory reset to no avail.
The stock camera app doesn't give me anything on either camera.
I tried installing a 3rd party camera app and found that the front facing camera works, but I can't get the rear camera to do anything- it just stays black. Also, if I start with the front facing camera that is working, when I switch it to the rear camera, the app hangs with what was showing on the front facing camera.
Is there a chance that this is a software problem? Has anybody else had any issues like this? It is totally up to date, stock software. No root, no drops, cracks, nothing. Tablet could sell as brand new so I don't think it could be an issue from any sort of bending or impact.
Any help would be appreciated. I have searched all the normal forums and sites for camera issues but have found nothing. I also created a case with Samsung last week with absolutely no response.
Strange! Since you have never modified your device, first thing that comes to mind would be to clear data of camera app but since u already did a factory reset, try flashing stock firmware again. Could very well be a hardware problem, had a similar problem with my iphone. Take it to the samsung service centre if flashing doesn't work. Btw, has your camera worked well in the past? Gcb

Thank you. Yes, the camera worked perfectly fine before, just hardly ever used it.
