[Q] SwiftKey keyboard : can I get phone layout on tablet? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I have had a nexus 4 and 7; now I have a 5 and 7 2013. All run 4.4.2.
5 and 7 2013 are rooted.
SwiftKey beta 4.5.0.68 (I also have the paid version)
When I bought SwiftKey I was able to install the phone version on all my devices. Some time ago they merged the apps into one, but the keyboard layout is different between my phone and my tablet. I far prefer the one on the phone which has all the arrow keys, not just the left and right on the tablet. To me it is illogical when the tablet has a bigger screen to out less on it. Also I find it frustrating having slightly different keys and hence touch typing is that but more difficult.
Is it possible to fool the app into thinking it is installed on a phone? I only want this one app fooled, not every app.
Just in case someone suggests installing the old phone app, no thanks, SwiftKey has moved on significantly since then.
I have Xposed installed, but the App Settings module does not work for keyboards.

Google Reader?

I take it Google Reader isn't optimized for the 7" tablet size yet?
I have been using it for over a month and it works great.
Same here. I don't use it much, but when I do it works fine for me. What is it doing/not doing?
ummmmm............ could you repeat that?
Well, the tablet version has the topics on the left and articles in the middle when in landscape. mine looks just like the phone version.

Yes. You are correct it is not optimized for the 7" tablets yet. However, if you change the density of the screen to that of a 10" tablet, it works as expected (not like the phone version, but like the tablet version should). I switched to gReader Pro because i dont want to change the density of my screen permanently just for google Reader.
Recently Google has optimized it, on mu A100 is perfect but I prefere ChannelsPro for my feed

SwiftKey vs. ICS Keyboard

So, I'm an avid fan of SwiftKey. I think it even trumps Swype (although a combination of the two that allowed swipes and key taps would be roxorz!). But my question is:
Do you think ICS keyboard (with supposed blindtype infrastructure) is better than SwiftKey?
i used the stock keys for 3 days. .
i switch back to swiftkey x.
i dont like the stock keys. they respond to slow if you type fast.
I loved swiftkey on my Inspire 4g, but I think the ics keyboard is better. I can type faster and the auto correct is more accurate.

i got Swiftkey during the 10 days of 10p apps - i think its an improvement on the stock keyboard..
I like swiftkey but cannot stand the auto space after punctuation. I cannot count the number of times it has messed me up when entering form data.

love swift key. only thing I really like about stock is the dedicated..com key

i installed swiftkey X right away. the only problem is that no prediction on 90% of the web site I go to.
I love SwiftKey. Has anyone else had problems getting it to learn from Facebook/Gmail/Twitter on ICS?
Edit: N/M, it finally went through

Yeah, they say some nonsense about not wanting to interfere with predictions inherent on other sites, but 1. Other site predictions suck, and 2. They often aren't even there!
Let me have SwiftKey predictions always that are based on my history and I'll be just fine...
SwiftKey for sure.
I've been using swiftkey since I got my nexus and I like it a lot. I used swype on my previous phone and I can't decide if I want to go back to swype or not now.
Stock Keyboard. The ICS keyboard has much better prediction. Plus, the stock Switftkey themes just don't cut it for me.
Yeah I've been using stock since I got the phone. I heard so many brags about it, but I think it's time to reload Swiftkey X. Been using that since it came out of beta, I bought it the first day. My only beef are the skins as well.
Used only swift key on my droid Eris, and I haven't even loaded it onto my nexus .the thing I miss the most is the swipe to delete a word ...I do that frequently lol

I used swift key on my transformer for the split keyboard... and it worked awesome EXCEPT I hated the fact that once it auto corrects, its done.
With stock android and thumb keyboard, if auto correct changes a word, you can hit backspace and it'll return to its unaltered form. This is great when I use an abbreviation and it tries to guess my word and screw me up, I just hit back and boom.
Swift key wouldn't do that. I also love the prediction of the ICS keyboard. I love how it underlines misspelled words in red (which may just be ICS).
I only own the tablet version, which makes me mad. 2 different versions which means I have to buy it twice? Lame. Thumb Keyboard replaced it. It feels like stock but had tablet split keyboard options... and themes.

-Asus Transformer
Stock, I managed to type faster when I use the stock key. better correction, better prediction, better UI...
Stock is great in all regards for me. Accuracy, speed, prediction, corrections. Not to mention voice typing and aesthetics.
Stock with autocorrection turned up to very aggressive is awesome.
The voice diction on stock is awesome (how did this not get more publicity with 4.0???) but I miss having quick access to long press symbols and the gestures, mostly swipe to delete word. I also like that I can just restore the app in between ROM flashes and have my dictionary remain intact.
Stock here. I bought SwiftKey when it was 10c just so that if I ever changed my mind it was there, but I haven't even installed it on my Nexus yet!

Note 4 keyboard

Alright guys, anyone here use a different keyboard? I loved the keyboard I had with all the custom roms, it was a lot more user friendly with my fat fingers, is there a way to get that on the Note 4? I end up putting a period where I want to hit the space constantly. Any help or recommendations would be great!!
Omg I would never go back to the Samsung keyboard. I've been using SwiftKey which is now free, for years! I'd never change. Plus it has tons of themes etc
surprisingly i've been pretty happy with the stock keyboard this time around. maybe its because it's pretty quick and lag free, maybe because of the auto handwriting mode when i pull the pen out, maybe because of the number row, but it's pretty solid.
as for using another keyboard from a ROM, i would think most keyboards would work if you just get the apk and install.
my go to keyboard generally is the google keyboard, then swiftkey, then fleksy. all should be on the play store.
I'll have go look through some old roms and find out what was in them, this stock keyboard is getting old, I dislike the numbers at the top, the size of the spacebar, and I don't use the handwriting.
Been using SwiftKey for years on all my phones and tablet. I've tried many keyboards in that time but always return.
If you fancy something different, try minuum. It's a one line keyboard that takes a bit to get used to.

try swype. i think that's what your looking for. its theme-able.
It wasn't Swype. I went and got the google keyboard. Im pretty satisfied with this. It really is a releif being able to type without constantly hitting the wrong buttons
I'm another one using SwiftKey!
I've got to chime in and say I love SwiftKey too!
I started using SwiftKey bc of this thread and holy crap!!! It's amazing!

i switch between google keyboard and stock keyboard.. swiftkey for some reason just isn't that great. It feels slow and i make far more mistakes with swiftkey than with stock keyboard.

Does Sketchbook Pro run Smith enough on this tablet?

Hello I just ordered one of these off eBay for $80 in excellent condition but I feel like I should've asked if sketchbook runs smooth enough on here? I know it's old hardware, but still better than Snapdragon 410 in Galaxy A tab. I wanted a small tablet with s pen (Wacom). I don't need it for anything else I have an iPhone 6s and i7 desktop and Skylake i3 laptop
what version JB 4.1.2 or 4.2.2? Hopefully you didn't get 4.4.2.
As of this month I finally got the best ever overall operation in 4.4.2. But it is not anywhere as perfect as 4.1.2 or 4.2.2
If by chance you have KK, you can either root and use a custom kernel or do the S Note fix to correct the spen pixel issue
It is easy to do, but any complain about it being trial and error. Once you get the knack, you'll wonder why you had such a problem in the first place.
I have the app in question along with Layer Paint HD, and Paper Artist. once you align your spen in KK, you won't have any issues with drawing apps.
There are custom ROMs that correct the spen issue but some still need work as they are not 100% fully functional as stock is.
Since I require perfect miracast functions, with minimal bugs with a nice layout. I was forced into manually selecting components from S5, Tab 4 and Note 2 stock ROMs, along with some ported system apps distributed by Devs. Some very few apps are from dead ROMs, where the Dev let rot away.
Yes you can run S5 apps in stock form, just need to root and run Xposed with app settings. Some apps require 320 or so DPI, and others may require 190 or 220. It is a trial and error, but they are stock, and with a build.prop mod, you can update them on Play or Galaxy.
I run the latest versions of Tab 4 version and S5 version of Peel Smart Remotes. As S5 has a better layout.
Some apps like Kids mode need a small tweak with a saved older sub app to run, though the lock screen widget interactions and gator animations are missing.
I run my N5110 as a T330 (Tab 4 8.0) in my build prop, 90% of the time, with out any issues with my apps. The remainder of my usage is in S5 form, as my Chrome Dev browser with Samsung's chrome customization system app, operates a wee better browsing on the Internet. Seems that the updated versions are not so device dependant in the build.prop requirements.
Hello thanks! Sounds good I don't have the device yet. I'm sure I'll be back with more questions. Hopefully it's not 4.4.2 like you said.
Okay sadly it has 4.4.2 Can yuu point me in the direction of the spen fix?
By the way I have SAMSUNG-SGH-I467 sounds like it's hard to root this device?
autocorrect sucks on your thread title...
Smith or smooth? XD

Google Keyboard (GBoard), no one handed mode

Hi all,
I´ve a small but interesting Question. For a couple of Weeks I tried installing the Google Keyboard (GBoard) on my Tablet. I was hoping to be able to use the one handed mode (hold Tablet firmly with one, and type freely with the other). But after I installed, reinstalled, googled and everything. I can´t find a way to enable it. It should be as easy as longpressing the "," and from there access the settings and the one handed mode. Well, it doesn´t work. By the way my device isn´t rooted.
Any suggestions, may be some of you with a rooted device can give it a try? Or maybe some with the Lineage OS?
Thanks a lot,
Not on LOS either... Using SwiftKey for now...
I don't think that this feature is supported for some reason on tablets, which is very disappointing and frustrating. Even if they didn't think it would be used a lot, since the feature already exists, shouldn't Google have just left the feature in and let the users decide if it was useful?
I would seriously use this feature everyday, especially in landscape mode!
Just installed LOS 7.1.2 on a phone and on a tablet. On the phone´s Gboard I can activate One-Handed-Mode, on the tablet I can´t. So same OS version, same Gboard version, still no option to select. Switching back to Swiftkey.
does anyone have a solution yet?
xposed/magisk module maybe?
+1 to landscape one handed !!!
Not supported for tablets, i presume.
Traditionally Android contains a tablet, phablet and phone mode, but this might have changed in recent years.
Altering the DPI value and other scaling options should force the system into another mode. Along with other changes, like dual column view gone in apps, bars and buttons too big...
